(I Can't Get No) Stevie Jackson

Despite having been responsible for some of Belle and Sebastian's best known songs (Jonathan David, Chickfactor, Seymour Stein and I'm Not Living In the Real World), it has taken Stevie Jackson sixteen years for his first collection of solo recordings.

Recorded over the last three years in Glasgow and Vancouver, (I Can't Get No) features a range of friends and musical collaborators including members of Belle and Sebastian, The Pastels, Trembling Bells and the songwriting triumvirate, The Company (Jackson, Roy Moller and Gary Thom), and the New Pornographers' rhythm section of Kurt Dahle and John Collins.

Deluxe edition LP is pressed on heavyweight vinyl and is housed in a gatefold sleeve with download code. Released on Belle & Sebastian's Banchory record label.

    I Love You, Honeybear

I Love You, Honeybear was recorded intermittently from 2013 to 2014 in Echo Park, Los Angeles and produced with Jonathan Wilson, whom I also recorded and produced 2012's Fairly Fun with. There's a case to be made that it sounds and acts a bit like solo-era John Lennon, Scott Walker, Randy Newman, Harry Nilsson, and Dory Previn, while taking more than a few cues from Woody Allen, Kurt Vonnegut, Alejandro Jodorowsky and Muhammad Ali. Blammo.

It has a decidedly more soulful presence than Fear Fun, due in no small part to the fact that I am truly singing my ass off all over this motherfucker. The album is really characterized by the scope and ambition of the arrangements. Nearly every tune is augmented by something special, be it orchestral strings, a mariachi band, questionable electronic drum solos, ragtime jazz combos, soul singers, or what have you. I'm pretty sure there's a sitar in there somewhere. Blammo. My ambition, aside from making an indulgent, soulful, and epic sound worthy of the subject matter, was to address the sensuality of fear, the terrifying force of love,
the unutterable pleasures of true intimacy, and the destruction of emotional and intellectual prisons in my own voice. Blammo.

This material demanded a new way of being made, and it took a lot of time before the process revealed itself. The massive, deranged shmaltz I heard in my head, and knew had to be the sound of this record, originated a few years ago while Emma and I were hallucinating in Joshua Tree; the same week I wrote the title track. I chased that sound for the entire year and half we were recording. The means by which it was achieved bore a striking resemblance to the travails, abandon and transformation of loving someone. There: I said it. Blammo.

    I Am All Your Own

Ilyas' music is in service to dream investigation, at once still and impermanent as an August cloud and then sweeping like a strange breeze through your thoughts. I Am All Your Own will wrap you in serenity but is aware that any second now you may escape. Music of a sweet morning, and unforgettable." - Thurston Moore, London

Ilyas Ahmeds songs exist in a sublime moment of suspended animation, calmly dwelling in between modes of music making both timeless and contemporary - deeply imbued with stillness and peace. On I Am All Your Own, his first album in three years, Ahmed employs strategies gleaned from experimental and ambient musicians, such as Lawrence English and Fripp & Eno, and applies them to song-based guitar music. Building slowly and purposefully, each individual track adds to the albums overall, scrupulously-forged contour. His most direct work, Ahmed's voice is brought to the fore and unobscured. Like the best work of his friend and collaborator Liz Harris (Grouper), as well as classic touchstones such as the Velvet Undergrounds self-titled third album and David Crosbys "If I Could Only Remember My Name," Ahmed's latest is sentimental and emotive, while remaining hushed and understated. I Am All Your Own is a record for late nights and early mornings, those times spent in solitude and reflection.

Written and recorded entirely on 12-string and electric guitars, I Am All Your Own was recorded using a 4-track cassette recorder with few overdubs and mixed to ¼ inch tape, exuding intimacy and homespun atmosphere. An impressive balance lies between the lush atmospherics he conjures and the sparse arrangements of the songs themselves. As the LP unfolds, a narrative also begins to take shape: the protagonists begin their day peacefully after a long night, they come to a realization that the events of the previous night will change their life forever, and eventually dissolve into a states of regret and eventually acceptance. The guitar-based tracks are interspersed with two untitled interludes of heavy drone and celestial drift - a reminder of Ahmeds days as a key, and prolific, figure in the international experimental underground of the past decade. However, even these emanate a clarity that is new to Ahmeds work, and which makes I Am All Your Own seem like the opening of a new chapter of his career.

