    Alien Lanes

Originally released in 1995 on Matador Records, their first for the label, Alien Lanes is the 8th overall full-length from lo-fi legends Guided By Voices. One of the band's most popular, Alien Lanes makes an art out of pairing anthemic hooks with muscular and melodic rock 'n' roll guitars, almost exclusively accomplished here in brief blazes of brilliance and beauty.

    More Parts Per Million

The Thermals celebrate their 10-year anniversary by reissuing their three Sub Pop albums on vinyl. More Parts Per Million is the band's debut album, originally released by Sub Pop on March 4th, 2003. The Thermals were created in 2002 by singer Hutch Harris in his Portland-area kitchen. By that summer, they was a rock band in the flesh, with Kathy Foster on bass, Jordan Hudson on Drums and Kind of Like Spitting's Ben Barnett on the guitar. The Thermals play with a joyous frenzy not unlike the idiosyncratic guitar driven indie-punk of the Wedding Present, with lyrics spewed forth from the same oblique etherland as Guided By Voices. More Parts Per Million has sold over 12,000 copies, and the vinyl has been out of print for years. Chris Walla of Death Cab For Cutie mixed the album at The Hall of Justice studio in Seattle, WA.

Under The Bushes Under The Stars

Under The Bushes Under The Stars is made up of unforgettable riffs, infectious vocal melodies, and little else - hinting at stadium-sized ambitions while keeping the songs themselves human-sized. By remaining tethered to the lo-fi aesthetic but thinking big, Under The Bushes, Under The Stars is propelled by a sense of tension that the band hasn't really explored
    since.

    -Stereogum

In November 1995 Guided By Voices handed in their darkest and most obscure record to date. The 60-odd songs the band had recorded in 24-track studios had all been scrapped. Chief Robert Pollard was adamant about releasing a home-taped album "as is, no compromises, man,"; citing his dissatisfaction with the hi-fi material.

Then Bob changed his mind and went into another 24-track studio and banged out the majority of the songs on Under The Bushes Under The Stars in two days. The results are Guided By Voices' clearest and most ecstatic album to date. A fabulous introductory record for new fans confused by the amount of Guided By Voices catalog in the racks, Under The Bushes also contains new songs to trigger synapses in their devoted core audience.

Doug Gillard is a guitarist's guitar player. Over the past two decades he's lent his considerable talents to a huge array of recordings, and has been an integral member of Guided By Voices, Nada Surf, Death Of Samantha, Richard Bunkner's band, Cobra Verde, and others. His technical prowess and creative, angular melodies have influenced a generation of indie rockers. Gillard sings and plays nearly every note on Parade On (with the exception of drums and occasional backing vocals), and, although the songs range from aggressive punky New Wave to melodic 70s influenced psych, this is assuredly a pop record that should appeal to fans of all his other outfits.

    Master Of My Make Believe

Santigold is Santi White: an artist whose perseverance relies on invention, a champion who survives off her own skill and faith. She is a major muse watched by the inspired world, an in categorical performer who collapses time and genre with one hand guided by tradition, while the other hand carves out a shining future. Santigold is neither calm nor mayhem, but from her lungs burst every color in between.

After four years of hide and seek in which blogs blew up at the sudden release of any track with her name attached to it, Santigold returns in a moment of global aggression and vulnerability. Honing in on the hyper-media cult of personality, in her unmistakable voice she asks the listener: Into what fantasy do you hurl yourself as you gaze into the glow of your machine? The answer to this question is central to what drives Master of My Make-Believe, her latest work to be released this spring on Atlantic Records.

As an antidote against self-celebratory status updates in a climate where the focus on fame outweighs a days emotions, Master of My Make-Believe summons pop culture zombies back to life. This is sound proof of an artist on a diligent journey, measuring the power of individual mood against social clamor. Sifting through a wondrous wreckage of airplay, upload, and anguish, Santigolds talent lies in filtering reality through freakdom, to find in desire a timeless spark of raw magic.

