Led by future Eagle Joe Walsh, the James Gang establishes a power-trio template for all times on its 1970 sophomore album. Home to the top-down favorite Funk #49, Rides Again sparks with a stylistic versatility, hard-rocking edge, and balladic vulnerability united by tight-knit musicianship. The quartet's penchant for crunch-laden boogies and focused jamming pours out on the first half of the record before the band pulls its trick bag out on the second half and injects keyboards into the stylistically varied mix. From start to finish, Rides Again is a 70s rock classic - and, now, one that at last features first-rate sonics to match the music.
Recorded at the then-brand-new Record Plant, the songs sound more authoritative and fun than ever before on Mobile Fidelity's restored analog pressing. Mastered from the original analog tapes, pressed at RTI, and strictly limited to 4000 numbered copies, this 180g LP teems with involving textures, details, and depth hidden from view on prior pressings. The dimensional body and weight of the guitars, probing low-end of Dale Peters' bass lines, reedy timbre of Walsh's singing, and pacing of the crisp percussive cues are all enhanced. Increased separation between the instruments and airier, more open soundstaging add to the record's toe-tapping fun and seemingly unlimited groove quotient.
Walsh, without question, remains the biggest draw on Rides Again. The FM radio staple Funk #49 - kick-started by the irresistible declaration I sleep all day, out all night/I know where you're goin' - continues to be identified by many as a Walsh solo tune. Yet it, as well as the sexual thrust of the head-bobbing Woman and proto-metal slash of the multi-part The Bomber, fully represents the pure chemistry and locomotive momentum of the James Gang. With Walsh's Echoplex-equipped slide guitar making psychedelic- and blues-leaning comments, his mates pick up on the direction and answer with melodic responses.
Throughout the record, the trio's synergy clicks at every turn. Such interplay extends to the more diverse, country-tinged fare on Side B. Streaked with throaty organ passages and reflective moods, sincere midtempo ballads like Tend My Garden tease with rave-up structures and express a softer side of the group. Similarly, the acoustic-based Garden Gate and Jack Nitzsche-orchestrated Ashes the Rain and I showcase sincerity and diversity suggesting the James Gang prepared to defy limitations afforded most of its peers.
Yet Walsh's departure in 1971 changed the group's fortunes - and, by extension, upped the value of Rides Again, which survives as a near-flawless example of earnest 70s rock and organic playing.1. Funk #49

FarmThe worry about the reunion of the original Dinosaur Jr. line-up, more than 20 years after their formation and legendary dissolution, was that these guys were just flogging the back catalog as a marketing gimmick. With the release of Beyond, in 2007, the band gave a hearty Marshall driven answer to those inquiring ears. This album is the Rosetta Stone of funk's dominant idioms, yet its existence has barely been a rumor. In 1970 James Brown perfectly captured a definitive moment in modern music when he ordered Bootsy Collins into the studio to record the tracks that would be test pressed on King Records as These Are The J.B.'s. This album is the epitome of funk music, Brown's innovation that influenced everything that came after it, from Afro-beat to disco to hip-hop. And if there is any funk ensemble as influential as Brown's, in the post-"Cold Sweat" musical landscape, it's the Parliament/Funkadelic contingent. Those two streams, as Grammy Winning James Brown historian Alan Leeds details in this album's liner notes, converged for the first time here.
This link between Brown's funk and all that followed features Bootsy and his young band running through twelve-minute instrumental take of Marva Whitney's "It's My Thing," replete with blues chord changes, alongside interpretations of the Meters, Kool and the Gang and none other than Jimi Hendrix. This is a young band's James Brown-turned-on-his-head style of funk that they nail in a one-minute vamp that pre-dates their obscure but important work as the Houseguests ensemble and embodies the essence of the psychedelic-flavored music that would propel them into the orbit of
George Clinton and his mothership, where they poked cosmic holes in funk's polyrhythmic ozone layer in the mid-1970s.
