    Hurt & The Merciless

Hurt & The Merciless marks a musical culmination for The Heavy, a mesmerizing blend of their trademark rock'n'roll classicism and funk and soul grooves, with added sonic experimentation. Self-produced, the band's main aim when recording was to capture the powerful energy of their live show-that life-affirming spark of rock'n'roll when anything feels possible. The 12 track album features lead single Since You Been Gone, with its lolloping groove, plus the spiky garage-rock anthem What Happened To The Love? and is their strongest batch of songs to date.

    Bound To Happen

1969's Bound to Happen was the last-and, in many ways, most brilliant-collaboration between Soul singer William Bell and Stax label-mate Booker T. Jones. Jones produced and arranged the album, overdubbing many of the instruments himself, while the MGs and the Memphis Horns played backup. Features I Forgot to Be Your Lover, Bell's biggest hit under Stax. Available again on vinyl for the first time in 30+ years!

    Whatever Will Happen

I was walking to the post office a few months ago when I saw 5 unkempt
figures heading my way. As they got closer, I recognized these guys. They had
played at our gallery last month, fogged the windows up good. Captivated the
crowd with their impossibly balanced creation of modern and classic, a blend of
Steely Dan cool and General Public pop, Squeezish hooks and Aztec Camera
guitar flair. It was like a crash course in 60s pop, 70s avant-garde, 80s new wave
and 90s popkid charm, with that unmistakable Puget Sound flavor. They were iji.

Iji's a band projecting their own brand of pop, nudging the genre into the
comfort zone of a punk community, embracing a desire for rack-a-chack, ethereal
and naivist sounds often unexplored by contemporaries.

Back on the sidewalk, I asked them what they were doing back in town.
Apparently after the Team Love show the band had decided to go night swimming.
Oblivious to the magical, secluded moonlit respite where the river bends wide or
the lake meets the shallow cliff, iji wound up breaking into the local community
pool, immediately getting arrested by the local community cops, and spending the
night in the local community clink.    Now, rather than being out on tour in some
distant state or country spreading their transcendental party music, they had routed
themselves back up Hudson Valley way to appear in court and find that their
punishment was, essentially, all the cash in their merch box. A bummer; quickly
diverted by throwing together a few last minute shows and cruising on.

Shortly after this chance encounter Quarterbacks Dean came by the shop
and said he had heard the new iji album and did I want to give it a listen. I said
something like, fuck yeah, and that was that.

Zach Burba, the founder of iji, is what you might call a lifer. Iji is always
in a state of 'to be continued,' in the way that a journeyman is always and
perpetually transitioning into the master. They've put out numerous albums, singles,
cassettes, and splits over the past 10 years; toured coast to coast playing DIY
venues and houses where restrictions don't apply. This type of DIY pop is a
lifestyle; it's Kokopelli roaming the countryside sharing a song in exchange for a
roof and a bowl of soup.

On Whatever Will Happen, iji has whipped a notebook full of travel
poems into a full-length American Experimental Highway Pop Opus. The band's
eleventh or twelfth album is the first one recorded at Anacortes, Washington's The
Unknown Music Studio with a solid line-up, the Seattle underground music scene's
best players. Jake Jones and Curran Foster from Sick Sad World, Will Murdoch
from Pill Wonder, Evan Easthope from Neighbors, Erin Birgy of Mega Bog, plus a
handful of jazz horn players and inspired back-up singers. Whatever Will Happen
speeds past quiet beaches with soft-rock wind in the hair, through mountain passes
with windows-down-power-pop, into seedy cities with free-jazz flavor and shameless
    disco grooves.

The next time iji come to town, I'm going to take them up to the ridge and
show them a real swimming hole, something that's locals-only and worthy of their
greatness. And with that said, let's wrap this up by stating that Team Love is proud
to announce the release of Whatever Will Happen.

    Anything Could Happen

When The Replacements ended their 33-show reunion tour in June 2015, founding bassist Tommy Stinson walked away with his head held high. Armed with a pocketful of new songs and a clean slate, he holed up in his home studio in Hudson, NY and played solo tour dates with a group of A+ players/friends backing him, including Luther Dickinson, Frank Ferrer, Cat Popper, Steve Selvidge, and Joe "The Kid" Sirois. They had more fun than humans should be allowed to have, and over the next year and a half they pieced together a brand new record. A BAND record.

Never one to hog the spotlight, the only logical thing to do at this point was to reanimate 'Bash & Pop', the band he started immediately following The Replacements first split in 1991. Fat Possum Records quickly signed the band and will be releasing its unknowingly-long-awaited sophomore album, Anything Could Happen.

Optimism is infectious, and there can be few more optimistic statements than the ttitle of the new album from Dignan Porch: Nothing Bad Will Ever Happen. As you listen to the warm-hearted, weirdo pop within, as you're drawn into their world, you might be inclined to agree with them. Nothing Bad Will Ever Happen is Dignan Porch's second album, though in many way it's their first. 2010's debut, Tendrils, was written and recorded a solo concern by singer Joe Walsh. Here, he's joined by the full band, comprising brother Sam Walsh plus close friends Ben Goodwin, Hayley Akins and Stephen Keane.

