    In Session

In Session, recorded in 1983, is the only known recording of Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan performing together. Its long-overdue commercial release (the album didn't come out until 1999) stands as a fitting tribute to the genius of two of the greatest musicians ever to have played the blues on electric guitar.

Anyone who's witnessed a much-anticipated jam session only to be disappointed - with each participant deferring to the other, the end result being that neither ever got out of first gear will welcome this pairing of two giants of blues guitar. Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan obviously shared a mutual admiration, but it simply wasn't in either one's makeup to a) be intimidated or b) take a backseat to anyone. Not without kicking up a little dust.

This is such a precious set to any fan of either of these blues giants. In addition to the free-spirited jams, there are priceless episodes of conversation between each song, both men exchanging accolades and King giving the much younger Vaughan (though tragically it was Vaughan who died first) some sage advice. This simply is a must-have.

Superb 26 track round-up of Chelsea recordings spread over four studio sessions recorded at the Maida Vale studios in 1977-1979. Listening to these recordings, one hears the unique nature of Chelsea's sound in the English punk scene. They eschewed a biting, buzz-saw guitar attack for a less-distinct, almost plodding sound that ends up being the perfect backdrop to the vocal attack of the charismatic front man Gene October.

Livin' Blues was a Dutch blues-rock group from The Hague, the Netherlands founded in 1967. On their 1969 debut album Hell's Sessions the line-up included Ted Oberg (solo guitars), drummer Cesar Zuiderwijk (who later joined Golden Earring), Nicko Christiansen (vocals, bongo drums and guitars), John Lagrand (harmonica) and Henk Smitskamp (bass guitar and piano).

Hell's Sessions was produced by Jaap Eggermont, one of Holland's finest rock & pop producers (responsible for Venus by The Shocking Blue amongst others). Songs like Big Road Blues, Black Panther and Waitin' On You are adequate examples of the Dutch Blues movement in the early 70s.

    Super Session

This historic 1968 summit meeting features three of the era's greatest musical talents: blues guitar hero extraordinaire Mike Bloomfield, multi-talented keyboard visionary Al Kooper and Buffalo Springfield/CSNY founder and ace axeman Stephen Stills.

After achieving prominence for his work as a member of the Blues Project and Blood, Sweat & Tears, and for his role in Bob Dylan's transition to electric rock, Kooper hit upon the idea of cutting a rock album using the same approach that was the standard methof for jazz recordings: Pick a leader or two co-leaders, hire appropriate sidemen, pick some tunes, make some up and record an entire album on the fly in one or two days.

The project grew into Super Session, which combines a side of live-in-the-studio performances by Kooper and Bloomfield and a side featuring Kooper and Stephen Stills. Instrumental support was provided by bassist Harvey Brooks and keyboardist Barry Goldberg, both of the Electric Flag, and a veteran session drummer Eddie Hoh. Super Session proved to be both a commercial smash and a seminal influence, becoming the biggest-selling release of Bloomfield's career and inspiring countless other artists to attempt similar studio-jam recording projects.

Out of print on vinyl for more than two decades, Super Session has been meticulously restored for the LP reissue, using Sundazed's usual exacting standards. The album is pressed on high-quality, high definition vinyl, and features the original cover art reproduced in its entirety.

    Super Session

Super Session (1968) was conceived by Al Kooper and features the work of guitarists Mike Bloomfield and Stephen Stills. Kooper and Bloomfield had previously worked together on the sessions for the ground-breaking classic Highway 61 Revisited by Bob Dylan. For Super Session, Kooper recruited keyboardist Barry Goldberg and bassist Harvey Brooks, both members of the Electric Flag, along with well-known session drummer "Fast" Eddie Hoh.

On the second day of recording, with the tapes ready to roll, Bloomfield did not show up. Kooper hastily called upon Stephen Stills, also in the process of leaving his band Buffalo Springfield. Regrouping behind Stills, Kooper's session men cut mostly vocal tracks, including "It Takes A Lot to Laugh, It Takes A Train to Cry" from Highway 61 and a lengthy and atmospheric take of "Season of the Witch" by Donovan.

