    Horses

Ranked 44/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Before recording the poetic proto-punk 1975 classic Horses, Patti Smith and her band honed the tunes in a triumphant run of shows at New York's iconic venue, CBGB. In the studio, producer John Cale then helped the band to further refine the songs in a process that brilliantly showcases their anarchic spirit and primitive beauty. Smith's background as a rock critic and poet is equally in evidence here as heard on the re-imaginings of such warhorses as Gloria and Land of 1000 Dances, where she boldly adds her own provocative and unflinching lyrics to great effect. Horses' influence on the burgeoning punk-rock movement is undeniable and it remains one of the finest debuts of all-time!

    Horses (Speakers Corner)

Ranked 44/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Patti Smith, the first published poet to move her poetry completely into rock 'n' roll and to entice experimental rock fans into the forbidden cinema of her hallucinatory fantasy (New York Times), began her musical career unconventionally. It took off at a poetry reading where she was backed by Lenny Kaye on guitar; later star photographer Robert Mapplethorpe financed her punk-rock cult single Hey Joe. In 1975, encouraged by her success, Patti Smith released Horses, an album in which she fused rock riffs and spoken rhythms to create a punk-trash sound. The rock scene was electrified, raging about the best garage sound of the 70s (Creem Magazine) and conjectured that Smith had drawn up material from Rimbaud, Burroughs, Dylan and Velvet Underground into a hot needle and injected it under the skin (Sounds Magazine). Later productions were dismissed as sentimental and self-loving outpourings, since the rock-poet didn't continue in the same vein as Horses, with its metallic harshness and raw language. That's why this recording remains an impressive unique production by a visionary rock 'n' roll singer.

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Educated Horses

    Picture Disc

Educated Horses can be described as Zombie's most experimental album to date. Writing for Rob Zombie for the first time, John 5 experimented with a number of acoustics, which can be heard on tracks such as Sawdust in the Blood and Death of It All. Foxy Foxy is the most mainstream and party-going song that he has written yet. Yet the album still contains his signature horror tastes.

    Pale Horses

It's impossible to imagine modern underground music without mewithoutYou: the influence of their fifteen-year legacy has been nothing less than seismic. Pale Horses, mewithoutYou's sixth album, continues their unwavering artistic vision, while at the same time reinvents the band as uniquely as any of their fans would expect it to. Aaron Weiss has again produced a work of genius with his nonpareil poetic voice, rivaled only by the soundtrack the rest of his band has forced him to compete against through these eleven songs. The end result is a beautiful fusion not unlike the music found on the band's most revered releases. The guitar work is precise: delicately soft and tender during lulling moments like the opener "Pale Horse" and fiercely riff-centric on the Brother, Sister reminiscent "Mexican War Streets." Complimenting it is the constant combination of the catchiest bass lines you've ever heard and tasteful, steady drum grooves that harken back to Catch Us For the Foxes, the band's revered second album that has sold over 50 thousand copies to date. The warm, folk leanings ever-present on past albums shine through on the gentle "Magic Lantern Days" and the swirling organs of the heartbreaking story told throughout "Dorothy." Epic in scope, Pale Horses is an emotional journey as captivating as any of their classic releases - referential to the best parts of their catalog with a distinguished vitality, captured in the band's signature hauntingly iconic way.

    Wild Horses Rock Steady

Johnny Hammond's 1972 soul-jazz beauty is another stunning example of great creativity at Creed Taylor's Kudu label through the mid-'70s. Arranged by Bob James, Hammond's trademark B-3 work is showcased here on six extended cover versions of tunes from the pop vernacular. The lineup includes guitarists George Benson, Eric Gale, and Melvin Sparks, saxophonists Grover Washington, Jr. and Pepper Adams, bassist Ron Carter (playing electric as well as double bass), and drummers Bernard Purdie and Billy Cobham! There are grooves galore in this wondrously mixed set, from the smoking guitar breaks in the read of Aretha Franklin's Rock Steady to the syncopated organ pyrotechnics in It's Impossible, with Washington playing his ass off around Hammond's organ breaks, and the beautiful horn arrangements by James in Peace Train. The funky-butt glimmer in I Don't Know How to Love Him could have been played by the Stax/Volt horns with a Funk Brothers rhythm section. James weaves a string section in harmonic counterpoint to Hammond's organ in the melody, creating a moving tapestry of textures against the backbeat. But nothing can prepare the listener for the closing cover of Jagger and Richard's Wild Horses, with a military snare beat providing an unlikely intro to an All Along the Watchtower-like progression that transforms itself seamlessly into a darkly minor reading of the original melody, with beautiful fills by Benson and Sparks. When the horns kick in during the refrain with plenty of fuzz guitar and bass over the top, the listener falls headlong into the magic of dirty groove and roll.

