Original LP with four bonus tracks

Ike and Tina Turner's debut album for Sue Records, released in 1961.

Well-known for her trademark legs, throaty voice, and boundless stage energy, Tina Turner was one of the sexiest and most popular international performers of the 20th century. Ike Turner, a well established seminal figure in the early years of rock & roll as both a performer and talent scout, met her one night in St. Louis while he was performing with his Kings Of Rhythm: she just grabbed the microphone and sang a B.B. King song, impressing Ike so immediately and overwhelmingly that he asked her to perform regularly with them. The rest is history: Ike's slick managing skills and songwriting, along with Tina's intensely energetic lead voice, three back-up 'Ikettes' and a technically airtight eight-piece band produced a combination of country blues, rock and roll, ghetto rhythm and gospel passion that created a legend lasting 50 years. It's Gonna Work Out Fine, I Pity the Fool, I Idolize You, and Tra La La La La. are just some of the R&B gems included in their 1960 astonishing debut album.

    Betty Davis

One can hardly imagine the genre-busting, culture-crossing musical magic of Outkast, Prince, Erykah Badu, Rick James, The Roots, or even the early Red Hot Chili Peppers without the influence of R&B pioneer Betty Davis. Her style of raw and revelatory punk-funk defies any notions that women can't be visionaries in the worlds of rock and pop. In recent years, rappers from Ice Cube to Talib Kweli to Ludacris have rhymed over her intensely strong but sensual music.

There is one testimonial about Betty Davis that is universal: she was a woman ahead of her time. In our contemporary moment, this may not be as self-evident as it was thirty years ago - we live in an age that's been profoundly changed by flamboyant flaunting of female sexuality: from Parlet to Madonna, Lil Kim to Kelis. Yet, back in 1973 when Betty Davis first showed up in her silver go-go boots, dazzling smile and towering Afro, who could you possibly have compared her to? Marva Whitney had the voice but not the independence. Labelle wouldn't get sexy with their "Lady Marmalade" for another year while Millie Jackson wasn't "Feelin' Bitchy" until 1977. Even Tina Turner, the most obvious predecessor to Betty's fierce style wasn't completely out of Ike's shadow until later in the decade.

Ms. Davis's unique story, still sadly mostly unknown, is unlike any other in popular music. Betty wrote the song "Uptown" for the Chambers Brothers before marrying Miles Davis in the late '60s, influencing him with psychedelic rock, and introducing him to Jimi Hendrix - personally inspiring the classic album 'Bitches Brew.'

But her songwriting ability was way ahead of its time as well. Betty not only wrote every song she ever recorded and produced every album after her first, but the young woman penned the tunes that got The Commodores signed to Motown. The Detroit label soon came calling, pitching a Motown songwriting deal, which Betty turned down. Motown wanted to own everything. Heading to the UK, Marc Bolan of T. Rex urged the creative dynamo to start writing for herself. A common thread throughout Betty's career would be her unbending Do-It-Yourself ethic, which made her quickly turn down anyone who didn't fit with the vision. She would eventually say no to Eric Clapton as her album producer, seeing him as too banal.

In 1973, Davis would finally kick off her cosmic career with an amazingly progressive hard funk and sweet soul self-titled debut. Davis showcased her fiercely unique talent and features such gems as "If I'm In Luck I Might Get Picked Up" and "Game Is My Middle Name." The album Betty Davis was recorded with Sly & The Family Stone's rhythm section, sharply produced by Sly Stone drummer Greg Errico, and featured backing vocals from Sylvester and the Pointer Sisters.

    Feel Good (Pure Pleasure)

Feel Good, not Curtis Mayfield's Superfly, is the sound of early-'70s pimping - even when the tempo slows down, which happens rarely, it's for a slow blues grind, not a ballad, and songs like Tina's Kay Got Laid (Joe Got Paid) make no apologies for mythologizing pimps. This results in a supremely sleazy, utterly addictive record, one that's relentless in its rhythms and fearless in its funk as Ike lays down nasty rock & roll guitar - check his solos on Feel Good, where he's as elastic as rubber - and Tina tears it up with pure, unbridled passion. Feel Good is quintessentially '70s - the fuzztoned funk practically conjures up platform shoes and mile-wide collars - but it doesn't belong to any one sound, it casually draws from Southern soul, James Brown funk, black pride, Superfly style and juke joint R&B, a sound that is uniquely identified with Ike & Tina. And while this contains no flat-out classics like Nutbush City Limits or Proud Mary as an album Feel Good undoubtedly ranks among their very best: it's a non-stop party.

