    Screaming Life/Fopp

    From the depths of the Sub Pop archives comes a reissue of
    Soundgarden's thunderous opening salvo, Screaming Life, plus bonus
    tracks from the Fopp EP and Sub Pop 200 compilation. This reissue
    marks the first time these tracks will be available digitally, and their first
    appearance on vinyl since the original, late-80s pressings (notwithstanding
    a long-gone, late-'90s repress of Screaming Life). All tracks have been
    remastered by Seattle studio wizard and producer of the original Screaming
    Life and Sub Pop 200 sessions, Jack Endino, who had this to say about
    it:


    "Ah, Screaming Life, Soundgarden's debut, and one of the first real
    records I made for anyone outside my own band. I already knew
    Soundgarden pretty well, since they and Skin Yard had shared the stage
    many times in Seattle's tiny club scene circa 1985-1986. Soon after
    opening Reciprocal Recording in July 1986, there I was with Soundgarden,
    trying to make the most of our eight tracks. Somehow, we found room
    for all of Matt Cameron's 'bonus tubs,' Hiro's primordial Fender bass,
    and a whopping four tracks to share between Kim Thayil's mad guitar
    psychedelia and Chris Cornell's still-expanding voice. 'Nothing To Say'
    was the song that made us all look at each other and go, 'uh, holy crap,
    how did we do this?'


    Stuff started happening. A&M came calling. SST agreed to put out
    their next record. But Soundgarden was not finished with Sub Pop. They
    contributed 'Sub Pop Rock City,' about Seattle's then-rising 'grunge'
    scene, to the Sub Pop 200 comp; and they threw everyone a curveball
    with Steve Fisk-produced Ohio Players and Green River covers on the
    Fopp EP.


    The glorious vistas of a major label future awaited them. To quote Kim
    from an old interview, 'It was karma, it was dogma, it was dog breath.'"

    Green River

    If anything, CCR's third album Green River represents the full flower of their classic sound initially essayed on its predecessor, Bayou Country. One of the differences between the two albums is that Green River is tighter, with none of the five-minute-plus jams that filled out both their debut and Bayou Country, but the true key to its success is a peak in John Fogerty's creativity. Although CCR had at least one cover on each album, they relied on Fogerty to crank out new material every month. He was writing so frequently that the craft became second-nature and he laid his emotions and fears bare, perhaps unintentionally. Perhaps that's why Green River has fear, anger, dread, and weariness creeping on the edges of gleeful music. This was a band that played rock & roll so joyously that they masked the, well, sinister undercurrents in Fogerty's songs. Bad Moon Rising has the famous line Hope you've got your things together/Hope you're quite prepared to die, but that was only the most obvious indication of Fogerty's gloom. Consider all the other dark touches: the Sinister purpose knocking at your door; the chaos of Commotion; the threat of death in Tombstone Shadow; you only return to the idyllic Green River once you get lost and realize the world is smolderin'. Even the ballads have a strong melancholy undercurrent, highlighted by Lodi, where Fogerty imagines himself stuck playing in dead-end towns for the rest of his life. Not the typical thoughts of a newly famous rock & roller, but certainly an indication of Fogerty's inner tumult. For all its darkness, Green River is ultimately welcoming music, since the band rocks hard and bright and the melancholy feels comforting, not alienating.

    The Evergreen Point Floating Bridge connects Seattle, Washington (USA) to the Bellevue area across Lake Washington. Since opening in 1963, its 2,285 meters (7,497 ft) makes it the longest floating bridge in the world. The structure includes 33 pre-stressed concrete pontoons averaging 110 meters (360 ft) long and 18 meters (60 ft) wide.


    SOLID LONG-GRAIN COPPER (LGC) CONDUCTORS: Solid conductors eliminate strand-interaction distortion. Evergreen's solid Long-Grain Copper allows a smoother and clearer sound than cables using regular OFHC (Oxygen-Free High-Conductivity) copper. OFHC is a general metal industry specification regarding "loss" without any concern for distortion. LGC has fewer oxides within the conducting material, less impurities, less grain boundaries, and definitively better performance.


