I can whine about it all but I won't.
    -Samuel E. Beam

The first Iron & Wine song that I ever remember hearing was Dead Man's Will, originally featured on the Yeti 1 compilation CD. Its hushed eloquence and unadorned beauty lent it a sort of soft power*,a triumph of instinct over overstatement. That was in 2001.

In 2017, Beast Epic, Iron & Wine's fourth album of new material for Sub Pop and it's sixth overall, recasts soft power as a series of vignettes, observations and regular old songs that redeem through joy and a certain expectation of grace.

Even the instant classic, Bitter Truth, with a lyric as pained and direct as any I've heard from Iron & Wine, is leavened with background vocals recalling The Jordanaires. Sam Beam has called Beast Epic his most personal album to date. It is the first Iron &Wine album that he's produced since The Creek Drank The Cradle, though the results are vastly different. This album brims with surprise flourishes, classic touches and an appealing confidence that is evident on songs like Call It Dreaming.

After a decade and a half of prodigious expression and exploration, recording as both Iron & Wine and eponymously, Sam Beam confessed that he has finally figured out how to make records. He had me fooled all along.

Beast Epic will be available worldwide through Sub Pop Records. It's my favorite Iron & Wine album by a mile.

    - Jonathan Poneman

Iron & Wine's Beast Epic was written and produced by Sam Beam, and recorded and engineered by Tom Schick at the Loft in Chicago in July 2016 and January 2017. The musicians who played on Beast Epic include longtime Iron & Wine collaborators Robert Burger (keys),Joe Adamik (percussion), and Jim Becker (guitar, banjo, violin, mandolin), along with bassist Sebastian Steinberg (Soul Coughing and Fiona Apple), and Chicagoan Teddy Rankin Parker (cello). Beast Epic was mastered by Richard Dodd in Nashville, Tennessee.

    Woman King

Aside from the immediacy and intimacy of his recorded work, there is one thing clear about Iron & Wine's Sam Beam: he is wonderfully and seemingly effortlessly prolific. In just short of 2 years he has released 2 full-length albums and two EPs. Recorded in August 2004 with Brian Deck at his Engine Studios in Chicago, Iron & Wine's latest release, the Woman King EP, is striking both for its broadened palette (percussion, piano, violin, even electric guitar all crop up here) and its thematic focus on female characters both archetypal and personal. The latter is mostly coincidental, a larger batch of songs yielding recurrent imagery when pared down for this EP. That negotiation with the sexual other might be best summed up with a line from My Lady's House: Thank god you see me the way you do/Strange as you are to me. And, the increasingly complex beauty of Iron & Wine's albums might best be summed up by the following, from SPIN (in a review of Our Endless Numbered Days): It all works because Beam is a fearlessly accessible songwriter, framing his melancholy in concrete imagery and solid, inviting melodies. He writes with the self-confidence of a man at peace with his gauzy gufts. He sings like a father talking to a child he respects or like a husband to a wife he adores. Beam has given us his second straight masterwork: self-assured, spellbinding and richly, refreshingly adult. Here's his third.

    Garden State Soundtrack

The soundtrack to Zach Braff's Garden State is nearly as much of a piece with the film as the similarly sweet, quirky combinations of sound and vision in Wes Anderson's films and soundtracks. Garden State, however, is more modern in its outlook and more emotionally direct, with a mixtape earnestness belied by using not one but two songs from the Shins' Oh, Inverted World. New Slang is an obvious choice, as the song just seems to grow in stature as time passes, but Caring Is Creepy, Oh, Inverted World's vulnerable, ever-so-slightly unhinged opening track, is not, and adds to the personal, diary-like feel of the album. The bright poignancy of the Shins' tracks stands out even more among the low-key melancholy of songs like Coldplay's Don't Panic, Remy Zero's Fair, and Colin Hay's I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You. The inclusion of Hay's track, Bonnie Somerville's Winding Road, and the Cary Brothers' Blue Eyes shows that Garden State doesn't go for the hipster, too-cool-for-school poses that one might expect from the soundtrack of a hot indie movie, even with the inclusion of Iron & Wine's cover of the Postal Service's Such Great Heights. Still, there's something of a collegiate feel to the soundtrack, especially with the re-rediscovery of Nick Drake (One of These Things First) and Simon & Garfunkel (The Only Living Boy in New York) as well as the tentative forays into electronica and trip-hop like Zero 7's In the Waiting Line, Frou Frou's Let Go, and Thievery Corporation's Lebanese Blonde. Perhaps this collegiate feel comes from the fact that those years are often the time when many people are the most ready and willing to explore music that is new to them (but not necessarily new), but, as the success of Garden State's soundtrack shows, any time can be the right time.

