Our Love To Admire (10th Anniversary) (Pre-Order) (On Sale)

    10 Year Anniversary Double LP

    Remastered By Gavin Lurssen

In the late 90s, Interpol emerged as one of the American indie-rock scene's most exciting and inventive new bands. The New York outfit's artfully layered sound drew comparisons to a multitude of notable post-punk combos, but Interpol's cutting-edge sound was wholly its own. That's the case with 2007's Our Love to Admire, the band's third album as well as its first major-label release and one of the group's biggest selling albums.

With the full participation of the band members, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Our Love to Admire, UMe will release a special expanded-edition reissue of this beloved classic: a double LP. The LP will debut a sparkling new edition of the original album, remastered for this release by Gavin Lurssen with all of its original packaging intact.

Interpol formed in the late 1990s and quickly established a dense, intoxicating sound featuring layers of guitar, bass and synthesizers. The band came up through the vibrant New York scene, alongside such notable contemporaries as the Strokes and the National, but gained crucial early attention in Britain, where they recorded a prestigious live session for legendary BBC DJ John Peel.

Our Love to Admire marked a critical and commercial breakthrough for the band. Recorded at New York's Electric Lady and the Magic Shop studios with producer Rich Costey (Muse, Death Cab for Cutie), the album boasts an expansive, cinematic sound that drove home such notable songs as The Heinrich Maneuver, Pioneer to the Falls, No I In Threesome, Mammoth and Rest My Chemistry.

Upon its release, Our Love to Admire debuted in the Top Five in both the U.S. and the U.K. Uncut described the album as a majestic, grandiose, machine-tooled album, subtly orchestrated with gothic pianos and doomy organs. Billboard noted that the band retains its flair for dramatic images and ominous guitar lines... with producer/mixer Rich Costey onboard, these signatures uncoil into more complex soundscapes.

In the years since its original release, Our Love to Admire has remained a cornerstone of Interpol's body of work, and continues to stand as one of the key albums of the musical era in which it was created. Now, with this distinctive 10th-anniversary edition, this modern classic shines more brightly than ever.

    Turn On The Bright Lights

Interpol's classic debut album now available on low cost vinyl.

Interpol: Carlos D., Daniel Kessler, Paul Banks, Samuel Fogarino. To make music marked distinctly of a specific period that's somehow so compelling as to be timeless is no mean feat. Interpol initially sounds as if they must have been roaming about Manchester as the 1970s screamed to a close, yet they emerged across the ocean in New York City some two decades-plus later. Combining the insistent drone of Joy Division with the dreamy melodies of the Chameleons, the fire of Mission of Burma, and an occasional jagged edge a la The Fall, the foursome inconceivably manage to defy anachronism on their debut full-length TURN ON THE BRIGHT LIGHTS. Just how they do it is indefinable, perhaps it's just a trick of the light, or the life that breathes gloomily, radiantly throughout, but it's undeniable. Vocals which fall somewhere between Ian Curtis's plaintive, edge-of-oblivion wail and the winking, laconic drawl of James's Tim Booth, ripping uncompromisingly through unpredictable, unforgettable lamentations from the reflective (NYC) to the imploring (PDA). When the darkly etched, implosive, mournful lyrics poke out as they do on the unrelenting Obstacle 1 (she puts the weights into my little heart and she gets in my room and she tears it apart), the hook is set for an important debut by a band that portends to be around a while.

    Antics

The title of Interpol's second album, ANTICS, may conjure up images of carefree adventure, but anyone familiar with the New York City band's brooding post-punk sound knows that there's nothing lighthearted about their music. Although it's not a radical departure, ANTICS does reveal a broadening of the group's sonic palette. The opening track, Next Exit, is a slowly building, piano-laden anthem, marked by singer Paul Banks's remarkably widened vocal range and strangely hopeful lyrics. Clearly the group is eager to move beyond the endless Joy Division comparisons they previously garnered, and this bid works to wonderful effect. Of course, many of the elements that made their debut, TURN ON THE BRIGHT LIGHTS, so entrancing--soaring guitar riffs, tight bass lines, frenetic drumming--are still present, particularly on Narc and Slow Hands, but even these tracks aren't merely content to repeat past glories. A solid album that improves upon its predecessor, ANTICS sees Interpol shaking off the mixed blessing of being the Next Big Thing, and hitting a new creative stride.