    FOAMED-POLYETHYLENE INSULATION: Any solid material adjacent to a conductor is actually part of an imperfect circuit. Wire insulation and circuit board materials all absorb energy (loss). Some of this energy is stored and then released as distortion. Evergreen uses air-filled Foamed-Polyethylene Insulation on both conductors because air absorbs next to no energy and Polyethylene is low-loss and has a benign distortion profile. Thanks to all the air in Foamed-PE, it causes much less of the out-of-focus effect common to other materials.


    METAL-LAYER NOISE-DISSIPATION SYSTEM (NDS): 100% shield coverage is easy. Preventing captured RF Interference from modulating the equipment's ground reference requires AQ's Noise-Dissipation System. Noise-Dissipation System prevents a significant amount of RFI from reaching the equipment's ground plane.


    ASYMMETRICAL DOUBLE-BALANCED GEOMETRY: Purpose designed for single-ended applications, Asymmetrical Double-Balanced Geometry offers a relatively lower impedance on the ground for a richer, and more dynamic experience. While many single-ended cable designs use a single path for both the ground and the shield, Double-Balanced designs separate the two for cleaner, quieter performance.

    Al Green Explores Your Mind (Pure Pleasure)

    By the time of 1974's Al Green Explores Your Mind, this version of the Memphis sound was the production style for only a handful of artists. Producer Willie Mitchell used a lighter touch for his most famous artist, and it's all but crafted into the Al Green sound. Despite his skills, Green never falls into mannerism here and gives heartfelt and cogent vocals rooted in intelligence and technique. Sha-La-La (Make Me Happy), although lyrically slight, has the artist's charisma and Mitchell's pop chops. Take Me to the River, with perfect backing from Hi Rhythm and a horn and string arrangement, finds Green at his most persuasive. The last track, School Days, has Green longing for a school girlfriend and despite the potentially sappy sentiment, it works like a charm. The greatness of Al Green Explores Your Mind comes from a collective effort, including James Mitchell's dreamlike string arrangements and the always skilled backing vocals of Rhodes, Chalmers & Rhodes. But the biggest draw here is Green's phrasing and intimate vocals, making the record an extremely strong effort.

    About Pure Pleasure



    At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.



    During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.



    A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.



    We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.



    We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.



    To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Weezer's self-titled third album, collectively known as the Green Album, nearly never came to pass. The band had all but broken apart, with leader Rivers Cuomo choosing to go back to college and the other members dismayed at the initial reception to 1996's Pinkerton. Persuaded at the turn of the century to return to the concert stage, the foursome launched one of the most enduring comeback stories in history, and in the process, penned 75 songs, the choicest of which grace 2001's concise, tightly played Green Album.


    Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed on 180 gram LP at RTI, Mobile Fidelity's reissue presents the music with by far the most dynamic range it's ever enjoyed. Cars icon Ric Ocasek's production comes into fuller relief, with guitar notes ringing with front-to-back depth and superb imaging. Cuomo's singing gains focus and clarity, and the rhythms that help give the tunes their incessant catchiness are better defined, with the low end finally present.


    That nearly everything on Green Album-from the cover to the producer to sonics-reflects those of Weezer's blockbuster debut isn't merely coincidence. The quartet, not yet realizing that Pinkerton had already become a cult classic (and, soon after, would be hailed as one of the most prized albums of its generation), intentionally pursued a back-to-basics approach that echoed its roots. Unadorned simplicity, skyscraper-sized hooks, and short-but-sweet arrangements are the hallmarks here, each a signpost on how rock albums can work their way into a listener's head and provide limitless satisfaction.


    Of course, however crucial, the music is just one component in Weezer's arsenal. Akin to its sibling efforts, Green Album wouldn't be the same devoid of Cuomo's lyrics, which exude charming personality and boyish awkwardness. Absent is the heart-on-a-sleeve obviousness of the fare of Pinkerton. The material here echoes with a related emotional universality whereby romantic yearning, fear of rejection, and getaway fantasies spark with the winking promise of enthusiasm and attainment. There's a reason every passage remains so accessible; playfulness and wryness abound. Power-pop efforts don't come more perfect.

