Ghetto Music: The Blueprint Of Hip Hop

Amongst hip-hop fans, Boogie Down Productions' first two albums - Criminal Minded (1987) and By All Means Necessary (1988) - both loom very large. And for good reason: they both captured one of the late 1980s' most important and influential crews at their highest powers of lyricism and musical invention.

That being said, too many people sleep on BDP's third LP, Ghetto Music. Released in 1989, when the hip-hop world was truly beginning to explode and reach new heights of sales and exposure around the world, the album is arguably as powerful as the group's first two.

As on By All Means Necessary, in the wake of the tragic death of original founder, producer and DJ Scott LaRock, KRS-One pushed along mightily on the production side, with help from his extended crew. Musically the sound created on albums 2 & 3 was funky, catchy, and continually innovative, giving him the perfect backdrop to build his "Edutainment" syllabus.

Lyrically there was never a question about KRS' power, and on Ghetto Music he continues to impress, teach and ask important questions. Clear cases in point are two of the album's singles, "You Must Learn" and "Why Is That?" but he gets even deeper on lesser-jocked tracks like the anti-police thought-piece "Who Protects Us From You" (still sadly relevant in 2017), "Ghetto Music" and "World Peace."

Still as strong and entertaining today as it was almost three decades ago, this new reissue is a perfect way for younger fans to embrace one of the most underrated hip-hop platters of the era.

    Bizarre Ride II

Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde" is the debut album from The Pharcyde. Released in late 1992, the album was hailed
by critics and rap fans alike. Produced entirely by J-Swift with easily some of the tightest and most inventive beats
of the era, "Bizarre Ride" features only one guest appearance, provided by little known Los Angeles rapper
Buckwheat (who would become known as "Bucwheed" from The Wascals). Released during the dominant Gangsta
Rap era of the West Coast, the music was described as "refreshing" due to its playful, light-hearted humor and lush,
jazzy production. Along with albums like "To Whom it May Concern " by Freestyle Fellowship, and "I Wish My
Brother George Was Here" by Del tha Funkee Homosapien, "Bizarre Ride" helped establish a new alternative scene
on the West Coast followed by artists such as Hieroglyphics, The Coup and Jurassic 5.

The album featured four singles, all of which were accompanied by music videos. The group's debut single, "Ya
Mama", originally released in 1991, was the song that landed the group their record deal, but it failed to reach any
Billboard singles chart. Their first major exposure came with the release of the album's second single, "Passing Me
By". The song became the group's biggest crossover hit and is now considered a classic Hip Hop single. The
album's third single, "4 Better or 4 Worse", was released in mid-1993 and featured the stoner song "Pack the Pipe"
and the throwback track "Return of the B-Boy" as its B-Side. The final single, the SlimKid solo track "Otha Fish",
    was released in late 1993.

The album was certified gold in 1996, and it's stature has only grown since with the release constantly appearing
on Best Of lists such as the 100 Best Rap albums by The Source, Top 100 Favorite Records of The 90s by Pitchfork
and Rolling Stone's Top 25 Hip Hop Albums as listed by Chris Rock.

    Atliens

OutKast has almost single-handedly defined the sound of Atlanta rap. Tongue-flippin', rhyme-spittin' and Cadillac-ridin', all with a Southern accent, Big Boi and Dre have proved tobe the South's ideal MCs. ATLIENS continues in the same vein as Outkast's 1994 debut, SOUTHERNPLAYALISTICADILLACMUZIK, with producers Organized Noize back to accompany the duo's laid-back flow. Big Boi and Dre proclaim to prove a point with every rhyme, never wasting a line. They like to think of themselves as outcasts from the hip-hop community--aliens,so to speak. Their tracks have an outer-space feeling to them--a feeling that, ironically, has warmed the community right up to them. They're so out, they're in.

    A Wolf In Sheeps Clothing

Get on Down is proud to present A Wolf in Sheep's
Clothing, the debut album by Black Sheep, available for the
first time ever as double vinyl release. On the initial release
of this classic it was "The Choice Is Yours" that blew the
roof off with even the most of novice rap fans gravitating to
the song's energy. The cut has gone on to be featured in a
long list of films and commercials (including the KIA
campaign with the hip hop hamsters).

Singles like "The Choice Is Yours" and "Flavor of the Month" made a perfect landing strip for those to delve deeper into the
duo's debut. Often humorous ("Strobelite Honey"), often serious ("Black with No N.V (No Vision)", Black Sheep were able to
craft an album that displayed their witty sensibilities while also staying conscious in true Native Tongue form. From the moment
the album starts with Prince Paul introducing the "lowlifes of the family tree" you know you are in for something special .and
different. Mista Lawnge's production is every bit as textured as fellow counter parts Tribe or De La, while standing out as being
completely original and fresh. Tracks like "Butt in the Meantime", "Try Counting Sheep" and "La Menage (Featuring Q Tip)" are
great examples of the duo's original style - complex layered beats (everything from Jazz, Soul and Rock all meshed together
perfectly) to compliment Dres' distinct voice and word play. With other standout album cuts like "For Those That Slept" and
"To Who It May Concern" it seemed as if they had an endless bag of treats, each offering something different while
    preserving the groups style.