Born in Pakistan, Ahmed moved to America at a young age and wandered throughout his teenage years, eventually settling in his current home of Portland, OR. The songs on I Am All Your Own were thoroughly tested in front of live audiences in the Pacific Northwest and at the venerable Hopscotch Festival in North Carolina before being laid to tape in Portland, then mixed at Old Standard Sound. Concurrently with writing and recording I Am All Your Own, Ahmed has been working with Jonathan Seilaff and Matt Carlson of Golden Retriever on a new project called Dreamboat. Ahmed will tour extensively behind I Am All Your Own, a rare treat indeed.

    Fanfare

Jonathan Wilson returns in 2013 with Fanfare, an epic, grandiose and highly ambitious production that builds upon the success of his Bella Union debut.

With 2011's critically-lauded Gentle Spirit, audiences worldwide were introduced to the prodigious talents of singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer and unrivalled guitar hero Jonathan Wilson. Gentle Spirit's authentic exploration and modern updating of the Laurel Canyon sound earned it high marks on many year-end lists, including those of MOJO (#4), Uncut (#16) and The Guardian (#28). The eagerly-awaited follow-up, Fanfare, is an even more ambitious production that instantly conjures thoughts of Dennis Wilson's Pacific Ocean Blue.

'Fanfare as a word represents a fanciful showing, a bodacious movement of energy, a celebration of sound, Wilson explains. Something to signify an arrival, a special occasion. In this case, it's also the immense opening song that builds into a multilayered cinematic poem from the artist to channel the perfect love song through his piano. As a declaration of intent, it's a powerful statement.

From the initial idea of the record, I knew I wanted a concert Steinway piano to be the centerpiece--the beating heart--of Fanfare. I was going for this sort of widescreen sound. I wanted strings, horns, vibes, voices, solos, improvisation and a full orchestra on some of the tunes. Having that 9-foot Steinway was central to achieving the sound that I wanted.

Fanfare was made in Los Angeles over a 9-month period. Featuring vocal and instrumental contributions from heavy friends like Graham Nash, David Crosby, Jackson Browne, Josh Tillman (aka Father John Misty), Wilco's Patrick Sansone, Dawes' Taylor Goldsmith and Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench from Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, the album is a celebration of friends and family. Additionally, Wilson and British folk legend Roy Harper co-wrote several songs on the record.

Sometimes Wilson seems to need a pinch to believe his good fortune: There are an awful lot of wizards on this album. Wizards of all ages and life experiences. All these amazing voices and musicians. There is a high degree of musical prowess and pedigree here. Cross-generational musical sharing and passing down traditions is very important to me and something that must continue. This is the way you keep the Fanfare's blowing, this is how you keep the energies interacting.

    Beautiful Songs

Fire Records brings you a vinyl featuring over 100 of the best songs spanning the career of the legendary Jad Fair and his band Half Japanese. This comprehensive 'Best Of' compilation also includes liner notes written by Everett True.

Jad Fair is the godfather of minimalist monster art rock - a gentleman and a beast. Edwin Pouncey, The Wire.

Fitting, as this album includes every type of song that Jad has ever dreamed, other than the 'Monster songs and love songs', I do have other songs that aren't monster songs or love songs explains Jad, but for the most part they are monster songs.. I wanted to have something from each of the albums - so it's not like a dozen songs from one album, and 10 from another. It's supposed to be an overview of everything I've done. So this selection of songs pretty much fits that bill. Everett True tells us I love him for his boundless enthusiasm and shy genius...maybe it's wrong to call Jad naive because he knows what he's doing, but he has a child-like wonderment that to me is at the core of most great music I can name. The Shaggs, Leadbelly, Jonathan Richman. He makes my feet want to move, and there's no higher compliment, I've seen Jad play concerts with a rolled-up newspaper and upturned wastebasket for rhythm, with just his voice for colour. I've also seen Jad play stadiums in precisely the same fashion - with a band behind him, sure, but with the spirit intact - in front of crowds of over 15,000, in support to Nirvana on their fi¬nal tour.

A legendary roster of Grammy Award® winners. A visionary director and Tony Award®-winning design team. One of the world's most beloved and unforgettable characters. Turn them all loose on Broadway and what do you get? SpongeBob SquarePants, the new Broadway musical.

