    Greetings From Asbury Park, NJ

Mastered By Bob Ludwig Working Under The Supervision of Springsteen & Engineer Toby Scott

Bruce Springsteen's debut album found him squarely in the tradition of Bob Dylan: folk-based tunes arranged for an electric band featuring piano and organ (plus, in Springsteen's case, 1950s-style rock & roll tenor saxophone breaks), topped by acoustic guitar and a husky voice singing lyrics full of elaborate, even exaggerated imagery. But where Dylan had taken a world-weary, cynical tone, Springsteen was exuberant. His street scenes could be haunted and tragic, as they were in Lost in the Flood, but they were still imbued with romanticism and a youthful energy. Asbury Park painted a portrait of teenagers cocksure of themselves, yet bowled over by their discovery of the world. It was saved from pretentiousness (if not preciousness) by its sense of humor and by the careful eye for detail that kept even the most high-flown language rooted. Like the lyrics, the arrangements were busy, but the melodies were well developed and the rhythms, pushed by drummer Vincent Lopez, were breakneck.

    Greetings From L.A.

    Special Postcard Sleeve!

The first album in his 'sex-funk' era, Greetings From L.A. (1972) was a step into another direction for Buckley. Ordinarily known for his signature Folk sound, on Greetings From L.A. he focused on Soul, Jazz and Funk for the first time in his career. Throughout the album, Buckley shifts effortlessly between honky-tonk sing-a- longs, groovy organ grinders and laidback Soul. His vocals at times resemble a cross between Mick Jagger & Jim Morrison. Just like the original, the front sleeve contains a unique punch-out postcard of a wonderful Los Angeles vista.

    Greetings and Salutations

Twelve New tracks recorded at The Moathouse in Gainesville and produced by Less Than Jake's own Roger Lima, includes both (extremely!) limited edition EP's Season's Greetings and Greetings From Less Than Jake plus two unreleased songs.

The dozen tracks are pure unfiltered Less Than Jake, sunny ska mixed with barn-burner punk rock, more intended to get long-time fans and first-time listeners warmed up and moshing in their living rooms and singing along to every lyric.

Keeping its signature mix of punk roots and horn-driven melodies, songs like A Return To Headphones and Finer Points Of Forgiveness take the best of old-school Less Than Jake and put on a fresh coat of paint for an amped-up listening experience.

    Neptune City

    180 Gram Vinyl

Prior to the release of Neptune City (2007), Nicole Atkins found herself at a bar in Neptune City, New Jersey called Bilow's, thinking about what she would title her next album. She pondered aloud naming the album Neptune City, almost as a counterbalance to Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J., with encouragement from the bar's patrons. And I figured Neptune City, too, it seems so ominous, she told the Village Voice. It sounds like very, you know, aquatic and mysterious.

Neptune City was generally well received by most music critics. Atkins shows on this album that she has both the capability and potential. The lush arrangements on Neptune City showcase the depth, range, and versatility of Atkins' alto voice, not to mention her songwriting prowess. Something akin to country, but also something post-modern, this is heartbreak nearly at its finest - and most cosmopolitan.

The album reached No. 6 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers chart.

    Chapter And Verse

'Chapter and Verse,' the audio companion to Bruce Springsteen's extraordinary forthcoming autobiography, will be released on Columbia Records. The career-spanning compilation will be released four days before Simon & Schuster publishes 'Born to Run.' Five of the album's 18 tracks have not been previously released.

Springsteen selected the songs on 'Chapter and Verse' to reflect the themes and sections of 'Born to Run.' The compilation begins with two tracks from The Castiles, featuring a teenaged Springsteen on guitar and vocals, and ends with the title track from 2012's 'Wrecking Ball.' The collected songs trace Springsteen's musical history from its earliest days, telling a story that parallels the one in the book.

Recordings from Steel Mill and The Bruce Springsteen Band feature musicians who would go on to play in The E Street Band. Solo demos of "Henry Boy" and "Growin' Up" were cut in 1972 shortly before Springsteen began recording his debut album, 'Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J.'

    Bound For Glory

Previously unreleased early broadcast featuring rare versions of many early Springsteen hits!

