    The Diary Instrumentals

PayJay Productions, Inc. was the company James Dewitt "J Dilla" Yancey founded in 2001 to
house his production company and his publishing company.

The Estate of James Yancey has revived PayJay as a functioning imprint, and announced the
release of J Dilla's long lost vocal album, The Diary. The tracks come straight from multi-track
masters found on 2-inch tape shortly after Dilla's passing in 2006. Many were mixed by Dilla
himself. Those that weren't have been mixed by engineer Dave Cooley, who worked
extensively with Dilla during his years in Los Angeles. Using Dilla's original demo mixes as his
guide, Cooley attempted to finalize Dilla's vision for these tracks, while keeping all of the
elements that Dilla had in place in his original demos present.

The Diary is now available as an instrumental release, featuring production by the likes of
Madlib, Pete Rock, Nottz, House Shoes, Karriem Riggins and others.

    Labcabincalifornia

The Pharcyde's landmark Labcabincalifornia just hit its 20th anniversary, having originally been released on November 14th, 1995. The Bicycle Music Company celebrates with an all new pressing of the double gatefold LP. The Pharcyde released Labcabincalifornia, their follow up to their legendary debut Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde (itself released on November 24th, 1992) with the album ultimately launching three singles, "Runnin'", "She Said" and "Drop" (which would go on to massive MTV music video fame due to it's first ever entirely backwards filmed video directed by Spike Jonze).

Over the next 20 years, the legacy of The Pharcyde and Labcabincalifornia has continued to rise. In the case of Labcabincalifornia, that's in no small part due to the production work on the project from the legendary Jay Dee, aka J Dilla. "If Labcabincalifornia came out today, boasting production by J Dilla on seven out of 17 tracks would be a big deal..." - Complex Magazine

"Labcabincalifornia is an artistic breakthrough, and because of the deep shift in hip-hop production in the last two decades, the timelessness of the album is more apparent than ever." - Treble Music's Induction of Labcabincalifornia into their Hall Of Fame "Years ahead of its time for a scene still hung over from The Chronic, Labcabincalifornia was an underappreciated album that would almost certainly have fared better amidst the alt-rap renaissance of 1999." - Rap Reviews

PayJay Productions, Inc. was the company James Dewitt J Dilla Yancey founded in 2001 to house his production company and his publishing company. But it was also a symbolic move: PayJay was a sign that the maverick producer then known as Jay Dee would see his individual goals in music industry realized, and he would get paid in the process.

The Estate of James Yancey has revived PayJay as a functioning imprint, and is announcing its release of J Dilla's long lost vocal album, The Diary. The Estate of James Yancey is administered by attorney Alex Borden and overseen by the Probate Court of the State of California on behalf of Yancey's four heirs - his mother, Maureen Madukes Yancey, his brother John Illa J Yancey and his two daughters, Ja'Mya Yancey and Ty-monae Whitlow.

Anthem and Trucks were two of the songs J Dilla recorded in late 2001 and early 2002 as he put the finishing touches on what was supposed to be an album featuring his raps over production by the likes of Madlib, Pete Rock, Nottz, House Shoes, Karriem Riggins and others. These two tracks, however, were produced by Dilla himself.

These tracks come straight from multi-track masters found on 2-inch tape shortly after Dilla's passing in 2006. These songs have been mixed by engineer Dave Cooley, who worked extensively with Dilla during his years in Los Angeles. Using Dilla's original demo mixes as his guide, Cooley attempted to finalize Dilla's vision for these tracks, while keeping all of the elements that Dilla had in place in his original demos present.

Rounding out this 12 is Dilla's original mix of Trucks discovered as a two-track demo mix. We've included this mix as it features an alternate version of Dilla's vocals and a third verse not found on Dilla's final sessions for this song.

    Jay Dee's Ma Dukes Collection

Since his untimely death at the all too young age of 32 the world has grown to appreciate the work of J Dilla even more than when he was alive. There's an ethereal quality to Jay Dee's works, part boom bap but more mellow.Mellow, but never soft. And Dilla never stopped making beats, his MPC wasby his side until the very end. It now resides in the Smithsonian. Due theprolific nature of his beat making, the world is blessed to have stacks of Dilla material - some coming to light even this many years after his passing.