There are only two extant copies of the original King Records test press LP of These Are The J.B.'s. This, the first commercial issue of this album, was overseen by Now-Again's Egon alongside Leeds and Universal Music Group's James Brown expert Harry Weinger. It was mastered specifically for vinyl by Elysian Master's Dave Cooley from the original two-track stereo master that James Brown and his engineer Ron Lenhoff delivered to production forty-four years ago. Shortly thereafter, founding member Pete Fardon, fired just two days before his partner's death, also succumbed to an overdose, leaving the band's state in tatters. Would there still be a Pretenders?
Hynde answers this question with a resounding yes on Learning to Crawl, which still contains signs of the band's early, street-wise rawness but also adds new wrinkles, with more streamlined melodies, sensitive ballads, and reflective tones. Back on the Chain Gang, the Pretenders' most commercially successful hit, functioned as a bittersweet tribute to her ex-mates while the Christmas-themed 2000 Miles holds rank as one of the most effecting, penetrating love songs of Hynde's career. Throughout the record, the Pretenders are again one.

Where I've Been"I think this is the best work we've ever done," explains JD & The Straight Shot founder and frontman Jim Dolan of the band's latest release, Where I've Been. "I'm so proud of the music that my band and I have put together. I believe in this album."
Produced by Joe Walsh, Where I've Been features several breakthrough singles including "Governor's Song," which challenges some of today's most well-known political figures; "Under That Hood," a transformative single that tells the tragic story of Trayvon Martin; and "Hard to Find," which will be featured in the highly-anticipated film, St. Vincent, starring Bill Murray and Melissa McCarthy.
Dolan's day gig is Cablevision Systems CEO and Executive Chairman of Madison Square Garden, where he also oversees New York sports teams such as the Knicks and the Rangers. Music is his passion.
"I needed something in my life where I felt like I was actually creating," says Dolan. "Most of what I do as an executive is orchestrate. I don't actually set up cable and I don't really shoot hoops," he says, laughing. "Music is something I've played since I was a kid. It's me purely expressing myself."
JD & The Straight Shot's creative nucleus is Dolan and guitarist Marc Copely (B.B. King), who pen all the band's music and lyrics. Instrumentally indispensable is guitarist Aidan Dolan; keyboardist Brian Mitchell (Bob Dylan, Levon Helm); and drummer Joe Magistro (The Black Crowes). Also part of the band are some of pop music's finest session players, bassist Zev Katz (Aretha Franklin, Elton John), and violinist Erin Slaver (Rod Stewart, Trace Adkins, Martina McBride).
Dolan started JD & The Straight Shot in 2000. The band has recorded four previous albums: Midnight Run (2012), Can't Make Tears (2011), Right On Time (2008), and Nothing To Hide (2005) - as well as an EP, Daily News Blues (2010).
The band's style is steeped in the quiet fire of Americana, with distinctive elements of the blues and mystical, rustic, New Orleans-flavored roots music - topped off with a dash of the classic rock of Dolan's youth.
"I grew up on bands like the Allman Brothers," says Dolan. "We played those records until the grooves wore right off of them."
JD & The Straight Shot has been covered by The New York Times, Billboard, and New York Magazine, among other publications, and performed on "Good Day New York." Their song "Can't Make Tears" is the theme song for AMC's TV show Hell on Wheels, and their music has been featured in many films, including the critically acclaimed August: Osage County.
The group has opened for the Eagles on several tours, including the current "History of the Eagles" tour, the "Summer 2010" tour, and the band's stadium tour with the Dixie Chicks and Keith Urban. Don't Get HeavyWhen asking experimental electronic yacht duo Fur Trade to pinpoint where their sound comes from, it becomes pretty clear that the list is never ending.
"We had the goal of making electronic music, but not with typical electronic sounds. There's synths, drums, bass and guitar, but also piano and saxophone and even a full string section," explains songwriter and producer Steve Bays, previously the frontman of synth punk band Hot Hot Heat. "We both have a background in heavy music, so we wanted to find a way to do yacht music with a heavy impact."
The Vancouver-based duo, which consists of Bays on synths and drums and 24-year-old songwriter and session musician Parker Bossley (Gay Nineties) on bass and guitar, combines both members on vocals, often singing together, to create a unique voice entirely their own. But the intricate sounds you hear on their album definitely don't come overnight.
