    Twice Shy (Awaiting Repress)

Limited Edition 180 gram red colored vinyl

Originally released in 1989, Twice Shy is the fourth studio offering from Great White and the band's most popular release to date. Driven by the success of their hit cover version of Ian Hunter's "One Bitten Twice Shy" and the original arena rock ballads "The Angel Song" and "House of Broken Love," the album broke into the Top Ten, and along with it's predecessor 1987's Once Bitten, stands as one of the best albums of an era known for its passing fads.

    Under Great White Northern Lights

In the summer of 2007, shortly after the release of their 6th album Icky Thump, The White Stripes headed north of their hometown of Detroit to embark on an ambitious journey across Canada. The plan was to play a show in every province and territory in Canada, from B.C. to Newfoundland to Nunavut. Having never done a tour of Canada, Meg and I thought it was high time to go whole hog, from the ocean to the permafrost explains Jack White. We wanted to play out of the way towns that don't usually get shows, the shows are better, it's better for the people, it's a better experience, it's way more unique, something interesting is going to happen, hopefully.

White called upon filmmaker Emmett Malloy to come and document this trek for the band. Malloy had directed videos for the band in the past, and seemed eager to hit the road with them. Equipped with a couple of 16mm cameras, and a few other documenting devices, the band and crew all headed north. The end result was Under Great White Northern Lights.

Under Great White Northern Lights is a visual and emotional feature length film documenting The White Stripes making their way through Canada and culminating with their 10th Anniversary show in Nova Scotia. The film documents the band playing shows all over Canada; from local bowling alleys, to city buses, and onward to the legendary Savoy Theater for the 10th Anniversary show. A show that turned out to be the longest show the band had ever done on stage together.

The film captures intimate moments of Jack and Meg both on and off stage as they travel through some of the most remote parts of the northern Yukon Territory. Along the way, they have some nice casual conversations about their ten years together, fire cannons, play some of their biggest songs together on stage, and even play a one note show. The cameras were there to capture every waking moment.

What Northern Lights does best is document one of the biggest bands in the world, playing to local crowds in small towns. Some of these towns were so small that many of the locals had no idea who The White Stripes were, they just knew something big was going on in their town. This forced a band that had been together for a decade to go back to a place reminiscent of the first shows they ever played together. For the first time in a long time, no one knew who they were and they had to make a first impression with their music.

The live footage captured in this film shows that Jack and Meg were clearly ready for this. Beyond the live footage, some of the films most memorable moments happen off-stage, offering an insightful look into the very private and complex world that is The White Stripes. It was shortly after this tour that The White Stripes cancelled their fall tour of the U.S., making the ten year anniversary a truly pivotal milestone for this legendary band.

This double 180g vinyl LP set features 16 tracks and serves as the soundtrack to the documentary film of the 2007 Canadian White Stripes tour.

    White Noise Bed

Comprised of guitarist/vocalist Stanton McConnell, drummer Steven Plock, bassist Otto Stuparitz and Tommy Trafton on keyboards, Santah met at the University of Illinois and with their debut full-length record, White Noise Bed, they have assembled a kaleidoscopic opus whose reach extends far beyond the Midwest.

Recorded at the late Jay Bennett's Pieholden Studios, where the band found its niche among the studio's forbearers of psychedelic Americana, White Noise Bed has a yin and yang aesthetic: sometimes sunny and sometimes stormy, but always running on audible elation. The band takes its cues from the power pop greats of the '70s such as The Raspberries and The Cars, and dresses them in a twangy haze, full of clever, lyrical nooks and crannies ala Wilco and Whiskeytown.

Seminal Slowcore Progenitor's Sub Pop Albums Reissued Individually as Deluxe 2LP + CD Editions!

Restored from the Original Masters Complete w/ Additional Singles, Demos, Live Recordings and Peel Sessions!

From 1990-1994, New York City's Codeine were making somnambulant waves on a musical landscape reeling from Sub Pop's better known exports. 1991's Frigid Stars, 1992's Barely Real, and 1994's The White Birch received much critical praise upon release, but Codeine dissolved before any of that hype would carry Low, Bedhead, and the Red House Painters to international acclaim.

All three albums will be subjected to Numero's notoriously elaborate packaging and detailed liner notes, including essays by Sub Pop's Jonathan Poneman, Love Child's Alan Licht, and the Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne and Steven Drozd. The albums have been faithfully restored from the original masters, and are accompanied by a plethora of singles, demos, live recordings, and Peel sessions. Each album will be packaged as a double album with a CD of the same material.