In the world of hip hop, no one's mother is more famous that Ma Dukes. Go ahead, name check Chuck D's mom or Chance the Rapper's mom or TI'smother - without hitting Google. And one of the reasons we all know Ma Dukes is her tireless effort to maintain Dilla's legacy. This release is yet another step in that direction.

Presented here, from the Official Ma Dukes Collection, are 15 works by Jay Dee from deep in the vaults, being released on vinyl for the first time.

Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and raised in the city of Montreal, 23
year-old Canadian artist Kaytranada is widely regarded as one of
the most important new producers in the musical landscape today.
Since the age of fourteen, when he first began to DJ and when his
brother introduced him to music production software, his output has
been relentless. As he explains, "after he showed me the basics,
from that day on I couldn't stop making beats," pumping out a beat
a day for the next couple of years and soon after self-releasing a series
of EPs and beat tapes that quickly began to expand his reach.

Single releases like "Drive Me Crazy" with Vic Mensa and "Leave
Me Alone" with Shay Lia soon spread his name like wildfire and
gained listens reaching far into the millions. In addition to that
he's produced for artists such as Mobb Deep, Kali Uchis, Freddie
Gibbs, The Internet, & Talib Kweli and remixed the likes of Disclosure,
Pharrell, Missy Elliot, Janet Jackson, and others. Kaytranada
soon cemented his reputation and his sound; an undeniable swing
of the drums comparable to J Dilla's, a signature soulful touch in the
melodies, and a healthy dose of funky bass lines. Last year he was
tapped by the legendary Rick Rubin who has acted as a mentor,
eventually signing him to a publishing relationship.

99.9% will be Kaytranada's first debut album on XL Recordings.
The 15-track album includes guest vocals from Anderson .Paak,
AlunaGeorge, BADBADNOTGOOD, Craig David, Syd, Little Dragon,

Delicious Vinyl will proudly release Sunset Blvd., the new album from Yancey Boys, the group piloted by John "Illa J" Yancey and Frank Nitt. The dynamic new collection is built around previously unheard tracks created by Illa J's brother: the late, great J Dilla (James Yancey). With Frank Nitt's standing as J Dilla Music Catalog Curator and the official approval of Yancey Media Group, all productions on Sunset Blvd. originate from The Lost Scrolls - the stunning cache of beats Dilla left behind.

With its rapturous single "Quicksand" featuring Common, Sunset Blvd. also teams Yancey Boys with De La Soul's Posdnuos ("Beautiful"), The Pharcyde's SlimKid3 ("Rock My World"), and T3 of Slum Village ("Jeep Volume"), making it clear that the Dilla legacy is being represented by those who knew and collaborated with Dilla in his lifetime. Additional guests on Sunset Blvd. include DJs Rhettmatic, C-Minus, and JRocc (Beat Junkies) as well as rap roughneck Guilty Simpson and R&B strongman Eric Roberson. "We've created an album that would make Dilla proud," says Frank Nitt, who grew up with Dilla in Detroit. "But this isn't a nostalgia trip: Dilla's beats were so future-forward that they're right on time in 2013, and we've assembled the best artists possible to represent that."

    Slum Village, Vol. 0

The mark that the late producer J Dilla left upon hip-hop during the 90s and early-to-mid 00s is undeniable, and his work with De La Soul, Busta Rhymes, The Pharcyde, and many more has long been cemented in the annals of hip-hop history. It was during his time as a member of seminal Detroit group Slum Village however that ranks as among his greatest. His work with rappers Baatin and T3 would be a strong influence upon modern rappers like Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar and earn widespread critical praise, and comparisons to other legendary groups like A Tribe Called Quest. In speaking retrospectively on their most famous album Fan-Tas-Tic Vol. 1, The Roots' drummer Questlove has said of the release that it single-handedly birthed neo-soul.

