Grimes is the moniker of Canadian producer/singer/artist Claire Boucher. She approaches music in a way that is both sensually pleasurable and exploratory; sonic experimentalism run through a pop filter. Her debut album Visions pulls most notably from R&B, New Jack Swing, Industrial, K-pop and Noise. Includes MP3 coupon.

    Art Angels

Art Angels features collaborations with Janelle Monáe and newcomer, Taiwanese rapper Aristophanes. It was recorded primarily in her home studio in Los Angeles, CA, where she relocated to in 2014. Like all of her previous albums, Art Angels was written and recorded entirely as a solo endeavor. The new album features more live instrumentation than ever before on a Grimes record. She plays piano, guitar and violin, continuing her evolution as a musician and a producer for her most ambitious album to date.

    Halfaxa

Halfaxa is Grimes' sophomore LP. Originally available as a limited CD release, it's now available worldwide on LP.

Claire Boucher speaks a different language. And Halfaxa, her second album, feels like the dictionary from which we might discern just where this being comes from. Halfaxa is simultaneously more human than Geidi Primes, and yet falls deeper into a hole of mystical obscurity. The lyrics, as throughout this album, are designed to be an additional instrument, and not necessarily a device that gives obvious meaning to the proceedings.

There is a strong focus on primeval and simplistic percussion to Boucher's music, though I am apprehensive to compare it directly to club music. Even with all the fog and barriers she presents us with, at the core of her music is the human heart. There is a heartbeat in every note. Her breath is often used as a percussive element. Somehow, Grimes says more about life through her methodology than through what she literally chooses to say. Like all great world music, her sound transcends language.

    Darkbloom

A joint release by LA's Hippos In Tanks and Montreal's Arbutus Records, the Darkbloom EP is a thrilling split by d'Eon and Grimes.

Once both rising stars in Montreal's independent music scene, they produced their respective sides independently, though the project was conceptualized together.

Harnessing the dark energy of her sophomore album Halfaxa, along with the shimmering dream pop of her debut Geidi Primes, Grimes' side represents a synthesis of her two sonic personalities. Displaying a level of clarity and craftsmanship heretofore unseen in her releases, Boucher presents a stunning new collection of ethereal dreamscapes that expand her creative palette without compromising the spectral presence she is known for.

Following the Middle-Eastern-tinged R&B of 2010's Palinopsia, d'Eon's continuous, circular suite addresses reliance on technology through both lyrical content and sonic allusion - for example, Telepathy samples cell phone interference. d'Eon broadens his stylistic breadth through reference to a number of electronic genres - for example, he simultaneously incorporates elements of Chicago footwork and new jack swing, but surprises the listener with strange forays into bygone genres such as UK drum and bass and trip hop.

    Geidi Primes

Geidi Primes is Grimes' debut LP. Originally available as a free download, and a limited release of cassettes, it's now available worldwide. It has a strange air of being created unconsciously while the artist herself was asleep. It is a vastly intriguing set of pop tunes highlighted by its amazing fifth and sixth songs: Avi and Feyd Rautha Dark Heart, which are each frighteningly reminiscent of an unaccountable psychic experience you may have never had. It seems like an album made for very tall people about what it's like to be very small. It calls to mind the glowering of a child king amidst the many vestments and decorations of his coronation. Listening to Geidi Primes is what its like to suddenly realize you are being watched while taking a cold shower... on the moon.

We welcome Flowdan back to Hyperdub. It was he, alongside Killa P, who vocaled one of Hyperdub's early hits, the now classic 'Skeng' by the Bug. As a founding member of Roll Deep, Flowdan's guttural yardstyle delivery and booming flow became instantly identifiable amongst the static and anarchy of grime's early-2000s pirate radio presence. Surprisingly, this is his first EP as a solo artist and it's appropriately names 'Serious Business'.

    Grime 2.0

Not "nu grime", "post-grime", "grimestep", "funky grime" or "retro grime." Just grime. Somehow, where other sounds died or dissolved, this grassroots electronic music movement has grown organically for over ten years now. In an era when information acceleration was supposed to grind any new idea up in the hype machine before it had time to find its feet, grime resisted all appropriation, retaining the qualities that made it exciting, fresh and subversive in the first place.

It wasn't easy by any means, and it's survived a lot in that time. It has seen its own MCs become superstars, frequently eclipsing the genre that raised them, then watched as its suburban first cousin dubstep snuck out from the shadows to world domination. It's been through beefs, bans and brawls; been held back by internal and external politics; struggled for recognition while flimsier, flightier sounds have been hyped to oblivion.

