Idlewild South (Awaiting Repress) (On Sale)

Idlewild South, the sophomore release from America's sovereign Southern rock band the Allman Brothers, is easily their greatest studio album. Unlike the band's labyrinthine live shows, which are distinguished by their immense, walloping swamp rock, this album focuses on the considerable songwriting capabilities of Gregg Allman and Dicky Betts. Plus, it showcases the bands original lineup, before multiple tragedies began taking their toll: The lightning slide guitar of Duane Allman, the vocals and Hammond B-3 of his brother Greg Allman, lead guitarist Dickey Betts, bassist Berry Oakley, and the thunderous drum tandem of Butch Trucks and Jaimoe Johanson. This album lays bare their talent for weaving disparate but distinctly Southern elements of rock, gospel, soul, jazz, and R&B into a cohesive and original whole. The legendary Engineer/Producer Tom Dowd oversaw these sessions, which resulted in the Bible-thumping Revival, the smash hit Midnight Rider, the dirty blues of Don't Keep Me Wonderin', the soul-soothing Please Call Home, and the legendary In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, which would go on to become the penultimate Allman Brothers' concert war-horse.

    Idlewild

Everything But The Girl was an English musical duo, formed in Hull in 1982, consisting of lead singer and occasional guitarist Tracey Thorn and guitarist, keyboardist, and singer Ben Watt.

Originating at the turn of the 1980s as a leader of the lite-jazz movement, Everything But The Girl became an unlikely success story more than a decade later, emerging at the vanguard of the fusion between Pop and Electronica.

Idlewild (1988), their most accessible recording, consists of eleven intimate songs. The setting is perfect for such moving compositions as Love Is Here Where I Live and Apron Strings. The album spawned the single I Don't Want to Talk About It, a poignant cover of a song by the late Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten which became EBTG's biggest hit to date, landing at the number three spot on the British charts. Start here, then go on to the rest of this remarkable group's catalog.

    Idlewild: A Compilation (Awaiting Repress)

While Idlewild is neither a best of nor a "rarities" set, it is an ultra-vivid illustration of the band's prodigious output and singular musical vision. From the spare, folkie chug of Words Are Like, which originally appeared as part of TMBG's internet-only collaboration with eMusic back in the dot.com era glory days of 2001, to the propulsive, dance floor groove of You're On Fire from 2013's Nanobots release, the scope of Idlewild is as wide as it is beguiling.

    Nanobots

Over the years, They Might Be Giants have switched between music for kids and music for grown-ups, and for their latest album, the band will be gearing their poppy alt-rock tunes towards adults. The collection is called Nanobots, and it was produced by frequent collaborator Patrick Dillett (David Byrne, Mary J. Blige) at his private studio. While this music isn't kid-oriented, it looks to be filled with no shortage of youthful exuberance. According to a press release, the album contains charming wit, electrifying pop melodies and just enough bass clarinet.

Certainly, the single Call You Mom could almost pass for a children's song with its garage pop riffs and slightly goofy lyrics. If you've got any kids who enjoy They Might Be Giants, they might well get a kick out of this one. This is the band's first album since 2011's Join Us.

    Glean

Glean is the upcoming seventeenth studio album by They Might Be Giants. It includes songs direct from the first weeks of their Dial-A-Song service. The range of these recordings is truly staggering. From the manic violin-driven ''Music Jail, Pt. 1 & 2'' to the bluesy grinding of ''Underwater Woman,'' Glean comprises some of They Might Be Giants' most vital work of their 30+ year career. With the album, TMBG's sound is in equal turns as rocking, surprising, effervescent, and truly original as they have ever been. The highly anticipated album is produced with long-time collaborator Pat Dillett (St. Vincent, Mike Doughty, Donald Fagen, Mary J. Blige, David Byrne, etc), and comes hot on the heels of 2013 s wildly popular Nanobots.

    Why?

At last! TMBG is returning to the world of kids stuff! You might have heard some of the tracks previewed on Dial-A-Song, but we can now confirm the arrival of a fantastic set of 18 new songs called Why? What kind of album is Why? Well, it's not bad for you but it's not good for you either. It's just about fun, like TMBG's first kids album No! Why? is memorable songs in family-friendly package with none of that pandering aftertaste.

Like previous TMBG kid productions it's a family affair with John Flansburgh's wife Robin "Goldie" Goldwasser singing a couple of tracks, while bassist Danny Weinkauf, joined by his daughter, steps up to the mic for the song Elephants. Alison Cowles, the daughter longtime video animation collaborator David Cowles (The Mesopotamians, We Live in a Dump, Science is Real) has contributed all the illustrations for the album. Right out of the gate TMBG hits the listener with the odd brilliance of "Oh You Did" through the folkie charm of "Out of A Tree," the full rocking of "Or So I Have Read" the perky "I Just Want to Dance," and wrapping things up with the optimism of "Then The Kids Took Over." Why? has everything to delight both kids and parents.

The Allman Brothers Band's comeback album, and their best blues-based outing since Idlewild South that restored a lot of their reputation. With Tom Dowd running the session, and the group free to make the music they wanted to, they ended up producing this bold, rock-hard album, made up mostly of songs by Dickey Betts (with contributions by new keyboardman Johnny Neel and lead guitarist Warren Haynes), almost every one of them a winner. Apart from the rippling opening number, Good Clean Fun, which he co-authored, Gregg Allman's contribution is limited to singing and the organ, but the band seem more confident than ever, ripping through numbers like Low Down Dirty Mean, Shine It On, and Let Me Ride like they were inventing blues-rock here, and the Ornette Coleman-inspired True Gravity is their best instrumental since Jessica.

The Allman Brothers Band's best studio album since Brothers and Sisters is a loud, brash, hard-rocking collection of consistently solid if not first-rate songs. The singing is some of the best since Idlewild South... -Bruce Eder (All Music Guide)

    Let's Get Metaphysical

Described by the NME as sounding like 'Weezer being beaten up by The Dillinger Escape Plan', Carnivores draw influence from Fugazi, At The Drive-In, Idlewild, Helmet, Elvis Costello and Nirvana. Carnivores are a three-piece rock band based in Paisley, Scotland. Formed in the late 2000's they got to work the old fashioned way, touring the toilet venues of Scotland in a battered estate car building a fan-base show by show. They quickly gained a reputation as one of the craziest live bands in Scotland. Carnivores are: Kenny Leckie (vocals / guitar), Grant M (bass/vocals) and Martin Johnston (drums/backing vocals). Their debut album 'Let's Get Metaphysical'. Recorded live in just six days with producer Bruce Rintoul (Twin Atlantic/Fatherson), the album captures the raw intensity of the band's live show matched with a more melodic, introspective aspect to Carnivores sound.