J Dilla has been gone for over 10 years now, and Slum Village has moved on from their time with the legendary beatsmith, recruiting new members along the way. Despite this, new Dilla compositions are still being discovered, and his legacy continues to be shared and celebrated with a modern hip-hop audience. Ne'Astra Music Group now presents a new compilation of rare Dilla material: Vol. 0. Ten tracks featuring the classic Slum Village lineup of Dilla on vocals and production, with Baatin & T3 also on the mic, collected by modern SV member Young RJ from unreleased material and demos recorded between 1994 and 1997. The knowledgeable hip-hop head may recognize key tracks from the circulated EPHCY Sessions, while others have never seen the light of day. A piece of hip-hop history that would have otherwise wallowed in obscurity, until now.

For Fans of: Gnarls Barkley, Beck, J Dilla, Gorillaz, Danger Mouse

There's something about Cole Williams's voice that conjures pictures in the mind.
Not only through the intense and compelling vocals of his recordings, either.
There's a catch to it, a rugged rasp weathered beyond his years, that shows that his
singing style - rich in the cadences of funk, blues and soul. Spend any time with
them, and it's abundantly clear that Cole - or if you prefer, The Child Of Lov - is a
    true modern soul man.

This much we know: Cole has lived in London, Paris and Amsterdam where he's
currently based. He has, for various reasons, spent a good deal of time alone with
music. His first inspirations were his mother's Stevie Wonder albums. By the age
of 13 he was listening to hip hop and neo-soul, and began to try and make his own
beats on his computer, and initially to rap. At 14, he began to teach himself guitar
and piano, and became obsessed with the off-kilter hip hop beats of J Dilla and
especially Madlib, the master of the thickly-layered psychedelic groove. Inspired
by the combination of unorthodox musicality with hip hop attitude, as he picked
out his own melodies and slowly developed his instrumental skills; it all came
    together.

So here we are: from those years' worth of self-disciplined musical study and
practice recordings, then a period of adjusting to their exposure to the world, have
come the tracks that became The Child Of Lov album. They're layered with all
the intensity and dedication that Cole has put into his listening and learning, and
with his passion for the influences. Check out "Give Me" - the peculiar stutter of
his abstract hip hop heroes Madlib and Dilla is there, but so is his first inspiration
Stevie Wonder as well as brilliantly discordant hints of Prince and even Tom Waits
in full junkyard prophet mode. Listen to the powerfully defiant "Fly" and wonder
that the powerful, gospel-infused voice is that of a young man, and not a soul
veteran beaten but unbowed by life's tribulations and soak up the mournful opener
"Call Me Up" - the sort of track you'd always hoped Sly Stone might pull himself

    Love Now

Mean Lady is the duo of Katie Dill and Sam Nobles. They are from Delaware and they're both really nice. Really, really nice. For their new debut LP the duo have written a collection of songs about lust, innocence and vulnerability.

Pitchfork have premiered first single "Far Away," writing, "'Far Away' wouldn't feel out of place on the last Youth Lagoon record, an out-of-time waltz flanked by aqueous sound effects. It's a prelude to something far more vigorous, though, as squishy beats, sprightly piano plinks, and an approximation of a sitar server as the backdrop for Katie Dill's transcontinental love letter."

Through bubbly synths and rhythmic production, Dill and Nobles managed to cobble together a timeless, concise pop record. It's a finished product that could only exist when kids from Delaware grew up, trashed all their soul records and then got high some time after DJ Shadow started to suck but probably before J Dilla died.

Love Now is deep and rich. The sound is Sam's wonderfully abrupt sampling and skipping drum beats underneath the band's live instruments. All of this is anchored by Katie's songwriting and sharp, but sweet vocals. Take heed: this is an important debut for a young band.

Nacional Records is excited to announce the vinyl release of Mexican Institute of Sound's (M.I.S.) critically acclaimed,
DJ-favorite albums 'Politico,' 'Pinata,' 'Mejico Maxico and 'Soy Sauce.'

Their third album traverses Camilo Lara's wild musical imagination with a witty sense of humor for good effect - whether it's converting the traditional sounds of cumbia to a full on electronic dance track, paying tribute to J Dilla and Biggie with Mexican sonidos, or singing a love song as if Serge Gainsbourg had spent time in the Mayan jungle. Special guests include Ad-Rock (Beastie Boys), Mexican pop star Paty Cantu, Joselo Rangel (CafÉ Tacuba), and Brazilian singer Pat C.

