Hemispheres200 Gram Vinyl
Remastered From Original Analogue Masters
Another favorite of true Rush fans, this sixth studio album, Hemispheres, once more explored fantasy and science fiction themes in Neil Peart's lyrics. The final track, the ambitious nine-and-a-half minute 'La Villa Strangiato,' was the band's first instrumental. The album peaked at #47 on the Billboard charts, and was the group's fourth consecutive gold album in the U.S., featuring the singles 'The Trees' and 'Circumstances.' Originally released in 1978, Hemispheres has now been remastered on 200-gram, heavyweight vinyl at legendary Abbey Road Studios using the Direct to Metal Mastering (DMM) audiophile copper plating process, all from original analogue masters.1. We had the MMF-11 balanced and playing in less than an hour (this includes setting up its fishline-mounted antiskating weight). Even with headphones, it's the most sparkling, accurate turntable we've ever used. And vibrations in our wood-floored testing space never fazed the 39.5-pound unit. This is audiophile bliss.
- Victor Krummenacher, Wired
The Music Hall mmf-11.1 turntable, our latest flagship, is a 2-speed belt-driven audiophile turntable, featuring the unique quadruple-plinth construction originated by Music Hall.
The distinctive design isolates the critical sound reproducing components, each on their own plinth. The tonearm is mounted to the upper plinth and the inverted ceramic main bearing is mounted to the second plinth allowing the partially sunken 1 1/2 acrylic platter to spin freely.
Moving the main bearing to the second plinth improved cartridge tracking and significantly lowered background noise. The adjustable magnetic-levitation isolation feet, microprocessor speed control, motors, flywheel, and wiring are all mounted to the bottom plinth. The motors, flywheel, and speed control are further isolated on their own vibration damped dual-plinth platform, which is separately isolated from the upper three main plinths.
Sorbothane hemispheres separate each of the three main plinths and provide additional vibration damping. The bottom plinth functions as a mass-loaded resonant sink for the entire turntable. Two motors and a flywheel are used to increase torque and speed stability. The mmf-11.1 comes in a high-gloss piano black lacquer finish and ships without cartridge. A large encapsulating acrylic dustcover is included.$4,495.00MMF 11.1 Turntable Buy Now
Carnival ElectricosGalactic was formed eighteen years ago in New Orleans; the band cut their teeth playing the biggest party in America, Mardi Gras, where the entire city shuts down completely to celebrate. Carnivale Electricos is the sound of that party, and much more. Its a carnival record that evokes the primal, electric atmosphere of a whole city vibrating together to one beat, in a seismic wave that runs from New Orleans down through the Caribbean to the southern hemisphere and the mighty mega carnivals of Brazil.
To make Carnivale Electricos, the members of Galactic drew on the skills, stamina, and funk they deploy in the all night party of their annual Lundi Gras show that goes till sunrise and leads sleeplessly into Mardi Gras day. Armed with a slew of carnival ready guests from high school marching bands to 72-year-old Al 'Carnival Time' Johnson, reworking his 1960 classic song that became the anthem of Mardi Gras, Galactic whisks the listener around the neighborhoods to feel the Mardi Gras moment in all its variety of flavors.
The Brazilian influence on Carnivale Electricos appears in three Brazilian-flavored instrumentals, including JuLou, which riffs on an old Brazilian tune, even though the name refers to the brass funk Krewe of Julu, the walking krewe that Galactic members participate in on Mardi Gras morning. Thats the kind of connection Galactic wanted to make with Carnivale Electricos, to draw together the carnival spirit of worldwide celebration into one ecstatic, funky union. Khun Narin's Electric Phin BandIt all started over a year ago with the caption "MINDBLOWING PSYCHEDELIA FROM THAILAND"-the Youtube video that accompanied this headline on the Dangerous Minds Blog was exactly that. Here was a group of Thai
musicians being filmed parading through a remote village hundreds of miles
away from Bangkok playing some of the heaviest Psych known to mankind out
of a crazy homemade soundsystem. Who were these men and how on earth was
this not some unearthed archived footage from the '60s or '70s?! The Youtube
clip quickly made its rounds amongst music enthusiasts leaving many in the
Western hemisphere to question who this group of contemporary Thai villagers
(loosely named Khun Narin's Electric Phin Band) was.
Six months after that first encounter with Khun Narin's Electric Phin Band, a
Los Angeles music producer named Josh Marcy used Facebook and some unlikely interpreters at his local Thai restaurant to get in contact with the band and
inquire whether they'd be interested in having him travel to their town to record
their music for a global audience. At first the band was naturally suspicious, but
through subsequent interactions the group's leader and namesake Khun Narin
(also known simply as "Rin") warmed to the idea of having Marcy come visit.
And so began the journey of uncovering who these mysterious men from an
obscure blog post actually were.