SpongeBob SquarePants is a one-of-a-kind Broadway musical with original songs written by Yolanda Adams, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of AEROSMITH, Sara Bareilles, Jonathan Coulton, Alexander Ebert of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, The Flaming Lips, John Legend, Lady Antebellum, Cyndi Lauper, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T's, They Might Be Giants, T. I., and a song by David Bowie. With additional lyrics by Jonathan Coulton and an additional song by Tom Kenny and Andy Paley.

Stakes are higher than ever before as SpongeBob and all of Bikini Bottom face the total annihilation of their undersea world. Chaos erupts. Lives hang in the balance. And just when all hope seem lost, a most unexpected hero rises up and takes center stage.

Acclaimed Steppenwolf director Tina Landau and the groundbreaking designers behind Fun Home, Hedwig and Spring Awakening have brilliantly reimagined Bikini Bottom for the Broadway stage, bringing the spirit of SpongeBob to life with humanity, heart and pure theatricality. With an original score from some of the biggest names in pop and rock, SpongeBob SquarePants explodes with energy. The production is conceived and directed by Tina Landau with a book by Kyle Jarrow, and orchestrations, arrangements and music supervision by Tom Kitt.

Grade: A+. As good as this record has ever sounded. Liquidly beautiful string and wind tone, very deep and powerful bass (although the orchestra occasionally overloads the mics or mic preamps, as it does on the original RCA pressings), sensational dynamics on both the Ravel Rapsodie and the Rachmaninoff Isle of the Dead (with some of the lifelike ease you usually only hear on reel-to-reel tape), and astonishing preservation of inner detail (some of which I haven't heard before this clearly on vinyl or digital). - Jonathan Valin, The Absolute Sound.com, June 11, 2013

Yet another giant of the Living Stereo series. The Isle Of The Dead is a truly awesome orchestral spectacular with dynamic peaks that will stun most listeners. Also included is the equally stirring version of Rhapsodie Espagnole.

    Mama Earth (Pre-Order)

The all-star Mama Earth lineup of Joss Stone (vocals), Nitin Sawhney (guitar), Jonathan Joseph (drums), Étienne M'BappÉ (bass/guitar) and Jonathan Shorten (keyboards) will release their debut EP Mama Earth via Mascot/Provogue.

The project started when British soul singer Joss Stone and her former musical director Jonathan Joseph hit on the Mama Earth concept of an album driven by the dynamic rhythms of Africa. A band was assembled from all corners of the music world. Jonathan's compadre Étienne M'BappÉ, the dazzling Cameroon-born multi-instrumentalist whose rÉsumÉ spans from John McLaughlin to Robben Ford; Jonathan Shorten, who had produced much of Stone's studio catalogue between penning some of the biggest hits for acts including Gabrielle and (again) Joss Stone. Finally, there was Nitin Sawhney: the genre-slipping wildcard and one-man musical tidal wave whose collaborations take in Sting, Paul McCartney, and the London Symphony Orchestra.

The 5 musicians convened at Stone's house, where the musical squad didn't take long to feel each other out. Music was spontaneously written on the spot, without any preparation. In the meantime, Stone purposefully kept her own creative process separate from the four musicians. I left them to do their own thing with the music in the studio, she reflects, while I was cooking dinner in the kitchen. I deliberately didn't have any input in the music, because I didn't want to affect it - or it'd all come out hip-hop and R&B! Then they'd come across into the house, give me the track and I'd sit in the kitchen writing lyrics and melodies with my mum. So it was, like, 'You guys do you, and I'll do me - then we'll put it together'. And that's the way it worked. I also went down to the river on my own with a pen and paper and write in the grass by the river. Which was a good way to do it, actually, The whole project is about Mother Nature. It's supposed to be from her perspective.

Just ten days after they came together - and following a powerful co-production from all five band members - the Mama Earth sessions were over. And yet, you sense that the story of this fascinating band is only just beginning. Impulsive, dynamic and sometimes downright dangerous, this is an album unlike anything else in the five musicians' respective CVs, unprecedented in the clinical modern music scene - and sure to make waves upon its release. I guess this album is essentially how I think of music, considers Sawhney. It was all about being open to the moment. I think that's really what I loved about this project. To me, Mama Earth is what music should be about, really...

Twin Forks are Chris Carrabba (Dashboard Confessional) Suzie Zeldin (The Narrative), Ben Homola (Bad Books), and Jonathan Clark. The band new
band was formed to play a one off festival, but worked so well that they decided to keep playing together. They put together an EP that they gave away
digitally to fans, and released a proper EP in September 2013. They have been touring the world since the formation of the band, and are working
towards the release of their first full length record in 2014.