Anyone caught referring to Master of My Make-Believe as a sophomore effort is only half right. Though relatively fresh as Santigold, Santi Whites history of writing, production, and performance stretch beyond the centurys flip. Her collaboration with the industrys most recognized and respected talent is something continuous and wide reaching, making her musical lineage all the much richer. Declared Best Breakthrough Artist by NME in 2008 and Pop Music Vanguard by ASCAP in 2009, the voice that defines Santigold is as complex as the faces that pack a subway car, as intimate and honest as conversation on a weathered stoop.

Through chopped pianos, the clink of glass bottles, and the peaking blast of motorcycle engines, Master of My Make-Believe accounts for 21st century details of life from the hearts center to the minds periphery. In her pen and in her voice, the breadth of substance presented in Santigolds newest songs is immediate and complex. There are valleys here wherein the drudge of daily living is met with caution and confronted by mortality, but underneath it all there is the celebration of each persons power and vision to fight toward what they believe. Consider this your invitation.

    Rough Guide To Barbecue Bob

Lovingly Remastered Using Pioneering Restoration Techniques

Very few names in the history of the blues capture the imagination quite like that of Barbecue Bob. Don't be fooled by the quirky pseudonym and gimmicky publicity photograph of him posing in his chef's whites with guitar in hand, as he was an incredibly influential figure whose records helped pave the way for many of the important bluesmen that followed.

One of the unsung heroes of the Piedmont blues style, Robert Hicks aka Barbecue Bob recorded over sixty sides for Columbia Records and became one of the best-selling artists on their 'race series', outsold only by Bessie Smith, Ethel Waters and Blind Willie Johnson. With his original and witty compositions he was one of the real pioneers of the Atlanta blues scene of the time, but his career was tragically ended by his death from pneumonia at the age of just 29.

Born in Walnut Grove, Georgia to a family of sharecroppers, Hicks learned to play the guitar from his brother Charley and Savannah 'Dip' Weaver, the mother of his friend Curley Weaver. He teamed up with Charley, Curley and harmonica player Eddie Mapp to perform at dances, parties and picnics in the Atlanta area. After leaving the group in 1926, Hicks became a chef in a barbecue joint where he would cook, serve and sing to the customers. He soon became something of a local celebrity and was noticed by a talent scout from Columbia Records, who gave him the opportunity to record under the catchy title of Barbecue Bob.

Characterized by a heavy percussive guitar style, he often used a bottleneck and played with a frailing technique that is more often associated with the claw hammer banjo. His twelve string guitar gave a rich accompaniment to his warm nasal singing voice which, compared to the morbid and foreboding songs of the Delta blues, created a vibe which was jaunty and upbeat. With a huge repertoire of songs ranging from hokum to slow blues and spirituals to traditional songster tunes, his music is imbued with a special warmth typical to the East Coast blues.

Even from the opening few measures of his very first record Barbecue Blues, Hicks signature sound of a bright and trebly twelve string guitar combined with his expressive voice is instantly accessible and almost 'pop' sounding in comparison with other blues singers of the time. His debut song was a huge success and led to a prolific recording career over the next four years when, it is said, he lived fast and enjoyed the high life. Hicks frequently recorded with his brother Charley, who was known as Laughing Charley Lincoln, and would later record several sides in 1930 with Buddy Moss and Curley Weaver as the Georgia Cotton Pickers.

Largely due to his life being tragically cut short in 1931, his music has been sadly overlooked and has therefore not received the respect proffered to other East coast players such as Blind Willie McTell and Buddy Moss. He was however a true innovator in his time, and this compilation gives proof that his music is undoubtedly some of the most engaging early blues that you are likely to hear.

These Are The Days Gone By

MOTEL BEDS are a rock & roll band from Dayton, Ohio-a delightfully detached underdog city nestled in the heart of The Heartland. Seasoned veterans, Beds have worked alongside local advocates Kelley Deal (Deal duets on the lusciously hushed "Tropics of the Sand") and Robert Pollard (guitarist Derl Robbins records Guided By Voices). Allies aside, when it comes to rock & roll, Motel Beds speak for themselves. "These Are the Days Gone By" reveals the fruits of Beds' labor these latter years. The album is an electrifying collection of "hits," remastered by Carl Saff (GBV, Dinosaur Jr., etc.) and featuring added bass parts by new(est) member and local ace Tod Weidner. Over a 12-song cycle, the proficiency with which Tommy Cooper and P.J. Paslosky-Motel Beds' core songwriting duo-augment a solid hook is set on display.

