    Hydra

Within Temptation have announced that they will release their sixth studio album, 'Hydra,' on Jan. 31. In addition, the Dutch band has revealed some unexpected surprises in the form of guest appearances on the disc.

Known for creating their own brand of symphonic metal, Within Temptation have a few surprises in store on 'Hydra.' The guest list includes collaborations with Dave Pirner of Soul Asylum, former Killswitch Engage frontman Howard Jones and perhaps the most surprising of them all - hip-hop artist Xzibit. The set also includes the recently released track 'Paradise (What About Us?)' featuring former Nightwish singer Tarja Turunen.

Xzibit joins forces with Within Temptation on a track called 'And We Run,' a song described by frontwoman Sharon Den Adel as an anthem about how to live your life. "He's rapping at full force on this song, it's really heavy," says Adel. "Xzibit brings a new element to our music that we've never had before! It's a new cross-over and we love it!"

Jones' contribution comes on 'Dangerous,' one of the heavier tracks on the disc. "I always loved Howard's voice," shares Adel. "He makes the song even heavier than it already is. That song is one of my favorite songs on the record and one of the fastest we've ever written. It has the most bass drums we've ever used, too, and a very fast riff which we doubled with synths. It's not a typical synthesizer, though - it's distorted like a guitar, and it's very aggressive."

A Small Turn Of Human Kindness (On Sale)

A Small Turn of Human Kindness, is as dense and as heavy temperamentally as it is musically. The seven songs so subtly bleed together that the listener has no choice, but to view the entire album as a linear orchestration with a singular ebb and flow. A rising and falling action, refined to hell and back. All of these things lead you to believe that any and all true Harvey Milk fans will eventually argue this record as the band's finest work.

    Revelation: Sick Again (Awaiting Repress)

It's been said many times over that suffering can render magnificent, if sometimes horrifying, results when skillfully transmuted into image, word or song. This maxim might be a good summation of the existence of Buzzoven who have notoriously lived the most extreme facets of the rock n' roll lifestyle: drug addiction, rehab, relapse, jail, break ups, reunions.

Through all this they managed to produce some of the most beautifully damaged music since Black Flag's descent into the nihilistic abyss of My War. Straddling the lines of metal, doom and filthy hardcore, Buzzoven still stand as a significant pillar of the '90's underground alongside other such disfigured anomalies (and occasional touring partners) Eyehategod and Neurosis. Their gait may have occasionally faltered due to some of the aforementioned obstacles, but in the first decade of their existence Buzzoven revealed remarkable consistency, creating an ever growing procession of nightmarish, skull-scraping albums and EPs.Though not surprising given their dysfunctional history, the premature burial of their last studio album due to legal entanglements was yet another frustrating occurrence in a long line of minor and major catastrophes for the band.

Written and recorded under a self-described period of exhaustion, drug-induced confusion and frustration their music once again managed to flourish despite (or perhaps because of ) the adverse circumstances under which it was created. Revelation: Sick Again is classic Buzzoven, replete with blistering Sabbath-ian riffing, throat torn eulogies to the narcotically oppressed, and monumental gutter dwelling dirges. Over the course of the albums' eight tracks the untidy trio unfurl their tentacles reaching into the dim recesses of human existence to pull forth yet another grizzled portrait of life gone horribly wrong. Previously available only to bootleg diehards and internet trolls in inferior incarnations, this long lingering blackened gem has finally been disinterred for the world at large and properly presented in all its ragged filthy glory.

During many months of 2011 and 2012 Deville have been stuck in the studio most of the time except for some European festivals and random shows. After two full length albums and a couple of hundred shows all around Europe the new record is a product of that. Trying to take this experience of what the band does best and what works live this new record is wider than previous releases... This brand new recording will see the light of day in 2013 via the band's new home here at Small Stone.

In 2009, after more than 100 gigs all over Europe since the debut album release it was time for the album ''Hail the Black Sky''. Recorded during the early months in 2009 in Malmoe, Sweden by Markus Nilsson and produced by Deville. The band has taken a step to a more straight forward songwriting and this album has more of an album feeling than the last one recording the songs during the same period of time. It follows the pattern of significant Deville grooves and 70`s driven riffing of the darker school. Eleven tracks of rock in the veins of Black Sabbath. Kyuss and Soundgarden it takes you to the next level of 70's rock for the 21st century. This album proves the bands progress to their own sound in the genre of heavy rock and beyond and will definitely take the listeners for a ride.

The Swedish rock band Deville released their full length debut ''Come Heavy Sleep'' in December 2007 on Buzzville Records with great reviews. Two European tours took place in Jan/Feb and Nov/Dec 2008 that went through seven countries. Heaviness and grooves dominates ''Come Heavy Sleep'' that stretches from stoner rock to doom riffs. In 2005/2006 Deville released a record on Daredevil Records a split record (double feature CD/ LP). It was also released in Europe and in the US. The band have existed around six years and have done over 200 gigs and festivals in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Lithuania, Portugal, Spain and the U.K the past five years with bands like Sepultura, Fu Manchu, Mustasch(S) and Brant Bjork.