April 1973 from The Main Point, Bryn Mawr, Philadelphia

By mid 1972 the rock landscape was looking decidedly dull. The search for a new Beatles or a new Dylan to re-unite the Woodstock generation and their younger siblings had come to nothing and the natives were getting restless. So when word began to filter through of new-kid-on-the-block Bruce Springsteen breaking out of home city Asbury Park, New Jersey, and playing shows nationwide that reconfirmed audiences faith in the redemptive power of rock n roll, hope began to restore. Bruce had signed a recording deal with Columbia in mid-72 and had been working on his debut record since. Greetings From Asbury Park saw the light of day in early 73, and within the week Springsteen, with a little help from three of the soon to be named East Street Band, were performing their first ever radio broadcast, aired on Boston's WBCN FM. A quite remarkable performance ensued with Bruce and the boys in excellent humour and fine form as they played a terrific set, although remarkably including just one cut from Greetings. The show was an intimate affair without an audience but gave listeners their first glimpse into Springsteen's infectious personality, enormous enthusiasm and unique sense of humour. It also drove home the message that here was an artist who could prove to be the new messiah, with songs that quite beggared belief. The second show featured on this LP is Bruce's very first broadcast from the Main Point venue in Bryn Mawr, just outside Philadelphia - the venue at which Bruce's most prestigious and highly regarded broadcast was made, the astonishing 1975 gig that has also recently been released. This April 1973 set differs widely from the January 73 show as the full band (drummer Vini Lopez joins proceedings) rock out, and comparisons with the largely acoustic Boston broadcast remain fascinating. That was pretty good, Bruce is heard to mutter as the final track of this broadcast draws to a close - providing the perfect understatement for the burgeoning talent heard maturing in these two broadcasts, and equally for the shows themselves, as just one listen to this remarkable LP will testify.

    So Much Forever

After More Heart Than Brains was released in 2009, Greetings From Tuskan (Joëlle Lê) and Buck 65 (Rich Terfry) directly started working on a follow up record. This turned out to be a high mountain to climb and it wasn't until September 2013 that everything starting to come together. A half-decade removed from the ethereal hopeless romanticism of 2009 Bike For Three! have returned with their sophomore LP on Fake Four, Inc.

The album begins with the sound of a solitary heart beating underscored by Joëlle's eerie, soothing atmospherics. From there the urgency of "Full Moon" kicks in and Rich is at the podium, unraveling his innermost thoughts through tightly knit stanzas and abstracted fragments.

Joëlle's aural shapes and colours have found a focus that push Rich's words and performance to new places. Both artists feeding off each others darkest states and lingering demons. Joëlle imagined a mesmerizing foundation for Rich's poetry and associate thoughts. The result is the music of a shared lucid dream and a conversation held in several different languages.

The listener is left to connect the dots on cryptic tracks like "You Can Be Everything" and "The Muse Inside Me", as Buck's frantic internal dialogue refracts off of Joëlle's arpeggiating synths, rich, multi-hued textures and subtle backing vocals.

So Much Forever retains its thematic continuity through Rich's candid writing and Joëlle's kaleidoscopic collages whilst allowing the protagonist to explore a wide range of deliveries. On "Conflation", Buck is a beat poet lost in time, placing his anguish in a larger context and wrapping up the record with the thesis statement "My love will level this city."

So Much Forever can be seen as the logical next step in their story, another page in their shared diary that sees Joëlle taking up more vocal duties and Rich exploring new corners of his imagination.

Oh yes, they still haven't met. More close than ever.

    Turkish Leather

Detroit three piece Ritual Howls new album tells stories fit for Poe
or Lovecraft. On their debut full length for felte, titled Turkish
Leather, they incorporate a variety of styles into an ominously
self-assured statement of intent, Ben Saginaw and Chris
Samuels' sounds providing an imposing form for Paul Bancell's
darkly alive lyrics to inhabit. Their influences range from English
post-punk to Nick Cave to the industrial sounds of Skinny Puppy,
and the band melds them expertly. Combining field recordings
with electronics, this music is sound design turned pop.