    Lost Voice

Toni Harper's two original albums Toni (1956) and Lady Lonely (1959).

Toni Harper's childhood was made of the magic any aspiring adult artist would kill for: a platinum record, a performance at Carnegie Hall, evenings spent sharing a stage with such performers as Cab Calloway, and invitations to appear on television with Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Milton Berle, and Ed Sullivan. And all of the magic unfolded before she'd turned 12 years old.

The jazz vocalist, who now goes by the name Toni Dunlap, got her big break in 1945 when she went up against a couple hundred other kids at an audition held by choreographer Nick Castle. Harper, who had been a dance student of Maceo Anderson, passed muster as far as her dancing, but when she sang Waitin' for the Train to Come In, she had the audition sewn up on the spot. Castle cast her in his production of Christmas Follies, which was staged at Los Angeles' Wilshire Ebell Theatre. Harper drew enthusiastic reviews and went on to earn a platinum record when she was eight years old with Candy Store Blues.

Harper paired with Herb Jeffries for You're Too Tall 'n' I'm Too Small, the number for which she later paired live with Calloway at Los Angeles' Million Dollar Theatre. Television beckoned the young singer and she was a guest on numerous programs, among them Sullivan's weekly variety show. When she wasn't appearing on television, she was singing at numerous New York hot spots that included the Apollo, the Strand, and the Paramount. At the age of 11, Harper topped it all off by singing at Carnegie Hall.

Like many child stars, Harper's career slowed down as she began to mature. As a teenager, she was too old for the childhood image that had given her a great start, but too young to effectively take on a more adult image. She attended high school in Los Angeles, involving herself in such extracurricular activities as drama, choir, and the glee club. She continued to take professional singing jobs during the school's summer break. Having completed high school in the mid-'50s, and still hampered by her youth, she sang for the teenaged record-buying public. For a young woman of her age, One Hamburger to Go was more acceptable in the public eye than any of the more sophisticated songs that she would record in later years, such as Love for Sale.

The vocalist got her chance to sing the more adult songs when she recorded for Verve. In addition to Love for Sale, Harper recorded such songs as I Could Write a Book and Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered. Backing Harper on her self-titled first recording for Verve were pianist Oscar Peterson, drummer Alvin Stoller, guitarist Herb Ellis, and bassist Ray Brown. The vocalist later signed with RCA Victor, recording for the label for about four years and ending in 1963. Harper quit the business in 1966 after devoting more than 20 years to her singing career.

Produced by Simpson, A Sailor's Guide To Earth was written-beginning to end-as a letter to his first child who arrived during the summer of 2014 and features eight original songs as well as a rendition of Nirvana's In Bloom.

Recorded primarily at Nashville's The Butcher Shoppe, Simpson was joined in the studio by Grammy Award-winning engineer David Ferguson (Johnny Cash, John Prine, Cowboy Jack Clement) and assistant engineer Sean Sullivan. Along with members of his touring band, the album features Dave Roe on bass, Dan Dugmore on steel guitar, Dougie Wilkinson on bagpipes, Garo Yellin and Arthur Cook on cello, Jonathan Dinklage and Whitney LaGrange on violin and special guests The Dap-Kings.

A Sailor's Guide To Earth is Simpson's third full-length album and follows his break-through, Grammy-nominated 2014 release, Metamodern Sounds In Country Music. Beloved by critics and fans, the record was featured on year-end best of lists at The New York Times, Rolling Stone, the Village Voices' Pazz and Jop, Rolling Stone Country, NPR Music, American Songwriter, Stereogum, the Los Angeles Times, KCRW, Pitchfork, The Washington Post and many others.

