    Shields

Shields is the fourth and most anticipated Grizzly Bear album to date. After long spans of shows headlining (as well as supporting Radiohead, Feist,
Wilco and Paul Simon), Grizzly Bear's members Chris Bear, Ed Droste, Daniel Rossen and Chris Taylor lived their own lives. Trips were taken, and friendships were restored; families were visited, and solo projects were finished. The potential energy gathered in tour vans and buses, in studios
and on stages for years was finally released, giving the individual band's pieces the chance to recover and, after a year, return to being Grizzly Bear.

The whole band wrote songs together, taking each other's ideas and extending them. And for the first time, they tended to move forward only with the
songs that were most open to true quartet collaboration. Asked which tunes on Shields belong to which songwriter, every member balks and explains
that, for the first time, these are actually full-band numbers. Both in process and product, this is Grizzly Bear as they've never been.

"This has a different energy behind it," concludes Droste. "Veckatimest was a little more of a polite album; the desire to keep the vocals smooth might have kept a little distance between us and the audience. This one feels a bit more rough and exposed, so that on Shields, everything speaks for itself."

Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields share an affinity for the eerie. Their result of their musical collaboration is a striking collection of doo-wop songs about werewolves, haunting melodies telling tales of zombies with broken hearts, and children singing the joys and pains of being alive, or being dead. In Ear Park

Department of Eagles began in 2000, when Fred Nicolaus and Daniel Rossen became roommates at New York University. The two began making music together, collecting samples and turning them into songs using pirated software and a microphone borrowed from their neighbor Chris Taylor (who, years later, would become Daniel's bandmate in Grizzly Bear and DoE's producer/engineer). In 2004 Daniel joined the group Grizzly Bear as a singer, guitarist and songwriter. He began touring with the band, and brought a number of songs to their critically acclaimed sophomore album Yellow House and follow-up EP Friend. Over the years, stealing time on weekends and between tours, they slowly accumulated bits and pieces, and by late 2007 an album had begun taking shape. In December, Department of Eagles began work on its second album, In Ear Park. Chris Taylor acted as producer/engineer and also played electric bass and horns. Chris Bear, Grizzly Bear's drummer, also contributed heavily to the album. In Ear Park is a colorful and expansive album, an intimate and personal collection of songs; much of the material that Daniel Rossen brought to In Ear Park draws on memories from his childhood, especially those relating to his father, who passed away in 2007 and to whom the album is dedicated. Many of Fred's contributions relate to similar themes of nostalgia and mortality, giving the album at times an elegiac feel. Ear Park is full of intimate moments, lush production and concise songwriting.

    Person To Person

An album of dense pop that justifies the band's place among top songsmithing contemporaries like Cass McCombs and James Mercer, as well as Bowie. But the band is able to bypass the songwriter label by delivering a much more collective sound. African high-life guitars are countered with new wave wash; the sound of a band daring to keep its palette open to most any influence, from U2 to The Feelies. Foreign Born deliver the soundtrack for the backyard BBQ of the ages. Extensive touring with Rogue Wave and Grizzly Bear.

    Beyond Wilderness

Beyond Wilderness is the debut full-length from Vancouver four-piece Gold & Youth, available May 14, 2013.

The album was produced and recorded by Colin Stewart (Black Mountain, New Pornographers, Dan Mangan) and mixed by Gareth Jones (Depeche Mode, Interpol, Grizzly Bear).

Gold & Youth is Matthew Lyall, Murray Mckenzie, Jeff Mitchelmore and Louise Burns.

Beyond Wilderness is built with dark, expansive synthetic textures, punctuated by programmed drums and interwoven with melancholy vocals, detuned synth melodies and understated guitars.

The result is an album with varied sounds, ranging from the cold, industrial sounds of Depeche Mode to the tenderness of Avalon-era Roxy Music.

    After The End

First gaining notoriety with the LPs Children of Desire' (2012),
which Pitchfork hailed for its "glistening and emotive, ear-bleeding noise
pop", and then Totale Nite (2013), which NME likened to "a
cultural jump-start" , Merchandise continue their ascent with their
highly-anticipated new album, After The End out on 4AD.

Drawing from too many places to be classified punk, they've certainly
been informed by it's ethics, earning all they've achieved. Still self-recording and producing their music, this time over a six month period
in the house they share in Tampa, After The End is a real achievement in
showing what bands can achieve themselves. The only outside influence
this time came when they enlisted mixing help from Gareth Jones, the
man famed for his work on Depeche Mode's Berlin Trilogy of 'Construction Time Again,' 'Some Great Reward,' and 'Black Celebration,' and
more recently Interpol, These New Puritans and Grizzly Bear.

Jonsi has spent more than a decade writing epic compositions with Sigur Ros, creating some of the finest, most acclaimed albums of the last ten years. The choice to make an album of solo recordings came together as a solution to a backlog of songs Jonsi had written that didn't seem to fit within the Sigur Ros context. Go is a different beast entirely. Ecstatic, dramatic and alive, it features Jonsi's signature vocals throughout, with the majority of the songs sung in English.