Many tracks here feel cinematic - whether it's the industrial
clanging of "A Taste of You," which brings to mind a Lynchian bar
scene, or the gothy synths of "Take Me Up," a slow burning track
that escalates into full on melodrama. It's easy to imagine these
twangy guitar lines gracing a scene in a Jarmusch film: their
aesthetic owes as much to Tom Waits as it does Ennio
    Moriccone.

Ritual Howls manages to take all these influences and come out
sounding uniquely morbid, raw and unyielding - never derivative.
It's a record that holds nothing back: the band announcing
themselves to the world with all of the confidence of long time
professionals. Their future audience will greet them with
    enthusiasm.

Boddie Recording Company: Cleveland, OH (Box Set)

From 1958 to 1993, Thomas and Louise Boddies industrious Boddie Recording Company issued nearly 300 albums and 45s, recorded 10,000 hours of tape, and remained in operation longer than any other studio, pressing plant, or label group in the history of Cleveland. Long forgotten even by the standards of the chronically overlooked northeastern Ohio music scene, Boddie was a fusion of its owners engineering genius and his limited economic means; its DIY recording studio housed in a humble barn, churned night and day to capture the sounds emanating from Clevelands east side neighborhoods.

The 65 tracks on this 5LP box set represent the best of the Boddies in-house Soul Kitchen, Luau, and Bounty labels, which released an unspoiled treasure trove of kitchen-sink eccentric soul, fuzzbox funk, shoestring doo-wop, and haunted, eerily hook-laden spirituals. Enclosed inside is a mountain of office-styled ephemera: two massive booklets brimming with detail on the Boddies and their artists; extensive notes and scores of unpublished photos; a complete detailed discography folio; reproduced fliers; and a Boddie greeting card, all rendered with the handcrafted charm that was the Boddie hallmark. Call it a self-contained record industry crammed into one box.

Featuring 65 tracks on 5 LPs, two massive booklets brimming with detail, extensive notes and scores of unpublished photos, detailed discography, and reproduced fliers and a Boddie greeting card.

Callas Portrays Verdi Heroines (Studio Recital) (Pre-Order)

Coinciding with the new Callas Live Remastered Edition, the cataloger's 2017 priority, Warner Classics re-releases two of Maria Callas' legendary studio recitals on vinyl, using the state of the art remastering done in 2014.

This recital brings together three operas from the earlier years of Verdi's career (Nabucco, Ernani and Macbeth) and one of his greatest mature masterpieces (Don Carlo). Callas sang all of them on stage apart from Ernani, and Lady Macbeth proved a triumph for her when she opened La Scala's season in December 1952.

Gramophone greeted this recital by saying: Mme Callas has seldom had such a field day and her dramatic instinct is well-nigh perfect in interpreting these wonderful pages, each characterized convincingly - and differently.

    1. Macbeth, Act 1: Nel dì della vittoria ....Vienil t'affretta (Lady Macbeth, Chorus)
    2. Macbeth, Act 2: La luce langue (Lady Macbeth)

    Santana IV

Santana IV is the wildly anticipated studio album that reunites the revered early '70s lineup of guitar icon Carlos Santana (guitar, vocals), Gregg Rolie (keyboards, lead vocals), Neal Schon (guitar, vocals), Michael Carabello (percussion) and Michael Shrieve (drums). The album signifies the first time in 45 years - since 1971's multi-platinum classic Santana III - that the quintet has recorded together.

Santana IV features 16 all-new tracks written and produced by the band that burst with the same unparalleled energy and superlative musicianship that made Santana a pioneering force in world music and a household name across the globe. Joining the core Santana IV band in the studio are current Santana members Karl Perazzo (percussion) and Benny Rietveld (bass), with the legendary vocalist Ronald Isley guesting on two cuts.

The origins for the reunion go back several years, when Schon suggested that he and Carlos Santana record together. Santana liked the idea but went one better, proposing that they recruit Rolie, Shrieve and Carabello for what would be called Santana IV. After initial writing sessions and rehearsals took place in 2013, the group recorded throughout 2014 and 2015, amassing 16 spellbinding tracks that combined all their signature elements - Afro-Latin rhythms, soaring vocals, electrifying blues-psychedelic guitar solos, and irrepressibly jubilant percussion work - with widescreen hooks and melodies that will lodge themselves in the thicket of listeners' senses and stay there.

