    Greatest Hit Singles

Best known for his classic Shaft soundtrack and role on South Park, Isaac Hayes has one of the deepest and impressive discographies in modern music. This singles collection focuses on his heyday, kicking off with Hot Buttered Soul-era tracks such as Walk On By and By The Time I Get To Phoenix.

One of the best-available Isaac Hayes compilation, Greatest Hit Singles bypasses a couple of his later disco hits, but the result is a more unified sound that helps illustrate why Hayes was so important to the development of '70s soul...for a more concentrated dose of Hayes at his best, Greatest Hit Singles is hard to beat. - Steve Huey, allmusic.com

    It's Christmas Time Again

It's Christmas Time Again compiles 12 entertaining, bluesy, and funky holiday songs by Isaac Hayes, the Staple Singers, Albert King, and others. Fans of the Stax catalog will note that some of these songs have appeared elsewhere, including various volumes of the massive The Complete Stax/Volt Soul Singles series. This is a solid, unified holiday album offering some hot tracks that will raise the temperature of any holiday gathering. Standout tracks include Mack Rice's Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin' and Rufus Thomas' I'll Be Your Santa Baby', both of which are adult, sexy numbers. Thanks to Stax for pulling these classics together from across disparate albums. No Christmas collection is complete without this offering.

    100. The sheer front-to-back strength of this double-LP set has made Black Moses one of Isaac Hayes' most enduringly revered and best-known works. A
watershed album for the multi-instrumental singer/songwriter and producer, it only served to further cement his reputation as a progressive soul artist

    Hits From Shaft

Three remastered hits, cut at 45 on 200-gram vinyl.

    Theme From Shaft (Side 1)
The undisputed anthem for what would be called Blaxploitation, Theme From Shaft is as popular and well-known as the movie it supported. The song opens with the ever-recognizable wah-wah, funked-up guitar chords, and we're quickly treated to Isaac Hayes' soul-drenched lyrics convincing ANYONE that this guy Shaft is one bad mothershut your mouth. The song oozes with the cool confidence that made the character Shaft one of the relative first Black film heroes.

Theme From Shaft earned Hayes his only Number One pop single in late 1971, winning an Oscar for Best Song, and helping him become the first Black composer to win an Oscar for Best Score.

    Soulsville (Side 1)
Another one of Isaac Hayes' biggest hits, Soulsville provides the contrast of a down-tempo ballad outlining the plight of life in the ghetto. It's an emotional tale of poverty, drugs, desperation and faith.

    Do Your Thing (Side 2)
Pure funk. This nearly 20-minute jam demonstrates just how potent the Stax houseband, The Bar-Kays, could be. They establish a groove in which you can comfortably loose yourself. After Theme From Shaft, this was the most popular hit from the Shaft movie soundtrack. It climbed to Number Three on the Billboard chart, a remarkable feat for such a long, mostly-instrumental song.

Analogue Productions introduced test pressings from their Stax Records reissue at the June 2003 Home Entertainment Expo in San Francisco. Among the exhibitors to show off their wares using these yet-to-be-released 45s was Richard Vandersteen of Vandersteen Audio.

    Kill Bill Vol. 1 Soundtrack

Fashion be damned: Pop culture is just one big Hometown Buffet for writer-director Quentin Tarantino. Nowhere has that sensibility been more apparent than on his hand-picked soundtrack choices, and this oft tongue-in-cheek tale of a female assassin's revenge (his first film in six years) is no exception. With dizzy, almost palpable glee, Tarantino evokes the international hall-of-mirrors influences that energize martial arts films and much of Asian pop culture in general. Thus the hip-hop of Wu Tang's RZA (who, along with composer Charles Bernstein, concocts what passes for the score's traditional cues) somehow finds itself but one ingredient in a heady souffle that includes vintage TV and film cue rarities (Al Hirt's main title from The Green Hornet, Bernard Herrmann's haunting theme from Twisted Nerve, the spaghetti western melodrama of Luis Bacalov's The Grand Duel, Isaac Hayes in full blaxploitation mode on Run Fay Run), Charlie Feathers' vintage rockabilly and a pan-kitsch sensibility that encompasses Zamfir, Nancy Sinatra's angst-in-the-pants take Bang, Bang and Santa Esmeralda's disco-era workout of Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood. Tarantino's contemporary Japan-Pop selections are no less giddy, ranging from Meiko Kaji's sultry Flower of Carnage to The 5.6.7.8's loopy Woo Hoo. It's everything we've come to expect from a Tarantino score (including dialog excerpts and a few sound fx stingers), with a madcap trip around the pop music world thrown in for good measure. -- Jerry McCulley

    Ike's Moods

Traffic Entertainment presents The Memphis Sounds Ike's Moods, an all-instrumental collection of Isaac Hayes' most well-known songs. In a similar vein as the Ultimate Breaks & Beats Instrumentals album, Ike's Moods takes the best from Isaac Hayes'
catalog and transforms them into instrumental gems. Just as Hayes defined funk and soul in the 60s and 70s, the members of The Memphis Sound have carved out their own unique contemporary sound that not only attracts a younger generation to the
genres, but also pleases fans of the sounds since their inception. Consisting of members from El Michels Affair, the Dap Kings, and Anti Balas, these instrumentalists have been a part of a movement of neo-wave funk and soul musicians, redefining the
sound through projects with Mark Ronson (his most recent album Version) and Amy Winehouse (Back to Black, as well as touring with the singer); reworking classic instrumentals for the Wu-Tang Clan on a series of 7" records and performing live
alongside the clansmen; and other various live and studio recorded projects. Ike's Moods contains such classics as "Shaft," "Walk On By," and "Look Of Love," and aptly pays homage to the many moods and musical stylings of Hayes. An innovator of his time, Isaac Hayes is most known for his work on the music for Shaft whose theme song was made famous by its wah-wah guitar and multi-layered symphonic arrangement. Passing away in August 2008, Hayes left behind a career that spanned an extensive discography, filmography, and a handful of awards including three Grammy's, an NAACP Image Award, and an Academy Award. Celebrate the career of this American music icon who defined the funk and soul genres with Ike's Moods.