Not a straight ahead pop record, nor rock, folk, ambient or electronic, it encompasses all of these to create an expansive musical palette that's been brought to life by Jonsi alongside a number of free-spirited collaborators. Chief among these is Nico Muhly, the Philip Glass protege who is renowned for his work with Bjork, Antony & The Johnsons, Bonnie Prince Billy and Grizzly Bear. Also in the mix is the percussive genius of Samuli Kosminen, whose original drumming powers many of the songs along so you have a sonic landscape that bears little relation to anything else around today, yet explodes from the speakers with sheer happiness and wonder, wide-eyed and eager to be heard. The album was recorded in Iceland and Connecticut, was co-produced by Jonsi, Alex Somers and Peter Katis (The National, Interpol) and was mixed by Tom Elmhirst in London.

Jamie Lidell is a genuinely restless soul. He broke out of small-town England and has been a nomad ever since. His constant desire to progress leaping and stumbling towards new discoveries has defined his musical journey so far; and there's no sign of it fading away. Recorded in Los Angeles, New York and Canada, Compass is his most eclectic album yet. Songs shift, chop, change and mutate genres and forms before our very ears. It's got funk in spades; the jaw-dropping power of the vocals is stronger than ever; it rocks, it pops, it's sweet, angry, hard, soulful and soft, often within the span of a single track. It's the restless album that finally matches the soul of its creator. Jamie's fellow conspirators on Compass include Beck, Feist, Gonzales, Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear and Pat Sansone of Wilco. Musically and lyrically this is very much a Jamie Lidell production reflecting not only his exhilarating, diverse tastes, but also a year of change, love, longing and arrival at a new place.

New York was wearing on Kyle Wilson, lead singer & songwriter for the Brooklyn-based quintet Milagres. So he took off, away from the city and his band and his issues all the way to the coldest, most remote part of British Columbia where he could get some space and breathe. Upon his return to NYC, Wilson drafted Fraser McCulloch (bass, backing vocals, keys) into his new vision of Milagres, sharing with him the arrangements that he dreamt of while recovering from his injury sustained while in British Columbia. These demos were then refined with the addition of Eric Schwortz (guitar, backing vocals, percussion), Chris Brazee (piano/keys) and Steven Leventhal (drums, percussion), evolving into what would become the new group's first LP, Glowing Mouth.

The musical scope of the album is big and due to the piano-based melodies and soaring falsettos, early press has compared the band to artists as diverse as Grizzly Bear and Prince, demonstrating the wide breadth of Milagres material. The first single, Glowing Mouth, is a slow-burner made for dancing close on a hot summer night, whereas Here To Stay has a keyboard hook that won't let you sleep. Kyle Wilson has a knack for writing dreamy story songs that also pack a punch in both chorus and melody. Songs like Gentle Beast and Gone suck you in and then haunt you for days afterwards this is an album that stays with you.

    Rapprocher

Brooklynite Elizabeth Harper's first musical offerings appeared in the form of personal singer/songwriter fare, her airy vocals paired only with quiet strums of acoustic guitar. But having a long-held desire to make electronic music, Harper recruited producers Mark Richardson and Scott Rosenthal to assist in achieving her desired sound, and electro-pop outfit Class Actress was born. The trio wasted no time in assembling their Journal of Ardency EP, which Grizzly Bear's Chris Taylor released on his Terrible Records imprint in early 2010. The five songs circulated widely, garnering acclaim and comparisons to Human League, Depeche Mode, and early Madonna at each music journal stop.

Now settled in with the folks at Carpark, Harper and co. put forth their debut long-player, Rapprocher. The album sees her playing a similar part to Journal's playful lovelorn diva, but it pushes the EP's proto-electro revisionism into new directions. Tracks like Love Me Like You Used To and Hanging On swaddle the record's heavy disco beats in diaphanous sheets of delay, and the bouncing bass of Weekend make it a prime candidate for a feel-good summer hit. Harper remains the force that binds the songs into a cohesive statement, her winking coo darting about in the deep drums and lofty arpeggios, and her passion - backed mostly with electronics - summons thoughts of Yaz's Alison Moyet. In concurrence with the title (rapprocheris French for bring closer), the candid, sincere lyrics meld with the atmosphere, enveloping the listener into Class Actress's world of 21st century romanticism.

Vinyl comes with digital download card - remixs from the CD version included on download card too! Los Angeles resident Jimmy Tamborello records, releases and occasionally performs music under the name Dntel. In 2007, we at Sub Pop released the Dntel album Dumb Luck which included contributions from a whole raft of talented people too numerous to list here (a short version of that list would include members of Grizzly Bear, Rilo Kiley, Bright Eyes, and Arthur & Yu). And at the end of 2010, we released a pair of companion EPs by Dntel, entitled After Parties 1 and After Parties 2. Together these two EPs total eight tracks, all of them instrumental, and featuring (to the best of our knowledge) a list of guest contributors numbering exactly zero.