Through all that, though, throbbed the warped beats, hollow-sounding bass and preset synth sounds of the scene's uniquely inventive producers, in many ways the keepers of the true flame, while its vocalists searched for as many ways to sell out as they could find. Sometimes as sparse, freaky and out-there as anything else in the electronic continuum, sometimes so far up in your face that you feel like you're going to be spitting teeth. Sucking up influences from garage, techno, jungle, dirty south hip hop, funky house, trance, and anything else that stumbles into its path, but bending it all into its own contorted shapes, grime production remains a brilliantly uncompromising and bloody-minded strand in British underground music - and further abroad too. Journalist and talent scout Joe Muggs, who compiled the CD with Big Dada's Will Ashon, has been working with a number of grime producers on their own digital labels, and began to realize there was a vast untapped reservoir of talent.

So here we are with grime still alive and very much kicking. And here is the most comprehensive survey of grime production the scene has ever had - thirty five exclusive tracks from across the world and across the spectrum of grime, demonstrating it to be some of the most powerful and brilliant electronic music in the world today. We've got new tracks from the originators (the godfather Wiley, Manchester's dubstep/grime originator MRK1, the elusive Youngstar whose 'Pulse X' was the first ever released grime record). We've got the new stars of the scene (Royal T, Preditah, Faze Miyake), and the up-and-comers snapping at their heels (Midlanders Swifta Beater and TC4, Brighton's Moony, Southeast Londoner Mr. Mitch). We've got tracks from Japan (Prettybwoy), Australia (Juzlo), the Netherlands (Gumnaam), Ireland (Major Grave), the US (Starkey and Matt Shadetek) and Canada (Tre Mission). We've got bangers and bubblers, haunting melodies and psychotic grooves, dead-eyed threat and cantankerous joy - and all the way through we've got evidence that this is a scene whose creativity can't be held back and shows no signs of stopping.

    The Grime And The Glow

Chelsea Wolfe's sound is best described with broad strokes: elemental, intense, radiant, ancient yet modern, intimate yet expansive, dark and sparkling. Hues of black metal and deep blues inform her ever-evolving electric folk - a warm force that wraps itself around the listener, encouraging uplift, seeking triumph. She began toting around an 8-track and recording as the mood hit, eventually editing her findings into a breathtaking debut album, 2010's the Grime & The Glow. Marrying the gentle intimacy of folk, the atmospheric voodoo of death rock, and the bleak, sullen nihilism of black metal.

Rachel Grimes is a pianist, composer, and arranger
based in Kentucky - most renowned for her work in
    Rachel's, the groundbreaking chamber-rock ensemble
that introduced an entire generation of underground rock
fans to the unexpected similarities and appeal of
neoclassical music. Grimes has toured the world as a
solo pianist, and as a collaborator with chamber
ensembles such as Portland Cello Project, astrïd,
Cicada, the Amsterdam Sinfonietta trio, and Orchestra
    Kandinskij.

Unhurried, at times fleeting, and stretching into the sky,
The Clearing is a winding path of transient moments
exploring personal memory, relationships, and mystery
from a deeply internal place. The music is a wide
spectrum of textures in strings, harp, piano, woodwinds,
and percussion. Featuring an ensemble that includes

    (Shipping News), Amsterdam Sinfonietta, Jacob

    Out of the Afternoon

A 1962 set from the Roy Haynes Quartet which, at the time, consisted of Haynes, Henry Grimes on bass, Tommy Flanagan on piano and Roland Kirk on saxes, manzello, stritch and flutes. The album is a delightful mix of technique in arrangement and performance, with all of the musicians delivering terrific work Haynes' drumming is absolutely wonderful here, lightly dancing around the other instruments. Flanagan's piano playing is equally light and delicate, and Grimes' bass work is outstanding. There's not much that can be said about Kirk's sax and flute work that hasn't already been said a hundred times.

Part Of The Blue Note 75 Anniversary Vinyl Reissue Campaign

For the second of Cecil Taylor's two Blue Note albums (following Unit Structures), the innovative pianist utilized a sextet comprised of trumpeter Bill Dixon, altoist Jimmy Lyons, both Henry Grimes and Alan Silva on basses and drummer Andrew Cyrille. During the two lengthy pieces, Lyons' passionate solos contrast with Dixon's quieter ruminations while the music in general is unremittingly intense. Both of the Taylor Blue Notes are quite historic and near-classics but, despite this important documentation, Cecil Taylor (other than a pair of Paris concerts) would not appear on records again until 1973.

    The Air Conditioned Nightmare

The Air Conditioned Nightmare is the new album by
Doldrums. The title was spawned by Henry Miller upon his
return to the US after ten years as an expatriate. Keen to
rediscover the country he left behind, Miller found it a
stifling place of big business, pollution, credit, misinformation
and prejudice. "Nowhere else in the world," wrote in his
1945 collection of essays "is the divorce between man and
nature so complete". The Air Conditioned Nightmare.