"I use my gut, and my gut don't lie to me" is more than just a lyric in Twin Forks' exuberant "Something We Just Know," it is a kind of mission statement for
the quartet. If you've ever been to a musical performance that made you lose all sense of time and place and give in to the cathartic feeling of clapping
and dancing and singing along, you've already visited the sweet spot where Twin Forks have made it their mission to reside. "Whatever makes the
audience stomp their feet and sing at the top of their lungs, that's what I want to be doing," says singer/guitarist Chris Carrabba. "I want to be generating
that spirit from the stage. And there's gotta be a way to do that whether the audience knows the songs yet or not." Carrabba, mandolin player Suzie
Zeldin, bassist Jonathan Clark and drummer Ben Homola are already well on their way, rousing crowds with their electrifying chemistry and anthemic folkrock.

    Dear Youth

Los Angeles hardcore band The Ghost Inside will release their fourth album Dear Youth on Epitaph Records. The album was co-produced by Jeremy McKinnon and Andrew Wade.

Front man Jonathan Vigil explains the album concept in a letter written to his younger self:

    Dear Youth,

I'm writing to you now because it seems I've lost my way. I can't pinpoint exactly when it started, but I know that it's not like it was before. I've realized the more time that passes, the more we lose touch. It's starting to feel like all I ever do now is lose touch with things. But not you, I never wanted to lose you.

I wish I had something to blame it all on, but I don't. One day I was there and the next I was here. As if I was dreaming and suddenly woken up. These days I'm always wondering if what I've done is enough. It's getting harder and harder for me to shake this feeling of stagnance.

So old friend I'm writing to ask you what it feels like to have the whole world in your hand? Where we could set out and do anything that we imagined. Endless possibilities way before complacence set in. To be honest with you, I've forgotten what that all feels like. There was a wonder about us that has long since faded. That sense of excitement, I miss it.

Dear youth, will you show me again? I need to be reminded of those times, back before this began...

    North Hills

As you begin to listen to Dawes' debut album and especially songs like the bittersweet That Western Skyline and the patient Love Is All I Am, you start to realize that this band isn't interested in the bells and whistles. The Los Angeles quartet, Taylor Goldsmith (vocals, guitar), Griffin Goldsmith (drums, vocals), Wylie Gelber (bass) and Tay Strathairn (piano, vocals) seem to get all their musicianship and expression across through the inherent nature of the instruments. They seem to have their utmost respect for the song itself, only stepping out when a song calls for it, relying on the other to keep the holes filled and the ship sailing smoothly, letting the music reflect their own personal relationships to the listener.

Recorded live to tape (all analog) at Canyonsound Studio in Laurel Canyon, CA. Produced by Jonathan Wilson (Elvis Costello, Johnathan Rice, Jenny Lewis) and mastered by Rob Fraboni (Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton) at Effortless Mastering in Weston, CT.

    The Modern Lovers

Limited 1000 Numbered Copies On White Vinyl

This is the eponymous debut studio album by the American Rock band the Modern Lovers, originally released in 1976. Six tracks (Roadrunner, Astral Plane, Old World, Pablo Picasso, She Cracked and Someone I Care About) were produced by John Cale.

The Modern Lovers were formed in 1970 by teenage singer, songwriter, guitarist Jonathan Richman, augmented with Jerry Harrison (keyboards), Ernie Brooks (bass) and David Robinson (drums), with Richman's friend and original band member John Felice joining them occasionally.

The Modern Lovers influenced numerous aspiring punk rock musicians on both sides of the Atlantic, including the Sex Pistols, whose early cover of Roadrunner was placed on The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle. The album was included in Robert Dimery's 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. In 2003, the album was listed on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