    Fading Trails

Jason Molina has lived in nine different locations and has had a dozen different backing bands on record in as many different recording environments. "Fading Trails" was recorded in four different studios. The essence of these recordings was extracted to create one cohesive being and thus defines what Magnolia Electric Co. truly is - something that's hard to define. One head, multiple bodies - the opposite of a hydra head.

Heart Ache And Dethroned (Awaiting Repress)

For those who may only be vaguely familiar with the history and subsequent trajectory of Jesu, the re-release of their debut EP, Heart Ache, may function as the most suitable starting place for the process of initial immersion and discovery. Over the span of two towering 20 minute tracks one can hear not only the smoldering remnants of Godflesh embedded in the aural tapestry, but also the foundational elements that would define the future of the Jesu lexicon.

While Heart Ache itself may be reason enough to warrant investigation by the uninitiated, the inclusion of the recently completed Dethroned EP as a part of this release gives further reason. The four tracks from Dethroned were originally conceived and partially finished in 2004, but were only finally completed in 2010

    Weatherhead

Weatherhead is the sophomore album from Helms Alee. Their gamut of timbres from the most guttural blown-out roar to the most graceful lilting melody summon a sense of triumph, empowerment and conquest.

The relentless chugging fuzz and vocal harmonies of Elbow Grease, the concrete thrust of the central riff of 8/16, the thunderstruck arpeggio of Pretty As Pie, the siren song of Pig Pile, the unbridled scuzz of Ripper No Lube and the alternating agit-punk and anthemic approach of the title track all reinforce Helms Alees position as masters of diametrically opposed tactics.

They are the true heroes and heroines of the loud-quiet-loud. Weatherhead was recorded by Matt Bayles at Studio Litho and Red Room Studios in the Winter of 2010-2011.

    Bermuda Drain

Dominick Fernow has been delivering genre defining noise/experimental/electronic releases as Prurient (and via his slew of other bands/collaborations, including Cold Cave, Ash Pool and others) for nearly a decade and a half, many on his own NYC based Hospital Productions. Revered in many circles, and often loathed in them as well, he's cultivated and curated a tastemakingly obsessive worldwide following of like minded folks. The beautiful irony is that it is these very folks that will no doubt be most challenged by what Bermuda Drain represents.

On these nine tracks, we can clearly hear the echoes of Prurient's howling past, but are also faced with something perhaps even more unsettling, that being the territory of the unknown present and its indication of possible futures. The album, both in content and sound, is at once violent, magnetic, abrasive and emotional. The more we listen the deeper we fall into it, taking what has been provided and using it as a tool for our own self reflection.

    Time's Arrow (On Sale)

For many artists who have careers that span more than an album or two, there are often various lines visible in their work - a line from origin to current form, lines between different paradigms of sound, lines across which fans of different manifestations of the artist will not cross. Prurient in 2011 is drawing just such lines, and Time's Arrow proves this point explicitly. Here we bear witness to Dominick Fernow's long running project once again evolving, unfolding, and changing. Taking a bold step away from the sounds which drew attention his way in the formative years, he is clearly moving towards something new, something still taking form in the present moment. It's unsettling, perhaps for followers of Prurient's former incarnations, but extremely important for the longevity and vitality of a determinedly restless and inventive musician as Fernow has consistently proved to be.

If noise music, the genre to which Prurient has most often been assigned, is about confrontation, exploration, and defying expectations, this release measures up on all counts. Yet, much of what made past work identifiable as noise music harsh textures, screams washed in seas of static, clanging unidentified percussion is now gone. Those elements which formerly provided a valuable counterpoint to the harsh din of Prurient's core sound buried melodies, passages of relative serenity, and occasional spoken word bits have come to the fore. A sense of naked clarity and uncomfortable intimacy now brings the listener closer to the world as described the music, rather than pushing away the would-be voyeuristic observer. This is best illustrated on the title track of the EP, Times Arrow, where a glistening synth melody lays atop an undeniably dancey beat, over which a fragmented, but clearly discernable narrative is intoned - sinister in character to be sure, but also clearly without any element that could be described as overtly aggressive.

    Pyramids

Now, several years since its initial release, Pyramids first collection of songs resounds like a communique from a far off galaxy. It could be the music made by Martian interpreters who somehow intercepted and reconfigured the decaying din emanating from the charred surface of Planet Earth.

The resultant impressions sound like cut up fever dream tape loops containing snippets of Xasthur, Tangerine Dream and Mazzy Star layered over, under and through each other. The aural pictures are at once terrifying and soothing, familiar and wholly alien. What seems like it shouldn't does in fact work: black metal blasting stitched together with patches of gauzy melody and angelic warbling. It's one of the most enveloping and simultaneously disorienting documents to have emerged from the hazy outer territories of the heavy music underground in years.