Codeine's third overall release and second full-length, The White Birch, was originally issued in 1994 and would be the band's final offering. Regarded as their best album, the 9-song set is bookended by the murky opener Sea and the contemplative closer Smoking Room with highlights Vacancy and Washed Up in between. 2LP + CD edition features 8 bonus tracks including demos, live takes and Peel sessions.

In support of this great undertaking, Codeine's original line-up of Stephen Immerwahr, John Engle, and Chris Brokaw will be reuniting for a handful of dates in the US and Europe, including All Tomorrow's Parties in both London and Japan, and Primavera in Spain.

Edgar Winter's White Trash (Speakers Corner)

Question: What is whiter than white? There's only one answer: Winter - Edgar Winter. While his equally pale-faced brother Johnny turned towards black music with a country-blues touch (Columbia KCS 9949 and CS 9826), Edgar was inspired by the traditional big-band sound. The brotherly link paid off, for it freed the talented Edgar from having to make strenuous appearances at night in clubs and gave him the chance to join his older brother in the recording studio.

After his successful debut release Entrance, Winter gathered an all-star band around him and entered the studio to record White Trash, which landed a smash hit on the US charts. And no wonder - for these soul rockers give everything in a unique mixture of funk, blues and rock 'n' roll. Right from the first number Give It Everything You Got, a broadly striding rock title with brass, the whole album is bursting with energy and a great atmosphere. Wiry blues with meaty vocals enough to make your hair curl (I've Got News For You) is followed by the demand - in meaty, snapped phrases - for cheerful rock 'n' roll (Keep Playin' That Rock And Roll). And let's not forget the sometimes madly intertwined solo parts, where the musicians really let off steam. A true celebration of rock 'n' roll.

    • Jerry laCroix (vocal, tenor saxophone, harp)

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

The Edgar Winter/Friday Music 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl Series Continues!

Celebrate 4 Decades Of Edgar Winter's White Trash

First Time 180 Gram White Vinyl!

Featuring Guitar Legends: Johnny Winter & Rick Derringer

The legendary rocker and blues statesman Edgar Winter continues to enthrall audiences the world over.
With his unique brand of musical genius and keyboard, sax and vocal prowess, Edgar's style will always be truly
    unmatched in purity and longevity.

While he tours, produces and records non-stop, it's no secret that his live shows have always been top notch
and legendary. In 1972, Edgar Winter along with his band White Trash played a series of shows at the famed Apollo
Theatre and Academy Of Music in New York City, plus the Whisky A Go-Go in L.A. Luckily, Epic Records captured
the prolific event on tape and the amazing album Roadwork was born.

For Roadwork, the artist surely becomes a superstar on this mammoth 2 LP set. Featuring rock and soul classics
like Chuck Berry's Back In the U.S.A. and Otis Redding's I Can't Turn You Loose, plus tunes from his first two
albums like the epic 17 minute version of Tobacco Road, Roadwork proves to be a never ending festival of rock,
blues, gospel and R&B earth shattering performances. The band features his friends like guitar hero Rick Derringer
as well as power vocalist Jerry LaCroix, and of course his late great brother Johnny Winter brings the house down
with his surprise visit on the smash hit Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo.

The masterpiece was also a primer for a lot of rockers who for the first time would be treated to the likes of
musical pioneers like Bobby "Blue" Bland thanks to the late great Jerry LaCroix's shuddering vocal performance
on the album closer Turn On Your Lovelight.

Edgar Winter's artistry is no stranger to the Friday Music label, therefore it is with much honor to announce
the first time 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl release of his classic Edgar Winter's White Trash Roadwork album. For
a very short time, this monumental masterwork is being presented on 180 Gram White Vinyl and featuring the
original gatefold LP artwork, not seen in years in this format.

    Between The Ditches

Roaring out of the southern Indiana foothills comes Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band playing a brand of Americana and Blues that stands alone. Delta blues and hillbilly fervor combine with musical acuity sharp as razor wire, this trio is a force to be reckoned with. Their new album Between The Ditches is a chronicle of this lifestyle. Their fifth album celebrates the growl of a good truck engine, the fiercest passion for their country home and the importance of family.

The uncanny ability to breathe new life into old forms of music gives the Big Damn Band a pedigree many Americana acts would kill for and an ironclad work ethic keeps them on the road playing for the people with hurricane force. Locked in with an audience, the band create their own community and welcome the crowd into it, transporting them away from their troubles to joyous release, the way great musicians have done for centuries. The Rev. J. Peyton, his wife Breezy and distant cousin Aaron "Cuz" Persinger are a living breathing embodiment of the traditions and hard work ethic native to their Brown County, Indiana home.

