Legrand Jazz (Pre-Order)Numbered Limited Edition 100% Analog 180-Gram Vinyl LP!
Limited To Only 3000 Numbered Copies!
Features Performances By John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Herbie Mann, Bill Evans & More!
In 1958, a young, successful French composer-arranger with a major infatuation on American jazz, worked his way to New York and convinced the very best players of the time to record an album of largely jazz standards. Michel Legrand would go on to win numerous prizes and accolades (3 Oscars, 5 Grammies, 2 Palmes D'or, etc.), but little of what followed matched the sheer brilliance of Legrand Jazz.
Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Ben Webster, Phil Woods and practically every other session man in town signed up for sessions with Legrand to record his idiosyncratic arrangements of standards (Django, Don't Get Around Much Anymore, Night in Tunisia, etc.). Instead of regurgitating then current bop styles, he reinvented the very nature of orchestral jazz band repertoire to make a unique and forward-looking statement on the genre.
The sound of Impex's all-analog LP preserves the wide soundstage of late 50's Columbia recordings while creating intimate spaces between players on the stage for maximum definition. This rare, highly-praised recording has never sounded as good as it does now. Go big with Legrand Jazz.
Legrand Jazz was greeted by an enthusiastic review in the magazine Down Beat. Dom Cerulli awarded it five stars out of a possible five.

Drum SuiteStrictly Limited To 2,500

"Recorded in 1956, Art Blakey's Drum Suite is a wonderful hybrid of African, Latin, and hard bop rhythms that prefigures the concept of Afro-beat by at least a decade, and the sheer energy, not to mention its very special and fresh-sounding intimacy, make it especially astounding. Even more amazing is that the three parts of the suite -- Blakey's The Sacrifice, Ray Bryant's Cubano Chant, and Oscar Pettiford's Oscalypso -- were recorded straight through live, and were only intended to be a pre-take run-through, but as is obvious here, Blakey and company nailed the whole thing right out of the box. The original LP was issued by Columbia with the drum suite on one side, and three tracks recorded by a 1956 version of the Jazz Messengers (Bill Hardman, Jackie McLean, Sam Dockery, and Spanky DeBrest) for Blakey's first Columbia album, Hard Bop, on the other side. Groundbreaking for its time, and still sounding vital, powerful, and visionary, the Drum Suite album is somewhat of a lost masterpiece that deserves a fresh audience.

In Person At The Blackhawk: Friday and SaturdayMiles Davis' two night stand at The Blackhawk in San Francisco marked a watershed in jazz history, a seminal event transforming the American musical landscape.
Davis had never been recorded live in a club with his combo and the performances over the course of two sets a night on April 21 and 22, 1961 more than justify the legend.
The New York Times, in its review of the Columbia Records release of the complete Blackhawk shows, called the music the gold standard for straight-ahead, postwar jazz rhythm.

Time Further Out: Miro ReflectionsNumbered Limited Edition!
Time Further Out continues the Dave Brubeck Quartet's exploration of unusual time signatures that began on the ensemble's definitive 1959 album Time Out. Accompanied by an all-star cast, the esteemed pianist arranging tunes according to the number of beats per bar, in the process rewriting rhythmic rules and dance steps. In fact, the tracks are ordered by the number of beats per bar, starting with It's a Raggy Waltz and Bluette in 3/4, Charles Matthew Hallelujah in 4/4, Far More Blue and Far More Drums in 5/4, Maori Blues in 6/4, Unsquare Dance in 7/4, Bru's Boogie Woogie in 8/8, and concluding with Blue Shadows in the Street in 9/8.
Like the original Time Out album, Time Further Out's cover features a work of modern art: a painting by Spanish artist Joan Miro. Mastered from the original analog tape by George Marino at Sterling Sounds in New York and pressed at RTI in Camarillo, California, this record has never sounded so alive or immediate. ELLE-IMPE-6016xArt Blakey and the Jazz Messengers
Hard BopCut from the Original Analog Mono Master Tapes by Kevin Gray and Robert Pincus & Pressed at RTI
Numbered Limited Edition of Only 2500 Copies
Some of the greatest jazz musicians of all time have passed through Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers: Horace Silver, Hank Mobley, Kenny Dorham, Wayne Shorter and Donald Byrd, among many others. However brief their stay, working with the demanding and full-throttle drummer not only increased their visibility, but also their chops and interpretive capacity. Blakey's ability to drum up the best players in the game may have even eclipsed his superhuman ability to play drums.
Altoist Jackie McLean, trumpeter Bill Hardman, bassist Spanky deBrest, and pianist Sam Dockery join the fold here to along with Blakey deliver whole-bop goodness on five propulsive, fiery tracks. True to its title, this LP bops hard, with a ferocious swing, boundless energy and telepathic communication between players - especially Blakey and Hardman. Considering the rhythmic demands of Blakey's locomotive playing style, this was an incredible achievement.
Impex Records has cut this gorgeous, limited edition (2,500 pressings) 180-gram LP with the original analog mono master tapes and without computer processing of any kind. You hear all the vivacious interplay that occurred on that weekend in 1957 when Blakey and crew forged a bold new vision of muscular, funky jazz. OK, so it's disco sound, but it's really good. Whoever says that today must have been pretty lively on their feet in the 70s and 80s and in the days of their youth they will definitely have noticed that the commercial fusion music they listened to on a Saturday night was buzzing with energy and excitement. Earth, Wind & Fire considered their amazing mix of Latin, Gospel, Soul, Funk and dynamic horn section as being of existential importance. This was the album that would either make or break the band: either they would establish themselves or they would sink into oblivion like so many other rhythm and blues acts.
The basic recipe - finely chiselled Latin beat, meaty bass grooves and sizzling funky improvisations, spiced with the sound of exotic instruments - works perfectly. Furthermore, crowned with a beautifully airy falsetto and relaxed harmonious singing, the band created a big-band sound that the magazine Rolling Stone described as »innovative yet popular, precise yet sensual, calculated yet galvanizing«. Almost two decades later, and with more than three million albums sold in the USA alone, the editorial team voted the LP into their list of the '500 Greatest Albums of All Time'. And about time too! At last today's ravers and rappers also get the opportunity to experience the great rhythms to which their daddies danced.1. Shining Star