    Hors d'Oeuvres

Having recently relocated to her home state of Virginia from Philadelphia, Annie Sachs (a.k.a. Tickley Feather) has recorded her newest album Hors D'oeuvres. Recorded in an old dilapidated farmhouse in the Shenandoah woods, Hors D'oeuvres brilliantly captures Annie's Southern Gothic meets Existential Hillbilly vibe. Focused around a sense of joy, the new material is a marked change from her previous work and its sense of moodiness and oppression. Imbued with a purposeful anthemic quality, these songs reach out to the listener embracing a hauntingly beautiful tension.

Released in December 1974, Dark Horse capped a prolific year for George, during which he had established his own Dark Horse record label, built a recording studio in his Friar Park home in England, and completed an ambitious tour of North America. Throughout the year, Harrison produced albums for several artists while also recording his own. The songs on the LP document both George's fallibility, in 'Simply Shady,' and his spirituality, in 'It Is 'He' (Jai Sri Krishna).' Dark Horse reached the top five in America, sounding a high note at the end of Harrison's rather frenetic year.

    Borrow A Horse

Old Calf formed as a duo in the small, but musically vibrant town of Charlottesville, VA by Ned Oldham (The Anomoanon, Palace Music) and accordionist Marty Metcalfe, slowly accruing members on route to recording their debut album. Michael Clem (bass, mandola, dead-on harmonies) and Brian Caputo (percussion) round out the group of Southern gentlemen, who tightened up their sound rehearsing in Neds garage, and performing around town on weekend nights.

Demos were cut this past summer, of which Oldham says, Im sure Ive never had a clearer plan of how a record should go before, and its true that the finished album is near identical in sequence and structure. Touching on ground most groups do not know exist, Borrow A Horse is rich with melody and instrumentation, its simple songs rooted in folk and bluegrass, and presented in a swirl of psychedelia. Its a near-perfect album, forged in history, created in the present, and timeless in sound.

The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse (Awaiting Repress)

Rich with Beach Boys style harmonies, Roy Orbison reverbs and orchestra, Pink Floyd's pacing and Freddie Mercury's falsetto, the second record by Montreal's Besnard Lakes is a luxurious foray into sound and music. They're masters of finely-honed experimental pop songs that invoke the eerie Lynchian setting as aided and abetted by the music of Julee Cruise, but on this record, the band throws into the mix a mad dash of Fleetwood Mac proportioned swagger and ambition.

Of Horses, Kids, And Forgotten Women

Originally released in 1968, Hearts And Flowers' second and final album, Of Horses, Kids, and Forgotten Women, is mentioned mostly in passing as the major recording debut of future Eagle, Bernie Leadon. This is totally unfair as the album is a classic slice of late '60s West Coast psychedelic country-rock that is as good as or better than their amazing debut. Everything All The Time

Guitarist/vocalist Ben Bridwell and bassist Mat Brooke formed Band Of Horses in 2004 after the dissolution of their nearly ten-year run in northwest melancholic darlings Carissa's Wierd. Carissa's Wierd trafficked in sadly beautiful orchestral pop, whose songs told unflinching stories of heartbreak and loss, leavened with defeatist humor. Band Of Horses rises from those ashes. Buoyed by Bridwell's warm, reverb-heavy vocals (which channel a strange brew of Wayne Coyne, Neil Young, and Doug Martsch), the group's woodsy, dreamy songs ooze with amorphous tension, longing, and hope. Both raggedly epic and delicately pensive, this is an album painted gorgeously in fragile highs and lows.

    Infinite Arms

Originally released in 2010, Infinite Arms is the third full-length from the Low Country's premier rock 'n' roll outfit Band of Horses. Produced by Band of Horses with additional production from Phil Ek and mixed by Dave Sardy, the 12-tracks on Infinite Arms project the essence of the different locales across America that became the setting for the recording and songwriting process behind the album.

The rich musical heritage of Muscle Shoals, AL, the sublime beauty of Asheville's Blue Ridge Mountains, the glamorous Hollywood Hills and the vast Mojave desert all influenced the sounds on Infinite Arms and helped yield the group's most focused and dynamic recordings to date. The serene woods of Northern Minnesota and the band's native Carolinas inspired the songwriting, lending the compositions an air of comfort and familiarity.

Band of Horses is Ben Bridwell, Creighton Barrett, Ryan Monroe, Tyler Ramsey and Bill Reynolds. Long-time touring members of the group, Infinite Arms marks the recording debut of Ramsey and Reynolds, while Barrett and Monroe graced the last album, Cease to Begin. Through touring together in support of Cease to Begin and during breaks in the Infinite Arms recording process, the band have become a cohesive force with all members making invaluable contributions to the unmistakable sound that founder Bridwell has crafted since the band's inception.