    Upside Down Mountain

Though only 34, Conor Oberst has been a recording artist for more than two decades, starting with raw, acoustic guitar-based bedroom tracks he cut as a young teenager and initially released on cassette. After his early Omaha-based band Commander Venus broke up, Oberst recast himself as Bright Eyes, an umbrella name for Oberst, producer-keyboardist Mike Mogis and multi-instrumentalist/arranger Nathaniel Wolcott, and a shifting group of collaborators. By the time he released Lifted or The Story is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground on Saddle Creek, the label he helped found with friends in Omaha, Oberst was a word-of-mouth success, with an avid young audience that helped to sell out his tours. The critics soon followed. Rolling Stone called him "a true American original: the ghost of Walt Whitman setting up shop in the wraith-white, rail-thin frame of an acoustic-strumming Nebraska Cure fan." The 2005 simultaneous release of two markedly different Bright Eyes albums-the more singer-songwriter-oriented I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning and the darker, computerized Digital Ash in a Digital Urn-displayed the breadth of his talent. Time Magazine listed I'm Wide Awake among its top 10 albums of the year. Since then, Bright Eyes has continued to evolve, its lineup morphing with each successive tour. While supporting his 2007 Cassadaga album, Oberst took over New York City's Town Hall for a week of sold-out shows, with his large, string-augmented ensemble outfitted spectacularly in white suits. He's also recorded and toured with Mogis, Jim James, and M. Ward as Monsters of Folk as well as with his own Mystic Valley Band. For the first leg of his summer 2014 tour, he's bringing along Wilson's other pals, the Southern Californian quartet Dawes as his support act and backing band.

"I feel lucky that I have been able to do this for as longs as I have," declares Oberst. "I've seen so many talented friends come and go, for a lot of different reasons. Sometimes they stop making music because they can't pay the bills or they lose the passion for it. At this point it is my life. I don't know another way to live. There is something fundamental in myself; I have to be this way. It completes what I am."

Upside Down Mountain features many other friends of Oberst's, including producer Jonathan Wilson, engineer Andy LeMaster, bassist Macey Taylor, multi-instrumentalist Blake Mills, and the Swedish sibling folk-rock vocal duo First Aid Kit. What started as exploratory demos with producer-musician Jonathan Wilson at his Fivestar Studios in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, in a home Wilson rents from Oberst, became the first de facto album sessions. Returning to his native Omaha, Nebraska, Oberst kept rolling with the help of frequent collaborator, engineer, and friend Andy LeMaster at his own ARC Studios. Even more tracking followed in Omaha last November and December. Then Oberst and Wilson moved south to Blackbird Studio in Nashville.

"This is a return to an earlier way I wrote," Oberst says of the songs on Upside Down Mountain. "It's more intimate or personal, if you will. Even if all my songs come from the same place, you make different aesthetic decisions along the way. For me, language is a huge part of why I make music. I'm not the greatest guitar player or piano player-I'm not the greatest singer, either-but I feel if I can come up with melodies I like that are fused with poetry I'm proud of, then that's what I bring to the table. That's why I'm able to do this."

KoRn are one of the best-selling Nu Metal bands on the planet. Of their 8 studio albums the first seven have been certified platinum. The demise of the band L.A.P.D. was the starting point for KoRn. The remaining members (Reginald 'Fieldy' Arvizu, James 'Munky' Shaffer, David Silveria and Brian 'Head' Welch) were looking for a new singer, found Jonathan Davis, and KoRn was born. The result was 1994's KoRn. The huge amount of time they spent touring paid up, assuring them of a fan base buying their future albums.

Their second album was 'Life Is Peachy' (1996), which reached No.3 on the Billboard charts and achieved platinum-selling status. 'Life is Peachy' continues right from where the debut had left off, but this time around, KoRn would bring some new, refreshing, and quite unexpected surprises to the table, such as in the playful 'A.D.I.D.A.S.' ('All Day I Dream About Sex').

With lyrics that reached out to many post-grunge teens after the suicide of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, backed up by a wall of heavy toned-down guitars and loud in your face hip-hop drumming, KoRn prepared themselves for a worldwide breakthrough that would happen soon after.

    Fellow Travelers

Fellow Travelers wasn't supposed to be a full-length record, so I'm
a little surprised to admit that it's my favorite Shearwater album so
far. It was meant to be a small thing to release between Animal Joy
and the next full-length. But it took on a life of its own. Re-imagining
and renovating songs by the bands we've toured with was like leafing
through a scrapbook, and brought back the highs and lows of a
    decade of touring.