UK Version Of The Self-Titled Album, Newly Remastered By The Clash From Original Source Tapes To Audiophile Quality

All Artwork Recreated From Original Release Including Replicated Fully Printed Inner Sleeves

The Clash's label didn't believe this debut would sell in the United States. By the time CBS got around to releasing a stateside version of the U.K. album, the British original had become an import hit. While the U.S. release contains outstanding tracks such as Complete Control and Clash City Rockers, it's still missing Cheat, Protex Blue, 48 Hours, and Deny. No matter which version you prefer, The Clash is a fearsome listen. Joe Strummer reviles the system at every turn, while Mick Jones wields his guitar like a switchblade. Yet even on their debut there are hints of future musical adventures. Junior Murvin's Police & Thieves is solid reggae, while White Man in Hammersmith Palais expertly interpolates the reggae groove into their punk attack.

Liner Notes By Guitarist Will Sergeant

One of the most acclaimed British rockers from the 1980's, this legendary band formed in Liverpool in 1978 and were forefathers of the neopsychedelic movement. Their line-up consisted of vocalist Ian McCulloch, guitarist Will Sergeant, bass player Les Pattinson and drummer Pete de Freitas, eventually replacing the original drum machine.

The band's cult status eventually waned with mainstream success in 1983 after they scored a UK top 10 hit with "The Cutter" and attendant album Porcupine which hit #2 in the UK. 1984's album Ocean Rain is considered a landmark post-punk release, featuring the lead single "Killing Moon."

The band split in 1988 but regrouped in 1997, releasing an album in 2014 that was their first UK Top 40 entry since 1999. The band's popularity never quite made the same impact in the US as it did in Europe so they are ripe for rediscovery for anyone interested in bands such as Suede, Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Blur, Interpol and Oasis.

This brand new collection of their legendary live material recorded in Sweden in 1985 includes classic Rock-N-Roll covers of legendary tunes by the Doors, Rolling Stones, Velvet Underground, Television and more available on vinyl for the first time. Many of the tracks from Sweden were recorded live for Swedish National Radio at the Karen Club. Also included here is a legendary extended version of "Do It Clean" recorded live in concert at the Royal Albert Hall in 1983.

    El Pintor

"Indie rock's elite class" - Billboard

"The masters of emotional turbulence." - Q Magazine

'El Pintor' is Interpol's fifth and most exhilarating studio album. It's a driving, relentless record, taut and epic in equal measure.

The album, recorded as a three-piece with frontman & guitarist Paul Banks picking up the bass, kicks off with "All The Rage Back Home," signaling a return to what Interpol does best, layering pulsing bass, bursts of guitar, and driving drums beneath Banks' instantly recognizable voice.

Meanwhile, "My Desire" features a throbbing beat and insistent guitar riffs that shoot off like flares into the night, while on "Same Town, New Story" Banks crafted up an unexpected melodic context for Daniel Kessler's laser-sharp guitar lines.

In contrast with previous records, Interpol took a step back on 'El Pintor' and let the songs happen. What emerged is something urgent and compelling, something revitalized and
reenergized. The result is as accomplished and thrilling a collection as the band has ever released.

    Interpol (Awaiting Repress)

The long-awaited fourth album from New Yorks Interpol finds them exploring dark musical landscapes of layered depth and intensity. In contrast to 2007s Our Love To Admire, this self-titled opus hangs together as an album, a set of very different songs that thematically connect. From the highly melodic Barricade and Lights through the snarling Memory Serves and the extraordinary triptych of connected tracks that close the album, Interpol have never made work so emotionally resonant and packed with crescendos before. Mixer Alan Moulder has brought the rhythm section back to the fore, anchoring a thicket of orchestral sound that brings to mind touchstones from black metal to 70s art rock, but always remains identifiably Interpol. Hypnotic, bizarre, always indelible, Interpol is the bands magnum opus.

    Cherry Tree

The National's sophomore album, Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers (2003), found the band emerging onto a larger stage. Uncut called it a genuine treasure and named it an album of the year; it was hailed by Rolling Stone and the inde media; and Magnet, La Liberation (Paris) and the Chicago Tribune all tapped it for their year-end lists.

In France, the band had become such a sensation that renowned DJ Bernard Lenoir invited them to perform on his Black Sessions, following U.S. buzz bands like The Rapture and Interpol. A track from that session, Murder Me Rachael occupies the warm-blooded heart of Cherry Tree, a 7-song collection that delves the depths and brought their tension-wire rock to new heights.