It was magical, Santana says. We didn't have to try to force the vibe - it was immense. >From there, we then needed to come up with a balance of songs and jams that people would immediately identify as Santana.

The band's signature sound arrives forcefully on the album opener Yambu, a righteously gritty and soulful stomper teeming with swirling B3 organ hooks and walloping guitar crunch.

The first single, Anywhere You Want to Go, is destined to storm the pantheon of Santana classics. Written by Gregg Rolie, it's a sexy, body-shaking winner and an unmistakable tip of the hat to the inescapable cha-cha/Latin jazz charms of Oye Como Va.

Ronald Isley (The Isley Brothers) is a special guest on two tracks. His vocals highlight the feverishly impassioned Latin-rock workout Love Makes the World Go Round and the hard-edged and funky Freedom in Your Mind. Guitar fans expecting fireworks from Santana and Schon will cherish Santana IV from front to back. All Aboard is a no-holds-barred guitar jam of the highest order, as is the slinky, soulful metal cruncher Caminando, which explodes with tectonic axe force. And on the unabashedly British blues-tinged Shake It, the two go toe to toe on not one but two extended solo runs that will have lovers of unhinged fretboard work rejoicing.

Carlos and I feel more connected than ever, says Schon. We get super-aggressive when we play, but also melodic and poetic. We have an incredible dialog with each other on our guitars.

Santana's recurring themes of love and tolerance are common threads throughout Santana IV, most dramatically on the epic tone poem album closer Forgiveness, a languid and breathtakingly gorgeous atmospheric groover.

Music fans familiar with the roaring lion artwork on Santana's 1969 debut album will instantly greet Heather Griffin-Vine's graphic for Santana IV as a gloriously realized update of that iconic image. I really think the music goes along with the cover, and vice versa, says Santana. It all fits together beautifully.

Few bands can pick up a musical dialog after 45 years apart, but on Santana IV each band member reaches a new level of virtuosity and communal intuition on a collection of songs that easily stands side-by-side with the group's treasured early work.

When you can go back and break new ground with joy and determination - and some whoop-ass energy - it gets you going, says Santana. I think we achieved something very rare. This music was screaming to come out of us. It wasn't about nostalgia. It was about passion.

    Live In London

Live In London is the first live recording and concert film from acclaimed artist Regina Spektor. Captured mainly at London's famed Hammersmith Apollo Theatre, Live In London features 22 remarkable performances that span Spektor's brilliant catalog of music, including three new songs that have only been performed live (Silly Eye-Color Generalizations, Bobbing For Apples and Love, You're A Whore). Live In London was recorded during Regina's UK tour in support of her latest album, Far, which debuted at #3 on the Billboard Top 200.

An artist praised for her remarkable originality, inspired storytelling and enthralling performances, Rolling Stone raves Spektor put on one of the most intensely joyful rock shows we've seen all year. The Philadelphia Inquirer adds, Everything she did was greeted with thunderous applause ... the audience could not get enough. Perhaps what was most remarkable about Regina's performance, aside from hearing Spektor's gorgeous vocals in person, was her ability to enrapture the crowd. Spektor's passion, vitality and sheer musical talent transformed the Electric Factory into a world of intimacy. The Boston Globe simply says, multitalented Spektor is capable of anything and it shows on stage.

The Big Black And The Blue

First Aid Kit, the Swedish folk duo composed of sisters Johanna and Klara Söderberg, recorded their debut album, The Big Black & The Blue with their father at their home studio in Sweden. Released in North America in May of 2010 via Wichita Records, the effort quickly earned praise from AOL Music, NPR's All Things Considered, Nylon and SPIN and landed on numerous 2010 'Best Of' lists.

In support of the endeavor, the sisters performed at the Austin City Limits festival, CMJ Music Marathon and SXSW, toured the US twice and found time to record a Blue Series 7 of Buffie Sainte Marie's Universal Soldier with Jack White at his request for Third Man Records.