Back in 2001, we did not release the Dntel album Life Is Full of Possibilities. This album was originally released by the Plug Research label, and because we've always secretly wished we'd put it out back then, we're going to release an expanded, re-mastered version of the album to mark its ten-year anniversary.

    St. Vincent

Annie Clark, better known by her stage name, St. Vincent, is an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. She began her music career as a
member of The Polyphonic Spress and was also part of Sufjan Stevens' touring band before forming her own band in 2006. Annie currently resides in
    Manhattan.

Her debut album was Marry Me, and was followed by Actor (2009). Her third album Strange Mercy was released on September 13, 2011.
Clark has opened shows for such acts as Television, Arcade Fire, Andrew Bird, Jolie Holland, John Vanderslice, Death Cab for Cutie and Grizzly Bear.

Teased late last year in a series of cryptic status updates, the forthcoming self-titled album from St. Vincent is one of the most anticipated of 2014.

The album was produced by John Congleton and features Dap-Kings drummer Homer Steinweiss and Midlake's McKenzie Smith on percussion. I knew the groove needed to be paramount, Annie Clark said in a press release. I wanted to make a party record you could play at a funeral.

    In Conflict

We are pleased to announce the new album from Owen Pallett, In Conflict, to be released
on May 13th in North America. In Conflict was written and produced by Pallett, recorded
with the core rhythm section of Robbie Gordon and Matt Smith, and features contributions
from Brian Eno and The Czech FILMharmonic Orchestra, amongst others.

In Conflict is full of love songs- more specifically, songs about liminal states and our loved
ones locked in battle with them. "The record is meant to approach 'insanity' in a positive
way," Owen says- emphasis on the ironizing scare quotes around singular notions of
insanity. "Depression, addiction, gender trouble, and the creative state are presented as
positive, loveable, empathetic ways of being. Not preferable, per se, but all as equal, valid
positions that we experience, which makeus human."

Pallett was recently nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Score, alongside
Arcade Fire, for their work on Spike Jonze's Her. Pallett has served as a versatile
collaborator to many projects in both pop and art establishments - The National, The
Mountain Goats, Grizzly Bear, Snow Patrol, and yes even, Taylor Swift - where he is
equally beloved for his accessibility; for the way his art reflects & resonates with Mainstream
Pop Culture; for the emotionally cathartic outlet his music provides.

    Catacombs Of The Black Vatican

Catacombs of the Black Vatican will stand as an enduring testament to Black Label Society s sheer force of will and mastery of each and every musical neighborhood the hard rock titans choose to stomp through. The aggressive bite of the barnstorming BLS banger Damn the Flood sits comfortably right alongside the stripped down, emotionally searing Angel of Mercy, Scars and Shades of Gray. The album's opening tracks, Fields of Unforgiveness and lead single My Dying Time, drop the throttle into swampy, down-tempo menace that wouldn't sound out of place in a Classic Rock band's catalog nor at the creative height of the grunge era.

There's a beauty in caveman like simplicity, in the break-bottles-and-break-necks gusto of a loud power chord. To many listeners, Wylde invented pinch harmonics every bit as much as Chuck Berry s dreamt up the duck walk. When the Guitar Hero franchise was all the rage, Wylde was a playable character in the game.

Every time you're going to make a new record, it's exciting, he says of the run-up to the creation of Catacombs of the Black Vatican. When you're in the studio you can approach it like Salvador Dali where you've got a blank canvas in front of you. You can paint a little bit, sit back and look at it and go, Oh man, let's add a little more red over here, let's make this darker over there. Because live? It's a free-for-all. People are bleeding. There's fire going on. You're getting attacked by grizzly bears.

    Dome Branches: The MVP Demos

In 2008 double bassist/singer-songwriter Nat Baldwin released Most Valuable
Player, an album that led Pitchfork to say he brings fierce performances to these
polished compositions. Now 5 years later, Western Vinyl is proud to be releasing
the original demos from Most Valuable Player, which were recorded in 2005 and
    2006.

The demo album, titled Dome Branches, features Nat's bandmate from Dirty Projectors, Dave Longstreth on guitar and electronics, Jim Reynolds on guitar, Nate Horton
on drums, Tim Keiper on drums, Matt Bauder on Clarinets, Jess Pavone on viola.
Throughout these demos, there's a remarkable raw energy stemming at least in part
from the fact that Nat hadn't performed any of the material live yet, and Longstreth
hadn't heard the songs before, so his guitar parts were made up on the spot.

After studying avant-garde jazz and improvisation with jazz legend Anthony
Braxton, Nat Baldwin started writing songs featuring double bass and vocals. In
2005 he joined Dirty Projectors. In addition to his work with Dirty Projectors, he has
performed on Grizzly Bear's Sheilds, Vampire Weekend's Contra, and Department of
Eagles' In Ear Park. In between touring and recording with Dirty Projectors, Nat
made time to record his 2011 album People Changes, an album that led Pitchfork to
say whether Baldwin is singing with his throat or his bow, there's a thrilling felling
of freedom to it all. More recently, he's been writing, recording, and arranging
songs for a new album to be released in 2014. You can hear some of the new material live this September when Nat tours in the US and Canada.