With a reputation for their incendiary live shows well established, The Big Damn Band set out to make the album that would finally capture the same heat. Recorded at White Arc Studio in Bloomington, Indiana, the album was produced by The Rev. Peyton and Paul Mahern (John Mellencamp, Iggy Pop) and mastered by Brian Lucey (Black Keys, Dr. John, Shins). For previous albums, the band had recorded live, straight through in the same mode as a live show. Between The Ditches came together more slowly, with care. "We approached it saying we were going to make a record this time, not just a recording," explained the Rev. He used a different guitar set up on almost every track, employing two '30s National guitars, a cigar box guitar, a custom shop Gibson flattop 1929 L2 and an Airline map electric guitar. The primary amps are custom Weber amps made by Weber speakers, both are one of a kind.

Between The Ditches features a new level of craftsmanship in both recording technique and songwriting. The guitar playing alone should put the Rev. in the same class with his much revered idols. The songwriting boasts an added maturity and runs the gamut in subject matter from the barn burning, tongue in cheek, "Shut the Screen," (where "It's too dang hot and the bugs are too dang mean") to the evils of strip mining, an issue close to the hearts of this Indiana band in, "Don't Grind It Down." There seems to be a theme expressed throughout the album and stated clearly in their first single "Devils Look Like Angels": "Devil don't live down in hell, the devil's right here doing very well."

    Introducing

As ringleader of great bands The Memories and White Fang, not to mention penning the "Burger TV" theme song for Burger Records, Free Weed (Rikky Gage) has built a sizable indie following that continues to veer mainstream. With Introducing, he is now positioned as ambassador of the legalize-it movement, having crafted a hit-repeat player that splices the freak power illumination of Ween with the catchy spirit of Loser-era Beck. Just look at his face...

The album is themed around Free Weed''s love of marijuana and his digitally well-documented bacchanal lifestyle. No twigs, no seeds to be had, Introducing is all killer, no filler, never sputtering into stoner novelty. This is an album to boost your happiness and lower your inhibitions. The album's pedigree extends to being mastered by Mikey Young, member of requisite Aussie outfit Total Control, with cover art by ever-talented Dustyn Peterman of San Diego art collective Mushroom Necklace (Ty Segall; Thee Oh Sees).

    Last Days and Time

Last Days and Time is the third studio album by American R&B group Earth, Wind & Fire, released in 1972, their debut album on Columbia Records. It was recorded at the legendary Sunset Sound Studios in Hollywood, California, with founder and multi-instrumentalist Maurice White, Verdine White and Philip Bailey.

Due to their live performances it cemented their status as the main funk band and set the stage for the band's blockbuster breakthrough. Songs on the album like Make It With You (originally from Bread) the pre-Brazilian Rhyme powerful funk sax style Power, (which sounds like an early version of Serpentine Fire) and Remember The Children are excellent examples of the great songs and albums they have made during their career.

This is the eponymous debut studio album by the American Rock band the Modern Lovers, originally released in 1976. Six tracks (Roadrunner, Astral Plane, Old World, Pablo Picasso, She Cracked and Someone I Care About) were produced by John Cale.

The Modern Lovers were formed in 1970 by teenage singer, songwriter, guitarist Jonathan Richman, augmented with Jerry Harrison (keyboards), Ernie Brooks (bass) and David Robinson (drums), with Richman's friend and original band member John Felice joining them occasionally.

Before Kevin Rowland launched Dexys Midnight Runners he was the lead singer in this great punk band from the Midlands. Classic amphetamine punk. They were supposed to be making tapes for an album but they split before anything happened and a supposed deal with Bronze was scuppered by Mr Rowland. Around mid 77 they lost Heather and Joe 90 (on Kevin's insistence probably) and acquired a new drummer, Bob Peach, and guitarist Keith Rimell and became virtually a different band as Mr Rowland again sought to jump ship.. And lastly from Rowland himself these words from Mojo October 2001. "There was no doubt in my mind that I was at least as passionate and angry and as from the street as any punk rock singer you could name. But it was wrong for me to try to be part of someone else's thing."

    Anthems (Limited Edition Colored Vinyl)

Limited Edition Purple & White ''Haze'' Colored Vinyl

Anthems, Anthrax's eight-track EP that pays tribute to the classic songs by some of Anthrax's favorite bands from the 1970s. Anthems's track listing features Rush's ''Anthem,'' Thin Lizzy's ''Jailbreak,'' ''TNT'' by AC/DC, Boston's ''Smokin','' ''Big Eyes'' by Cheap Trick, Journey's ''Keep on Runnin,'' as well as the album version and a special remix of Anthrax's ''Crawl'' from the band's critically-acclaimed 2011 album Worship Music.