    Every March 17 on St. Patrick's Day, New York City merely paints a green line down the center of its Fifth Avenue parade route-a stunt easily pulled off by any city-but only Chicago dyes an entire river the perfect shade of emerald green to honor Irish culture. Why green? Thanks to Ireland's lush vegetation, the island is often lovingly referred to as the Emerald Isle. To the Irish, a green display of pride is not to be taken lightly. In the United States, even those of non-Irish descent know to wear green clothing on St. Patrick's Day, or else be playfully pinched by an Irish friend or colleague! But it's one thing to don a green shirt or tie, another thing altogether to transform a 156-mile long river. Chicago's Stephen M. Bailey, the man who orchestrated the transformation, boasted that he'd turn the River Chicago into the River Shannon (Ireland's longest) for a day, and, eventually, he did.


    There was no specific recipe for successfully dyeing a river. A bit of trial and error was required. Initially, over 100 pounds of dye was used, and the river stayed green for a week! In the second year, 50 pounds of dye kept the river green for three full days. In the third year, it was found that using 25 pounds of dye would turn the river green for a single day. Two years later, environmental concerns led to the formation of a new vegetable-based dye that produces a perfect sea of green and lasts for four or five hours-40 pounds of the stuff does the trick. Following suit across the nation, major canals, minor creeks, city blocks, drinking fountains, and even the Presidential Fountain at the White House are dyed green for St. Patrick's Day-all thanks to the wonderful example set in Chicago.

Similar to Foamed-PE, it is nitrogen-injected to create air pockets. 'Hard' foam is used because the stiffness of the material allows the conductors in the cable to maintain the same relationship with each other along the full length of the cable, thus ensuring that the characteristic impedance of the cable is consistent.

    Absolute Zero

    Absolute Zero is the debut album by Irish quintet, Little Green Cars. Absolute Zero's 48 minutes, crafted in unabashed earnestness with the aid of seasoned epic-producer Markus Dravs (Mumford and Sons' Sigh No More and Babel, Arcade Fire's Neon Bible and The Suburbs, Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto), acts as a soul-bearing report, as guileless as the young five-piece themselves, on the act of simply growing up; a process that requires, at once, so little and so much effort it could explode you from the inside at any moment.


    "This record constantly jumps between two contrasting perspectives: the beauty of a reckless youth and the fear and confusion caused by our ever-pending adulthood," Appleby explains. "It's a hopeful and naïve look at love and life in general, which gives the album its bright days - but also deals with isolation, unrequited love and madness. We wanted to express both a feeling of strength and vulnerability, so the work had to encompass both the light and dark."


    "These are all feelings we've had, as a group or as individuals. We hope this is something people can relate to. That's always been why music has been written; it's a voice for people who don't have a voice. Hopefully someone can find some sort of comfort or solace in this. "


    The band -a group of 20-year-old friends with a habit of waxing deadly serious about their ever-expanding ambitions - convened in 2008 in a bungalow in Stevie Appleby's parents' backyard for as ordinary a reason as any: as the frontman admits sheepishly, they wanted to win a battle of the bands competition. With guitarist Adam O'Regan and bassist Donagh O'Leary friends since primary school, and the rest having met in secondary, the five rehearsed for the gig, at which they promptly lost out to another local band.


    The defeat, however, was surprisingly fuel enough. It inspired them to work harder, to work through their remaining two years of school, during which they produced a massive catalog of demo recordings, blending acoustic and electronic, classical and punk, djembe drums and synth strings. Then, in 2010, not long before graduation, then-rising manager Daniel Ryan found them at one of their sparse live gigs. With just one client already under his wing, he approached the young band with a terrifying, yet exhilarating ultimatum: Do you want to go to university, or do you want to really be in a band?


    "That was the first time we considered looking that far ahead," says guitarist/vocalist/primary songwriter Faye O'Rourke. "We were trying to avoid thinking about the future because of the prospect of college, but " The choice became obvious. And like that, they dove in. For two years they redoubled their efforts, crafting a wide-eyed musical narrative that mirrored their evolution as an ensemble until, inevitably, label suitors began to knock. Since 2011 they've been quietly boiling down those demos into an album - the first they've ever recorded.


    "The main thing I want to hear out of an artist I admire is the truth," says Appleby. "How they really felt. If I'm going to say something, it may as well be the truth." The lengths to which Appleby, O'Rourke and the rest of the band will go to tell that truth have yet to reveal their depth, but a full-steam-ahead debut record is a good place to start. Finally, five years' worth of backyard Garage Band tracks have a name: Absolute Zero.


