U-Men (Pre-Order)This 3xLP Box Set Collects The Entire Studio-Recorded Output Of The U-Men
Plus 5 Unreleased Songs
With 16 Pages Of Photos, Liner Notes & Interviews With The Band
Executive Produced By Jack Endino
The U-Men are one of the best bands I've ever seen. They were
hypnotic, frenetic, powerful and compelling. It was impossible to
resist getting sucked into their weird, darkly absurd world. They
effortlessly blended The Sonics, Link Wray, Pere Ubu, and
Captain Beefheart. Their shows were loose-limbed, drunken
dance parties and no two shows were alike. The U-Men were
avant-garage explorers and, most importantly, they fucking
rocked. I was lucky enough to live in their hometown and I saw
them every chance I could.
From 1983 to 1987, the U-Men were the undisputed kings of
the Seattle Underground. No one else came close. They ruled a
bleak backwater landscape populated by maybe 200 people.
They were the only band that could unify the disparate
sub-subcultures and get all 200 of those people to fill a room.
Anglophilic, dress-dark Goths; neo-psych MDA acolytes; skate
punks who shit in bathtubs at parties; Mod vigilantes who
tormented the homeless with pellet guns; college kids who
thought college kids were lame; Industrial Artistes; some random
guy with a moustache; and eccentrics who insisted that they
couldn't be pigeonholed: all coalesced around the U-Men.
Sub Pop co-founder, Bruce Pavitt released the first record by the
U-Men, a 4-song 12" EP on Bombshelter Records. By the time
they had recorded songs for another record, Bruce was too broke
to release it on his proto-Sub Pop label, so he hooked them up
with Gerard Cosloy at Homestead Records. This was a big deal.
Homestead had a heavy rep at the time with recent releases by
Foetus, Nick Cave, Sonic Youth, and Big Black. I was sure that
the release of their second 12", Stop Spinning, would propel the
U-Men into the ranks of those Homestead acts and the
worldwide underground would get hip to Seattle's finest.
Following the departure of bassist Jim Tillman (replaced by Tom
Hazelmyer of Amphetamine Reptile Records, and then Tony
Ransome), the band recorded two fantastic singles, and recorded
their one full-length album, Step on a Bug, for Black Label,
which was run out of Fallout Records. They became increasingly
disenchanted with the direction the Seattle underground was
heading and called it quits in 1989.
The U-Men had nothing to do with Grunge. They were their own
unique thing. I loved them and I still miss them. I remember
thinking at the time that most of their recordings were a little
soft and didn't capture the power of the band live. Now, thirty
years later, their records sound great to me and we are lucky that
they exist. I'm stoked that Sub Pop complied these long
out-of-print records and scrounged up some unreleased songs so
that everyone has a chance to take a trip back to old weird

Innocence ReachesOf Montreal have announced their new album, Innocence Reaches. The group's 14th album follows the release of last year's studio effort, Aureate Gloom, and their live album, Snare Lustrous Doomings.
Frontman Kevin Barnes said the style of the group's new 12-song set developed from him listening to current music versus tapping into the past. Forever I've been detached from current music, he said in a statement. I got into this bubble of only being in some other time period. I came up picking apart the Beach Boys, the Beatles and symphonic pieces. But last year, I was hearing Jack Ü, Chairlift, Arca and others, thinking about low end and sound collage. It was an extra layer to geek out to.
On the new single, It's Different for Girls, which Zane Lowe premiered on his Beats 1 Radio program, the whimsical, quirky vibe is juxtaposed against the song's more serious socio-political themes about questionable gender norms. Barnes' lyrics include lines like when they are children, they're de-personalized, aggressively objectified and it's different for girls, they are mercurial creatures, not a masculine dissonance or sexual currency, which he sings over bouncy synths.
The cover art was conceived by Barnes' brother David, who is a new first-time father and expresses his wonderment for the female anatomy and was also inspired by trans issues, which Barnes said in a statement has always been a part of my identity as a human and is evidenced by his gender-bending in performances.

ControversyPrince's Smash 1981 LP Back on Vinyl for First Time in Ages: Provacateur Turns More Sultry and Political, Increases Synthesizers and Sonic Range
Mastered from the Original Tapes: Lacquers Cut by Bernie Grundman at Bernie Grundman Mastering
Pressed at RTI and Features Complete Reproduction of Original Packaging: Comes With Collectable Poster
Continuing on with the pioneering directions he began pursuing on Dirty Mind, Prince again comes up roses on 1981's Controversy, an enterprising record on which he turns more political and furher assimilates keyboards and synthesizers into arrangements. Dirty Mind is also home to the piano ballad and chart smash Do Me, Baby, a sensitive song that's considered by many as his finest vocal effort. Given that we're talking Prince, that's saying something.
As had already become customary, Prince again handles all production, arrangements and composition duties, using Controversy, Annie Christian, and the unsparingly direct Ronnie, Talk to Russia as potent sociopolitical statements during an era which responsibility had lapsed and conservatism set in. Willing to stir it up, Prince injects contagious grooves, melodies, and refrains into arrangements that mix new wave, rock, funk, and pop, all serving to heighten the immediacy of the lyrics. And he knows how to have fun. Saucy, stylized, and sexy, Jack U Off and Let's Work are tailor-made for getting the opposite sex between the sheets.
After more than two decades of being out of print, Controversy is finally back on vinyl--and how. Mastered from the original tapes, with lacquers cut by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering, and pressed at RTI on 180g vinyl, this is the very best version you'll ever hope to hear. No longer will you have to settle for the slightly compressed original or nearly unlistenable CD versions. Rhino's analog reissue also boasts replicate original packaging and comes with the poster that accompanied the first-generation pressings.

Do The Right ThingThe soundtrack for director Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing is a window into the classics hip-hop/R&B scene circa 1989. Peppered with new jack era slabs of wax from the likes of Public Enemy (the iconic Fight the Power), summer party staples from E.U. (Party Hearty) and Teddy Riley (My Fantasy), and deep slow jams from Perri and Al Jarreau, it's the perfect background for a hot night in the city, and like the film itself, it's both frivolous and foreboding.1. URPD-WAR-8245xThe White Stripes
Under Great White Northern LightsIn the summer of 2007, shortly after the release of their 6th album Icky Thump, The White Stripes headed north of their hometown of Detroit to embark on an ambitious journey across Canada. The plan was to play a show in every province and territory in Canada, from B.C. to Newfoundland to Nunavut. Having never done a tour of Canada, Meg and I thought it was high time to go whole hog, from the ocean to the permafrost explains Jack White. We wanted to play out of the way towns that don't usually get shows, the shows are better, it's better for the people, it's a better experience, it's way more unique, something interesting is going to happen, hopefully.
White called upon filmmaker Emmett Malloy to come and document this trek for the band. Malloy had directed videos for the band in the past, and seemed eager to hit the road with them. Equipped with a couple of 16mm cameras, and a few other documenting devices, the band and crew all headed north. The end result was Under Great White Northern Lights.
Under Great White Northern Lights is a visual and emotional feature length film documenting The White Stripes making their way through Canada and culminating with their 10th Anniversary show in Nova Scotia. The film documents the band playing shows all over Canada; from local bowling alleys, to city buses, and onward to the legendary Savoy Theater for the 10th Anniversary show. A show that turned out to be the longest show the band had ever done on stage together.
The film captures intimate moments of Jack and Meg both on and off stage as they travel through some of the most remote parts of the northern Yukon Territory. Along the way, they have some nice casual conversations about their ten years together, fire cannons, play some of their biggest songs together on stage, and even play a one note show. The cameras were there to capture every waking moment.
What Northern Lights does best is document one of the biggest bands in the world, playing to local crowds in small towns. Some of these towns were so small that many of the locals had no idea who The White Stripes were, they just knew something big was going on in their town. This forced a band that had been together for a decade to go back to a place reminiscent of the first shows they ever played together. For the first time in a long time, no one knew who they were and they had to make a first impression with their music.
The live footage captured in this film shows that Jack and Meg were clearly ready for this. Beyond the live footage, some of the films most memorable moments happen off-stage, offering an insightful look into the very private and complex world that is The White Stripes. It was shortly after this tour that The White Stripes cancelled their fall tour of the U.S., making the ten year anniversary a truly pivotal milestone for this legendary band.

Medicine CountryShe may be considered the U.K. garage-rock queen (SPIN), but Holly Golightly has always embraced the sounds of the American south. She followed that muse to the dry, rural county of Madison, Georgia, where she now lives on a farm raising horses, chickens, and the curiosity of her neighbors. Golightly and The Brokeoffs (a.k.a. one-man band and frequent Golightly collaborator Lawyer Dave) recorded their new album Medicine County in an abandoned, recently foreclosed upon church nearby.
Medicine County features twelve new recordings, including eight originals by Golightly and The Brokeoffs, alongside traditional numbers like Blood on the Saddle and Jack ODiamonds. While theres a spectral quality to those traditional songs and others on the album, Golightly offers some levity, and a sharp lyrical wit, on tunes like Eyes in the Back of My Head and the albums title track, a postcard from their new home. Its a testament to the caliber of Golighty and The Brokeoffs writing that the trad numbers consort seamlessly with their originals.
The Washington Post has noted that Holly Golightly can make you believe in past lives and shes lived a few of her own. While Amy Winehouse and Duffy were in grade school, Golightly was fronting girl-group revival harbingers Thee Headcoatees. More recently she has collaborated with groups like The White Stripes and Mudhoney, and in 2005, two of her recordings were featured prominently in the acclaimed Jim Jarmusch film Broken Flowers. Since 2007, she has performed with The Brokeoffs, a partnership Pitchfork calls heartily ramshackle, and American Songwriter magazine has hailed as genuine, inspired and soulful.1. Forget It

Through The Past, Darkly (Big Hits Vol 2) (Awaiting Repress)
180 Gram Clear Vinyl
This album was spawned by three coinciding events -- the need to acknowledge the death of band co-founder Brian Jones (whose epitaph graces the inside cover) in July of 1969; the need to get Honky Tonk Women, then a huge hit single, onto an LP; and to fill the ten-month gap since the release of Beggars Banquet and get an album with built-in appeal into stores ahead of the Stones' first American tour in three years. The fact that the Stones had amassed a sufficient number of hits since their last greatest-hits compilation in early 1966 (Big Hits: High Tide and Green Grass) made this a no-brainer, and its song lineup was as potent at the time as any compilation of hit singles by any artist. From the group's excursions into fey psychedelia (Paint It, Black, Ruby Tuesday, She's a Rainbow, Dandelion), space rock (2000 Light Years From Home), punk decadence (Mother's Little Helper), and back to straight-ahead rock & roll (Jumpin' Jack Flash), some of it with a topical edge (Street Fighting Man), it's all incredibly potent, though also redundant to the extent that Ruby Tuesday and Let's Spend the Night Together had previously appeared on two U.S. albums. The presence of Honky Tonk Women propelled it to gold record status upon release on both sides of the Atlantic, although the simultaneously released British version (long out of print, except as a bootleg CD) is different and more confusing, but also more diverse and rewarding musically than the American version. Both this album and Big Hits: High Tide and Green Grass have been supplanted by Hot Rocks and More Hot Rocks, but are still handy in their tight respective focuses.

Davila 666 - Live At Third Man 3-6-11Live recording of Puerto Rican rock and rollers Davila 666's performance at Third Man Records in Nashville, TN on 3/06/11. Produced by Jack White and recorded live direct to analog tape. Black vinyl in plain black sleeve.
The Third Man Live records are a continuous series of full-length albums recorded in their Blue Room which is arguably the only current venue in the world where a band can record a live set direct-to-tape in front of a paying audience. These shows are recorded onto one-inch 8-track tape (usually by Grammy Award-winning engineer Vance Powell) in front of lucky-to-get-a-ticket crowds. The 8-track master is mixed to 2-track tape at Third Man Studio and that tape is then used to cut the vinyl master, thus ensuring the recording remains in the analog domain the entire time and is never transferred to a digital signal. With limited-edition, split-color, black-and-blue vinyl versions of the LP only available to attendees of the show (and on rare occasions, to Vault members for extra-special releases), the black vinyl versions of the show are of unlimited pressings. At this time the Third Man Live series is only available on vinyl and not any other format.