M.I.S. tours the world performing at major festivals like Coachella and Lollapalooza, with a wide range of
high-profile television and videogame uses, including HBO 'Entourage' & 'East Bound & Down,' as well as
'Californication' and videogames like EA Sports' 'FIFA' and the new 'Grand Theft Auto V', for which he curated
one of the radio stations 'East Los FM.'

The sound of old Mexican cumbias, boleros and mariachi tunes scrambled with samples, effects and beats.

Son Little, the singer and songwriter born Aaron Livingston, is the easygoing musical alchemist of our time. He is a conjurer, and much like those of his heroes Stevie Wonder and Jimi Hendrix, his songs are deconstructions of the diaspora of American R&B. Deftly he weaves different eras of the sound-blues, soul, gospel, rock and roll-through his own unique vision, never forced, always smooth, each note a tributary on the flowing river of rhythm and blues. And now, with his second full-length album, New Magic, he has delivered a profound statement, a cohesive creation that captures the diverse spirit of American music in a fresh and modern way.

The song that serves as the album's true centerpiece is Blue Magic, a Philly Soul inspired number deconstructed almost like a rap song or the best of production savants like J Dilla or Madlib, complete with chiming glockenspiel bells and old school female backing vocals. The song has the appeal of an instant classic. On the heels of his 2015 self-titled debut and the 5-song EP, Songs I Forgot, that came before it, Son Little found his reach steadily growing. His song Lay Down had been streamed over seven million times, he had toured the world with artists as diverse as Leon Bridges, Kelis, Mumford & Sons, Portual. The Man and Shakey Graves in addition to his own headlining runs, and also became a Grammy Award winning producer, earning a 2016 Best Roots Performance award for his work on Mavis Staples.

Phantogram's music sounds like it's made by a band from the city. Electronic loops, hip-hop beats, shoegaze, soul, and pop each find its way into their songs. Unexpectedly, the band doesn't live and work in a major urban center, but rather calls the town of Saratoga Springs, NY home. Despite the cultural influence of local Skidmore College (where fellow beat-experimenters Ratatat formed) Saratoga isn't exactly teeming with fans of J. Dilla, My Bloody Valentine or Serge Gainsbourg. Using various samplers, tapes, records, synths, drums, and both percussive and stringed instruments, Josh Carter and Sarah Barthel, the duo that make up Phantogram have allowed their natural surroundings and metropolitan influences to mix, resulting in brilliant, unusual recordings that are beautiful yet hard, dreamlike yet substantial, danceable yet smart.

Night Beds, the musical project of 26-year-old Colorado Springs native Winston Yellen, received much acclaim for his 2013 debut album, Country Sleep, scoring plaudits for its tortured take on alt country and Yellen's soaring vocals. But after finishing that album and before Country Sleep was even released, Yellen began experimenting with the kind of melancholic, neon-tinged R&B that makes up the mesmerising Ivywild. The thread that weaves through all of Yellen's music and holds it together is his unmistakable voice - plaintive, yearning, soulful, heartbreaking. Whether it's ascending over the luscious epic-electronics of Tide Teeth or aching alone on Country Sleep's opener Faithful Heights, Yellen's voice has a unique beauty matched by few of his contemporaries. The second Night Beds album draws on Yellen's original love of Bill Evans through to J Dilla and is made up of what Yellen calls sad sex jams and was inspired by a long-term love and a break-up which looms large throughout the albums veiled lyrics. Its genesis can be found in the stoned night in Nashville when Yellen first heard Yeezus. Lying on the floor, Yellen blared the album at top volume. Ivywild is a truly collaborative effort with a makeshift team of 25 musicians, notably Abe, Yellen's younger brother and closest friend - his credit on the album comes above Winston's own, so much value does he place upon the work Abe put in. Additional vocals come from Heather Hibbard, a singer from Maine who features on over half of the 16 track album, and was contacted by the gregarious Yellen through YouTube, after he found a video of her covering one of his songs. She came out to the studio the very next day. Finessing the poignant assortment of songs was a sometimes painful task, but dedicated to the core. I felt at some points we were losing our minds, he says. Initial versions of Me Liquor and God band On High: were 17 and 33 minutes respectively while Finished took four months to record. His editing process though was simple: If it makes you cry, keep it in. Field recordings also flood the record, offering it a deep textural grain. It is a luxury record, but it has a worn shirt feel, explains Yellen. It's lived in. It's like a quilt - but it took forever, cutting up all the vocals and letting it breathe.