    The songs of Absolute Zero have only begun to see the light of day, because, as Appleby puts it, "we've always been more interested in recording and writing and experimenting with everything than in touring. [The past five years] was time spent finding our sound, finding ourselves. We've gone through everything, from acoustic guitars to electronic music. We needed the time to grow up as people and as musicians."


    In other words, this is a debut that is a sum total of its creators' ascent to this moment. It is a desperate, under-pillow diary; a painstakingly lettered love note dropped in a locker; a collective, yet very personal, dissertation. On "My Love Took Me Down To The River To Silence Me," O'Rourke is torn between the heartbreak and the healing that comes from being heartbroken, "But my heart burned out til it was no more/still I wait on the ground, I don't know what for/There is a heart in you/where is the heart in me?/This love's killing me, but I want it to." And by its early-morning close, when Appleby asks, "And who will write and who will fight for this man/I know I am?/And if you're running out of space/Please don't erase your time with me," it becomes clear that it's not just love Little Green Cars are grasping at: even amidst an ex-lover's plea for acknowledgement, the search has grown far beyond that.

The album's biggest single was Johnson's slowed-down take on Green's Take Me to the River. Although the religious/sexual imagery is lost in the translation, Johnson does a good job with it. The best track, the brilliantly arranged Watch What You Do to Me has Johnson playing the role of cuckold, and as he sings I carry my piece, everywhere I go, it certainly made him more a menace than romantic balladeer. Total Explosion was Johnson's most successful album at Hi Records and was one of the best in the label's catalog.

    More Songs About Buildings And Food

    The title of Talking Heads' second album, More Songs About Buildings and Food, slyly addressed the sophomore record syndrome, in which songs not used on a first LP are mixed with hastily written new material. If the band's sound seems more conventional, the reason simply may be that one had encountered the odd song structures, staccato rhythms, strained vocals, and impressionistic lyrics once before. Another was that new co-producer Brian Eno brought a musical unity that tied the album together, especially in terms of the rhythm section, the sequencing, the pacing, and the mixing. Where Talking Heads had largely been about David Byrne's voice and words, Eno moved the emphasis to the bass-and-drums team of Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz; all the songs were danceable, and there were only short breaks between them.


    Byrne held his own, however, and he continued to explore the eccentric, if not demented persona first heard on 77, whether he was adding to his observations on boys and girls or turning his Psycho Killer into an artist in Artists Only. Through the first nine tracks, More Songs was the successor to 77, which would not have earned it landmark status or made it the commercial breakthrough it became. It was the last two songs that pushed the album over those hurdles. First there was an inspired cover of Al Green's Take Me to the River; released as a single, it made the Top 40 and pushed the album to gold-record status. Second was the album closer, The Big Country, Byrne's country-tinged reflection on flying over middle America; it crystallized his artist-vs.-ordinary people perspective in unusually direct and dismissive terms, turning the old Chuck Berry patriotic travelogue theme of rock & roll on its head and employing a great hook in the process.

    About Pure Pleasure



    At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.



    During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.



    A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.



    We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.



    We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.



    To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    III Sides To Every Story is the third album by the Boston funk-metal band Extreme, originally released in 1992. It was the follow-up to the very successful Pornograffitti album. III Sides To Every Story was the last album with the band's original line-up: Gary Cherone, Nuno Bettencourt, Pat Badger and Paul Geary.


    The album is structured as a concept album in three sections labeled as sides - a play on the notion of different sides to a story and that of sides of a vinyl album. The sides, mentioned in the song Cupid's Dead as three sides to every story are named Yours, Mine and The Truth, and each features a distinct musical style and lyrical imagery.


    Most of III Sides To Every Story was recorded at New River Studios, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and the orchestral parts were recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London. The single Rest in Peace reached #1 on the Mainstream Rock chart.


    Celebrating the 25th anniversary of this classic album, 2000 copies are pressed on Moss Green vinyl. Individually numbered and strictly limited!

    To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Angus Soundtrack, SRCvinyl is bringing it to vinyl for the first time ever! The album has been mastered for vinyl by Kevin Gray at Coherent Studios and is pressed on limited edition 180 gram vinyl.