Clocking in at just under 30 minutes, Cherry Tree was an EP, a mini-LP, or a bridge to the future. It features five new songs and two bonus tracks, including one of those aforementioned live performances from France inter radio and a trans-oceanic duet between the National's singer Matt Berninger and Clogs' Padma Newsome.

Vinyl edition includes download card and a third National poster which completes the triptych started on the first two vinyl National releases, the self-titled release and Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers.

They've been subject to features on key online sites such as Pitchfork and Stereogum in addition to live accolades from New York Times, amongst others. Owen - the acclaimed solo musical guise of singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Mike Kinsella - has made an astonishing leap forward with THE KING OF WHYS, the first work in his two-decade-plus career to be made entirely outside of his beloved Chicago home base. Produced by S. Carey over 18 days last winter at Justin Vernon's April Base Studios in Eau Claire, WI, the album is Owen's most inspired and evocative thus far, interpolating a group dynamic into what has long been an intensely intimate sound.

    All Harm Ends Here

The Early Day Miners Good Time Band is back with another platter of Midwest post-goth. Having already introduced their new rhythm section (Matt Griffin on drums and Jonathan Richardson on bass) to the world over the course of their last two tours, with All Harm Ends Here Early Day Miners have combined the lushness of their second album Let Us Garlands Bring with the conciseness of their last full-length Jefferson At Rest. Moreso than on any of their previous efforts, EDM take both musical and tonal cues from the principal architects of the 80's sad-as-hell dark underground - Echo & the Bunnymen, the Church, early-the Cure, and most notably the Bauhaus/Tones On Tail/Love And Rockets axis. While contemporaries like Bedhead and Interpol have mined primarily the darkest aspects of these long shadows, there lies in Early Day Miners' method an innate sense of hope that transcends even their darkest themes (decay, suicide, desertion). Perhaps this is most evident in the guitar interplay of long-time collaborators Dan Burton (Ativin) and Joseph Brumley. Arpeggios abound, the works of Roger McGuinn and The Edge come to mind in that there is a sense of hopefulness and sublimation which drives the songs to a better place. While the album is filled with death and ghosts of all sorts, its unifying theme is the individual's ability to escape the death and ghosts. Even the making of the album (which was done just outside of the band's hometown of Bloomington, Indiana, on the outskirts of Hoosier National Forest) was plagued by ghosts and phantoms. Recorded at the Old Mt. Gilead Church - recently revamped into a recording studio and still immediately surrounded on three sides by a dozen acres of 150-year old cemetery - principal tracking for All Harm Ends Here was halted for days at a time on multiple occasions when inexplicable flutter infected the reels of tape, almost requiring EDM to relocate its principal tracking altogether. Mixing and overdubbing was done at Burton's own Grotto Home Studio in an effort to evade those ghosts in the machine which possessed Old Mt. Gilead. While the Early Day Miners don't make flashy music, their layered music rewards the repeat listener. If you listen closely enough, in fact, you can hear ghosts in the distance.

    Let's Be Still

It wasn't that long ago that the members of Seattle's The Head and the Heart were busking on street corners, strumming their acoustic guitars, stomping their feet and singing in harmony as they attempted to attract the attention of passersby. After capturing that unbridled energy on the band's 2011 debut album for hometown label Sub Pop, the band went from playing open mic nights to selling out headlining shows in prestigious venues. The album became one of Sub Pop's best-selling debut releases in years. And, slowly but surely, ideas began to form for the band's second album, imbued with the experiences of traveling the world and playing to ever-growing crowds.

The Head and the Heart's new album, Let's Be Still, is a snapshot of a band that didn't exist four years ago. Virginia native Jonathan Russell and California transplant Josiah Johnson formed the core songwriting partnership, which was rounded out by drummer Tyler Williams, keyboardist Kenny Hensley, vocalist/violinist Charity Rose Thielen and bassist Chris Zasche, who'd met Russell and Johnson while tending bar at an open mic they frequented. The nascent group dove headrst into writing, recording and performing, and even moved into the same house.

After the breakaway success of their debut and countless shows on the road, the band is in a distinctly different situation. "There is a condence gained from having such an amazing fan base," says group member Jonathan Russell. "You start to trust yourself more. When we were busking, we were lling so much space to keep the listener from walking away." Says Johnson, "We wanted to write songs that felt bigger, and didn't need to be so frantic. I think for the most part we wanted to record an album that sounds like the way we play now."