    Around The Well

Collecting songs ranging from out-of-print to never-before-released, Around the Well spans Iron and Wine's earliest sessions which yielded the 2002 debut The
Creek Drank the Cradle through material recorded for 2007's The Shepherd's Dog. The triple LP Around the Well collection is broken up into two sections. The first half is an assortment of hushed home recordings, unedited and raw, and the second highlights moments captured in the confines of proper studios with the help of other musicians, friends and engineers. The album's title comes from a line in the song The Trapeze Swinger, a fan favorite which was written for and included in the movie In Good Company. Three more songs written and recorded for the film finally make their appearance here as well: Belated Promise Ring, God Made the Automobile and Homeward, These Shoes. Around the Well also brings together hard-to-find covers such as The Flaming Lips' Waitin' for a Superman and New Order's Love Vigilantes, along with one of Iron and Wine's earliest originals, Sacred Vision.

    Ghost On Ghost

Iron and Wine makes its Nonesuch Records debut with Ghost on Ghost. Ghost on Ghost is the fifth release from singer-songwriter Sam Beam, using the pen name Iron and Wine. The album was produced by Beam's longtime associate Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, Califone, Fruit Bats) and follows 2011's Kiss Each Other Clean, which debuted at #2 on the Billboard chart to critical acclaim.

Rolling Stone said of Kiss Each Other Clean that "pop music hadn't seen anything like it since the heyday of Cat Stevens," while Pitchfork said it "more closely resembles the lush, gold-toned singer songwriter records of the late 60s and early 70s-Astral Weeks, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road."

For Ghost on Ghost, Beam sought to move from what he called the "anxious tension" of his two previous records. "This record felt like a reward to myself after the way I went about making the last few," he says.

Helping achieve Beam's vision was a group of stellar musicians including Rob Burger, Steve Bernstein, Brian Blade, Curtis Fowlkes, Tony Garnier, Marika Hughes, Briggan Kraus, Maxim Moston, Tony Scherr, Doug Wieselman, Kenny Wolleson, and Anja Wood. Burger (Tin Hat Trio) has worked with Beam intermittently through the years and handled arrangements for strings and horns on Ghost on Ghost. For the album's cover, Beam, who is also a visual artist, chose an image from the series "Private Views" by noted photographer Barbara Crane.

    In the Reins

Three years ago, Iron And Wine's Sam Beam entertained the idea of recording with Calexico founding members Joey Burns and John Convertino as the backing band for what would have become his debut record. Due to unavoidable situations, that recording didn't happen. Finally, after much acclaim for both bands, recording for In The Reins took place in December of 2004. It's a collaborative affair that features seven Sam originals with the backing of the full Calexico band and vocals by Joey Burns. A truly harmonious affair with equal parts Iron and Wine and Calexico to satisfy fans of either or both. These tracks offer something new and exciting beyond what the listener has come to expect from either act.

For 31-year-old Minnesota-native Ben Weaver, the follow-up to his lauded 2008 album, The Ax in the Oak, was literally cooked up in the kitchen. Weaver was working as a prep cook in a farm-to-table restaurant in Minneapolis, where the songs on his latest album, Mirepoix and Smoke, started to take shape.

While The Ax in the Oak was more complex in its sound, the result of a collaboration between Weaver and Brian Deck (Califone, Iron and Wine, Mirepoix and Smoke is a decidedly more bucolic affair; its songs are barely accompanied by more than Weavers guitar or banjo and his voice, allowing for a more sensory experience of Weavers signature lyrical poetics. You just dont hear Mirepoix and Smoke, you smell it, taste it, feel it and see it.

As with Weavers previous two releases, Mirepoix and Smoke was recorded at Chicagos Engine Studios, and was engineered by Neil Strauch (Bonnie Prince Billy, Iron and Wine, Margot and the Nuclear So and Sos). Erica Froman, formerly of the dream-pop collective Anathallo, joined Ben on vocals and piano.

    Archive Series Volume No. 1

16 Previously Unreleased Early Home Recordings

Iron And Wine's 'Archive Series Volume No. 1' is the first in a
series - Sam Beam will be gathering otherwise unreleased
home recordings, covers, live sets, and curiosities from his
entire career as Iron And Wine and releasing them on his own
label - Black Cricket Recording Co.

