Cut At 33 1/3 RPM By Kevin Gray At Cohearent Audio From The Original Rudy Van Gelder Blue Note Master Tapes

Pressed On 180 Gram Virgin Vinyl LP By RTI

Top Quality Gatefold Packaging With Laminated Covers & High Quality Session Photos

In a word association game, the name "Hank Mobley" will often generate "Blue Note" and vice versa. While Mobley had a musical life beyond the Blue Note label including associations with Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and Miles Davis (the 1961 Quintet), it is for his Blue Note recordings that he rightfully most remembered. Mobley led 25 albums for Blue Note and appeared on over 30 others as a sideman. His consistency resulted in all of those recordings being recommended to hard bop collectors. Mobley's mastery of the style, his attractive tone, and his skill at writing songs that inspire memorable solos made him a perfect representative of the Blue Note sound. Even with his large number of great recordings, Workout is something special and a real standout. Joined by Grant Green, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones, Mobley creates brilliant statements on four of his best originals (including the soulful "Uh Huh" and "Greasin' Easy"), "The Best Things In Life Are Free" and "Three Coins In A Fountain." The passion in Mobley's playing is exciting and will surprise many. He takes wild chances that challenge the other all-stars, and he plays with a constant stream of creative ideas. Even collectors who own a dozen other Hank Mobley albums will have to get this version of Workout which, with its superb remastering, has never sounded better.

    Workout

During his stint with Miles Davis, Hank Mobley's four Blue Note  sessions with band mates Wynton Kelly and Paul Chambers are considered his finest and most lyrical work. One listen to Workout, and you'll understand why. This 1961 masterwork also features guitarist Grant Green and drummer Philly Joe Jones, who, along with the tenor saxophonist, weave what can truly be called hard-bop magic. Listeners will be hard-pressed to find a more illustrative example of musical finesse, creativity, and swing.

Part of Analogue Productions' incredible Blue Note reissue series, this pressing claims mastering from the original master tapes and cuttingat 45RPM by the infallible team of Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, which did the deed at Acoustech. Add in amazingly clean 180g vinyl pressed at RTI, numbered and limited quantities, and gorgeous reproduction of the cover art--itself a classic--and you have a can't-miss jazz classic made even better. Capuchin Swing

Analogue Productions' Blue Note and Nat King Cole Reissues WIN A Positive Feedback 2010 Brutus Award!

One of McLean's more underrated albums from a plethora of Blue Note releases, 1960's Capuchin Swing finds the bebop alto saxophonist in fine form on a mix of covers and originals. While McLean's future fascination with Ornette Coleman's free-form innovations can be sensed in some solos here, the majority of the album is in a classic hard bop vein. Like contemporaries Hank Mobley, Sonny Clark, and Lee Morgan, though, McLean doesn't just churn out pat jam-session fare, but comes up with consistently provocative charts and solos. Eschewing any ballad cuts, McLean focuses on mid- to fast-tempo swingers and blues. Standouts include originals like Francisco and Condition Blue and choice renditions of Just for Now and Don't Blame Me. McLean enlists a sparkling lineup of hard bop stars, including trumpeter Blue Mitchell, pianist Walter Bishop, Jr., bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Art Taylor. Mitchell particularly impresses, matching many of McLean's own inspired flights with his supple and progressive playing. Along with other fine Blue Note titles like Jackie's Bag and Bluesnik, Capuchin Swing makes for a great introduction to McLean's extensive catalog.-- Stephen Cook

Hank Mobley And His All Stars

Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio on 13 January 1957 for Blue Note, for this session tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley played five of his own compositions in an all star quintet line-up featuring Milt Jackson, Horace Silver, Doug Watkins and Art Blakey. These musicians were all big men on the NY jazz scene at the time and at the very top of their game, and it certainly shows on this outstanding example of late fifties hard bop.

After establishing himself as a star on the rise with the Miles Davis quintet, the Thelonious Monk quartet, and various Prestige recordings with Sonny Rollins, Hank Mobley, and Tadd Dameron, John Coltrane made his debut as a leader on this excellent self-titled 1957 release. The 6-song set finds the tenor sax giant joined by John Splawn (trumpet), Sahib Shihab (baritone sax), Mal Waldron (piano), Red Garland (piano), Paul Chambers (bass) and Al Heath (drums) on a pair of Trane's own compositions in Straight Street and Chronic Blues, alongside Cal Massey's Bakai and pop fare such as Violets for Your Furs, While My Lady Sleeps and Time Was.