Splinter (Songs From A Broken Mind)

'Splinter' (Songs From A Broken Mind) is the inspired new album by pioneer, chart-topper and influential artist Gary Numan.'Splinter' features guitarist Robin Finck (Nine Inch Nails, Guns N Roses), is produced by long-standing collaborator Ade Fenton, and will be followed by a full national headline tour in November.

The album finds Gary on fine dark electronic form; sounding both cutting-edge and classic Numan, it marks his best work since the late 70s, early 80s heyday.'Splinter''s opening gambit 'I Am Dust' is a statement of intent, combining heavy grind with his archetypal anthemic pop skills. The unsettling whispered verses, crunchy guitars and Hans Zimmer-esque strings on 'Here In The Black' create a sense of menace and drama, whilst more orchestral work adorns the cinematic 'The Calling'. Slower-burning ballads 'Lost', 'Where I Can Never Be' and 'My Last Day', highlight the album's broad palate, adding elements of subtlety and even beauty in contrast to the album's more aggressive moments.

Gary's knack for sexy, idiosyncratic dancefloor killers is strongly evident on the pounding, growling throb of 'Love Hurt Bleed', whilst 'Who Are You' carries equal clout as-body-music-Numan-style - infectious, but sounding unlike anything else you might hear blasting from a soundsystem.
Although Numan released a straight-to-the-fanbase album 'Dead Son Rising' in 2011, this is his first self-penned full album since 'Jagged' in 2006.

In recent years he's been quoted as an influence by everyone from Lady Gaga to Kanye West, Matthew Dear to Queens Of The Stone Age, The Foo Fighters, Nine Inch Nails, Prince and J Dilla, to Boyz Noise, Richie Hawtin and Battles (they released a single 'My Machines' on Warp Records with Numan in 2011).
But while Numan's unique style continues to connect with fans from the worlds of metal, hip hop, electronica, industrial and indie, he remains as focussed as ever in pursuing his own singular vision. 'Splinter' sounds unique, while also utilising new sounds and ideas.

Perhaps it's the voice - one of the most distinctive in music and often associated with machines and icy alienation, but for those who are drawn to Numan's songs, his singing is strangely emotional, almost soulful in places. And if you like that side of his writing, you certainly won't be disappointed with the new album, where there are several tracks that set Numan's vocals against moody, atmospheric torch songs to stunning effect.

    A Constant Moth

LP Is Packaged In 2-Panel Art Sleeve On High Quality Paper

Welcome to the world of Lord RAJA, a strange, sometimes perilous
alternate dimension withbeauty and decay in equal measure. It's a
world built on the beat-centric music which flows through New York
native Chester Raj Anand's stream of consciousness; here, half-remembered hip-hop classics are spliced into '90s IDM, ambient,
footwork, and experimental sound design. Our latest dispatch from
Lord RAJA's uncanny realm is the impulsive and unpredictable A
Constant Moth LP, 12 hyper-detailed scenes ripped from the surreal
mayhem at play in the mind of this talented young producer.

After releasing his lush Rubies EP with Ghostly in the spring of 2013,
Lord RAJA has travelled further down the wormhole opened by J Dilla,
Dabrye, and Aphex Twin, seeking a place to call his own. His debut
album, A Constant Moth, is that cosmic destination, and has been
carved out and personalized with a strong sense of texture, rhythm,
and spaciousness. Productions like Skyre and Pistol Refix put forth
heavily smashing beats as the foundation of Lord RAJA's palace, while
opulent dancefloor heaters Throw Them Out (System) and De Lia Lu
Lu build glittering pillars from juke experiments and low-res
electroisms, respectively. Warp affiliate Jeremiah Jae graces the
atonal thump of Van Go like a knight paying his respects in RAJA's
court, and beatless synth composition Gottfried Semper billows in
the astral landscape's warm breeze. As far as we can discern, A
Constant Moth is the most eclectic and fully realized depiction of Lord
    RAJA's far-o! galaxy to date.