The album peaked at #12 on the Billboard 200, and has been certified a Gold record. The success of this record opened the door for the "supergroup" concept of the late 1960s and 1970s - Blind Faith, Crosby, Stills & Nash, and the like.

    Sessions

Released in 1967, Sessions is the follow-up to his classic self-titled solo album. Although the long, meandering, raga influenced songs on Sessions are a bit perplexing at first, the album's rewards increase with each subsequent listening session. Neil's vocal performances are astounding and the album as a whole is a meditative experience. An under-rated LP from one of American folk's finest voices. Studio 4 Acoustic Session

Scranton, PA indie punks Tigers Jaw have brought their talents to the studio for an intimate and rewarding experience on their new 12", Studio 4 Acoustic Session. Recorded in front of a live studio audience by Will Yip (Circa Survive, Title Fight), Ben Walsh and Brianna Collins bring listeners into an intimate space with renditions of fan favorite tracks from albums past. The record swells with melodic, acoustic versions of painful stories of heartbreak like "Hum" and "Plane vs. Tank vs. Submarine," and the hard-hitting life lessons found in "Never Saw it Coming," touching on new and old songs alike. Pensive riffs and quiet melodies teeter delicately between their raw alternative sound and their minimalist indie side. With only personal dedications,
poignant harmonies, and soft guitar by the two leads, Studio 4 Acoustic Session exposes Tigers Jaw to their fans in an unparalleled way.

    Super Session (Speakers Corner)

The musicians are aiming high with their desire for a "Super Session", for it's not something that can be planned. Only when the time, place, and audience play along, when one's lucky star is shining brightly, and the musicians have a good day, then one of music's great moments might be captured on tape. Not forgetting the recording technicians who also have to be in the mood!

In 1968 this all happened to be the case with the majority of the nine numbers on the Columbia LP: Season Of The Witch (written by Donovan) in its present version is one of them, as well as You Don't Love Me and the Dylan classic It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry. All in all, one must consider the numbers with Steve Stills as most successful in the sense of a session because here each musician inspires the others. In the super session with Kooper and Bloomfield, the guitarist stands in the limelight while the other musicians back him up.

Very often the three soloists even surpass the greatest moments of their own groups (Al Kooper's Blood, Sweat & Tears; Mike Bloomfield's Electric Flag; Steven Stills's Buffalo Springfield). In 1968 the magazine Rolling Stone judged this album to be one of the best releases of the year: an accolade which is completely justified and is still valid to this day. What better reason to get your copy of this "highly recommended" album without delay.

    Musicians:

    • Mike Bloomfield

    • Steven Stills (electric guitar)

    • Al Kooper (piano, organ, vocals, guitar, electric guitar)

    • Barry Goldberg (electric piano)

    • Harvey Brooks (bass)

    • Eddie Hoh (drums)

    Production: Al Kooper

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Cowboy Junkies recorded this spectacular LP as a live event Nov. 27, 1987 at the Church of the Holy Trinity in Toronto. It was recorded with a digital R-Dat and using only a Calrec Ambisonic Microphone. What this means is the record sounds like the band was playing right in front of you with the perfect ambiance.

Yes, this is a digital recording. True to our company principles, Analogue Productions in almost all cases reissues recordings only where the analog master tape is available. However, there are rare exceptions that whether digitally recorded or otherwise, a recording is so outstanding it's worthy of the highest quality vinyl reissue.

Featuring the sultry voice of Margo Timmins, the precise musicianship of her brothers Peter (on drums) and Michael (on guitar), and bassist Alan Anton, The Trinity Session is a spare, evocative, countrified-rock classic. First released in late 1988, The Trinity Session was named Album of the Year by The Los Angeles Times and The New York Times described it as a quiet, special record that challenges traditional music. Rolling Stone declared the album to be as important as it its inspiring.