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    The Manfred Mann Album

Manfred Mann's 1964 U.S. debut The Manfred Mann Album is widely regarded as one of the greatest albums of the British Invasion, and it's easy to hear why. With the catchy smash single Do Wah Diddy Diddy alongside powerful readings of classics by Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and Ike and Tina Turner, it's a transcendent meeting of pop infectiousness and R&B grit that sets the stage for the musical achievements that the band would soon begin to rack up.

    The Best Of Crow

Pure Rock N' Roll From The Midwest On 180 Gram Vinyl!

With a lowdown bass lick, uptown R&B horns and surging organ punctuating a catchy chorus, "Evil Woman (Don't Play Your Games With Me)" hit the Top 20 like a comet in 1969 and propelled Crow from Midwest club band into national touring act overnight. Thanks in part to covers by Black Sabbath and Ike and Tina Turner, it's one of the most recognizable hits of the era and, inexplicably, one of the few to not make the transition into the digital age. Until now.

Out of print for four decades, Crow's finest recordings are now available again on CD and 180-gram vinyl editions meticulously mastered from the original tapes. Long-suffering Crow fans can at last savor the best of the band's gritty run from 1969-1971, including not only "Evil Woman," but their other charting singles "Cottage Cheese," "Slow Down" and "(Don't Try to Lay No Boogie Woogie on the) King of Rock & Roll" -- not to mention deep album cuts like "Keeps Me Running." Both formats also feature a previously unreleased demo cover of the Beatles' "When I Get Home," and the CD edition adds a previously unreleased long version of "Cottage Cheese." Each edition comes fully equipped with memorabilia, photos and detailed liners by Doug Sheppard of Ugly Things magazine.

    Stompin' Ground (Pre-Order)

Over the course of his career, Tommy Castro has always been inspired by the sounds he absorbed while coming of age on the rough and tumble side of San Jose, California. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, this was Tommy's home turf-his stomping ground. It was a place where the street-tough Mexican Americans and the counterculture hippies came together to drink, smoke, laugh, party and listen to tunes-the hippies with their blues and rock, the Mexicans with their soul music. Mixing the blues-rock he loved and the soul music he heard blasting out from the lowriders cruising the streets, along with the socially conscious message songs of the day, Tommy's own sound was born.

Almost every major rock and soul act, from Ike & Tina Turner to Janis Joplin to Elvin Bishop and Taj Mahal toured through the area, and Tommy was at almost every show. He saw John Lee Hooker, Albert King, and Buddy Guy & Junior Wells at the same local blues bar, JJ's, where he often jammed, honing his chops and dreaming of one day busting out. Tommy Castro has long since gone from that local bar to stages around the world, but his San Jose DNA still infuses his music to this day. You can hear it in every note of Stompin' Ground.

    From Hell To Texas (Pre-Order)

Nashville Pussy came together in 1996. Albums such as Let Them Eat Pussy (1998), High As Hell (2000) or Say Something Nasty (2002) have caused an international stir, and their 1999 single release ´Fried Chicken And Coffee` earned the band a Grammy nomination in the category ´Best Metal Performance`. We were tired of seeing and hearing bands that were just going through rock 101 motions, all slick but with no real soul. So we decided to play the kind of music that we would like to hear, comments Ruyter Suys on the birth of her band. A renowned American music magazine rightly referred to Nashville Pussy as One of the hardest working bands in show biz today.

Following the release of their previous album in September of 2005, Get Some, complete with a cover version of Ike & Tina Turner's 'Nutbush City Limits', the band set out on an extensive tour, determined to document impressively what their audience had come to expect under the heading of 'kick ass live show' (captured on the new DVD Live in Hollywood), and this is precisely what the band's European fans can look forward to in the beginning of 2012. Cartwright: We tour Europe for three weeks starting end of January and expect as always: kick ass rock n' roll based on our re-release of 2009s From Hell To Texas.