Said the band's vocalist Joey Belladonna, ''These are all bands I grew up with and have listened to forever. It's just great music. I had fun singing these songs and I was happy recording together with Anthrax, doing classic rock songs. Fun stuff!''

On Boston's ''Smokin','' Anthrax brought in a special guest to play keyboards - Fred Mandel, who has played with Alice Cooper, Queen, Elton John, Cheap Trick, Supertramp and on Pink Floyd's The Wall. About the track, drummer Charlie Benante said, ''If ever there were a perfect first album, it's Boston's first album. The harmony leads they did would later be heard by Iron Maiden, which of course would lead to thrash metal.''

Anthems was produced by Anthrax, Jay Ruston and Rob Caggiano

Between February 1973 and October 1977, Queen recorded six sessions for the BBC - twenty four new and alternative recordings spanning four albums.

They revisited nineteen different songs in all: My Fairy King (the first Queen song ever to be broadcast on radio), Liar, Son And Daughter, Doing All Right, Great King Rat, Modern Times Rock'n'Roll, Ogre Battle, Nevermore, White Queen, See What A Fool I've Been (a song that never appeared on any Queen studio album), Now I'm Here, Stone Cold Crazy, Flick Of The Wrist, Tenement Funster, Spread Your Wings, My Melancholy Blues, It's Late, the only known studio recording of their dramatically different full-band 'fast' arrangement of We Will Rock You and the song that became their very first single Keep Yourself Alive.

All six sessions have been remastered and feature here together for the very first time.

Archive From 1959: The Billy Childish Story

Billy Childish has been releasing records, painting, writing poetry and generally doing his own thing for the past 32 years. He first took to the stage back in October of 1977 with the seminal punk garage band The Pop Rivets. They split after two years and from there he joined The Milkshakes along with fellow Pop Riveter Bruce Brand and local lads Micky Hampshire and Russ Wilkins. After that came Thee Mighty Caesars, Thee Headcoats, The Buff Medways and right up to date with his two current ensembles The Musicians Of The British Empire and The Chatham Singers.

The 51 track compilation Archive From 1959: The Billy Childish Story takes a look back at the more rock 'n' roll aspects of Billy's musical career which is why there's no spoken word or poetry and many of its tracks have been unavailable for ages. In amongst these more well known bands are tracks he recorded solo and with other artists like The Delmonas, Thee Headcoatees, Singing Loins and Kyra Rubella.

Over the years Billy has been championed by lots of great bands and musicians including Beck, Mudhoney and Kurt Cobain and more recently by Eddie Vedder and The White Stripes. Even with that praise Billy has been largely ignored by the music press in this country which is really surprising as he has now released over 120 albums.

    Barely Real

Seminal Slowcore Progenitor's Sub Pop Albums Reissued Individually as Deluxe 2LP + CD Editions!

Restored from the Original Masters & Complete w/ Additional Singles, Demos, Live Recordings and Peel Sessions!

Codeine's second release, the 6-song EP Barely Real, was originally issued in 1992. Several of the songs from the Barely Real recording sessions were rejected and would be re-recorded for the band's final album The White Birch. Features the David Grubbs solo cut W and a cover of MX-80 Sound's Promise of Love. 2LP + CD edition features 7 bonus tracks including demos and alternate takes.

In support of this great undertaking, Codeine's original line-up of Stephen Immerwahr, John Engle, and Chris Brokaw will be reuniting for a handful of dates in the US and Europe, including All Tomorrow's Parties in both London and Japan, and Primavera in Spain.

    Generation Indigo

At the end of 2010, Poly Styrene, the unforgettable frontwoman and iconic face of the seminal U.K. punk band X-ray Spex announced her return to the music scene with the album Generation Indigo produced by Youth (The Verve, Killing Joke, The Fireman, Edwyn Collins).

Poly Styrene remains a genuine icon and one of the main influences on the Riot Grrri scenes with bands like Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Gossip, LeTigre and others recognizing her fiery, irrepressible presence. With her great self-styled image, brilliantly sharp lyrics and powerful presence, Poly's indomitable spirit still inspires.

Generation Indigo kicks off with the mighty, power-pop of I Luv Ur Sneakers and maintains the quick pace with first single Virtual Boyfriend before then moving into dubstep territories on the title track Generation Indigo. The album takes in everything from neo-X-ray Spex punk rock on Thrash City and L.U.V to the Trojan-reggae infused grooves of No Rockefeller, Code Pink Dub and Colour Blind whilst stand out songs, Thrash City and White Gold attest to the power of Poly's soaring vocals. Poly showcases humorous musings on pop culture and fashion whilst also tackling heavier subject matter with her politically aware and intelligent lyrics.