Today, it remains much more than a snapshot of a single day's work captured on tape. So for this deluxe Analogue Productions reissue, we pulled out all the stops. Starting with new mastering from the original session digital tapes by the original recording engineer, Peter Moore. And lacquer cutting by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound. The church where the album was recorded was selected on the basis of work Moore had done there with other jazz and classical artists. Using a single Calrec Ambisonic microphone, the results are stunning.

Next, we kicked up the packaging and content several notches. You're holding a heavyweight old-style tip-on Stoughton Printing jacket, and it has brand-new liner notes by author and music editor Jason Schneider. Schneider is the author of Whispering Pines: the Northern Roots of American Music from Hank Snow to The Band. He's also the roots music editor at Exclaim! and his work has been published in Paste, The Word, The Toronto Star and other publications. The liner notes share space with additional recording session photos, inside and on the back cover. Additionally, the cover has been redesigned to remove the lettering and photo distortion originally applied and make it appear as the musicians/artist originally intended. Lastly, this sonic treasure has been pressed on 200g vinyl at Quality Record Pressings, maker of the world's finest LPs, with stampers plated by master plating technician Gary Salstrom.

The inspired reworking of both Blue Moon and Working On A Building reveal the Timmins family to be talented interpreters and insightful neo-traditionalists. Mixing the ambitious songwriting of Margo and Michael Timmins with subdued covers of Lou Reed's Sweet Jane and Hank Williams' I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry, The Trinity Session is an exquisite collection that holds up quite well under repeated listenings.

    The London Session

Less than ten months after the release of Similar Skin, Umphrey's is pleased to unveil their latest studio album straight from the world's most famous recording mecca. The stealth recording operation yielded ten tracks, from a single day, in Abbey Road's legendary Studio 2. Titanium-strength rockers fit jigsaw-like among earworm acoustic arrangements on a record that checks all the boxes.

What exactly do you do with a mere 12 hours in this iconic studio? You make the most of it. With few expectations of what the session might actually yield, a handful of tracks quickly turned into an album's worth of material. Acoustic arrangements, new versions of setlist regulars, and the first cover ever to grace a UM studio record are all infused with the spirit of Abbey Road.

Skip James estimated that he recorded 26 sides for the Paramount label in 1931, but no one has ever turned up more than the 18 songs on this LP in any form. This was the first comprehensive collection of James' early music, showcasing his piano playing as well as his skills with a guitar, and was essential listening in the 1980s. However, the collection was only partly successful on a technical level. Paramount had been notorious for using the poorest and cheapest materials in its pressings and later junked its masters. Based on surviving production 78s, the quality of this release therefore left a lot to be desired even from a historical point of view. Yazoo later upgraded and retitled the collection when better sources and transferring techniques became available (see The Complete Early Recordings of Skip James).

    The Conny Plank Session

Duke Ellington's musical works are seemingly well documented; the likelihood of finding a good, unreleased Duke Ellington recording is slight at best. When Grönland Records called and told me they had found exactly that in Conny Plank's estate and asked me if I wanted to give it a listen, I felt pretty honored, and excited. The music of Duke Ellington is - in my worldview - to jazz what Bach's oeuvre is to classical music: THE great benchmark, or - to raise it up onto an even higher pedestal - the Old Testament, the alpha and omega. With both Bach and Ellington, you can sit down at a piano simply to go through it building chords and something great always happens. This music is so rich, and it is virtually indestructible.

    BBC Session 2011 Anno Domini

One month after releasing their fourth studio album, Celestial Lineage, WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM recorded two live tracks at the BBC's Maida Vale studios. Southern Lord offers these sessions as a special vinyl release. It seems only fitting that Olympia's earthen black metal expanders, WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM, would add their name to the roster of acts who have recorded at the Maida Vale studios, the place where the sounds of contemporary and outstanding artists throughout the last century of popular music have been documented for the ages.

WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM's shadow, cast long and eerie from their campfire of the arcane, eclipses the hordes of black metal clones and drones, hewing raw nuggets of inspired music from rich seams of extreme metal and astral vibrations. "Prayer of Transformation" and "Thuja Magus Imperium" are the two tracks recorded on that day, taken from their lauded album Celestial Vintage and spanning two sides of vinyl and twenty minutes. Entitled BBC Session 2011 Anno Domini, this session is testament to the band's ability to inspire awe with homespun strands of metaphysical ambiance and painstakingly flexed sinews of metal, and is a must for all fans of the band as well as followers of contemporary metal.

    A Session With The Remains

After waxing several singles for Epic, the Remains cut this audition tape for Capitol in '66, resulting in a pounding set of covers (plus their own Why Do I Cry, for good measure), the high energy likes of which have never been duplicated.

    Sinatra's Swingin' Session (On Sale)

Mastered from the Original Master Tapes

Legend has it that when Frank Sinatra initially stepped into the recording studio for the first of four sessions, he asked Nelson Riddle to speed up the tempos to the songs that landed on Sinatra's Swingin' Session!!! It's safe to say that the arranger followed orders and that the results-buoyant, cheery, fun, exuberant, zesty, and wonderfully jazzy-speak for themselves. This 1961 effort remains the Chairman's fastest, hardest-swinging set. And oh, how it swaggers.

Mastered from the original master tapes, Mobile Fidelity's numbered limited edition 180 gram LP of this gem possesses a punchiness, immediacy, forcefulness, and dynamic heft that rivals even what's heard on a pristine original Capitol pressing-provided you can even find one. The reissue will help convert your room into a studio stuffed with horn players and percussionists, with Sinatra, decked out in a trademark fedora and suit, holding court at the center of it all. Sinatra's Swingin' Session!!! isn't a live album, but it hits with the gusto and tang of one.

Forget about incorrect rumors that state that this album was only completed due to contractual obligations and that Sinatra hurried through the material. No matter the circumstances, nothing here is tossed-off or rushed. As always, Sinatra takes it all seriously, pouring his all into each of the dozen tracks here. He wouldn't have it any other way. Name another singer from his era (or any) that could possibly keep time with these uptempo beats and sound as if he isn't even breaking a sweat. Needless to say, Sinatra has a blast making it all happen.

Riddle's arrangements help push forward the tunes, whether they be happy standards such as "When You're Smiling (The Whole World Smiles With You)," optimistic finger-snappers like "S'posin'," or the evergreen "Blue Moon," punctuated with a memorable tenor sax solo. Melodies unfurl like red ribbons on packages; grooves alternate between galloping and gallivanting; even ballads can't resist moving to joyous rhythmic patterns. Throughout, Sinatra's casual, uninhibited singing rises above the band, producing emotions that are at once frisky, lighthearted, pleasurable, and contagious. Dust off your dancing shoes.

    BBC Sessions

The transition of Deep Purple from a cult UK band that had chart success stateside, to the rock giants we all know is captured in these fascinating session recordings. Although the rarity of some of the sessions means the sound quality is often less than perfect, it is the stunning performances, many live-in studio, which shine through. This was a band who could play and who could electrify the audience and the listener.

Many Purple aficionados would dare to suggest that the session version of the classic 'Child In Time' surpasses that of the studio version. That is, of course, is subjective but why this set is so important to the Purple story, to the band's fans and any general rock fan.

    Tanger Sessions

The Tanger Sessions is based on skill and mutual understanding rather than superficial style and artifice. Recorded in Morocco and Germany in collaboration between Dissidenten and Jil Jilala, the Tanger Sessions delivers a Zeppelin-esque mixture of oriental percussion and armies of guitars, which hit places other multicultural collaborations fail to reach. Dissidenten was aiming at the world' well before the idea of World Beat floated into fashion. In the early 80s, the New York Times flagged them as leading the World Beat movement.