Shostakovitch: Piano Concerto No. 2 Ravel: Piano Concerto In G MajorTo kick off the New Year in 1958, the New York Philharmonic and its music director Leonard Bernstein debuted a new piano concerto by Dimitri Shostakovich. The work, the second of his piano concertos, had been written ten months before for Shostakovitchs son, Maxim, who was 19 at the time. Bernstein, as pianist and conductor, not only performed the U.S. debut, but on January 6th he recorded the work for Columbia Records.
One of the most versatile musicians of the 20th century, Bernstein was a great interpreter of the music of that era. Greatly moved by Shostakovichs music, he was one of the Soviet composers greatest champions. The Second Piano Concerto is often referred to as a fiery and youthful work, making it a perfect fit for the mercurial Bernstein. The performance captured here has the same consuming passion we know from his famous recording of Gershwins Rhapsody In Blue. It may well be the works definitive recording.
Another work that will forever be associated with Bernstein as both pianist and conductor is Ravels Concerto in G. This jazzy and uplifting piece is a perfect playmate for the Shostakovich concerto. No one brought more to this work than Bernstein, who had been playing it with the New York Philharmonic since 1944. Like Ravel, Bernstein was greatly inspired by jazz and its clear (especially on this new LP!) that Bernstein understood the mood and syncopation of the piece like few before him.
Impex Records new LP is a stunning time-capsule for classical record production during the golden era of early stereo: minimally miked, full of natural ambience and incredibly dynamic. The Shostakovich concerto was recorded in the enormous Colorama Ballroom of the Saint George Hotel, the location where Bernstein recorded Rhapsody In Blue and Tchaikovskys Romeo And Juliet. The Ravel was recorded on April 7th, 1958 in the magical acoustics of the 30th Street studio. We know the acoustics of this room from such famous recordings as Kind Of Blue, Time Out, Highway 61 Revisited, Barbara Streisands debut album, not to mention countless other records by Bernstein, Bruno Walter, and Simon and Garfunkel. - Robert Mr. Record Pincus1. ESP marks the beginning of a revitalization for Miles Davis, as his second classic quintet -- saxophonist Wayne Shorter, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Tony Williams -- gels, establishing what would become their signature adventurous hard bop. Miles had been moving toward this direction in the two years preceding the release of ESP and he had recorded with everyone outside of Shorter prior to this record, but his addition galvanizes the group, pushing them toward music that was recognizably bop but as adventurous as jazz's avant-garde. Outwardly, this music doesn't take as many risks as Coltrane or Ornette Coleman's recordings of the mid-'60s, but by borrowing some of the same theories -- a de-emphasis of composition in favor of sheer improvisation, elastic definitions of tonality -- they created a unique sound that came to define the very sound of modern jazz. Certainly, many musicians have returned to this group for inspiration, but their recordings remain fresh, because they exist at this fine dividing line between standard bop and avant. On ESP, they tilt a bit toward conventional hard bop (something that's apparent toward the end of the record), largely because this is their first effort, but the fact is, this difference between this album and hard bop from the early '60s is remarkable. This is exploratory music, whether it's rushing by in a flurry of notes or elegantly reclining in Hancock's calm yet complex chords. The compositions are brilliantly structured as well, encouraging such free-form exploration with their elliptical yet memorable themes. This quintet may have cut more adventurous records, but ESP remains one of their very best albums.