Describing themselves as like Menudo on drugs, San Juan, Puerto Rico's Davila 666 combine Stooges-like garage rock fire with the occasional sugary pop melodies. The seven, not six surprisingly, Davilas include singer/tambourine player Sir Charles, multi-instrumentalist AJ, guitarists/vocalists Miss Davila and Johnny Otis, drummer/guitarist/vocalist San Pablo, percussionist/vocalist Panda and guitarist/drummer/vocalist Gigi. Their theatrical live show which includes themes, props, costumes, and dancers, won them fans in the States when they toured with the Black Lips and the King Khan & BBQ Show.
Davila 666's self-titled U.S. debut was released in the summer of 2008 via In the Red Records. After a somewhat quiet year in 2009, the band came back strong in 2010, releasing an EP on Robs House Records and singles on Norton (covering the Rolling Stones' She's a Rainbow) and Vice (a split with the Dirtbombs). TempestBob Dylan's studio album, Tempest, was released in the U.S. in 2012. Featuring ten new and original Bob Dylan songs, the release of Tempest coincides with the 50th Anniversary of the artist's eponymous debut album, which was released by
Columbia in 1962.
The new album, produced by Jack Frost, is the 35th studio set from Bob Dylan, and follows 2009's worldwide best-seller, Together Through Life. Bob
Dylan's four previous studio albums have been universally hailed as among the best of his storied career, achieving new levels of commercial success and critical acclaim for the artist. The Platinum-selling Time Out Of Mind from 1997 earned multiple Grammy Awards, including Album Of The Year, while "Love and Theft" continued Dylan's Platinum streak and earned several Grammy nominations and a statue for Best Contemporary Folk album.
Modern Times, released in 2006, became one of the artist's most popular albums, selling more than 2.5 million copies worldwide and earning Dylan two
more Grammys. Together Through Life became the artist's rst album to debut at #1 in both the U.S. and the UK, as well as in ve other countries, on its way to surpassing sales of one million copies.
Those four releases fell within a 12-year creative span that also included the recording of an Oscar- and Golden Globe-winning composition, "Things
Have Changed," from the lm Wonder Boys, in 2001; a worldwide bestselling memoir, Chronicles Vol. 1, which spent 19 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller List, in 2004, and a Martin Scorsese-directed documentary, No Direction Home, in 2005. Bob Dylan also released his rst collection of holiday standards, Christmas In The Heart, in 2009, with all of the artist's royalties from that album being donated to hunger charities around the world.
This year, Bob Dylan was the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country's highest civilian honor. He was awarded a special Pulitzer Prize in 2008 for "his profound impact on popular music and American culture, marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power." He was also the recipient of the French Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres in 1990, Sweden's Polar Music Award in 2000 and several Doctorates including the

The Beach Boy's Holland, the group's 19th studio album, was recorded in Baambrugge, Netherlands in the summer of 1972 and released in January 1973. Our Analogue Productions reissue also includes a bonus 12-inch EP: Mount Vernon and Fairway (A Fairy Tale). Plus the restoration of We Got Love, eliminated from original U.S. copies of the album!
By mid-1972, with Wilson's focus waning from the Beach Boys to other creative outlets, and his personal and health-related issues mounting, Wilson was producing less music for the band than ever before. They decamped for the Netherlands hoping to jump-start Brian's creative energies.
Wilson contributed little to the album, concentrating his musical efforts on Mount Vernon and Fairway, a 10-minute long musical fairy tale eventually included with the album as a bonus EP.