Adds Russell, "Has there been an impact on our lives since we have become full-time musicians? Sure. On one hand, it's everything you have ever wanted. On the other hand, you start to miss the things you've lost and had to give up. And that's just life. My job is to write about it."

Let's Be Still was recorded at Seattle's Studio Litho with assistance from prior production collaborator Shawn Simmons, and mixed in Bridgeport, Conn., with Peter Katis, revered for his work with bands such as the National, Interpol and the Swell Season.

    The River

Ranked 253/500 On Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time

Mastered By Bob Ludwig Working Under The Supervision Of Springsteen & Engineer Toby Scott

The River is the fifth studio album, and the first double album by Bruce Springsteen.

The sources of The River go back into earlier parts of Springsteen's recording career. Independence Day, Point Blank, The Ties That Bind, Ramrod, and Sherry Darling were leftovers from his previous album, Darkness on the Edge of Town, and had been featured on the 1978 tour, as had parts of Drive All Night as a long interpolation within Backstreets. The River had premiered at the September 1979 Musicians United for Safe Energy concerts, gaining a featured spot in the subsequent documentary No Nukes.

Originally, Springsteen intended The River to be a single set entitled The Ties That Bind and released in late 1979 with 10 tracks. Springsteen added darker material after he'd written the title track. Indeed, The River became noted for its mix of the frivolous next to the solemn. This was intentional, and in contrast to Darkness, for as Springsteen said during an interview, Rock and roll has always been this joy, this certain happiness that is in its way the most beautiful thing in life. But rock is also about hardness and coldness and being alone ... I finally got to the place where I realized life had paradoxes, a lot of them, and you've got to live with them.

Featuring Mystery Of Iniquity, Oh Jerusalem And The Conquering Lion

Lauryn Hill is best known for being a member of The Fugees and for her critically acclaimed solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which won numerous awards, broke several sales records and was listed by Rolling Stone as one of the greatest albums of all time.

The acoustic MTV Unplugged No. 2.0 double album from Lauryn Hill came nearly 4 years after the first solo album and gives an insight into her deeper thoughts and emotions about her life, artist, the judicial system (in Mystery Of Iniquity) and spiritual side. Lengthy intros, conversations, and deeply personal songs like Conquering Lion accompanied with her acoustic guitar, with the audience add to the intimate performance in her typical raspy voice.

The album debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 and her song Mystery Of Iniquity was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Female Rap Solo Performance and used as an interpolation by Kanye West for his single All Falls Down. Great acoustic songs like Adam Lives In Theory, Oh Jerusalem and I Gotta Find Peace Of Mind complete the album.

MTV Unplugged No 2.0 was her last album and pressed in limited quantities. This reissue comes just in time for its 15th year anniversary in 2017.

Tales from the Realm of the Queen of Pentacles

One of music's most acclaimed singer/songwriters, Suzanne Vega, has crafted a stunning new collection of songs showcasing her trademark wit and poetic writing, which will be released this winter. Vega's first new studio album in seven years, 'Tales from the Realm of the Queen of Pentacles,' coming out on her own Amanuensis Productions on Feb. 18, 2014,features ten new songs each telling a story that has to do with the material world, the spirit world and how they intersect. "A lot of my older albums, especially the second one, was about being solitary," says Suzanne Vega. "This album has more of a sense of connectivity, there is a different spirit."

Vega spent the past few year writing and performing these new gems on the road, recording portions in Chicago, London, Prague, LA and New York City, and Kyserike Station, an old train station in upstate New York. The album was produced by noted guitarist/producer Gerry Leonard, David Bowie's musical director for over a decade and with whom Vega has worked since 2000, and features her longtime bass player Mike Visceglia and drummer Doug Yowell. Tracking for the album took place mostly at the Clubhouse Studios in Rhinebeck, and was mixed by Kevin Killen, who has worked with Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush.

'Tales from the Realm taps into Vega's broad range of musical tastes, intertwining Dylan/Stones-inspired guitar-driven songs such as "I Never Wear White" to lush orchestral strings and trumpet flourishes on "There is a Road" to soul-packed background vocals and Vega's masterful classic folk elements.

A longtime fan of hip hop as well, Vega samples the 50 Cent hit song "Candy Shop" for one of the more atmospheric tracks on the album, "Don't Uncork What You Can't Contain." This is Suzanne's first sampling effort - although her song "Tom's Diner" has been interpolated countless times in the hip-hop community, she has not sampled anyone else until this album.