Good Things Don't Happen Every Day

Like a lot of jazz organists, McGriff had strong roots in the blues. Here he teams up with Junior Parker to lay down some of those roots, mixed in with a good dose of soul. Along the way they find themselves in the funk, a later outgrowth of the blues and soul. Drownin On Dry Land brings the funk accentuated with some great drum playing by an uncredited musician on the liner notes. McGriff and Parker give a nice contemporary, soul sound to the classic Fats Domino tune Ain't That A Shame. It Ain't What'cha Got begins with a catchy organ riff by McGriff before going into a little vamp. Workin has a part in the middle that was looped up by Del for Pissin On Your Steps.--soulstrut.com

    Like It Never Happened

Since their debut album Taller Children dropped in 2009, Elizabeth & The Catapult have casually nestled themselves into our eardrums with captivating, floaty singles like You and Me. And years later, they've remained firmly planted there ever since.

Whether or not you're familiar with the New York band itself, chances are you've already heard them in commercials for brands like Google and Amazon. However, despite this mainstream success, it's a testament to front woman Elizabeth Ziman and the rest of the crew that they're able to stay decidedly on the indie side of the equation. They're DIY at its absolute finest. Ziman has always been one to do things on their own, whether it's self-producing her music or busking in the New York subways in order to teach herself how to play the guitar, and we love that about her.

Now all of these skills are coming into play on the band's third album, Like It Never Happened. [Like It Never Happened is] an irresistible pop gem, but don't be fooled but what's just on the surface. Ziman will woo you with her crystal-clear vocals, but with lyrics like don't go remembering love, the message is coming across loud and clear. She might want to forget the love affair, but one thing's for sure...a song this good won't be leaving our headphones anytime soon.

    Black Rhythm Happening

This, the second Blue Note album by Eddie Gale, was released in 1969 and includes jazz heavy weight Elvin Jones on drums and sax man Jimmy Lyons. This is a blend of soul jazz, free form freak outs and a gospel-influenced street choir, and it's suggested listening for fans of Sun Ra & Brother Ah, John Coltrane's late '60s LPs, and Ornette Coleman and Albert Ayler's more groove-oriented recordings. The original vinyl LPs go for big bucks on Ebay, and this is the first time this Blue Note album has ever been reissued. Remastered from the original master tapes with original artwork.

    Look Around

A Remastered, Double Album Anthology, Handpicked By The Band

Formed in the early '80s in Olympia, Washington by Calvin Johnson, Heather Lewis and Bret Lunsford, Beat Happening combined a primitive pop sound with a D.I.Y. attitude and inspired countless artists along the way. The community that arose around the band and their label, K Records, was in many ways, the sonic antithesis of their Seattle neighbors (and friends) but was no less influential. Look Around is a remastered, double album anthology, handpicked by the band. It's a great starting point for the uninitiated as well a refreshing reminder to those who caught the wave the first time around.

Tout Seul Dans La Forêt En Plein Jour, Avez-Vous Peur?

Translated as "Alone in the forest in the middle of the day, are you scared?" This is the latest musical project from Genevieve Castree, a native of Quebec who moved to the US in 2004, and has spent her time trying to follow what's happening in this country and all around her. The music is dark and insistent, yet still has some hope left in its vocal chords that gives it its spine. This is a record about present times, but may very well be about what has happened in the past and what might just happen again in the future. Are you scared? The entire record is sung in French, with a book of English translations and illustrations.

    One Breath

Domino is pleased to announce the release of One Breath, the new album from Anna Calvi. One Breath is a bold and confident record that begins an exciting new chapter in this uniquely talented artist's career.

Produced by John Congleton (St. Vincent, The Walkmen, Clinic) in Blackbox Studios, France and mixed in Dallas, Texas, USA, One Breath was written in a year and recorded over a few intense weeks.

One Breath is a more personal record than its Mercury and Brit nominated predecessor. Reflective and vulnerable, it strikes a balance between optimism and despair, beauty and ugliness. The fiery elements of Anna's debut remain, but One Breath is more instinctive and urgent, revealing a wider spectrum of textures and emotion.

"One Breath is the moment before you've got to open yourself up, and it's about how terrifying that is. It's scary and it's thrilling. It's also full of hope, because whatever has to happen hasn't happened yet." - Anna Calvi

    Your Arsenal

His fourth and finest solo album is, as the cover shot suggests, Morrisey's idea of hard rock. There's a gritty, glam feel to Mick Ronson's production (check the Ziggy Stardust cop on I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday), while the loud'n'rude riffs of new guitarist Boz Boorer banish memories of the Smiths. Best news: for once the songs focus on adult life, not the man's well-documented adolescence. --Jeff Bateman

    Armed Forces

    180 Gram Vinyl

Re-mastered from the original master tapes, this classic Elvis Costello album is now on 180 gram vinyl. Armed
Forces features the original U.S. cover and includes a 7" EP of "Live at Hollywood High." This album hit #10 on the Billboard Top 100 and highlights include "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace Love And Understanding?," "Oliver's Army" and "Accidents Will Happen."