In 2011 the band toured with both Lykke Li and Bright Eyes and recorded their sophomore album, The Lions Roar with producer, Mike Mogis. Released in January of 2012, it was greeted heartily by press and radio and broke onto the Billboard 200 album chart.

Wichita Recordings is thrilled to offer the reissue of First Aid Kits' debut album The Big Black & The Blue which features live show standouts Ghost Town, Hard Believer and I Met Up With The King among others.

    Freedom & Surrender

    Freedom and Surrender

The circuitous dance between the beginning and the end.

Something amazing and terrifying happened to me as I entered into my 30s. I realized that I had run far off the course of my scripted plans, my projections for who I'd be, what I'd be doing, and how it would feel at this point. Then, the realization the mapped trail couldn't be recovered. A hound without a hunt, I was captured by unfamiliar woods far from earshot of the original game and players. Untethered by marriage with a scrap pile of maternal designs that never took root, I found myself forced, thank goodness, to let go.

The pageantry of over-identifying with past experiences and old ideals had ended. In review, I found that life's unfolding had exceeded my most elaborate visions while other hopes had slipped into ruin in the clasp of my determined hands. Meanwhile, a new meekness and curiosity made all of my experiences sacred and overwhelming, something akin to a reverent depression. Desire was quieted in my heart, and I was uneasy in the cool of my newness, wondering what I really wanted to do next.

When the label suggested that I consider working with Larry Klein, my entire focus shifted with a warm shrug, Why not? He's produced some of my favorite records. Within a few conversations I had found plenty of reasons to trust the voice on the other end of the line. I knew that I was respected for my potential and achievements, and he wasn't new to dealing with strong women. Another shrug, Why not? I had plenty to sing about now, a heart cracked open by disappointment, a will broken by the truth. I was ready for a new project, the kind of baby that I knew how to make.

It was suggested to me initially that I make a record of covers. It was the very moment my hard head became bent on writing my way out of my valley, no matter how hard or long I'd have to work for it. I'd count my steps and tell stories until I met the ridge line without borrowing anyone else's view. This was not my hour to cover, but to uncover, and hopefully, the reveal would be worth something. I trembled in the wait for my own revelation.

I scurried around the country (Nashville, New York and LA) to have collaborative conversations with old and new friends. I remembered how to just sit with people and talk, even though I was on a schedule and budget. We all spoke like we were on Grandma's porch, but the work got done. To my delighted surprise, much of this record was written with Larry himself.

My average day of preproduction with him looked like: A sunrise run and swim at Santa Monica pier, showing up to his studio sandy, salty, and red faced, talking through beautiful rambles with him and David Batteau while high on espresso. Then we'd get snagged by a soulful riff from Larry's acoustic bass guitar as he noodled along (seemingly) aimlessly. Often a story would present a hook and we'd return the next day with responses. This felt like an old and dignified pace of work, but also kind of risky. However, I looked up after a few months of these weeklong neighborly sits and real songs were following us, a train getting longer, each car intact and connected as we rolled on.

In the evenings I listened to demos of the budding songs on my phone as the sun set over the Pacific. I could see them, unmade movies. The tide of communion would pull back and the shining pieces left could be made into anything. This is when I knew that I had, in these mosaic sessions, stumbled upon a new page of my life.

I remembered the feeling of being found. One of the most moving songs from it's inception was, Somewhere Down the Mystic. Playing on the simple wonders of my rustic Appalachian life, we imagined a love lost to death and the feeling of it's lasting warmth, a nod to love's reach across life's threshold.

Months later, on February 20th, I had a near death experience, sliding across 300 yards of ice coated mountain curve. I softened my body and rested my hands in my lap. The heavy car floated silently towards a 75 foot ravine that ended with a wide band of frozen creek. Ok was the only thing I could get out in a sigh. I was stopped by a young bellwood tree that grew out of the bank like a hook. I slowed my breathing and meditated in suspension. About 20 minutes later, a young neighbor pulled the door open, reaching in with a strong arm to guide my climb out. Now when I sing the chorus, I see the gracious hole and the sweet sapling that grows over it. It threw me back, a fish returned to the river with a cut lip.