The title of the bonus EP was named after the intersection where the Love family lived in Los Angeles, and where the Wilsons and Loves would gather for family celebrations back in the 1940s and '50s when Brian, Mike, Carl and Dennis were all growing up. As a concept for a Beach Boys track, Mount Vernon and Fairway initially received a less than enthusiastic response from the other band members when Brian first presented the idea to the group, and this only fueled Brian's steadily worsening depression. Eventually, Carl stepped in to produce the recording for Brian, and the decision was made to include the fairy tale in the album package as a separate EP. Brian himself designed the EP's picture sleeve.
Although Mount Vernon and Fairway (A Fairy Tale) was narrated by Jack Rieley, the voice of the Pied Piper was supplied by Brian in a slightly grainier-sounding cartoon voice.
The instrumental tracks for Mount Vernon and Fairway (A Fairy Tale) were later released on Good Vibrations: Thirty years of The Beach Boys as Fairy Tale Music.
Upon the band's return from the Netherlands in the fall, Holland was rejected by Reprise Records for not having a potential hit single. Added to the track list was an unfinished Brian Wilson song Sail On, Sailor, that he'd originally co-written with Ray Kennedy, and finally completed with the help of Van Dyke Parks, Jack Reiley and Tandyn Almer. It would ultimately become Holland's most famous track. A casualty of the album's tracklist reshuffling was another Fataar/Chaplin tune, written with Mike Love, called We Got Love. A live version was included on the group's 1973 release The Beach Boys In Concert.
Early test pressings of Holland, made in the U.S. and U.K. featured We Got Love, as did a few hundred copies pressed and sold in Germany. Early French and Canadian pressings of Holland mention We Got Love on the jacket, but the song is not on those albums. For this Holland reissue Acoustic Sounds/Analogue Productions has brought back We Got Love as a bonus track!
The highlights (of Holland are) Carl's 'The Trader,' Brian's 'Sail on, Sailor' and 'Funky Pretty' ... Al Jardine and Mike Love's three-part 'California Saga' shows the effects of their environmentalist spirituality ...(the conclusion, 'California,' is a solid return to the harmony-laden sun-and-surf '60s). 'Only with You' is yet another tender Dennis Wilson ballad, (a rare songwriting collaboration with Mike Love), given an excellent reading by Carl. - AllMusic.com

English Band's 1981 Sophomore Record A Superbly Articulate Expression of Post-Punk Gloom, Despair, and Melancholy That's Shot Through With Hope
Mastered on Mobile Fidelity's World-Renowned Mastering System and Pressed at RTI (America's Best Record Plant): LP Illuminates Myriad Textures, Atmospherics
How strong and looming of an influence is Echo and the Bunnymen? Strong enough to be the one band name-dropped in a great piece of dialogue from the music-loving film High Fidelity, whereupon Jack Black's quipping record store clerk character cites the band as legitimate taste makers for much of the cutting-edge music that happened in the late 80's and beyond.
And on no record is the English quintet's greatness more apparent than on 1981's sophomore Heaven Up Here, the group's first effort to chart in the U.S. and a Top 10 smash in its native U.K. The record's merits are legion-and timeless: vocalist Ian McCulloch's cavernous croon; dream-weaving guitar lines pushed through ominous, melodic soundscapes; neopsychedelic dirges and self-aware lyrics; glamorous drama and tortuous tension. These characteristics and more turn the music restrained euphoria and what the band called black magic.
Rife with thick atmospherics and brooding dreamscapes, the harrowing songs clatter amidst arrangements infused with requisite air, space, and chamber echoes. Silhouetted guitar leads help convey moody dampness, despair, dread, and disgust, the themes directly connected to narratives that tackle distrust, dishonesty, betrayal, and arrested dreams. Cloudy and jagged for certain, but the majesty of Heaven Up Here relates to how, in spite of the haunted arrangements and claustrophobic feel, ribbons of light and hope illuminate its shadowy corners and nocturnal glow.
Sharing much in common with Joy Division's period output and a precursor to later work by The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Cure, Love and Rockets, Ride, and countless other U.K. artists, Heaven Up Here soars on Will Seargant's angular six-string blues, McCulloch's vampiric grayness, and etched, stair-stepping bass movements.