This first release taps into a set of songs created before Sam
was Iron And Wine, when he was making music without the
public in mind. The songs on 'Volume No. 1' came to life at the
same time as those selected for Iron And Wine's debut album,'
The Creek Drank The Cradle' (Sub Pop, 2002, 197K Sales ToDate).
Performed and recorded at home on a 4-track cassette
    - the songs on 'Creek' were only 11 of the many crafted by
Sam prior to his debut. Some of this material has been widely
bootlegged, but has never received a wide-spread or proper
    release.

'Archive Series Volume No. 1' collects 16 of these
unreleased early home recordings for the first time.

This initial chapter in the 'Archive Series' has been digitally
transferred from the original cassettes and packaged in
gatefold artwork featuring the Bird of Paradise Quilt (licensed
from the American Folk Art Museum).

Amos Lee has completed the recording of Mission Bell, his fourth album for EMI's Blue Note Records, and his richest and most fully formed album to date. Mission Bell, which was produced by Joey Burns of the acclaimed band Calexico, displays both range and cohesion, an array of emotions unified by Lee's eclectic taste and distinctive vocals.

With a remarkable set of guests including Lucinda Williams, Willie Nelson, Sam Beam (Iron & Wine), Priscilla Ahn, Pieta Brown, and James Gadson, and the musical backing of Calexico, the album marks the arrival of Amos Lee as a mature artist who continues to explore his musical and thematic interests.

    For Emma, Forever Ago

Pronounced "bohn eevair; French for "good winter" and spelled wrong deliberately. This debut is centered around a particular aesthetic; Justin Vernon, the primary force behind Bon Iver, moved to a remote cabin in the woods of Northwestern Wisconsin at the onset of winter, alone for three months. This solitary time fed a bold, uninhibited new musical focus. All his personal trouble, lack of perspective, heartache, longing, love, loss, and guilt that had been stockpiled over the past six years was suddenly purged into song. The NY Times called this record "irresistible", and it was given a "Recommeded" rating by Pitchfork. RIYL: Iron & Wine, M. Ward, and Elliott Smith.

    Didn't He Ramble

Didn't He Ramble, the second solo outing from acclaimed singer songwriter Glen Hansard, will be released September 18 via Anti- Records. The new album is his first in over three years and follows 2012's solo debut Rhythm & Repose, which Billboard hailed as "Hansard at his most engaging." Didn't He Ramble was produced by Thomas Bartlett (The National, Sufjan Stevens), a frequent collaborator of Hansard's, and Grammy winner and former Frames band-mate David Odlum (Paloma Faith, Tinariwen). The album, which was recorded in New York, Dublin, Chicago and France, is Hansard's most intimate and elegant record since his work in Once and features guest appearances by John Sheahan (Dubliners), Sam Beam (Iron and Wine) and Sam Amidon. Glen Hansard is the celebrated principal songwriter and vocalist/guitarist for the influential Irish group The Frames. Whether busking the streets of Dublin, where he got his start, or headlining a gig, Hansard has garnered a reputation as an unparalleled frontman. Hansard is also one half of the acclaimed duo The Swell Season. In 2007, he and Czech songstress MarkÉta Irglová took home the Academy Award for Best Original Song for "Falling Slowly" off the Once soundtrack. In 2013,the Broadway adaptation, Once The Musical, won eight Tony Awards including the top musical prize. Most recently, Hansard has won critical acclaim for his moving interpretations of the songs of Jason Molina of Songs:Ohia.

    How Will You?

A collection of songs that ranges from sun-bright and poppy to deep-focused and torrential. Azita stuck to straight-ahead voicings in her chords to bring heaviness to the sound, working with bassist Matt Lux (Iron and Wine) and drummer John Herndon (Tortoise) to arrange her songs with the strength of a rock and roll band throughout the album.

    Broom

Their debut is an expertly crafted indie pop gem. Spin declared the Missouri band could succeed The Shins. Then a slew of bloggers ranked them ahead of Wilco and Iron & Wine in Leafblower's annual Top Bands Of America Today. Broom sparkles when it rocks, has hooks galore, and should make a lasting impression. Think The Shins, Pavement, Of Montreal, and Elliott Smith. One of those rare albums where every song is crafted, delicious, and essential - SF Weekly.

    Edge Of The Sun

Calexico is no stranger to negotiating borders. For
the better part of two decades, eight albums, and
countless trips around the globe, Joey Burns and
John Convertino have crossed musical barriers with
their band, embracing a multitude of diverse styles.
For Edge of the Sun, the band's keyboardist, Sergio
Mendoza, stepped up to co-write and arrange certain
songs, ultimately co-producing the album along
with Burns, Convertino, and longtime associate
Craig Schumacher: It was Mendoza who suggested
that Calexico physically cross an actual border for a
songwriting retreat to the historic Mexico City borough
    of Coyoacán.