The pink bells of the tree can be seen on my homepage, and I want to keep such simple things close from now on. Why not? They were strong enough to save me. In surrender I experience freedom. The gift of an end is a beginning. I greet the sun with the only reason I've ever needed, why not?

    Bright Phoebus

The First Time This 1972 Masterpiece Has Been Widely Available On LP

    Remastered From The Original Tapes

Originally released in 1972, Bright Phoebus combined the incredible songwriting of siblings Lal & Mike from folk revival group The Watersons. Moving on from, but not forgetting their folk roots, the album is a post psychedelic collection of songs recorded in a 'loose & anarchic'fashion in Cecil Sharpe House with a folk-rock super group numbering Richard Thompson,Norma Waterson, Maddy Prior, Martin Carthy & Ashley Hutchings. Its release was greeted with derision and its initial pressing of 2000 LPs has long since fallen out of print. Since then the album has become legend, its scarcity not hindering generations of music fans falling for its beguiling atmosphere.

Over the course of four decades, the only means of hearing Lal and Mike Waterson's 1972 folk noir masterpiece had been unofficial CDs, cassettes distributed between fans and, in more recent times, YouTube uploads. And yet, despite the relative obscurity of the record being celebrated, 2000 people had packed London's The Barbican to witness live performance sof these songs by an extended family of Watersons, Carthys and kindred musical spirits. Toofolk to be embraced by the rock world, yet not traditional enough for the folk clubs where performing original material was tantamount to heresy, Bright Phoebus has had to wait an awfully long time for its moment of reappraisal. Almost by stealth, however, that moment seems to have arrived. In a Mojo chart of the 50 greatest British eccentric albums of all time, the album sat proudly among household names such as Kate Bush and Pink Floyd. In 2007, Bright Phoebus was the subject of a BBC Radio 4 documentary and Lal was the subject of a tribute concert which was televised by BBC2. With every passing year, its influence on generations of musicians who had yet to be born when it was released grows ever greater.

This release will be the first time that the album will be widely available. Under the supervision of David Suff (Topic/Fledling) & Mary Waterson (daughter of Lal), the album has been remastered from the original master tapes. It's tempting to say that it was a record ahead of its time, but actually, Bright Phoebus is a record that exists outside of its time. A journey into a world where beauty and hardship are intertwined: a world of pagan sacrifice and stillborn children; a world where fairytale endings are frustrated by the demands of mere survival; where even the visiting magical man passing through the town seems to carry with him a faint air of menace.

Featuring Peter Banks and Tony Kaye of YES

Mastered from the Original Capitol Records Tapes by Joe Reagoso at Friday Music Studios and Capitol Records in Hollywood, CA with Ron McMaster

When former members of YES Peter Banks (guitars) and Tony Kaye (keyboards) teamed up and re-emerged on the recording scene with a new prog-rock quintet called Flash, their 1972 self-titled debut LP was immediately greeted with great sales and solid reviews, thanks in part to their memorable hit single Small Beginnings.

In addition to the legendary Peter Banks and Tony Kaye, Flash consisted of more prog-rock royalty like Colin Carter (vocals), Ray Bennett (bass and vocals) and Mike Hough (drums). In record time, the band developed into a highly important concert and recording act, as their new album Flash brought them much acclaim.

Every track on this stellar first project is a standout. Aside from the aforementioned smash Small Beginnings, rock radio standards of the time like Dreams of Heaven and Children of the Universe continue to enthrall fans of these progressive rock champions. Even the mood pieces like Ray Bennetts masterful Morning Haze and the stellar The Time It Takes show some of the more English folk and bluesier side of this brilliant masterpiece.

The Flash album, also known for having one of the most interesting album covers ever released, sold quite well throughout its substantial radio and retail run back in 1972-73. Banks guitar work is second to none throughout this stunning release, as keyboard virtuoso Tony Kaye lends his trademark keyboard passages to complement each song found on the entire album.