Touring is an expression of faith - in yourself, in your friends, in the
hope that the world has a place for you. In that spirit, I invited all the
bands we covered to play on Fellow Travelers, with the caveat that you
couldn't play on your own song. Almost everyone rose to the bait: Chris
from the Baptist Generals turned Clinic's "Tomorrow" into a stomping
incantation, while Clinic infected the Generals' "Fucked Up Life" with
drum machines, radio signals, and combo organ. I added recordings I
made of birds and waves in the Falklands to David Thomas Broughton's
"Ambiguity," and he sent us a tape he made of sparrows, bulbuls, and
the clanking shovels of highway workers in Pyongyang, North Korea,
which we spliced into our rock-anthem version of Xiu Xiu's "I Luv the
Valley OH!!" And Jenn from Wye Oak, who, like us, had also toured with
Lou B, added vocals to "Natural One."

Leon Trotsky, who gave the words "fellow travelers" their political aura,
once wrote that "a protest against reality, either conscious or unconscious,
active or passive, optimistic or pessimistic, always forms part of a really
creative piece of work." Listening back, I get a feeling of common effort,
of common purpose, among all of our different musical paths; we've all
tried to defy or transform reality in small ways with our music, and to
prove it with our performing lives.

    Let's Be Still

It wasn't that long ago that the members of Seattle's The Head and the Heart were busking on street corners, strumming their acoustic guitars, stomping their feet and singing in harmony as they attempted to attract the attention of passersby. After capturing that unbridled energy on the band's 2011 debut album for hometown label Sub Pop, the band went from playing open mic nights to selling out headlining shows in prestigious venues. The album became one of Sub Pop's best-selling debut releases in years. And, slowly but surely, ideas began to form for the band's second album, imbued with the experiences of traveling the world and playing to ever-growing crowds.

The Head and the Heart's new album, Let's Be Still, is a snapshot of a band that didn't exist four years ago. Virginia native Jonathan Russell and California transplant Josiah Johnson formed the core songwriting partnership, which was rounded out by drummer Tyler Williams, keyboardist Kenny Hensley, vocalist/violinist Charity Rose Thielen and bassist Chris Zasche, who'd met Russell and Johnson while tending bar at an open mic they frequented. The nascent group dove headrst into writing, recording and performing, and even moved into the same house.

After the breakaway success of their debut and countless shows on the road, the band is in a distinctly different situation. "There is a condence gained from having such an amazing fan base," says group member Jonathan Russell. "You start to trust yourself more. When we were busking, we were lling so much space to keep the listener from walking away." Says Johnson, "We wanted to write songs that felt bigger, and didn't need to be so frantic. I think for the most part we wanted to record an album that sounds like the way we play now."

Adds Russell, "Has there been an impact on our lives since we have become full-time musicians? Sure. On one hand, it's everything you have ever wanted. On the other hand, you start to miss the things you've lost and had to give up. And that's just life. My job is to write about it."

Let's Be Still was recorded at Seattle's Studio Litho with assistance from prior production collaborator Shawn Simmons, and mixed in Bridgeport, Conn., with Peter Katis, revered for his work with bands such as the National, Interpol and the Swell Season.

    Prokofiev & Ravel Piano Concertos

Prokofiev's great Third Piano Concerto has been Martha Argerich's signature piece since she won competitions with it at the age of 16 in 1957. If you're used to Bryon Janis' reading on Mercury or have never heard Argerich play Prokofieff, you're in for a shock. The only other artist I can think of who played the Third with this kind of energy at this breakneck tempo was Prokofiev himself, and Prokofiev's performance is all speed and slop. Despite its power and pace, Argerich's is far more agile, deeply thought out, and various - built upon the precise articulation of rhythmic and dynamic contrasts. Be they fortissississimo or pianissississimo, presto or adagio, every note, every chord, every bravura run and leaping flourish is sounded with passion and precision. It's as if Argerich is uttering one long, complex, fully articulate sentence in one long thrilling breath. Abbado and the Berlin Phil keep up with her, though it often seems (as it often does with distinctive pianists in distinctive performances) as if Argerich is conducting as well as soloing. Full credit goes to DG's engineers, whose close miking of the piano perfectly serves the clarity of line and muscular poetry of Argerich's sensational reading. A must-own disc. - Jonathan Valin, The Absolute Sound, October 2011, Issue 216

    Laraaji: Remixes

Laraaji is a musician, mystic and laughter meditation practitioner based in New York City. He began playing music on the streets in the 1970s, improvising trance inducing jams on a modified autoharp processed through various electronic effects. Brian Eno saw him playing one night in Washington Square Park and invited him to record an album for his seminal Ambient series (Ambient 3: Day Of Radiance, released 1980). Laraaji went onto release a prolific series of albums for a wide variety of labels, many of which he recorded himself at home and sold as cassettes during his street performances. In recent years he has been collaborating with a new generation of underground musicians, such as the 2011 album he recorded for the acclaimed FRKWYS series with Blues Control (That Healing Feeling). As well as the reissues of his music on All Saints, in the past year he has been included on Light In The Attic compilation I Am The Center: Private Issue New Age Music In America 1950 - 1990, and been a live guest of Deerhunter and Jonathan Wilson.