In view of the fresh creative perspective provided
by the band's journey to New Orleans to make its
previous album, Algiers, Edge of the Sun's Mexican origins would seem destined to have a major impact
on the album. The writing here shows Burns and
Convertino's ongoing pursuit of the profound melody,
creating music at once hauntingly accessible
and rich in instrumental texture. With guests including
Sam Beam of Iron and Wine, Ben Bridwell from
Band of Horses, Nick Urata from Devotchka, Carla
Morrison, Gaby Moreno, Amparo Sanchez, multi-instrumentalists
from the Greek band Takim, as well
as Neko Case, Edge of the Sun weaves a dense tapestry
from its international roster. "Madrid, Nashville,
Tucson, El Paso, Berlin; it's an eclectic mix,"
says Burns. "This album is about pushing through
the blue to brighter days. Calexico has always had
that element of hope, going back and forth between
a positive outlook and embracing desperate or dark
themes that I think we all share."

    On The Wreath

International debut album from Tucson, Arizona based Andrew Collberg. The Swedish born guitarist and singer is truly of the most gifted songwriters since Elliot Smith and Badly Drawn Boy. On The Wreath is a stunning album somewhere in between Swedish pop like Kings of Convenience or The Cardigans and The Go-Betweens, Galaxie 500, The Kinks or Bob Dylan. Produced by Nick Luna (Iron & Wine, Calexico and Robyn Hitchcock).

    Upper Air

The follow-up to 2007's acclaimed Hymns For A Dark Horse. Upper Air moves away from the singular sound and sentiment; each song is a unique, beautiful piece. The arrangements are subtle: acoustic guitars, organ, piano, autoharp, violin, percussion, upright bass, and more are used throughout. This music has the spirit of Richard and Linda Thompson, the currency of Devendra Banhart, and the addictively sweet melodicism of Iron & Wine, but it churns with an underlying energy closer to a Beirut or something more raw, more wild.

Johanna Warren is a songwriter based Portland, Oregon. Her new album, nmn, will be released worldwide on Team Love Records May 19, 2015. In Johanna's words, "This album is dedicated to the moon: by honoring her phases, I am restoring balance to my body and making peace with the cycles of all natural things; and to the divine feminine: by collectively cultivating her, may we restore balance to our world. Although Warren has lent her vocal talents to artists like Natalie Merchant and Iron & Wine, she identifies primarily as a songwriter. An intuitively self-taught guitarist, she channels powerful songs in weird time signatures and melancholic open tunings, weaving adept finger-picking with acrobatic vocal lines and carefully crafted poetry, in reverence of her patron songwriting saints Elliott Smith, Joni Mitchell and Nick Drake. God has his plans, but I've got mine, and little good will come to those who stand in line" - Johanna Warren, Noise. Approaching music as a potent healing modality, Warren cultivates and honors the physically healing properties of sound and the spiritually healing powers of artistic expression. One cold winter evening in the waning weeks of 2014, Johanna and her touring partner Mitski (Double Double Whammy) passed through the Team Love gallery space in New Paltz, NY. Johanna invited the crowd to sit down on the gallery floor for her set. She requested the lights be dimmed as she lit a white candle and burned some sage. With only the candlelight to illuminate her face and separate her from the audience, she opened herself to a crowd that was swiftly transformed from unsure and vaguely uncomfortable to enraptured and mesmerized. These moments are the signature of Johanna's live performances, in which she consciously strives to provide listeners with a portal to an alternate realm in which healing can occur. Sound and light, scent, physical space, and the web of subtle energies created by a room full of human bodies are all elements of the universe that Johanna controls and shapes. She performs the same delicate manipulations within the world of nmn, an oceanic voyage from dark to light and back that is rich in sensual language, riveting self-reflective candor and surreal sonic landscapes (created entirely with acoustic instruments and found objects played by Johanna and her engineer Bella Blasko in an empty apartment unit). However, despite stepping into the role of High Priestess for the sake of creating art and facilitating group experiences, she warns us not to attach to any divisive illusions: You say I emanate some strange magnetic power, but don't be drawn to me-I may be here today, but soon black moss will cover over my dead body. Whether singing about her own mortality (Black Moss), updating the tedium of the party that Patti Smith first told us about (This Is Why) or daring one to imagine a world that transcends our notions of "the duality of wrong and right" (True Colors), Johanna Warren is a songwriter of daring vision. Her forthcoming album nmn flies into timeless space, focusing our gaze deep into the vastness of the heavens.