Polar opposite to what other groups at the time were doing, Black Sheep hit a homerun with their debut that few hip hop acts
would ever reach. VH1 called "The Choice Is Yours" one of the Top 100 Hip Hop tracks of all time and with not one bad or filler
track, this full album certainly ranks as one of the best hip hop releases of the 90s.

    Slum Village, Vol. 0

The mark that the late producer J Dilla left upon hip-hop during the 90s and early-to-mid 00s is undeniable, and his work with De La Soul, Busta Rhymes, The Pharcyde, and many more has long been cemented in the annals of hip-hop history. It was during his time as a member of seminal Detroit group Slum Village however that ranks as among his greatest. His work with rappers Baatin and T3 would be a strong influence upon modern rappers like Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar and earn widespread critical praise, and comparisons to other legendary groups like A Tribe Called Quest. In speaking retrospectively on their most famous album Fan-Tas-Tic Vol. 1, The Roots' drummer Questlove has said of the release that it single-handedly birthed neo-soul.

J Dilla has been gone for over 10 years now, and Slum Village has moved on from their time with the legendary beatsmith, recruiting new members along the way. Despite this, new Dilla compositions are still being discovered, and his legacy continues to be shared and celebrated with a modern hip-hop audience. Ne'Astra Music Group now presents a new compilation of rare Dilla material: Vol. 0. Ten tracks featuring the classic Slum Village lineup of Dilla on vocals and production, with Baatin & T3 also on the mic, collected by modern SV member Young RJ from unreleased material and demos recorded between 1994 and 1997. The knowledgeable hip-hop head may recognize key tracks from the circulated EPHCY Sessions, while others have never seen the light of day. A piece of hip-hop history that would have otherwise wallowed in obscurity, until now.

Freddie Gibbs is the product of violent, drug-laden streets but unlike most rappers with similar resumes, he brings the block to the booth
without inhibition or an exaggerated rap persona. Piñata, a 17 track collaboration with producer Madlib, is the best distillation yet of his
transparent approach to making music, combining an at times stark honesty with electrifying talent as a lyricist and performer.

Piñata is "a gangster Blaxploitation film on wax," says Gibbs, who came up on the streets of Gary, Indiana, the disregarded city previously
best known for producing Michael Jackson. Here he is joined by Mac Miller, Earl Sweatshirt, Raekwon, Scarface, Domo Genesis, Ab-Soul
and a host of others in setting his soliloquies of the streets alongside film snippets and dusted funk, soul and prog musical tapestries. While
this is the latest in a series of single-artist collaborations for Madlib, after Jaylib (J Dilla), Madvillainy (MF Doom) and the street-centric
O.J. Simpson with Detroit's Guilty Simpson, the pairing is unique as it is the first time for Gibbs working with just one producer.

On Piñata, where Gibbs can shift from textbook lessons in robbing and drugging on trackslike "Scarface" and "Knicks," to perhaps the
album's most personal song, "Broken," a collaboration with Scarface, who, along with Tupac, DMX and 50 Cent, make up the rapper's own
Mount Rushmore of MCs ("You're getting a hurricane of all those motherfuckers hitting you at once when you listen to Freddie Gibbs," he
says). "Deeper," a Gibbs favorite and the third single from the album after "Thuggin'" (2012) and "Shame," (2013) is an ode to hip-hop in
the mold of Common's "I Used to Love H.E.R."; "High," featuring Danny Brown, is self-explanatory and just what you would expect from
Gibbs, Madlib and one of Detroit's finest; while on "Real," Gibbs addresses an old score just as Michael Corleone settled all family business
    on baptism day.

As a producer, Madlib, quite simply, is music, and ten years into his career-a time when other artists become comfortable-Gibbs remains
restless, focused, with an eye on the competition and their position relative to his ascent. This is because mentally, he's still on the corner
hustling, which would be the downfall of the average rapper. With Piñata, Gibbs confirms that he is anything but average.

The 14th Side (The B-side Of The Seventh 45) Features Unique Etchings With Different "Wild Style" Graphics

Unique "Kay-Dee Casebook" Packaging - All Seven 7-inches Fit Into A Book As Self-contained Pages

KAY-DEE RECORDS, the online store and label owned and operated by Kenny Dope, takes things to the next level with the debut of its "Book Series." Kenny's vision for Kay-Dee's first book was to create a premium set with a mix of well-known and never-before-seen "Wild Style" photos, in addition to liner notes detailing the stories behind the music of one of his favorite films.

The year was 1981 and young, New York City-based filmmaker Charlie Ahearn was working on what would become one of the most important artifacts in the history of hip-hop music and culture: "Wild Style." He was scraping by to fund his efforts, which were far from a surefire money-making enterprise. Hip-hop wasn't even called "hip-hop" at the time, and it was still viewed as a fad, by both nationwide music listeners and a majority of the press.