    Pacer

The one and only full length from Kim Deal's post-Pixes and Breeders group, released in 1995. Though The Amps were originally intended to be a solo project for Deal, they quickly developed into a full fledged band, recording tunes that were slated to be part of the 3rd, never recorded, Breeders' album. Sloppy, raucous, and life-affirming rock and roll that owes more than a little to their fellow Dayton-ites Guided By Voices, Pacer is as good or better as any of the Breeders' releases. The recording sessions with Guided By Voices producer, Todd Tobias, lasting less than two weeks in the freezing Northeast Ohio cold, showed the band's ability to work at a breakneck pace with pinpoint accuracy and culminated in the fifteen-song monolith release Magic Windows, Magic Night. Blending lo-fi cassette performances, urban NYC field recordings and tape samples with baroque orchestration and Tobias' high-fi analog indie production, Magic Windows, Magic Nights clamors with the noise of a band firing on all cylinders. Five's melodic songwriting often veers from languid to raging, and eclipses the band's 2008 Cassette debut, with tightened Mascis-style guitar melodies and Brian Wilson-style pop concision, while the gunfire drumming of Sustarsic and polytoned sub-frequencies of Shue coalese into a heavy slamming machine. Magic Windows, Magic Nights showcases a band who know the meaning of impermanence and transition, and know how to bridge the gap between oblivion and survival.

    Enter

Russian Circles was formed in Chicago in 2004 by guitarist Mike Sullivan and drummer Dave Turncrantz. The trio's 2006 debut, Enter, quickly established the band amongst heavy instruments peers. With the addition of former Botch and These Arms Are Snakes bassist Brian Cook on their second album, Station, Russian Circles solidified its lineup. To date the band has released 5 critically-praised albums and continues to headline tours worldwide. In celebration of Russian Circles' 10th anniversary, Sargent House is proud to announce a re-issue of the band's critically acclaimed debut full length, 2006's Enter. Recorded over the course of five quick days with Greg Norman (Guided By Voices, Pelican, Neurosis) at the renowned Electrical Audio Studios in Chicago, Enter contains only six tracks, but they pack a lot into them - the album clocks in at 44 minutes. Each song flows into the next as if the record were one single composition in six movements.

    Keel Her

Known for her prolific songwriting and soundcloud posting Rose Keeler-Schffelers debut album features eighteen powerfully but economically packed tracks, cherry picked from her vast repertoire. Keel Hers songs are intimate vignettes drawn from Roses own experiences delivered in a chatty, honest and delightfully conversational manner. Guitars and synths vie for melodic prominence over vast swathes of fuzz and feedback, where Roses indecipherable vocals swim amongst buzzing melodies, swampy reverb and broken beats. Although much of her sound and aesthetic harks back to 90s slacker culture, the variety of styles she has absorbed makes it harder to specifically pinpoint her sound. Veering sonically from Beat Happening to Ariel Pink, Wavves to Bikini Kill, Real Estate to Guided By Voices and all the way back again, it wasnt long before her bedroom pop reached the ears of home recording supremo R. Stevie Moore. The R Stevie Moore collaboration started when Rose wrote a song for him called Robert. He was won over and they recorded the double A-side single Boner Hit/With Me Tonight. Rose invited Moore to remix the album track I'd Be Your Slave, which also sees him playing bass. Having grown up in Winchester, Rose Keeler-Schffeler began writing and recording in her bedroom at an early age and for over a year posted tracks online at an alarming rate. Now residing in Brighton, she remains blissfully unconcerned with glossy production values, clichd lyrics and formulaic hooks and instead taps in to seemingly bottomless well of creativity on her own terms.