Seventy years on and the book lends itself to the title of the
anticipated second album by Doldrums, the band led by 25
year old musician Airick Woodhead. On the follow-up to his
2013 debut Lesser Evil (which yielded tours with Unknown
Mortal Orchestra, Crystal Castles, Grimes and Purity Ring,
and remixes for Peaking Lights, Grimes and Portishead), the
DJ, producer and performer makes a sizeable leap from
being darling of the Montreal warehouse creative explosion
that gave the world the likes of Grimes, Majical Cloudz, Blue
Hawaii to being a stand-alone artist and composer on the
    cusp of something quite special.

Doldrums apply a punk rock ethos to electronic music,
creating songs using samplers and DJ gear in place of
guitars. Bold, anxious, dream-like, uplifting, glacial,
hypnotic, constricting, expansive, alien - this is an album
that is ever-changing. "Conflict is at the heart of this
album," explains Airick. "There's a lot of paranoid sentiment
and dystopian imagery in there. The threat of a mundane
reality ties it together, as does an obsession with plasticity.
Songs come from specific feelings or images. Anxiety is my
    default state."

The Air Conditioned Nightmare is an album of texture and
taste, an extra-sensory overload. Weaving through the mix
are Woodhead's androgynous, tweaked vocals singing lyrics
like voices down broken phone-lines. This is music born of
the 21st century. The Air Conditioned Nightmare is an album
that is punk rock in its DIY beginnings and militant commitment
to originality. Ten snatched seconds is enough to pull
you in. Ultimately,The Air Conditioned Nightmare stands
alone. Doldrums have created something special. You need
    to hear it.

    Selenography

Originally released in 1999, Rachels fourth album is a collection of songs that have been staples of the bands live shows and songs that arose from the freedom of having a home studio. A primary factor in the creation of this record was that for the first time, all three songwriters lived in the same city; Christian Frederickson having joined Rachel Grimes and Jason Noble in Louisville, KY. The first session at Chicago Recording Company in July of 1997 was a clearing of the decks, recording a backlog of songs the band had been performing live for years but hadnt put to tape. A year of touring and songwriting preceded the bands return to the studio, this time at Pachyderm Studios in Cannon Falls, MN. Four days of seclusion in the wilderness produced a group of songs which the band brought home to Louisville. Recording at home allowed the band to experiment with integrating live and electronic textures.

    Complete Communion

Not counting a couple of sessions he co-led with John Coltrane and Albert Ayler, Complete Communion was the first album Don Cherry recorded as a leader following his departure from the Ornette Coleman Quartet. It was also one of the earliest showcases for the Argentinian tenor saxophonist Gato Barbieri, who Cherry discovered during a stay in Rome. While the music on Complete Communion was still indebted to Coleman's concepts, Cherry injected enough of his own personality to begin differentiating himself as a leader. He arranged the original LP as two continuous side-long suites, each of which incorporated four different compositions and was recorded in a single take. In practice, this meant that several melodic themes popped up over the course of each side; all the musicians free-associated off of each theme, engaging in intense, abstract dialogues before moving on to the next. As the album's title suggests, every member of the group not only solos, but shares the total space selflessly. Bassist Henry Grimes and drummer Ed Blackwell both play extremely active roles, especially Grimes, who solos powerfully and sometimes carries the main riffs. Often the music sounds more like a conversation, as opposed to a solo with support, because the musicians make such intelligent use of space and dynamics, and wind up with a great deal of crackling, volatile interplay as a result. The leader remains recognizably himself, and his burnished tone is a nice contrast with Barbieri's fiery approach; for his part, Barbieri's playing has a lot of speechlike inflections, and he spends a lot of time in the upper register of his horn, which makes him sound quite similar to Ornette at times. As a whole, the project comes off remarkably well, establishing Cherry as an avant-garde force to be reckoned with in his own right.