But these 12 tracks are indeed just a glimpse into the sheer scope of
the East Coast artist's musical vision, as A Constant Moth boasts a
brisk 35-minute runtime that'll leave you itching to jump into its
dizzying barrage again. From the opening moments of Yelleo E-
with its jittery rhythmic workout and whirlpool atmospheres-to the
warbling radio transmissions which close out Golden Gravity Birds,
Lord RAJA's debut LP delivers an intricate portrait of a burgeoning
new producer. A Constant Moth is one of those rare records that
sounds precociously self-assured while also hinting at a vast sonic
universe that he's only begun to explore.

Freddie Gibbs is the product of violent, drug-laden streets but unlike most rappers with similar resumes, he brings the block to the booth
without inhibition or an exaggerated rap persona. Piñata, a 17 track collaboration with producer Madlib, is the best distillation yet of his
transparent approach to making music, combining an at times stark honesty with electrifying talent as a lyricist and performer.

Piñata is "a gangster Blaxploitation film on wax," says Gibbs, who came up on the streets of Gary, Indiana, the disregarded city previously
best known for producing Michael Jackson. Here he is joined by Mac Miller, Earl Sweatshirt, Raekwon, Scarface, Domo Genesis, Ab-Soul
and a host of others in setting his soliloquies of the streets alongside film snippets and dusted funk, soul and prog musical tapestries. While
this is the latest in a series of single-artist collaborations for Madlib, after Jaylib (J Dilla), Madvillainy (MF Doom) and the street-centric
O.J. Simpson with Detroit's Guilty Simpson, the pairing is unique as it is the first time for Gibbs working with just one producer.

On Piñata, where Gibbs can shift from textbook lessons in robbing and drugging on trackslike "Scarface" and "Knicks," to perhaps the
album's most personal song, "Broken," a collaboration with Scarface, who, along with Tupac, DMX and 50 Cent, make up the rapper's own
Mount Rushmore of MCs ("You're getting a hurricane of all those motherfuckers hitting you at once when you listen to Freddie Gibbs," he
says). "Deeper," a Gibbs favorite and the third single from the album after "Thuggin'" (2012) and "Shame," (2013) is an ode to hip-hop in
the mold of Common's "I Used to Love H.E.R."; "High," featuring Danny Brown, is self-explanatory and just what you would expect from
Gibbs, Madlib and one of Detroit's finest; while on "Real," Gibbs addresses an old score just as Michael Corleone settled all family business
    on baptism day.

As a producer, Madlib, quite simply, is music, and ten years into his career-a time when other artists become comfortable-Gibbs remains
restless, focused, with an eye on the competition and their position relative to his ascent. This is because mentally, he's still on the corner
hustling, which would be the downfall of the average rapper. With Piñata, Gibbs confirms that he is anything but average.

Grammy-nominated artist Bilal (Philadelphia, PA) returns with his third
studio album, Airtights Revenge. A provocative genre-bending album
that dissects love, politics and relationships, Airtights Revenge
demonstrates the Philly-bred singers growth as an artist. Its a mix
of Jazz, Hip Hop, Soul, Blues, and experimental free music, says
Bilal. The differences in economical social classes inspired the track
Robots, which scrutinizes societal and governmental effects on
people. Bilal wrote Who Are You after watching the 2007 documentary,
Zeitgeist: The Movie. Of all religions, I drive to be human, says Bilal.
At the end of the day, we are all one. We need to connect with the
spiritual side of ourselves; we dont need to inflict that on others. Its
OK to have free thought. A smooth track with a soulful sound called
Little Ones is dedicated to his sons. My youngest son has Sickle

Bilal. Steve McKie (Jill Scott, Estelle, Kindred, Vivian Green)