For the first time ever on audiophile vinyl, Friday Music presents the prog-rock masterpiece debut by Flash. Mastered impeccably from the original Capitol/Sovereign Records tapes by Joe Reagoso at Friday Music Studios and at Capitol Records in Hollywood, CA with Ron McMaster, the Flash album is a much welcomed release for all the fans of prog and classic rock.

In addition to the great music within, this limited edition high grade vinyl release also comes in a super rare gatefold cover, for the first time in over three decades! To enhance your listening pleasure, Friday Music has also packaged the album in a poly lined protective sleeve and a poly bag for the album cover too.

    Apex Predator - Easy Meat

Having just wrapped up a tour through Japan, UK Grindcore pioneers NAPALM DEATH are now launching the cover artwork and the tracklisting for their upcoming 15th studio album. Entitled Apex Predator - Easy Meat, the album will be released via Century Media Records.

The album's striking artwork, which can be seen above, was created by Danish designer Frode Sylthe / Friktion.com, who has previously worked on NAPALM DEATH's latest album Utilitarian as well as with bands such as At The Gates, The Haunted or Burst. NAPALM DEATH checked in to comment about the artwork as follows:

There are many meanings that you could grab from the new album artwork, I think. But one is the representation of how our natural and most basic needs for happiness and communication are being stripped away by materialism and pre-packaged garbage - crap that we don't need, filtered to us through the media via the megacorporations with the goal to maintain the bloated bottom line of profit. It's all just stuff that will be obsolete in 6 months time. And behind the scenes of course, modern day slavery is alive, well and obscured by this facade. It's all an exercise in deceit to shower us with fake fulfilment, while the poor and underprivileged fall further by the wayside. - Shane Embury / NAPALM DEATH

Across the albums, we have had some very complex and interconnected artwork. This time we wanted to keep it more simple - strip it down perhaps to a single image that would sharpen the focus. I loved the idea of the supermarket-style packaging as soon as I saw it, as when you go into one of those places with nourishment in mind and you're greeted with some miserable, artificially-enhanced foodstuff contained in a bleak little receptacle of industrial plastics, it doesn't exactly inspire you. To then fill that plastic tray with the dregs of meat production, well, that is the 'easy meat' in the title - representing the people who suffer for burgeoning consumption degraded and dumped in the most pitiful way. - Mark 'Barney' Greenway / NAPALM DEATH

    You Know Who You Are

Having recorded five albums in ten years and toured extensively in support of all of them, Nada Surf - singer/guitarist Matthew Caws, bassist Daniel Lorca, drummer Ira Elliot and guitarist Doug Gillard (now official fourth member, more on that later) - opted to follow 2012's cracking The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy with a brief but well-earned hiatus. So in January 2015, when Caws informed Nada Surf's vociferous Facebook following that a new record was just about done, the news was greeted with explosive enthusiasm.

The music was in the can, he announced, and all that remained was to finish up a few lyrics and sing a few vocals; something he planned to do on off-days off during an upcoming solo acoustic tour. Caws even included a photo of the recording set-up he was bringing in the car. "I was so eager to have an album done that I believed in it as it was," Caws recalls. "But the great thing about being 'finished' is that you can take a breath and evaluate, because the pressure to 'do it' is gone. The more I listened and thought about it, the more I realized that I might want to keep working. Also, I'd sent the tracks to my friend Josh, who runs Barsuk Records, the label we've been on since 2002, and he said 'It's great,' but followed that with a pregnant pause. I got the message. I didn't take that as a critique as much as a belief that I could do better. It was very freeing."

And lo and behold, what would have been another really good Nada Surf album (their seventh since getting signed to a major in the go-go 90's and scoring a worldwide alterna-hit with "Popular") became what could well be the most representative collection of the group's two-decade career, all while pushing towards whatever comes next. Captured in the album's 10 tracks is every beloved facet of the band, but You Know Who You Are also finds much on offer that stands apart from anything previously heard in the band's diverse catalog.

Undivided Heart & Soul, produced by Dan Molad (Lucius) and
McPherson, and developed largely in the studio (that studio being the historic
RCA Studio B in Nashville), carries a sense of immediacy and irreverence.

