    Teeming with organic energy, palpable voltage, and countless textures, the LP faithfully recreates the dimensions, vibes, and events associated with the six days Dylan and Co. spent at Columbia's Studio A.     The seventh volume of Bob Dylan's Bootleg Series doubles as the soundtrack to No Direction Home, Martin Scorseses's feature-length documentary covering Dylan's career from its beginnings to 1966 (it was aired in two parts on PBS in September 2005 and released in expanded form on DVD that same month). Unlike the previous three installments of The Bootleg Series, which focused exclusively on live concerts, No Direction Home is assembled from a variety of sources, including home recordings, publishing demos, alternate studio takes, and live recordings, with the first disc devoted to early acoustic recordings and the second to electric music. In fact, No Direction Home proceeds chronologically, filling in gaps between the proper albums or, more often, providing a parallel history of the most productive era of Dylan's career. All of this material -- with the exception of Song to Woody, taken from his debut, and a cataclysmic version of Like a Rolling Stone taken from the Royal Albert Hall show that was released as Bob Dylan Live '66 -- is previously unreleased, and much of it has not been widely bootlegged (and the cuts that have been bootlegged, such as Dink's Song, have never been heard in such crystal-clear fidelity). Where the inaugural edition of The Bootleg Series had many previously unreleased Dylan originals, there is only one here, the tentative opener, When I Got Troubles, a sweet, simple 1959 song that finds Dylanin his formative stage. In place of unheard songs are a slew of alternate versions of familiar tunes. On the first two LP's, these are largely live versions of such warhorses as Blowin' in the Wind, Masters of War, and A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall, recorded when the songs were still fresh. These live performances have an immediacy and intimacy that not only illustrate what a powerful folksinger Dylan was, but also suggest how the songs might have sounded when they were new tunes. Toward the end of the second LP, alternate versions that are significantly different from the final versions begin to surface with an early take on Mr. Tambourine Man recorded at the Another Side of Bob Dylan sessions with Ramblin' Jack Elliott on second guitar and backing vocals. The third and fourth LP's contain several alternates that are similarly notably different, highlighted by a lively, careening It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry with a different final verse, a Desolation Row with electric guitar, Highway 61 Revisited without the siren whistle, a slower, heavier, blusier take on Leopard-Skin Pill Box Hat, a relaxed version of Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again that lacks the carnivalesque swirl of sound from the Blonde on Blonde version, and a lean, insistent Visions of Johanna.

    Everything here is uniformly excellent and worth hearing well more than once. That alone, of course, would make this yet another worthwhile addition to any serious Dylan collection, but what makes No Direction Home noteworthy as an album is that it is the first Dylan record to offer an aural biography of Dylan. This does a superb job of tracing the development of Dylan as a musician, taking him from a young folkie singing standards, through the rush of his early standards, and to the visionary music he made once he went electric. Put in this context, the electric music on the third and fourth LP's sounds as bracing and brilliant and surprising as it did in the '60s, while the acoustic folk on LP's one and two sounds vibrant, pure, and alive. After all these years, that's a hard accomplishment to pull off, and to the credit of everybody involved in this terrific release, they've been able to make even the most familiar Dylan tunes feel new again.


    As usual, this deluxe edition comes from the original mix down masters and was transferred by Bernie Grundman to lacquer on on Classic's all tube analog cutting system. This deluxe 4-LP set includes two alternate cover art gatefold jackets (Blonde on Blonde and Bringing it all Back Home), a 60+ page 12 x12 booklet all housed in an a special outer box.

    Second Winter (Speakers Corner)

    Johnny Winter released the album Second Winter, a passionate and fervent collection of songs, just a few months after his record debut. This legendary band's steadfast commitment to blues is apparent in every single note they play, although tender emotions are all the more discernible in hard, rock'n'roll-like outbursts than ever before. Winter blends his crystal-clear, unmannered guitar playing with the gravelly charm of his raspy voice to produce a compact sound in which both his own compositions and old favourites (Johnny B. Goode) are revived. It is quite clear that the white shooting star is on a par with the giants of blues as far as vocals and guitar playing are concerned.
    It is often speculated over as to whether Johnny's new ideas were simply too numerous for a single LP, or whether the producers thought they were not quite sufficient for a double LP. Whatever the answer, the original was released as a three-sided album, with a blank fourth side! In order to fill the album with fiery rock'n'roll, a new production with the 45 rpm versions of Miss Ann, Hustled Down In Texas, and Highway 61 Revisited is now included on the fourth side. It goes without saying that alongside the present double LP Winter's audiophile first release (Columbia CS 9826) is available from Speakers Corner, too.

    About Speakers Corner



    At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.



    During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.



    A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.



    We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.



    We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.



    To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Super Session

    Super Session (1968) was conceived by Al Kooper and features the work of guitarists Mike Bloomfield and Stephen Stills. Kooper and Bloomfield had previously worked together on the sessions for the ground-breaking classic Highway 61 Revisited by Bob Dylan. For Super Session, Kooper recruited keyboardist Barry Goldberg and bassist Harvey Brooks, both members of the Electric Flag, along with well-known session drummer "Fast" Eddie Hoh.


    On the second day of recording, with the tapes ready to roll, Bloomfield did not show up. Kooper hastily called upon Stephen Stills, also in the process of leaving his band Buffalo Springfield. Regrouping behind Stills, Kooper's session men cut mostly vocal tracks, including "It Takes A Lot to Laugh, It Takes A Train to Cry" from Highway 61 and a lengthy and atmospheric take of "Season of the Witch" by Donovan.


    The album peaked at #12 on the Billboard 200, and has been certified a Gold record. The success of this record opened the door for the "supergroup" concept of the late 1960s and 1970s - Blind Faith, Crosby, Stills & Nash, and the like.

    To kick off the New Year in 1958, the New York Philharmonic and its music director Leonard Bernstein debuted a new piano concerto by Dimitri Shostakovich. The work, the second of his piano concertos, had been written ten months before for Shostakovitchs son, Maxim, who was 19 at the time. Bernstein, as pianist and conductor, not only performed the U.S. debut, but on January 6th he recorded the work for Columbia Records.


    One of the most versatile musicians of the 20th century, Bernstein was a great interpreter of the music of that era. Greatly moved by Shostakovichs music, he was one of the Soviet composers greatest champions. The Second Piano Concerto is often referred to as a fiery and youthful work, making it a perfect fit for the mercurial Bernstein. The performance captured here has the same consuming passion we know from his famous recording of Gershwins Rhapsody In Blue. It may well be the works definitive recording.


    Another work that will forever be associated with Bernstein as both pianist and conductor is Ravels Concerto in G. This jazzy and uplifting piece is a perfect playmate for the Shostakovich concerto. No one brought more to this work than Bernstein, who had been playing it with the New York Philharmonic since 1944. Like Ravel, Bernstein was greatly inspired by jazz and its clear (especially on this new LP!) that Bernstein understood the mood and syncopation of the piece like few before him.


    Impex Records new LP is a stunning time-capsule for classical record production during the golden era of early stereo: minimally miked, full of natural ambience and incredibly dynamic. The Shostakovich concerto was recorded in the enormous Colorama Ballroom of the Saint George Hotel, the location where Bernstein recorded Rhapsody In Blue and Tchaikovskys Romeo And Juliet. The Ravel was recorded on April 7th, 1958 in the magical acoustics of the 30th Street studio.