    The film's soundtrack accurately reflects the melodic ideas prevalent in the alternative rock scene at the time. Most of the bands perform songs that closely resonate with the themes of the film while keeping a fast yet upbeat tone, a sharp departure from the age of grunge, which had just reached its twilight. (It should be noted that Angus' penchant for flannel and denim, as well as his defeatist persona, are concepts more closely associated with grunge.) However, several key songs are absent in the CD that was released, most notably ''Fade into You'' by Mazzy Star, the song that was played as Angus and Melissa danced, and ''Rubella'' by the Smoking Popes.


    Weezer's initial offering, a song entitled ''Wanda (You're My Only Love)'' (or sometimes just ''Wanda''), was written specifically for the movie but rejected for being ''too much of a strict interpretation of the movie'' and for not sounding enough like what was expected of Weezer at the time. The previously written, more uptempo ''You Gave Your Love to Me Softly'' was used instead, and the rejection of the former song was known to have hurt Weezer's singer and songwriter Rivers Cuomo at the time. Though Weezer never properly recorded ''Wanda'', Cuomo released his 1994 demo of the song (along with the story of the song's submission and rejection) in 2007 on the albumAlone: The Home Recordings of Rivers Cuomo.


    The unique version of ''Am I Wrong'' by Love Spit Love, mixing marching band horns into the original version of the song which interplay well with Richard Butler's raw vocals.


    Green Day contributed ''J.A.R. (Jason Andrew Relva)'', a song written by bassist Mike Dirnt about his friend who died in a car accident when he was 19. This song peaked at number one on the Modern Rock Billboard charts of 1995. This song was later released on their 2001 greatest hits album, International Superhits. Meanwhile, Green Day singer Billie Joe Armstrong co-produced ''Back to You'' by the Riverdales with producer Mass Giorgini, which was featured during the dance sequence at the high prom in the film.


    The music supervisors for Angus were Elliot Cahn and Jeff Saltzman, who, at the time, also managed two of the soundtrack's artists: Green Day and The Muffs.

    Handel - Water Music - Fireworks Music (Speakers Corner)

    Composed in the spirit of the Baroque, the Water Music and Royal Fireworks Music were written by the highly regarded George Frideric Handel on commissions from Kings George I and George II of England.



    The remarkable première of the Water Music - a suite of instrumental airs, fanfares, dances, and other delights - was played in 1717 by musicians in a barge who entertained the King and his entourage on a banquet held on board the royal barge which travelled up and down the river Thames. According to reports at the time, Handel's new work was greeted with unanimous acclaim.



    Music appeared equally fitting for the solemn but festive commemoration of a peace treaty. The Royal Fireworks Music - originally scored for brass, oboes and bassoons, plus timpani and the bizarre serpent horn - was composed in 1749 for the victory gala in London's Green Park celebrating the Peace of Aix-La-Chapelle.



    In both pieces Georg Szell and the London Symphony Orchestra conjure up the full splendour of baroque tonality. Orchestra and conductor are clearly in a festive mood. The strings show rare form, lush and radiant. The brass are brilliant but never shrill. The atmosphere is transparent, the spatial effects are impressive.



    For the outstanding quality of this recording we are indebted not least to its inspired recording engineer, Kenneth E. Wilkinson.

    Norah has taken a new direction on The Fall, experimenting with different sounds and a new set of collaborators, including Jacquire King, a noted producer and engineer who has worked with Kings of Leon, Tom Waits and Modest Mouse.     For this record, I just had a sound in my head, says Norah Jones. I wanted the grooves to be more present and heavy. And I also just wanted to do something different. Ive been hanging with the same group of musicians for a long time, and I thought it was a good time for me to work with different people and experiment a little.


    The result of these experiments is the multiple Grammy Award-winners new album, The Fall. The album is an exciting evolution from her previous three releases, which have sold a combined 36 million copies worldwide. The first obvious change on The Fall is a lengthy list of new collaborators. Producer Jacquire King, who has worked with Kings of Leon, Modest Mouse, and Tom Waits, among others, helped Jones put together a group of musicians, including drummers Joey Waronker (Beck, R.E.M.) and James Gadson (Bill Withers), keyboardist James Poyser (Erykah Badu, Al Green), and guitarists Marc Ribot (Tom Waits, Elvis Costello) and Smokey Hormel (Johnny Cash, Joe Strummer). Jones also joined forces with several notable songwriters on The Fall, including Ryan Adams and Okkervil Rivers Will Sheff, as well as her frequent collaborator Jesse Harris.