For the first time on a studio recording, Suzanne has also assembled an illustrious group of musicians to accompany her including: Gail Ann Dorsey and Zachary Alford (David Bowie) on bass and drums for several tracks-a happy reunion as Suzanne and Zachary attended the same elementary school back in the 70's in New York City; bass player Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel) on "I Never Wear White" and "Don't Uncork What You Can't Contain;" drummer Jay Bellerose (T-Bone Burnett); acoustic "wizard" Larry Campbell (Bob Dylan) who plays banjo, mandolin, and cymbal throughout the album; Sterling Campbell (David Bowie, B52s) on drums for "Don't Uncork What You Can't Contain" and "Laying on of Hands;" Alison Balsom, the virtuoso principal trumpet for the London Chamber Orchestra who is featured on "Road Beyond This One (Horizon) for Vaclav Havel" and background vocals from powerhouse singer Catherine Russell, known for her work with David Bowie and Paul Simon, among others. Lastly, the strings were recorded in the Czech Republic with the Smikov Chamber Orchestra.

The Doctor Is In And Out (Pure Pleasure)

In 1976, Yusef Lateef's as restless a spiritual seeker as there ever was in the field of music, revisited some of his earliest themes in the context of modern sonic frameworks: The Eastern modal and melodic frameworks of his Prestige sides, such as Eastern Sounds, Cry!/Tender, and Other Sounds, brought to bear in much more sophisticated, complex, and grooved-out ways -- after all, it had been 20 years or more. The groove referred to is funk and soul. Funk itself was mutating at the time, so Lateef's interpolation at the crossroads of all ports in the musical journey was not only valid in 1976, but also necessary.

For this recording, he utilized an absolutely huge group of musicians, bringing them in for this or that part, or a sound, or a particular vamp. Some of those present were Kenny Barron, Ron Carter, Dom Um Romao, Al Foster, Billy Butler, Anthony Jackson, a five-piece brass section, and a synth player. Lateef, as always, was offering evocative glimpses of geographical, psychological, spiritual, and emotional terrain in his compositions, but not in predictable ways. There's the deep minor-key meditation on blues and evolving thematic variations on Hellbound that becomes a Latin funk tune; the airy, contemplative, and skeletal Mystique, which may use a repeating rhythmic phrase but explores every inch of its margins via a string section and Lateef's flute solo; the smooth, urban, bluesy funk of Mississippi Mud; the completely out electronic musique of Technological Homosapien that becomes a series of synth squeals and an erratically tumbling bassline; and the wonderfully warped mariachi variation (sung in white-boy English) that featured the band playing bluesy hard bop over an age-old recorded track on In A Little Spanish Town. It's a weird way to end a record, but then, it's a weird and wonderful

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    And Then Like Lions

Blind Pilot turns loss into inspiration on its new album 'And Then Like Lions' (ATO Records). Written and composed by Israel Nebeker over the course of three years, the record is a transcendent, cathartic response to the loss of his father and end of a 13-year relationship. Blind Pilot teamed up with producer Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, Neko Case, My Morning Jacket) and the album was mixed by Peter Katis (The National, Interpol, Kurt Vile).

    Classics

Classics remains resolutely instrumental, but the band has introduced a wealth of new sounds, from acoustic and slide guitar to sleigh bells and cello. Their vastly improved production and writing makes this record a refinement of their art. Ratatat lay squealing metal harmonies over choppy Neptunes-style dance thumps, then break into pastoral waves of keyboard tone, riding dub tempos and hip-hop struts. They're crotch-pumping arena pimps and introverted minimalists... - Blender. Stroud and Mast have come up with some catchy melodies over light, snappy bass lines in what sounds like something tailored for the headphones - Urb. The band has toured with Interpol, The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, The Stills, and Mouse On Mars.

The Yep Roc Records debut of North Carolina's Cities has just been reimagined by Ladytron, Daedelus, Fog, and Free the Robots. The remixers have tweaked the knobs to create a limited edition 4-song vinyl EP. The already danceable tracks are now dangerously seductive. Please beware. The Big Takeover called the Cities America's next great rock hope, and their homegrown roots got Jane Magazine's chest pumping, saying, It does my American heart proud... if you dig epic sounds like early-Radiohead, Interpol, and Sunny Day Real Estate, you'd best check them out. Look for this EP if you're a fan of Ladytron, Daedelus, Fog, electronic music, remix bandits, bedroom producers, and indie rock saviors.