    The Big Come Up

2002 was a hell of a year for The Black Keys, the minimalist two-man blues-rock outfit from Akron, Ohio. They released their debut album The Big Come-Up on the tiny Alive label that year and garnered barely-contained raves in Rolling Stone, Spin, The Village Voice and MOJO. One listen to The Big Come Up, a startling raw slab of juke-joint blues, validates the band's rapid ascent from playing for no money on the bottom of the bill at Cleveland's Beachland Tavern to selling out blistering headline dates and being invited to open for the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and elder Ohio statesmen Guided By Voices. Their vintage concoction of Dan Auerbach's genuinely fine, powerful blues vocals and busy reverb soaked guitar riffing mixed with Patrick Carney's earthy drumming is what makes The Big Come Up a cool and raunchy electric blues record with a vigor and imagination that's way fresher than any standard bar band blues-rockers with slicker execution and pencient for blues cliches. Cody

Cody isn't an album that changed everything for Joyce Manor, but Joyce Manor had to change a bit to make their album Cody. Since the release of their 2014 Epitaph debut Never Hungover Again, guitarist and singer Barry Johnson has taught himself the meditation techniques championed by the Beatles and director David Lynch, and he found he was suddenly wide open. Before, songs were labor; now they were revelations, appearing almost fully formed in his head before he had time to even catch them on a voicemail to himself.

For Cody, the band camped out in the studio for two months with producer Rob Schnapf, credited on classics by Elliott Smith, Guided By Voices, Saves The Day and Rancid, all in the Joyce Manor record collections, of course. With Schnapf's help, they'd explore deeper arrangements, new pre-production techniques, and different ways of working both together and with someone else. Johnson says, "It was the first time we really used the studio to our advantage. I felt like I could get a better grasp on what we could do. We always recorded like a punk band-go in and lay 'em down! Just get good takes! And this time we tried a lot more."

For Cody, they added new drummer Jeff Enzor to the band alongside bassist Matt Ebert and guitarist Chase Knobbe. With Rob Schnapf's able help as a de facto fifth member of the band, Joyce Manor found itself bristling with inspiration. Now more than ever, says Johnson, he felt he could trust himself and his bandmates to take the risks to make the music they wanted to make. The result is a record that dares to be humble, intimate and unapologetically human.

    Heavy Reverie

Buffalo Killers are a rock band
that was formed in Cincinnati, Ohio in 2006. Shortly after,
they began gigging throughout Ohio and recorded a
    five-song demo which they
    sent out to various record
labels. Less than a week later
the band received a call from
    Alive Records; "The label
    liked the recordings so much
    that they wanted to release
    them as they were", according
    to bassist Zach Gabbard. Alive
    Records subsequently signed
Buffalo Killers, who recorded five more songs to round out their debut self-titled album which
was released in October 2006. That album drew the attention of Chris
Robinson of The Black Crowes who invited the band to open a string of
dates for The Black Crowes in 2007. While on tour, Buffalo Killers wrote
half of what would become the album Let it Ride.

Following the tour, the band went in to the studio with Black Keys
vocalist/guitarist Dan Auerbach who produced the album in his Akron,
OH studio. The recording session took "only a few days", according to
Auerbach, who downplayed his role in making the album. "These are
the kind of guys that don't need a lot of help when it comes to making
records or sparking their imagination." Auerbach felt his most important contribution was in capturing "the raw live sound of this band."
After completion of the album Buffalo Killers were asked to go on tour
with The Black Keys. During this tour they came upon a fan's bootleg
of their performance and they decided to include it as a bonus live CD
in a limited edition vinyl pressing of the album. Another tour opening
for The Black Crowes would follow in November 2008. In 2011, Buffalo
Killers were featured on a Guided by Voices tribute album where they
performed the track Scalding Creek with Kelley Deal of The Breeders.
Other artists on that album included The Flaming Lips, Of Montreal,
    and Dinosaur Jr.

Buffalo Killers released their third studio album appropriately titled
3 featuring the single Circle Day. The first thousand vinyl copies were
released half on blue vinyl and half on purple. They followed that record
up with Dig Sow Love Grow and the six song EP Ohio Grass. In 2013,
the band signed to Sun Pedal Recordings and appeared at the Bunbury
Music Festival in Cincinnati, OH with Fun, Teagan & Sara, Walk the
Moon, and more. Their fifth studio album was recorded in Cleveland,
OH at Crushtone Studios with producer Jim Wirt (Incubus, Fiona Apple) and will be released via Sun Pedal Recordings in 2014.