"We usually write songs quickly. 'Kids These Days' (the first single released by Fur Trade) was done in one night. We can write a song in one session, but then we'll go back to the studio and take it down the 'rabbit hole'," explains Bays. The self-defined "rabbit hole" method, involves the two locking themselves in Bays' studio, Tugboat Place, for days, sometimes weeks at a time to get the 'sculpting' just right. "With electronic music, the mixing is just as important as the song writing. You can't take that for granted."
Bays and Bossley admit to being obsessed with the minute details of production that most people wouldn't notice. And it creates a delicate balance that is very apparent when listening to their songs. Big and hi fi, while still sounding dirty; continually distorted, but with a soft vibe. It's the two sides to Fur Trade's music that makes it so unexpected.
Bossley cites the loose and experimental psychedelic arrangements of 70's composer Piero Piccioni, as well as the thick funk lines of Rick James as his main influences on the album.
"The synthesized beats in Falco's Einzelhaft were also a huge part of it for me. I come from a background of studying composition of 70's composers and Steve and I both share a love for the soft pop from the 70's and 80's (Bowie, Sade, Hall and Oates)," explains Bossley, "but we add our own touch of modern grime and dirt in there."
The two share a sporadic and high energy creative connection that allows them to combine, shape and reform their influences, styles and musical ideas into a unified one. In the beginning, Bossley often went sleepless for days to work with Bays at night and work as a chef by day. Watching them holed up in the studio together gives the most insight into the unique energy that comes when they work together.
"We're definitely going a mile a minute. It can come pretty fast. We're continuously bouncing ideas, and suddenly, everything will merge. That's the best feeling," says Bossley.
For 'Voyager', one of many standout tracks on their upcoming album, Don't Get Heavy, on Last Gang Records, it all started with a beat.
"I was sitting at a friend's drum kit and started playing a beat. I liked it a lot, and wanted to remember it, so I recorded it on my iPhone. I put it on my computer and surprisingly enough, that recording is what you hear on the final product," says Bays.
Not to say that the rest of the track came quickly. Also added the the mix were drum samples, live and programmed, and eight passes of guitar, which Bays chopped up multiple times to get the notes and feel just right.
"We've written a lot of songs, we have a lot more than what's just on the album. But we'll try anything. Some of our best work has come out of the sessions where we just try any instrument until we get the right sound."
The title track of the album, 'Don't Get Heavy', came up after speaking with a friend who tends to always make things bigger than they are.
"I like to come up with album titles, and make them song titles. In this case, I wasn't planning on working on a song, but I was thinking of this friend. I just wanted to tell him, 'let's hang out, but don't get heavy'. I was so excited about the title, the lyrics pretty much wrote themselves."

The First Born Is DeadThe blues had long been a potent undercurrent in the Birthday Party's music, so it wasn't all that surprising that Nick Cave embraced the sound and feeling of rural blues on his second album with the Bad Seeds, The Firstborn Is Dead. What was startling was how well Cave and his bandmates -- Barry Adamson, Mick Harvey, and Blixa Bargeld -- were able to absorb and honor the influences of artists like Skip James and Charley Patton while creating a sound that was unmistakably their own. The moody obsessions of rural blues -- trains, floods, imprisonment, sin, fear, and death -- seemed made to order for Cave, and he was able to tap into the doomy iconography of this music with potent emotional force; on Tupelo, he makes a sweeping and disturbing epic of the rain-swept night when Elvis Presley was born, and Knocking on Joe is a tale of life on the work gang that communicates the pain of the spirit as clearly as the ache of the body. Also, the blues helped transform Cave's music as well as his lyrics; the brutal sonic pummel of the Birthday Party here gave way to a more subtle and dynamic approach that still made effective use of dissonance and bare-wired electric guitar noise while proving the balance of loud and soft only made each side deeper and more resonant. (The stark, barely there guitar and drums of Blind Lemon Jefferson are as startling and malignantly fascinating as anything in the Birthday Party's catalog.) The Firstborn Is Dead proved Nick Cave's musical palate was significantly broader than his debut album suggested and pointed to a path (channeling the sounds and emotions of American roots music) he would return to on many of his albums that followed.