New Photographs Of The Artist From The Three Blind Mice/Sony Music Archive
Ayako Hosokawa was the darling of Three Blind Mice Records. Her sweet and charming demeanor was perfectly matched to a honey-dripped alto and playful interpretations. She had two early-career hits for Tee Fujii's label, To Mr. Wonderful and No Tears, both popular hits for the singer. But there is a special place in many jazz-vocal-lovers' hearts for her 1993 release A Whisper of Love, a late hit for TBM and an enduring classic in East Asian countries. Working with top-notch American session players (Tee Carson, Jimmie Smith, Ray Loeckle and John Hettel) and recorded in her adopted home of San Francisco, Hosokawa has never been smoother, more comfortable than she is here.
First time ever on 180-gram LP release, A Whisper of Love, playlist was shortened and new artwork was created for the jacket's back. Red Headed Stranger (Awaiting Repress)Ranked 184/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
Following the brilliant Phases And Stages, Willie's debut for Columbia is a brilliant concept album (nearly unheard of in country music) based around the song and story of the Red Headed Stranger. Although the song had been previously recorded by Eddy Arnold, it was Willie who would take the song to a much higher level by putting together an entire cycle of songs based around the tragic story of the Red Headed Stranger. Nelson's album is a stunning mix of original and classic songs. Among the highlights are his heartfelt interpretations of Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain, Time Of The Preacher and Can I Sleep In Your Arms by the prolific songwriter Hank Cochran.
Red Headed Stranger also features Willie's Family, his band, featuring his sister Bobbie (piano), Jody Payne (guitar, mandolin), the impeccable harmonica of Mickey Raphael and the ever-flawless Billy English on drums. The sound of the new Impex 180-gram LP, cut from the original analog master tapes by George Marino at Sterling Mastering, will become the new reference for clarity, realism and, above all, duplicating the inimitable sound of Willie's incredible singing voice.1. For many classical music lovers, Beethoven's eighth
violin sonata lives in the long, fiery shadow of the ninth, better known as the "Kreutzer". This is easy to understand, as the Kreutzer is a prime example of the stormy side of Beethoven - the one many listeners see as his most exciting and revealing trait. However, just as his eighth symphony is the kinder, gentler companion to his towering, formidable ninth, the eighth violin sonata, shorter
and less aggressive than the ninth, shows a more lyrical side of Beethoven.
For this release, RCA coupled the eighth sonata with the tenth, also in G Major. One of the loveliest of Beethoven's compositions for violin, the mood of the
tenth sonata is the perfect complement to the eighth.
Although RCA would often place Heifetz alongside great pianists like Rubinstein, it was with Emanuel Bay that he found the greatest chemistry. This new Impex LP is the long-overdue 180-gram debut of the famous Heifetz/Bay team. The two sonatas were recorded on October 16 and 17, 1952 using a single microphone. These monaural masterpieces come closer to capturing the true Heifetz tone than many concerto recordings of the stereo era and Impex's all-analog production, featuring mastering by Kevin "Dr. Groove" Gray & Robert "Mr. Record" Pincus and pressing at Record Technology Inc., preserves
the incredible dynamic range of this historic session, without the unnatural EQ of the original
LP. Strictly limited to 2,000 pressings, this will surely become the next great collectable reissue
from Impex Records.1. Sonata No. 8 in G Major

Beethoven Concerto No 4So much has been said and written about Glenn Gould's Bach recordings that some classical music listeners may have overlooked his fabulous renditions of the Beethoven piano concertos. Impex is hoping to change this. Hearing Gould's magnificent pianism, along with the inspired conducting of Leonard Berstein, recorded in the vast acoustical space of the Manhattan Center, we are certain you will find Gould's Beethoven concertos have a rightful place alongside his celebrated Goldberg Variations. With so many workaday renditions of Beethoven concertos, audiophiles rightly tend to look for inspired performances; and every recording by Glen Gould is certainly inspired. Gould is often erratic, but he was also daring, constantly exploring. His lyrical ebb-and-flow reading shines a new light on this well-loved work. With all-analog mastering by Kevin Gray and Impex's usual attention to detail on all facets of production, this new 180-gram pressing will make this Gould and Bernstein triumph a favorite of audiophiles everywhere.Features:
