All The Light Above It Too

Jack Johnson has announced that his next album is called All the Light Above It Too. The album features the slyly political lead single My Mind Is for Sale.

This album shares what has been on my mind during the past year or so, says Johnson in a statement. A year in which I sailed through the North Atlantic Gyre -- a circular system of ocean currents -- for a documentary about plastic pollution in the ocean. A year in which [Donald] Trump was elected as the President of the United States.

A year in which I camped, surfed, got stitches, explored, dreamed, shared time and endless conversations with my family and friends, he continues. All of which inspired these songs.

Sing-A-Longs and Lullabies For The Film Curious George

Sing-A-Longs and Lullabies for the Film Curious George is a soundtrack album by Jack Johnson and friends for the 2006 film Curious George. Along with Johnson, it features Adam Topol, Ben Harper, G. Love, Kawika Kahiapo, Matt Costa, Merlo Podlewski and Zach Gill. It was released on February 7, 2006, topping the U.S. Billboard Top 200, selling 149,000 copies in the process, and reaching #1 in the Australian albums (ARIA) chart in its debut week and in Canada on the Nielson Soundcan chart on the following February 25, remaining there for four consecutive weeks.

This was the first soundtrack to make it to #1 since the Bad Boys II soundtrack in August 2003 and was the first soundtrack to an animated film to top the Billboard 200 since the Pocahontas soundtrack reigned for one week in July 1995.

Jack Johnson & Friends: Best Of The Kukua Festival

Just in time for Earth Day, Brushfire Records will release Jack Johnson and Friends: Best of Kokua Festival. The album features a 13-track compilation of live performances from Jack Johnson's benefit concerts for the Kokua Hawaii Foundation. Proceeds from Jack Johnson and Friends: Best of Kokua Festival will benefit the Kokua Hawaii Foundation.

Culled from six years of his eco-minded music festival, Jack Johnson and Friends: Best of Kokua Festival, highlights onstage collaborations with legendary musicians like Willie Nelson, Jackson Browne, Eddie Vedder, Ben Harper, Dave Mathews, Ziggy and Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley and more.

Johnson and his band team up with more than a dozen guest artists to perform both original works and spirited covers of classic songs. The album features several of Johnson's breezy folk-rock gems, including "Constellations" (with Eddie Vedder), "Mudfootball" (with Ozomatli & G. Love), "Breakdown" (with ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro), and "Better Together" (with Hawaiian singer Paula Fuga).

Elsewhere on Jack Johnson and Friends: Best of Kokua Festival, Johnson joins his guests for stripped-down renditions of their own songs: Taj Mahal offers his bluesy "Further On Down The Road," Jackson Browne revisits "Take It Easy" with the help of singer/guitarist John Cruz (who also shares his Hawaiian anthem "Island Style"), and the Marley brothers bring the reggae with Ziggy's "Cry, Cry, Cry" and Damian's dancehall banger "Welcome to Jamrock."

Rounding out the record are an eclectic collection of covers, including Bob Marley's "High Tide or Low Tide" (featuring Ben Harper), Bob Dylan's "I Shall Be Released" (featuring Eddie Vedder) and Jimmy Buffet's "A Pirate Looks at Forty" (featuring Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds). Willie Nelson, meanwhile, delivers a Harper-assisted take on "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain," the Fred Rose-penned classic he popularized.

Held on Earth Day weekend at Honolulu's Waikiki Shell since its inception in 2004, the Kokua Festival serves as both a community-centered celebration of music and environmental awareness and as the major fundraiser for the Kokua Hawaii Foundation (a nonprofit organization founded by Johnson and his wife Kim in 2003 to support environmental education in the schools and communities of Hawaii). Like the festival itself, Jack Johnson and Friends: Best of Kokua Festival spotlights artists who share the Kokua Hawaii Foundation's mission of protecting the planet and cultivating environmental consciousness.

Audiophile Reference Sonics: Mobile Fidelity LP Presents Lean, Stripped-Back, and Open Sound With Startling Immediacy and Realism

Soundtrack Merges Electric Fusion, Slashing Rock, and Aggressive Funk Via Astounding Lineup: Guitarist John McLaughlin and Trumpeter Davis Turn In Blistering Performances

Powerhouse 1971 Album the Greatest Jazz-Rock Record Ever Made

The album cover to Trust speaks volumes: Elvis Costello, bathed in shadows, his eyes nervously peering out from behind his sunglasses, his face conveying a combination of edgy noir purpose and guilt-ridden anxiety. Indeed, the tension-rich songs within largely convey the opposite meanings of the record's title, with the British icon musing on what lies beyond arrogant youth and immediate success with a jaundiced, scarred perspective informed by his country's political climate and his own experiences.

Miles Davis' A Tribune to Jack Johnson is the best jazz-record ever made. Equally inspired by the leader's desire to assemble the "greatest rock and roll band you have ever heard" as well as his adoration of Johnson, Davis created a hard-hitting set that spills over with excitement, intensity, majesty, and power. Bridging the electric fusion he'd pursued on earlier efforts with a funkier, dirtier rhythmic approach, Davis zeroes in on concepts of spontaneity, freedom, and identity seldom achieved in the studio. Mobile Fidelity's sterling reissue brings it all to fore with unsurpassed realism.

Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed at RTI, this collectable audiophile vinyl version of A Tribute to Jack Johnson joins the ranks of eleven other essential Davis sets given supreme sonic and packaging treatment by Mobile Fidelity. The most prominent difference longtime fans will notice is how much more aggressive and immediate the music sounds, aspects central to the composer's desires. Amazing degrees of instrumental separation and imaging allow you to focus on singular musicians and the roles they play.

Indeed, utilizing wah-wah and distortion, guitarist John McLaughlin comes on here with a nasty edge, slashing style, and vicious streak that allows A Tribute to Jack Johnson finally cross the divide between rock and jazz. Davis puts both feet in the former camp and permanently erasing any gap. In addition to highlighting McLaughlin's ripping performances, Mobile Fidelity's 180g LP showcases the headliner's white-hot trumpet solos like never before. Bristling with exuberance, Davis' high-register passages explode with authority and commanding presence. Around him, a barrage of urgent backbeats, knifing riffs, and three-dimension bass lines emerge amidst an ink-black background.

Music Composed and Conducted by Hugo Friedhofer

From the moment of their inception, some films are simply destined to become legendary in one way or another and Marlon Brando s sole directorial effort had legend stamped on it from the get-go. Based on the book The Authentic Death of Hendry Jones by Charles Neider, the film s first script was written by a young up-and-coming writer named Sam Peckinpah. It was subsequently re-written by Calder Willingham and then Guy Trosper. After viewing a movie called The Killing, Brando hired its director, Stanley Kubrick. By the time the film went before the cameras, Kubrick was gone and Brando was not only starring, but also directing. While the end result might not be to everyone s liking, the fact is that the finished film is oddly compelling, poetic, and sometimes completely bizarre, and fully deserving of its legendary cult status.

The film looks gorgeous it was the final film made in Paramount s brilliant process, VistaVision, and the great Charles Lang was the director of photography. The cast also included Karl Malden, Katy Jurado, Ben Johnson, Slim Pickens, and the supremely weird Timothy Carey. There are some truly great scenes and some eminently quotable dialogue ( Get up off the floor, you scum-sucking pig ). But what gives the film a great deal of its luster and brilliance is the score by Hugo Friedhofer.

    Total Explosion (Pure Pleasure)

During his eight-year stint with Hi Records, Syl Johnson was in the shadows of both Al Green and Ann Peebles. His albums never flew off the shelves but he could be trusted to release two or three good singles a year. By 1975, Johnson's partnership with Hi Records started to yield even more success. As this album's predecessors had Johnson vacillating between being a romantic and a wretch, Total Explosion explores his unrepentant side with good results. I Only Have Love for You is a classic Memphis shuffle and finds Johnson all but boasting about his lack of financial savvy, as he sings, »all I got to give is me«. With all of the ill will and venom spewed on Total Explosion, the innocent Star Bright, Star Lite just still doesn't ring true. Johnson comes back to his senses on Steppin' Out. The dramatic, hard-edged track is all anger and domestic unrest as he sings, »excuse me, excuse me while I get dressed«; you get the feeling he won't be back anytime soon. The album's biggest single was Johnson's slowed-down take on Green's Take Me To The River. Although the religious/sexual imagery is lost in the translation, Johnson does a good job with it. The best track, the brilliantly arranged Watch What You Do to Me has Johnson playing the role of cuckold, and as he sings »I carry my piece, everywhere I go«, it certainly made him more a menace than romantic balladeer. Total Explosion was Johnson's most successful album at Hi Records and was one of the best in the label's catalog.

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Jack Johnson has stitched together an organically focused, acoustic-centered collection that would seem as welcome on a shady creek bank as a sunny, wave-lapped beach. Johnson offers up an acoustic take of his sophomore album's Holes to Heaven and the sprightly instrumentals Moonshine and Cove, while longtime associate G. Love duets on the spare, rootsy Rainbow. Love and band Special Sauce also contribute the even grittier instrumental Hobo Blues and laconic Honor and Harmony.

The 180° South soundtrack features new music from James Mercer (The Shins, Broken Bells w/Danger Mouse), Mason Jennings, and Ugly Casanova (Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse with various collaborators), all of whom participated significantly in the overall film project. Songs by Jack Johnson and Love as Laughter also appear, as well as James Mercer's cover of Neil Young's Journey Through The Past. The compilation was assembled by the film's producer, Emmett Malloy, who recently directed The White Stripes' Under Great White Northern Lights.

Director Chris Malloy's film strikes deeply into the heart of Patagonia's wilderness, it was there, during the making of the film that the soundtrack was conceived. Mason Jennings and James Mercer visited Patagonia during the shooting of the film. Deeply impacted, they spent the following weeks, months and years that followed, writing music and enlisting friends such as Modest Mouse's Isaac Brock and Jack Johnson to help get the soundtrack made.