    Do Your Thing

The full 33-minute, unreleased, psychedelic funk jam session by Memphis rhythm kingpins the
Bar-Kays, mixed directly from the original tapes. Contains bonus rhythm section instrumental and
booklet detailing the history of this never-before-heard version of one of Isaac Hayes' most
famous songs by Hayes historian Bill Dahl.

Hayes was already a cutting-edge funk master at Stax Records when he accepted the
unprecedented assignment of creating a soundtrack for the 1971 action flick Shaft. At a time
when R&B songs routinely timed out at three minutes and under, Hayes' albums for Stax's
Enterprise imprint had been breaking new ground since 1969. His masterpiece Hot Buttered Soul
consisted of only four tracks, two songs on The Isaac Hayes Movement clocked in at a hair under
12 minutes, and one selection on his To Be Continued stretched to 15:33.

But his epic "Do Your Thing," one of the cornerstones of the two-LP Shaft soundtrack, outdid them
all. Occupying nearly the entire last side of the set, it concluded after 19-and-a-half grooving
minutes with the overdubbed sound of a needle scratching violently across a piece of vinyl. No
one knew that jarring ending masked the existence of another 13 minutes of "Do Your Thing."
Consigned to the vaults, those improvisatory extensions-somewhere in between free-jazz and
psychedelic rock-were seemingly destined never to be heard. Until now.

    Double Dynamite

This was the second Sam & Dave album to enjoy significant crossover appeal. The 1967 record included such hits as Said I Wasn't Gonna Tell Nobody, Soothe Me, and When Something Is Wrong with My Baby. Isaac Hayes and David Porter were now rolling as songwriters, and even though the record didn't attain big pop numbers, the singles clicked with both soul and pop audiences. More importantly, Sam & Dave's teamwork and vocal interaction were establishing them as major stars.

    Carla

Paired with Stax writing whiz-kids Isaac Hayes and David Porter, Thomas had her greatest chart run, beginning with the hit B-A-B-Y and continuing with Let Me Be Good to You. Both of those appear here, alongside evocative slabs of country-soul in covers of Hank Williams's I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry and Patsy Cline's I Fall to Pieces. For good measure, Thomas also tries her hand at the blues with covers of Howlin' Wolf's Little Red Rooster and Jimmy Reed's Baby What You Want Me to Do?

    Home Sweet Home

Terry Manning is best known as an engineer and producer who spent the '60s and '70s in Memphis working for Ardent and Stax Studios on some of that city's most important records, from Isaac Hayes to Big Star. In 1970 he cut the album Home Sweet Home and it was released on the Stax subsidiary, Enterprise. Originally intended as just a vanity project, Home Sweet Home is now a highly regarded and collectible LP, praised for its innovative studio trickery and Manning's offbeat arrangements, especially on the epic opening 10-minute version of George Harrison's "Savoy Truffle." A Memphis rock classic reissued on 180g vinyl in a deluxe tip-on jacket courtesy of 4 Men With Beards.

    Sunken Condos

    Clear Vinyl!

Donald Fagen's (one half of Steely Dan),  fourth solo album for Warner Reprise, Sunken Condos, will be released on October 16. His first three solo albums, The Nightfly, Kamakiriad and Morph the Cat comprised the project known as the Nightfly Trilogy. Sunken Condos begins a new chapter in in the creative evolution of this innovative artist, whose career is still going strong after forty years.

The nine tracks on Sunken Condos were co-produced by Michael Leonhart and Donald. All but one track, an Ashkenazi recasting of Isaac Hayes' Out of the Ghetto, are new Fagen originals. Some familiar names from the Steely Dan family of players are on hand (Jon Herington, the Steely Dan horns, Freddie Washington) plus some new faces. The word is that, from now on, everything Donald does has got to be funky.

    The W

Numbered, Limited Edition On Crystal Clear Vinyl

The W is the third studio album by the world's baddest Hip Hop group Wu-Tang Clan. Released in 2000, the album debuted at number 5 on the Billboard 200, and instantly topped the R&B/Hip Hop Albums Chart after release. Containing the hit Gravel Pit, the album was certified Platinum a few months later.

After their 1997 album WU-TANG FOREVER and several solo projects, The W has a more rugged, less polished sound than most Wu-Tang related albums from that era. Group mastermind RZA produced The W with roughed up Soul samples and tight, tough beats. Paranoid kung fu samples and bizarre sounds drive the fantastic nightmare. The back-to-basics approach (the group's massive debut ENTER THE WU-TANG comes to mind) works so well because it puts the focus back on some of the best rappers in the game.

The album also features guest appearances from Isaac Hayes, Redman, Nas, Busta Rhymes and Snoop Dogg.