Largely written on tour in hotel rooms and on the bus, Elvis Costellos Armed Forces takes personal politics to a new level. A supremely melodic and hook-laden record, the 1979 set is a showcase of scintillating keyboard lines, sharp guitar work, and the most cohesive arrangements of Costello and the Attractions career. In every way, this is a pop masterpiece, defined by hits such as Accidents Will Happen, Olivers Army, and the anthemic Whats So Funny Bout Peace Love and Understanding? You need this record.

While less musically intense than the preceding This Years Model, Armed Forces doesnt let up in the lyric department. Costellos narratives are loaded with paranoia, irony, bitterness, and scathing humor. Originally titled Emotional Fascism, the singers third consecutive masterpiece is inspired by billboard sign slogans, insular observations, and social behavior that Costello found applicable to his own situation. Olivers Army, Green Shirt, and Senior Service address systemic governmental control. Big Boys, Two Little Hitlers, and Accidents Will Happen also concern control and betrayalbut that of the interpersonal nature.

    Variations IV

    Pressed On Clear Vinyl

Anything can happen and often does. This is John Cage. A seminal example of indeterminate music from an icon on experimental sounds.

It could be argued that there is no more controversial figure in music history as avant-garde electronic composer John Cage. Perhaps best known for his composition 4'33, which consisted of Cage sitting at a piano for four-plus minutes of total silence, Cage was both loved and loathed in the 60s and 70s as a leading light in avant-garde music and as an entertainingly weird guy who used radios, televisions, live dancers and his own Adam's apple as instruments in his live performances. Cage's music blurred the line between music, performance art and visual art in a way that no other composer has before or since.

Cage's performances were often wild one-of-a-kind happenings, and the shows that make up the recording of Variations IV are no different. The fourth in a series of concerts that stretched the boundaries of what music was, IV was designed for a group of performers playing literally anything they could get their hands on. They were also encouraged, if they got bored playing, to do other activities in addition to the music. The score consisted of two circles and seven points on a transparent sheet, to be interpreted however the performers saw fit. The end result: a wild album of music-concrete that should sound familiar to fans of the Beatles' Revolution 9 -- no question Cage's composition influenced Lennon and Ono's experiments.

Modern Harmonic brings you this gorgeous reissue of Cage's masterpiece, pressed on clear vinyl and wrapped in restored artwork that captures the unique and strange beauty of this headphone classic. Join the avant-garde!

The combination of experimental, progressive music with shorter, more radio-friendly songs enabled the band to release singles from the album while keeping the story intact and the cuts Revolution Calling, Eyes of a Stranger and I Don't Believe in Love happen to be some of the best metal songs out there.

    Mama Tried

One of Merle Haggard's finest recordings, 1968's Mama Tried is comprised of a number of strong originals and several excellent covers. While Mama Tried, I'll Always Know and You'll Never Love Me Now all happen to be some of Haggard's most solid original offerings, it's his gritty and honest interpretations of songs like Little Ole Wine Drinker Me, In the Good Old Days (When Times Were Bad), Teach Me to Forget, Run 'Em Off and Too Many Bridges to Cross Over that help distinguish Mama Tried as perhaps the most quintessential Bakersfield-Sound album ever recorded.

    Brandt Brauer Frick: DJ-Kicks

There's a common thread that runs through all of Brandt Brauer Frick's music. It is this: interesting things happen at the interface of machine and hand-made music. The Berlin trio's 2010 album, 'You Make Me Real', fused techno and classical. The 2011 follow-up, 'Mr Machine', saw them go the whole classical-meets-club hog with a ten-piece ensemble playing dance music live. Then, earlier this year, came 'Miami', a darker, more song-based collection exploring the same man-machine ideas. The Berlin trio's installment of the DJ-Kicks series does the same thing with a mix. Not for them the algorithmic rigidity of cutting and pasting tracks together on Ableton. They recorded the mix in one day, out of hours at Berlin's legendary Watergate club, using only vinyl and dub plates. "We didn't want to record it in our studio or at home, mainly because we preferred an intense session with limited time," explains Paul Frick. "That feels more like a unique situation and it enforces the tension and the necessity to do it right. Because we mixed it live there are mistakes and flaws, some rougher transitions in there. We are not super technical DJs. We like it when you hear those imprecisions because it's human. It feels like someone is behind the mix, rather than a computer." After all the conceptualizing, perhaps most importantly of all, the end result is that rare thing: a dancefloor mix full of emotion. Interesting things happen when humans and machines meet.