Virginia and Los Angeles. The album also features production by Nottz

De La Soul were interrupted just before they could deliver the third volume in their AOI series -- projected to be a DJ album -- to Tommy Boy. (The label
perhaps bailed out from a 15-year relationship precisely because the group was going to release such a commercially bankrupt title, one that was planned
instead to appear on an independent label run by Maseo.) De La Soul quickly realized they couldn't go ahead with the plan after signing their AOI label to
Sanctuary, so they wrote a new record, The Grind Date. Although it may see them settling into a holding pattern, at least the pattern of 2001's AOI: Bionix
is one that any hip-hop fan won't mind hearing repeated. Better yet, it boasts productions from an excellent cast of figures -- partner in crime Supa Dave
West, author of the best tracks on their AOI series, J-Dilla, who's stretching out his patented (read: overdone) sound to embrace classic hip-hop, an only
slightly commercialized Madlib, and young phenom 9th Wonder. Madlib gets what must be the first lead single of his career, a bright, antimaterialist tale
called Shopping Bags (She Got From You) that thumps like a club tune, but lurches as only the Beat Conductor could do it. Verbal Clap finds J-Dilla
allowing some grit into his productions, and Supa Dave only continues floating the most fluidly catchy productions of any rap producer in action.
Meanwhile, De La Soul voices Posdnuos and Dave balance their time breezing easy on bumping message tracks with a few old-school shots that show
them a bit defensive about the passing of time. (Check out Come On Down, a Madlib-produced shot with Flava Flav, or Days of Our Lives featuring
Common.) Without a concept to tout, The Grind Date doesn't gel like AOI: Bionix, but it does show De La Soul keeping everything together more than 15
years after their debut. After all, you certainly wouldn't see MF Doom guesting on a Tone-Loc record. - Review By John Bush

    Modern Streets

Beat Spacek is the latest project from UK vocalist/producer Steve Spacek, a man who should really need no introduction. With boundless abilities, his work transcends genre and style - instead focusing more on swing, melody, vibe and atmosphere. From his legendary output with the band Spacek - Curvatia (2001), Vintage Hi-Tech (2003); solo work on the cult Sound In Color imprint and collaborations with the late, great J.Dilla; to his under-the-radar Black Pocket project for dBridge's Exit Records and his most recent work with Mark Pritchard as one half of Africa HiTech, his fearless approach to creation has always been progressive and highly original.

Beat Spacek sees him once again take the reigns as a solo artist creating a record that is as much a love letter to the future as it is an ode to the past. Created largely using iPhone and iPad apps, the album once again finds Steve liberated through new technologies, excited by the prospects of "the new" whilst expressing notions of the past. It's a journey through the evolution of modern Britain from a futurist perspective.

Framed against a particular period in the 1980s when Steve was growing up as a young man in New Cross, South East London, Modern Streets is rooted in the duality of the past and the future. Flim-Flams was the club where he first experienced the clash of sounds and styles that characterised South London's racial, ethnic and cultural melting pot. A spot where Punks, Soul Heads, New Romantics, Dread Locks and Skinheads all converged brought together through a love of music and new sounds.

From the paranoid, post-punk, sleng teng musings of I Wanna Know to the nu wave pop-powered love song Inflight Wave, Modern Streets is a direct reflection of that experience, envisioned through the mind of a 21st Century Rudeboy. Ghanaian Highlife is re-imagined in digital form on Tonight; Stand Firm tips its hat to the dancehall with a futuristic rinse; whilst the sub-bass powered anthem Alone in Da Sun draws on the finest elements of dubstep's sonic vocabulary and reworks them into a loose, new age club jam, brimming with soul and charisma.

The mark that the late producer J Dilla left upon hip-hop during the 90s and early-to-mid 00s is undeniable. His work with De La Soul, Busta Rhymes, The Pharcyde, and of course Slum Village long been cemented his prominence in the annals of hip-hop history.

Of the many words one can use to describe J Dilla's legacy, one that's not used enough is prolific. Dilla made beats constantly. So new Dilla compositions are still being discovered. One of the places where those works are still being unearthed is the archives of the Ne'Astra Music Group, who proudly present here 8 Dilla tracks previously unissued on vinyl.

Dilla's legacy continues to be shared and celebrated by today's hip-hop audience - with help from the tireless efforts of Ne'Astra.