Despite the numerous musical mutations that have sprung up around it since its initial release, Pyramids debut still sounds far beyond the horizons of anything concocted by modern musical scientists. Perhaps through a process of reversed time flow, Pyramids have brought the sounds of the future into our present moment, speculative fiction in aural form. It's hard to say whether we should be reassured or terrified by their findings, but it's safe to say adventurous listeners can't afford to ignore prophetic visions such as these.

    Split Cranium

On Split Cranium's debut album, they offer up a highly satisfying blitzkrieg of Finnish/Amero punk perpetrated by Jussi Lehtisalo (Circle, Pharaoh Overlord), Jukka Kröger, Samae Koskinen (Steel Mammoth) and Aaron Turner (Mamiffer/ex-ISIS), a token American brought in to soften potential U.S. resistance to the Finns' brash mastery of almost every style of rock worth mastering. Of course, it's no coincidence that Mr. Turner is also not exactly a slouch in the vocal department, lending his patented monastic chants and feral roars to the band's stomp n' burn riffola and death-defying d-beats.

Birthed kicking, screaming and drenched in smelly amniotic slime, Split Cranium is the result of a recording session that promptly reversed course. Lehtisalo and Kröger had spent a few days unfurling some free-noise-rock improvisations before deciding to just get their riff on. Circle had recently joined ISIS on the latter's final European tour, during which Lehtisalo and Turner had discussed forming an unstoppable Scandi-American justice league of maximum musical proportions. Right after his improv session went punk, Lehtisalo saw the writing on the wall. The token American was drafted, post-haste. Koskinen was simultaneously hauled in from NWOFHM killers Steel Mammoth. Split Cranium are now more than ready to live up to their name!

    Black Curtain

Broken Ground, the opening track from the forthcoming album Black Curtain, features spikes of reverb-drenched guitar that sprawl across a humming electronic horizon, over which delicately draped vocal melodies twist, collide and dissolve. Drums occasionally rise from the ether, punctuating the meditative passages of pastoral calm. Certainly heavy, but definitely not metal.

    Jouhou

DISCORDANCE AXIS found their unique voice on 1997's Jouhou (Japanese for Information), turning in 18 minutes of sleek, cyberpunked grind that directly addressed human frailty and emotions rather than recycling the same political jeremiads and empty slogans. Jouhou came one year before NASUM's Inhale/Exhale and four years before PIG DESTROYER's Prowler in the Yard. It signaled a sea change in grindcore.

    Daughters (Awaiting Repress)

This isn't technically Daughters' final album, but after recording, half the band quit, and whatever the remaining members (vocalist Alexis Marshall and drummer Jonathan Syverson) come up with in the future probably won't sound much like this. In a February 2010 interview with Noisecreep.com, Marshall all but says so while discussing the new album: [Former guitarist] Nick [Sadler] wrote a lot of the stuff on there, and he was really looking to make it accessible, and see how it fared... There are definitely parts of the record that were written to see how people will respond, which is kind of disappointing.

If Sadler's name sounds familiar, it's probably from the decidedly non-Daughters-like charms of his other group, Fang Island. While he's not officially credited as a songwriter-- the songs on Daughters are attributed to the entire group-- Sadler is listed as a co-producer, which might explain the album's relatively less abrasive sound. Relative to other Daughters records, at least: Those hoping for the abrupt spasms from the group's 11-minute debut, or the slightly less abstract math essayed on Hell Songs, are going to be sorely disappointed when they drop the needle on The Virgin. Most of the song's elements-- the frantic double-timed drumming, the insect-like chatter of the guitars-- are familiar from older Daughters' tracks. Its verse-chorus structure, on the other hand, isn't. And neither is Marshall's vocal transformation into a smooth and confident David Yow impersonator. Even the song titles are streamlined. While these moves might seem like capitulations of some sort, the band doesn't pull any punches because of them.

In fact, this refinement actually serves to focus Daughters' energies. There's still room for flashes of the manic fretwork and double-bass drum damage of old in tracks like the thick and brutal The Dead Singer, or Our Queens, a song that's equal parts fractured mathcore and fist-pumping punk anthem. That said, pummeling hook-filled songs like the The Hit or Sweet Georgia Brown are the new norm. The moves made here are no different than the recent pop moves made by equally uncompromising bands like the Dillinger Escape Plan, Converge, and Torche-- each of those bands still sound like themselves, but they're also open to change and wholly willing to evolve into something else, fan backlash be damned. It's just a shame Daughters couldn't survive this transformation. As I said earlier, hardcore Daughters lovers will probably have plenty of bones to pick with this album. For everyone else, Daughters is a feast to be savored.