180 Gram Vinyl In Gatefold Jacket With Metallic 5th Color

A band with improvisational tendencies and a laid-back California vibe, ALO (Animal Liberation Orchestra) became a hit on the jam band circuit while enjoying a close association with superstar Jack Johnson. Members Zach Gill (keyboards/vocals), Steve Adams (bass/vocals), and Dan Lebowitz (guitars/vocals) had all known one another since their days at Saratoga High School, but it wasn't until their relocation to Santa Barbara that they decided to form a band. While studying at the University of California, the musicians were introduced to Jack Johnson and drummer David Brogan, the latter of whom joined ALO while they were using the name Django.

Numerous name changes, the addition (and subtraction) of a horn section, a number of lineup changes following Brogan's brief departure, and other problems plagued the band during its early years. Even though they were earning a loyal following around Santa Barbara, the band's instability convinced them to move back to their hometown of Saratoga. A couple more drummers came through the ranks before Brogan returned in 2002, and ALO's fortunes improved as the band began releasing material. An EP, Time Expander, and the band's debut album, Fly Between Falls, both appeared in 2005. Fly Between Falls was reissued a year later on Johnson's own Brushfire label, coinciding with ALO's high-profile tour as the opening act for the Dave Matthews Band.

    Changes Two (On Sale)

Along with its companion volume Changes One, this is one of the great sessions from one of the best working bands of the 1970s. Starting with the spirited Free Cell Block F, 'Tis Nazi U.S.A, this volume also includes the vocal version of Duke Ellington's Sound of Love with guest singer (and acquired taste) Jackie Paris, a remake of the classic Mingus composition Orange Was the Color of Her Dress, Then Silk Blue, Jack Walrath's Black Bats and Poles, and Sy Johnson's For Harry Carney. The challenging repertoire from these December 1974 dates sustained the Jazz Workshop for several years; these are the definitive performances.

    Mother's Milk

1989's Mother's Milk is the album that broke the Red Hot Chili Peppers into the rock mainstream. Despite suffering the loss of drummer Jack Irons and guitarist Hillel Slovak a year earlier, founding members Anthony Kiedis and Flea found exceptional replacements in Chad Smith and John Frusciante. A cover of Stevie Wonder's Higher Ground and a tribute to Slovak, Knock Me Down, were both big MTV successes, as were such other highlights as Taste the Pain (featured prominently in the movie Say Anything), Good Time Boys, Subway to Venus, Magic Johnson and Sexy Mexican Maid.

Originally released in 1974, Big Fun presents music from three different phases of Miles Davis's early-seventies electric period.

Sides one and four (Great Expectations and Lonely Fire) were recorded three months after the Bitches Brew sessions and incorporate sitar, tambura, tabla, and other Indian instruments. They also mark the first time since the beginning of Miles Davis's electric period that he played his trumpet with the Harmon mute which had been one of his hallmarks, making it sound much like the sitar. This contributed to creating a very clear and lean sound, highlighting both the high and low registers, as opposed to the busier sound of Bitches Brew which placed more emphasis on the middle and low registers.

Ife was recorded after the 1972 On the Corner sessions, and the framework is similar to tracks from that record. It has a drum and electric bass groove and a plethora of musicians improvising individually and in combinations over variations on the hypnotic bassline.

Recorded in March 1970, Go Ahead John is an outtake from Davis's Jack Johnson sessions. The recording is a riff and groove-based, with a relatively sparser line-up of Steve Grossman on soprano saxophone, Dave Holland on bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums, and John McLaughlin on guitar with wah-wah pedal.

The Ghost Who Walks/Stolen Roses (On Sale)

Karen Elson's The Ghost Who Walks marks the debut solo release from the British singer/songwriter. Her transformation from fashion's favorite redheaded ingÉnue to beguiling chanteuse has been something of a slow burn. In 2003 she provided vocals for a version of Robert Plant's ''Last Time I Saw Her'' and in 2006 she recorded an English language version of ''Je T'Aime..Moi Non Plus'' (''I Love You... Me Neither'') with Cat Power for a Serge Gainsbourg tribute album, but her main musical outlet has been as a founding member of New York City cabaret The Citizens Band, a downtown collective of musicians, performers, artists and acrobats whose lively Weimar-esque performances have enjoyed successful theatrical runs of their politically thematic shows.

Writing almost exclusively in the sanctuary of a closet in her bedroom, Karen's songwriting blossomed. A fledgling songwriter might naturally be nervous to play their work for a spouse but for Karen the trepidation was exacerbated by her husband's own talent. It took many months of cajoling for Karen to play Jack White her songs but his reaction was immediate: let's get into the studio.

Karen has already won accolades for her stunning voice, but The Ghost Who Walks is still bound to surprise those who've never seen her perform with her cabaret troupe. The songwriting is especially impressive and, as something of a music obsessive since an early age, Karen sites a long list of influences and inspirations, including Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, Sandy Denny, Opal and Rain Parade. The track The Ghost Who Walks, also the title of her forthcoming album, is a haunting murder ballad but the title came from a high school nickname which Karen endured before embarking on her fashion career. It's an apt title for an elegant and haunting album.