As Ahearn and his crew continued to film scenes from "Wild Style" (which starred graffiti writers Lee Quinones and Lady Pink, among many other hip-hop and "Downtown" luminaries of the day), they reached an interesting juncture: what music would DJs in the film use in the soon-to-be-legendary live performance scenes?
The director - making a visionary move more than a half-decade before any sampling or music clearance lawsuits would appear - decided that he wanted to control the music to be used in these scenes. They would create their own breakbeats, instead of using known cuts of the day; for instance, The Incredible Bongo Band's "Apache" or James Brown's "Funky Drummer."

While Ahearn headed off to film more scenes, he left these important musical production duties to an up-and-comer who, thanks in part to his crucial role as Phade in the film, would grow to be one of hip-hop's and graffiti's most important ambassadors of the 1980s: Fred "Fab 5 Freddy" Brathwaite.

Over the course of a week's time in the late summer of 1981, the Wild Style Breakbeats sessions were completed and mastered. None of the three principal musicians who played on the Breakbeats were ever in the studio at the same time. And the final number of white-label-only Breakbeats 12-inches was, according to Freddy, only 100, making them some of the rarest "Holy Grail" pieces of vinyl in music history.

The original Breakbeats vinyl was given to the DJs in the film - including GrandWizzard Theodore, Charlie Chase and Kevie Kev Rockwell - who used them in live performance scenes, most of which were completed in the spring of 1982. Interestingly, out of 13 Breakbeats given to DJs, only five were ever used in these performance scenes or on the film's much-revered soundtrack.

For this premium Wild Style Breakbeats set, renowned DJ, producer, and lifelong "Wild Style" fanatic Kenny Dope obtained the original reel-to-reel tapes from director Charlie Ahearn and went about re-EQing and extending the length of each Breakbeat [most were originally about one minute long]. Thanks to these efforts, all 13 Breakbeats are presented here with top-level audio quality that has never been heard before. Additionally, since only bootlegs of the Wild Style Breakbeats have ever existed, this is the first time they have ever been presented on their own, as an official full album release.

This stunning set with unique "Kay-Dee Casebook" packaging - officially licensed from Charlie Ahearn by Kenny Dope and Kay-Dee Records, and packaged by Get On Down - is a hip-hop junkie's dream. It presents a crucial rap artifact with the respect it has always deserved but, until now, has not been given. It is sure to sit on your shelf alongside other trophies from the music and culture that has touched the lives of so many over the past four decades.

    City: Works Of Fiction

Combining his trademark brand of Fourth World fusion with new influences from the emerging hip-hop scene, this 1990 album is a landmark release in Jon Hassell's career to date. Futuristic sci-fi funk with a completely melted production aesthetic -- instruments and samples blur into one another in the manner of the best dub records. Presented here in a deluxe triple disc edition alongside a 1989 concert performance of the City group, mixed live by Brian Eno, and a carefully edited sequence of alternate takes, demos and re-interpretations by current electronic producers that presents a parallel dimension version of the original release. Remix artists include new Warp artist patten as well as 808 State, No UFOs, Bass Clef and Some Truths The vinyl edition features the original album re-cut as a double album for extra wide grooves and improved bass response (the original issue had an hour of music squeezed onto a single piece of vinyl).

    Beyond My Means

Big Pauper (formerly known as Panzah Zandahz) is an acclaimed mash-up artist, electronic/psychedelic hip hop producer, circuit bent visual artist and founder of the abstract hip-hop label Token Recluse Recordings.

Under Token Recluse Panzah Zandahz released an assortment of DJ break records, singles and unauthorized remix albums including the over hyped and now-very-dated internet smash hit Me & THIS Army: Radiohead Remixed & Mashed Up by PZ (2005) which was downloaded an estimated 3 million times.

After an unauthorized remix tribute to his long-time hero, Beck Hanson, Panzah Zandahz moved away from the mash-up scene and in to a collaborative project with NY based spoken word artist Brad Hamers as the production half of Two Ton Sloth. Beyond My Means is his debut LP.

2014 is the 20th anniversary of Tical, the debut solo album of Wu-Tang Clan member Method Man, released November 15, 1994, on Def Jam Records. It
was the first Wu-Tang solo album released after the group's debut,Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). Similar to all first generation solo Wu-Tang
projects, Tical was mainly produced by group member RZA. The album features guest appearances from several Wu-Tang members including RZA,
Raekwon, & Inspectah Deck. The album was a commercial success, reaching number four on the Billboard 200, and number one on the Top R&B/Hip
Hop Albums chart. On July13, 1995, it was certified platinum. This success was driven by its two singles, Bring the Pain and I'll Be There for You/You're
All I Need to Get By. Tical has since been hailed by several music critics as a hip hop classic and its success is matched by its influence as a major piece
in the East coast hip hop renaissance.