"In writing this record, I threw several handfuls of caution to the wind.
Lyrically, I was allowing myself to be exposed in a way I never have before.
Concurrently, maybe as some sort of a self-defense mechanism, the guitars
got fuzzier and louder. The first day at RCA was like being in church...
by the second day, it was a high school band's rehearsal space."

Putting the hands of Dan Molad on the wheel of the record ensured that
the music didn't take too many expected turns. "Having toured with
Lucius and befriended Dan, I knew he was the guy to push my buttons
and challenge me to try new things. He's a tireless worker. He's constantly
tinkering away on something... and music just falls out of him."

The vintage recording equipment and instruments still housed
in RCA Studio B greatly informed the direction of the record. "Each night,
at the end of tracking, someone would invariably say, 'You wanna put vibes
on this?', speaking of the old RCA Vibraphone. I mean, you can hear THAT
vibraphone on Roy Orbison's 'Crying'... we couldn't keep our hands off of it.
It guided some of the songs into some strange and wonderful places.
'Lucky Penny' took such a cool turn once Ray (Jacildo, keys) added some to it.
We wrote several songs on the piano that Floyd Cramer played 'Last
Date' on. We were soaking up so much of the phantom energy in
that room, it led to some incredible sonic territory."

"Most folks know us for our take on vintage R&B and early Rock N' Roll.
The past year, I've been digging so much into the heavier, brasher sounds of
early Rock N' Roll... from bands like The Sonics, Link Wray, and into some
early British Rock such as The Creation... these influences feature heavily in
these songs. The tunes that showed up weren't exactly always in familiar
territory, and... we greeted them as welcome strangers. They have a lot
of heart... and that's what Rock N' Roll should always have."

Handel - Water Music - Fireworks Music (Speakers Corner)

Composed in the spirit of the Baroque, the Water Music and Royal Fireworks Music were written by the highly regarded George Frideric Handel on commissions from Kings George I and George II of England.

The remarkable première of the Water Music - a suite of instrumental airs, fanfares, dances, and other delights - was played in 1717 by musicians in a barge who entertained the King and his entourage on a banquet held on board the royal barge which travelled up and down the river Thames. According to reports at the time, Handel's new work was greeted with unanimous acclaim.

Music appeared equally fitting for the solemn but festive commemoration of a peace treaty. The Royal Fireworks Music - originally scored for brass, oboes and bassoons, plus timpani and the bizarre serpent horn - was composed in 1749 for the victory gala in London's Green Park celebrating the Peace of Aix-La-Chapelle.

In both pieces Georg Szell and the London Symphony Orchestra conjure up the full splendour of baroque tonality. Orchestra and conductor are clearly in a festive mood. The strings show rare form, lush and radiant. The brass are brilliant but never shrill. The atmosphere is transparent, the spatial effects are impressive.

For the outstanding quality of this recording we are indebted not least to its inspired recording engineer, Kenneth E. Wilkinson.

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Rodrigo - Concierto Andaluz / Marriner - Academy of St. Martin in the Fields (Speakers Corner) (Awaiting Repress)

The frenetic applause with which both the public and the experts greeted the Concierto de Aranjuez for guitar and orchestra, composed in 1940, is certainly astounding - one would have thought that 20th-century music was dominated chiefly by composers of twelve-tone music and the avantguardists. Rodrigo, however, remained faithful to the Classical three-movement form, employed a late-Romantic orchestral colouring, and followed in the tradition of Spanish composers who, perhaps more than any others, won their inspiration from the folkmusic of their native country.

The whole work is full of the exotic magic of Spanish folkmusic, whereby the rhythmic drive of the first movement - reminiscent of clicking castanets - is particularly fascinating. Fortunately not only the composer but also the conductor and orchestra have taken care that the gentle tones produced by the world famous guitarist Pepe Romero are clearly to be heard.

In addition, the listener is treated to a performance of the rarely recorded Concierto Andaluz for four guitars, composed in 1967. Once again the Romeros demonstrate that they are not only amazingly virtuosic musicians but are also worthy dedicatees of this unique work.

Last but not least, PHILIPS balance engineers have produced a superb recording: Rodrigo himself was absolutely delighted with it - and this opinion one can well endorse.