Khun Narin's Electric Phin Band's membership is always in rotation and spans
several generations, from high school kids to men well into their 60s. A standard
engagement has the band setting up at the hosting household during the morning rituals, playing several low-key sets from the comfort of plastic lawn chairs
occasionally working in a cover version of a foreign classic (The Cranberries
'Zombie' is a recent favorite) while the beer and whiskey flow freely. After a
mid-day banquet, they start up the generator and lead a parade through the community to the local temple, picking up more and more partiers along the way1. Lam Phu Thai #1

The Big Mango"Sam Shalabi has raised the bar for modern psychedelic music by composing this epic suite for his 20-piece Land of Kush orchestra. Utilizing African, Middle Eastern, Indian, jazz, rock, and folkloric sources, The Big Mango weaves a seamless montage of styles in a transcendent way that is rarely, if ever, achieved. A singular cohesive statement built around four key tracks written for four different female vocalists it will demand your attention from start to finish." - Alan Bishop (Sun City Girls/Sublime Frequencies)
Osama (Sam) Shalabi moved to Cairo in 2011, settling in an apartment one block from Tahrir Square, in the midst of Egypt's 'Arab Spring'. Shalabi describes The Big Mango, his new and phenomenal work for his Land Of Kush big band, as "a love letter to Cairo"
framed by "the beautiful, surreal madness of the city as joyous, horrific, historical events were
unfolding". The music was also inspired by time spent in Dakar, where in Senegal's music scene Sam experienced parallels to another of his central aesthetic and political touchstones, Brazilian Tropicalia, in the sense of a "positivity, complexity and radicalism in art that was also
playful and joyous and wasn't necessarily part of a 'revolution' but seemed to be a form of innate radicalism". In tandem with the relative openness of Dakar's Islamic society - with the much more prominent role and presence of women in public and private life and the relaxed physicality and sensuality of the culture in general - Senegalese music offered a powerful counterpoint and feeling of promise for Egypt's own future. "The Big Mango" is one of the many nicknames for Cairo, but for Shalabi it also evokes the succour and sensuality of southern hemispheric music more generally, in this relation to broader socio-political movements.
MontrÉal remains Shalabi's home base and the city to which he briefly returned towards the end of 2012 to reconvene the troupe of players that have helped him realize his large-scale works under the Land Of Kush moniker. Working through The Big Mango score with
these local musicians culminated in two ecstatic live performances and a recording session at MontrÉal's Hotel2Tango studio. This third album by Land Of Kush is arguably the group's most focused and immediately satisfying.
For Shalabi, gender and Arab culture has been a central theme, one he took up explicitly on the previous Kush album Monogamy (2011), and which similarly drives The Big Mango, where once again a series of female vocalists drawn from MontrÉal's indie rock community anchor the work and convey what in most of the North African Arab world remains a
profoundly unrealized though burgeoning spirit of gender equality, participation, expression and liberation. This promise is at the heart of Shalabi's "love letter".
The Big Mango opens with a bubbling Fauvist stew of balafon, flute, electronics and vocalizations which abruptly segue into solo piano and saxophone improvisations - an introductory set of musical mating calls that invoke the album's deeper conceptual and formal preoccupations. The libidinal energy of rock n' roll is then re-situated in a heterodox Middle Eastern context as the album's centerpiece songs unfold: "The Pit", "Mobil Nil",
"Drift Beguine" and "The Big Mango" each marked by propulsive female vocal performances from Ariel Engle, Katie Moore, Elizabeth Anka Vajagic and Molly Sweeney respectively.
Underpinning each of these singers is some of Land Of Kush's s most melodically and rhythmically compelling music, conjuring a post-modern psychedelia that is truly sui generis. The band delivers the grooves and soloists unleash excursions more fluidly than ever; for many of these players, it's the third time around embracing Shalabi's music, getting inside the spirit of the score, and following his conduction. In combination with the peaking intensity and electricity of Sam's compositional vision, The Big Mango coheres, sparkles and soars: a distillation of the sonic trajectory Land Of Kush has been charting for the past six years.1. PaintedWhile every bit as sonically vitriolic as their past endeavors, Painted attempts to focus its energy rather than lash out blindly. Songs like "Greenland" and "It's The Water" still weigh in with bottom-heavy instrumentation, but lyrically look towards brighter horizons. Though the band seeks to close the emotional divide it basked in on their debut, the primary meaning behind New Distances couldn't be more pertinent to the band's sophomore album. The U.S. Department of Immigration recently denied entry to Cox, forcing the recruitment of temporary guitarist Mark Holcomb (Aeges, Undertow, Shift) for Narrow's 2011 tour with Helms Alee. While the global nature of the band already limited their opportunities for touring, this additional roadblock further exacerbated the difficulties of writing and recording an album with members spread across the United Stated and Europe.
Despite the difficulties of recording across two hemispheres, Painted sounds like a band locked into a singular vision. Matt Bayles (Mastodon, ISIS, Minus The Bear) recorded the album at Red Room Studios with Cox's guitar overdubs tracked by Wayne Pennell at Bunker Studios in Brentford, England during late night Skype sessions with the stateside members of the band. Due in part to the constraints of time and distance, Painted is a streamlined record. With eight songs clocking in at just over 27 minutes, the album wastes no time exorcising its demons. And while part of New Distances' allure stemmed from it's marriage of primal metallic hardcore with the effects-laden art rock approach of guitarists Cox and Frederiksen, Painted harnesses power from curtailing more of their experimental moments in favor of big meaty riffs and voracious tempos.1. Occult Architecture Vol. 1Meaning all things magick and supernatural, the root of the word occult is that which is hidden, concealed, beyond the limits of our minds. If this is occult, then the Occult Architecture of Moon Duo's fourth album - a psychedelic opus in two separate volumes released in 2017 - is an intricately woven hymn to the invisible structures found in the cycle of seasons and the journey of day into night, dark into light. Offering a cosmic glimpse into the hidden patterning embedded in everything, Occult Architecture reflects the harmonious duality of these light and dark energies through the Chinese theory of Yin and Yang. In Chinese, Yin means the shady side of the hill and is associated with the feminine, darkness, night, earth. Following this logic, Vol. 1 embraces and embodies Moon Duo's darker qualities - released appropriately, in the heart of winter in the Northern Hemisphere.1. The Death Set