    Highway Queen

Nikki Lane's remarkably dazzling third album,
    Highway Queen, sees the
young Nashville rebel emerge as one of country and
rock's most gifted songwriters. Produced by Lane
and fellow singer-songwriter Jonathan Tyler, and
recorded in Denton, Texas and Nashville, Tennessee,
Highway Queen is an emotional tour-de-force.
Blending potent lyrics, unbridled blues guitars and
vintage Sixties country-pop swagger, Lane's new music
will resonate as easily with Black Keys and Lana
Del Rey fans as those of Neil Young and Tom Petty.

Highway Queen starts with the whiskey-soaked
restlessness of "700,000 Rednecks," a rowdy call to
action, and ends on the profoundly raw "Forever
Lasts Forever," where Lane belts freely, mourning
a failed marriage - the "lighter shade of skin" left
behind from her wedding ring. Lane's journey to
heartbreak takes exquisite turns. "Companion" is
pure Everly Brothers' dreaminess ("I would spend a
lifetime/ Playing catch you if I can"). Elsewhere, she
goes on a Vegas bender on the rollicking "Jackpot,"
fights last-call blues ("Foolish Heart") and tosses
off brazen one-liners at a backroom piano ("Big
    Mouth").

Lane, a Greenville, South Carolina native, is a unique
songwriter who didn't take the traditional country
artist path. Her backwoods roots are undercut by
her chosen career as a fashion entrepreneur (she's
the owner of vintage clothing boutique High Class
Hillbilly) who has lived - and been heartbroken
in - Los Angeles, New York and Nashville. So it's no
surprise that her music seamlessly crosses musical
genres with lyrics steeped in the doomed perseverance
only a true dark horse romantic knows.

Lane's rapid rise in music is thanks to the fervent critical
acclaim of her debut record Walk of Shame
and 2014's Dan Auerbach-produced All Or
Nothin'. With Highway Queen, 2017 is poised
to be Lane's major mainstream breakthrough. So as
she sings on the title track: place your bets, if you
    ain't folding.

    Beast Epic

I can whine about it all but I won't.
    -Samuel E. Beam

The first Iron & Wine song that I ever remember hearing was Dead Man's Will, originally featured on the Yeti 1 compilation CD. Its hushed eloquence and unadorned beauty lent it a sort of soft power*,a triumph of instinct over overstatement. That was in 2001.

In 2017, Beast Epic, Iron & Wine's fourth album of new material for Sub Pop and it's sixth overall, recasts soft power as a series of vignettes, observations and regular old songs that redeem through joy and a certain expectation of grace.

Even the instant classic, Bitter Truth, with a lyric as pained and direct as any I've heard from Iron & Wine, is leavened with background vocals recalling The Jordanaires. Sam Beam has called Beast Epic his most personal album to date. It is the first Iron &Wine album that he's produced since The Creek Drank The Cradle, though the results are vastly different. This album brims with surprise flourishes, classic touches and an appealing confidence that is evident on songs like Call It Dreaming.

After a decade and a half of prodigious expression and exploration, recording as both Iron & Wine and eponymously, Sam Beam confessed that he has finally figured out how to make records. He hadme fooled all along.

Beast Epic will be available worldwide through Sub Pop Records. It's my favorite Iron & Wine album by a mile.

    - Jonathan Poneman

Iron & Wine's Beast Epic was written and produced by Sam Beam, and recorded and engineered by Tom Schick at the Loft in Chicago inJuly 2016 and January 2017. The musicians who played on Beast Epic include longtime Iron & Wine collaborators Robert Burger (keys),Joe Adamik (percussion), and Jim Becker (guitar, banjo, violin, mandolin), along with bassist Sebastian Steinberg (Soul Coughing and Fiona Apple), and Chicagoan Teddy Rankin Parker (cello). Beast Epic was mastered by Richard Dodd in Nashville, Tennessee.