Mastered on Mobile Fidelity's world-renowned mastering system and pressed at RTI (America's best record plant), Silver Label numbered limited edition LP presents Echo and the Bunnymen's breakthrough in an involving fidelity that blows away what's on the original pressings and annihilates Rhino's CD remaster. Listeners will revel in the opened-up reverb, sound effects, complex tonalities, swimmy textures, and crafty overdubs that are so essential to the music. This is an 80's landmark, and if you like early U2, you need this album.
About Silver Series: New from Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab, the MoFi Silver Label Vinyl Series will feature an eclectic mix of recordings. JuntoJUNTO-due out via Atlantic Jaxx/PIAS America--marks pioneering U.K. electronic music duo BASEMENT JAXX's seventh studio album.
Globally revered as innovators and leading lights of their genre, BASEMENT JAXX blew the lid off the dance music scene of the late 90's with their ground breaking albums Remedy, Rooty and Kish Kash. Having firmly established their place in the pantheon of dance music greats, the duo of Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe are back with JUNTO, a genre-hopping musical roller-coaster that showcases the band's legendary inventiveness, irresistible songwriting and production smarts.
In May, the pair debuted the club-ready, jacking Unicorn, the first track to be taken from Junto. It has met with universal praise, working as a perfect taster of what the full length has to offer. They soon followed with Mermaid Of Salinas, a samba sensation just in time for the World Cub festivities. Then came Never Say Never, the first official single from the album, currently sitting at #4 on Billboard's Club Play chart and racing up Billboard's Dance Radio chart.
Spanish for 'together,' the concept behind JUNTO is one of unity and soulfulness, fusing dance music's sub-genres into one cohesive multi-flavored confection. It's a bold, boisterous, brilliant album full of amazing guest vocal performances, richly layered production and the irresistible sense of groove that has set them apart from the very beginning. Summer is here, and the JAXX are back.

We Are Volsung (Out of Stock)They were the prime mover, they preached back seat education, together with Alice Cooper they fed Frankenstein....Now they are back, meaner, leaner and heavier than ever. Zodiac Mindwrap & The Love Reaction now enter a new decade of heavy, dirty street rock n roll and they declare We are Volsung. Inspired by Nordic mythology, the album features 10 brand new unadulterated songs including a track with the German title Stark von Oben (translation: strong from above).
1985: In a musical world of hairspray and spandex, two long haired leather clad rockers were introduced to each other by their exotic dancer girlfriends. One, a graphic artist and poet. The other, a budding philosopher. They immediately dropped everything, joined forces and created the dirtiest, wildest band of all time. One year later, they signed to Polygram, released, first the ground breaking High Priest of Love EP, and subsequently the Tattooed Beat Messiah album, containing the well received single Prime Mover. Over night, they accidentally changed the look of all the rock bands of the time from the obligatory spandex, eye liner and tinsel, to rough biker jackets, engineer boots and goatee beards.
Mötley CrÜe declared them to be their favorite band and immediately restyled themselves for the Girls, Girls, Girls record. ZMATLR grew in notoriety, touring the world and America, co-headlining arenas and theatres with Guns `N` Roses and finding themselves at home in the U.K. playing festivals and baseball stadiums with Iron Maiden. After attending a Hammersmith Odeon ZMATLR concert and giving it his seal of approval, Alice Cooper then recorded the Zodiac Mindwarp penned Feed My Frankenstein, later performed in the film Waynes World. The critical acclaim of ZMATLR then caused rare misfortune, when they lost their young naive bass player to the lures of The Cult. The band soldiered on regardless. Sometime later, in Paris, Slam Thunderhide, their drummer decided to put down his sticks to become a go-go dancer in Vancouver.
Present day: With The Cat shaking the Earth on Drums and Jack Shitt rumbling the low frequencies, they ride again, honing their skills playing for the Viking descendants in Scandinavia. From these tough, manly ordeals, a new set of recordings have been forged. We Are Volsung is the result, a celebration in the Norse tradition, 10 songs of pure, unadulterated rock.1. Stark Von Oben