Cut from the Original Analog Mono Master Tapes by Kevin Gray and Robert Pincus & Pressed at RTI

Numbered Limited Edition of Only 2500 Copies

Some of the greatest jazz musicians of all time have passed through Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers: Horace Silver, Hank Mobley, Kenny Dorham, Wayne Shorter and Donald Byrd, among many others. However brief their stay, working with the demanding and full-throttle drummer not only increased their visibility, but also their chops and interpretive capacity. Blakey's ability to drum up the best players in the game may have even eclipsed his superhuman ability to play drums.

Altoist Jackie McLean, trumpeter Bill Hardman, bassist Spanky deBrest, and pianist Sam Dockery join the fold here to along with Blakey deliver whole-bop goodness on five propulsive, fiery tracks. True to its title, this LP bops hard, with a ferocious swing, boundless energy and telepathic communication between players - especially Blakey and Hardman. Considering the rhythmic demands of Blakey's locomotive playing style, this was an incredible achievement.

Impex Records has cut this gorgeous, limited edition (2,500 pressings) 180-gram LP with the original analog mono master tapes and without computer processing of any kind. You hear all the vivacious interplay that occurred on that weekend in 1957 when Blakey and crew forged a bold new vision of muscular, funky jazz. This is music that still resonates over 50 years later. Not to be missed!

Remastered on 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl!

After John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderly left the 'quintet', Miles Davis was forced to search for new qualified musicians. He found them in Hank Mobley, Wynton Kelly, Jimmy Cobb and Paul Chambers. In 1961, just two years after recording Kind Of Blue, Miles and his new line up started recording energetically and finished Someday My Prince Will Come after only three days.

This album is a cross-over from Kind Of Blue, which is known for the typical Miles Davis-tunes, to traditional pop-standards such as the eponymous title track from Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs.

As much as I'd love to relay all kinds of anecdotes about the challenges Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray encounter during the mastering sessions, I witness none. These boys know the sound of the facility and the Van Gelder masters like the backs of their handsBack home a month later, I unpack some test pressings Chad Kassem has sent meI hear the most realistic-sounding drums ever reproduced by my system. It's as though I'm sitting at the point of creation, experiencing the same high that brought such gifted musicians together as one. Steve Hoffman, Kevin Gray, Chad Kassem, and Don MacInnis have done Rudy Van Gelder and his Blue Note artists proud. Jason Victor Serinus, Stereophile, April 2008

Hank Mobley was a perfect artist for Blue Note in the 1960s. On this LP, which is a straight reissue of the 1965 session, Mobley is joined by trumpeter Lee Morgan, trombonist Curtis Fuller, pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Bob Cranshaw and drummer Billy Higgins (a typically remarkable Blue Note lineup) for the infectious title cut, three other lesser-known but superior originals, plus Wayne Shorter's Venus Di Mildew.

This is one of the best-known Hank Mobley recordings, and for good reason. Although none of his four originals (Workout, Uh Huh, Smokin', Greasin' Easy) caught on, the fine saxophonist is in top form. He jams on the four tunes, plus The Best Things in Life Are Free, with an all-star quintet of young modernists -- guitarist Grant Green, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones -- and shows that he was a much stronger player than his then-current boss Miles Davis seemed to think.

The Peckin' Time session was recorded February 9, 1958 (the LP was issued a year later) and came in the midst of what was a period of whirlwind creativity for Mobley, who recorded work for the Savoy and Prestige imprints as well as six full albums for Blue Note. For this session, Mobley found himself working with a young Lee Morgan on trumpet and in front of a fluid rhythm section that included pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Charlie Persip, and it's solid stuff, bright and always energetic.

Mobley, who continued to evolve into a more advanced player throughout the 1960s, fits right in with such adventurous players as altoist James Spaulding, trumpeter Lee Morgan (with whom Mobley recorded frequently), pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Reggie Workman and drummer Billy Higgins. The inclusion of Kiane Zawadi on euphonium and Howard Johnson on tuba adds a lot of color to this memorable outing.

    Thinking of Home (Awaiting Repress)

For what would be his final of over 20 Blue Note albums, tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley uses a sextet that also includes trumpeter Woody Shaw, the obscure guitarist Eddie Diehl, pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Mickey Bass, and drummer Leroy Williams for a typically challenging set of advanced hard bop music. For the first and only time in his career, Mobley recorded a Suite (consisting of Thinking of Home, The Flight, and Home at Last); the remainder of the set has three of his other attractive originals plus Mickey Bass' Gayle's Groove. This music was not released for the first time until 1980. It is only fitting that Hank Mobley would record one of the last worthwhile Blue Note albums before its artistic collapse (it would not be revived until the 1980s) for his consistent output helped define the label's sound in the 1960s. Mobley's excellent playing and the adventurous solos of Woody Shaw make this hard-to-find LP (his last as a leader) one to hunt for.