    Parallel Memories

Mr. Mitch is one of a small group of producers who in the last few years have been re-imagining the decade-old genre of Grime. Miles Mitchell, a 26 year-old South East Londoner, started his own Gobstopper label back in 2010 after having his debut release on Butterz. Last year he started the flourishing Boxed 'Instrumental Grime' night alongside producers Slackk, Logos and Oil Gang. For Mr. Mitch, Grime has always been an experimental and progressive genre, taking elements of what came before it and pushing those boundaries to create something new. His debut album is called 'Parallel Memories' and Miles has an intriguing story that explains that title. When listening to his tracks, he sees the same vivid scenes in his head each time he replays the music, often repeated snapshots of his life in various impossible scenarios or distorted situations. This made him think What if the images I'm seeing are memories from an alternative version of me in a parallel dimension? A question which reflects his vision of Grime too, as his instrumentals are informed by a quite personal and emotive alter-life, where Grime's famous minimalism gives way to a gentle subtlety and is imbued with a very different feeling to the brash aggression associated with the genre. The album intro 'Afternoon After' is the bleary-eyed sound of the club the night before, broken down into swirling child-like synth melodies, coiling over flattened, but airy kick drums. 'The Night' follows, sounding like something Boards Of Canada might do if they came from S.E. London, its gorgeous flute melodies opening up gracefully over minimal rhythms and shifting static tones. 'Intense Faces' marks a shift in the energy to bassline, synth swoops and sharp claps, a child-like bleep tune playing out over the top. 'Don't Leave' switches the mood to one of sadness, its rising chords evolving over a repeated, slowed-down acapella. Elsewhere 'Sweet Boy Code', a collaboration with fellow Gobstopper artist Dark0, lets spacey kicks propel its gentle relaxed melodies over airy sampled vocals. The midpoint track 'Wandering Glaciers' twists Grime into what sounds like a tense piece of early electronica. Meanwhile 'Bullion' chops up a lumbering sample that sound like a marauding giant. The album finishes on 'Hot Air', with its drum pattern sounding like a slow heart beat and strange, backwards synths, it feels like a voyage around a body. This is an album that deserves to find an audience who are willing to go on a journey into new areas with Grime.

    Master/Slave

    Master/Slave is Whips/Chains monstrous debut 12EP.

Taking no time to set a tone, opener Secular Front crawls through a wreckage of noise before breaking into a D-Beat stride. Other songs Brick and Mortar, Trembling and Alone, and Human Filth carry this same bombastic quality, but also introduce subtle hooks into the fray. These dynamics make Whips/Chains not only powerful, but also uniquely listenable. Creating a mesmerizing push and pull throughout the grime and fury.

    Stigmata

The first full album from Toronto's Tre Mission, Stigmata" achieves something remarkable. He takes a genre which we think we know and which,in all honesty, he should have no right interfering with. Then here-shapes it into something entirely new. Coming over as the missing link between Wiley and Outkast, Mission elaborates the connections (via his own roots in the Caribbean) between UK grime and North American rap and makes the whole thing sound as natural, as soulful, as hard and heavy as you like.

    Apokalypsis

Chelsea Wolfe's sound is best described with broad strokes: elemental, intense, radiant, ancient yet modern, intimate yet expansive, dark and sparkling. Hues of black metal and deep blues inform her ever-evolving electric folk - a warm force that wraps itself around the listener, encouraging uplift, seeking triumph. After The Grime & The Glow, Wolfe relocated to Los Angeles and recorded her second album, 2011's Apokalypsis, which found her in an actual studio with her live band.

    Music For Egon Schiele

Originally released on Quarterstick Records in 1996, Music for Egon Schiele is the soundtrack to a piece of dance and theater that debuted at the Itinerant Theater Guild in 1995 in Chicago. Based on the life of the romantic and controversial Viennese painter, Egon Schiele was written and directed by Stephen Mazurek, who headed the group of performing artists. Rachel Grimes composed the music and performed it with two string musicians during the run of the performance.

As Rachels second album, Music for Egon Schiele contains a more stripped down and immediate musical focus than their first album, Handwriting. The playing is primarily piano and cello throughout the recording. Although the footsteps laid on the first record are here, this is definitely more of the road less traveled. An interpretation of emotions and colors played out on the stage and embodied by the Rachels to capture expression of colors and tones in musical notation. These songs are not sparse, theyre beautiful. They build, they crash, and they make you wish you knew more about the mysteries it holds.

    Handwriting (Awaiting Repress)

Rachel's began recording in April of 1991 in Baltimore, MD under the direction of Christian Frederickson and Jason Noble. Subsequently, they met and became close friends with Rachel Grimes (who was given a copy of their Rachel's Halo cassette because of her first name). In September of 1994 after a few more city moves, band break-ups, and general melancholy, these three musicians decided to become a full time band and complete their first recording, Handwriting.

The trio assembled other musicians who they respected; John, Mark and Barry from the Chicago supergroup the Coctails, Kevin Coultas from Rodan, Shellac bassist Bob Weston, and several other string players from various walks of life. The result was a group of semi-vagrants, some reading from sheet music, some rambunctious noisemakers, working from an equally improvisational and tight-assed way.

Since the release of Handwriting in 1995, Rachel's has performed in libraries, churches, rock dungeons, ballrooms, gardens, bowling alleys and movie theaters across the world. They have worked with filmmakers, dance companies, stage productions, printmakers and photographers. Their recordings and shows have been described as subversives with a cello, classical post-rock, post-classical and lo-fi Louisville loafers.