Of Mice & Men are one of the largest bands on the Rise Records roster. They've spent the past couple of years growing into a well-respected rock act, earning praise from critics, their peers, and even their icons. They've sold over 830,000 albums in the US alone, they've had atop 5 debut on the Billboard Top 200, and they have been busy touring arenas and amphitheaters with the likes of Linkin Park, Slipknot,Marilyn Manson, Rise Against, A Day To Remember and Bring Me The Horizon. They've graced the covers of multiple publications(Revolver, Alternative Press, Kerrang!, Rock Sound, Metal Hammer, Blunt), and have constantly been able to nurture and develop a rabid following that feels more like a family than a fan base.

The band took a recent break from touring and recorded two brand new singles, Unbreakable and Back To Me. Both songs were produced by Howard Benson (My Chemical Romance, Daughtry, All American Rejects), and the result is 2 very powerful tracks that have quickly become fan favorites. Both songs have had great success on all of the streaming services (Unbreakable has over 5,042,374 streams& Back To Me has over 2,075,738 streams).

You Know I'm No Good/Shakin' All Over

New music from the ''Queen of Rockabilly'', Ms. Wanda Jackson. In an era when rock and roll and rockabilly was dominated by men, Jackson was a groundbreaker who more than held her own with a ripping voice like no other and hard-headed songs about no-nonsense female protagonists. Her career has spanned rockabilly, rock and roll, country and gospel and she's shared stages with all the greats from Elvis Presley to Jerry Lee Lewis.

The first two songs from the Wanda Jackson / Jack White recording sessions will be released on vinyl on January 26. The Third Man Records-released tracks will feature Jackson's cover of Amy Winehouse's ''You Know I'm No Good'' and 1960s British rock band Johnny Kidd and the Pirates' ''Shakin' All Over.''

The Queen of Rockabilly went to Nashville in November to record with White, who has produced albums for the Von Bondies, Whirlwind Heat, the Greenhornes and Dexter Romweber Duo. He also produced country legend Loretta Lynn's Grammy Award-winning album, Van Lear Rose, in 2004.

    Live In San Francisco 1971

Located 40-odd miles west of Detroit, Ann Arbor was a cauldron of social change in the '60s. Radical politics, courtesy of Students for a Democratic Society and John Sinclair's White Panther Party, mixed with a vibrant music scene which featured adventurous acts like Iggy Pop and the Psychedelic Stooges. In the midst of this fervor, local musician George Frayne IV felt the urge to form a country swing/boogie band, of all things. Cobbling together the name Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen from two old sci-fi film serials, Frayne and his compatriots began playing at The Canterbury House and other clubs around town beginning in 1967. After a few years, the band felt the need for a bigger platform prompting a move to San Francisco where they found kindred spirits and many opportunities for live work.

High profile opening gigs and a glowing piece in Rolling Stone led to an opportunity to perform live on KSAN, a pioneer of "Underground FM" radio. Reflecting on the evening, the Commander said, "We had a great time, and anyone could see there was something really going on here-and that was probably why that was the most honest of all our recordings." Recorded in one of KSAN's offices direct to quarter inch tape, it captures a brilliant performance from the band despite the Bayside bacchanal that was happening around them. And what a band! The Commander's pumping piano racing alongside Bill Kirchen's Joe-Maphis-on-steroids guitar led the rest of the band through a set of originals mixed with classic songs from their club days. Working from the original analog tapes, Sundazed has painstakingly mastered this historic performance.

    Live May 11, 1968

Blessed with one of the best live recording qualities one can hear from '60s efforts -- especially considering that H.P. Lovecraft was never a major success -- Live May 11, 1968 provides a reasonable alternate way for the curious to find out what the shouting was all about. Split almost evenly between first and second album material, and featuring then-new bassist Jeff Boyan (brought in to replace Jerry McGeorge), this release shows that the quintet certainly had something.

Edwards and Michaels' lead vocals work great together live -- their training and earlier studio experience showing well -- and the whole band tackles the spirit of the times to a T. Two standout performances are the one-two punch of The White Ship and At the Mountain of Madness, both of which also make for the perfect tribute to the original Lovecraft himself. Occasional introductory comments surface from Edwards, but otherwise the five just get it all together and take off -- and do so quite well.

    Singles 1966-1969

Sundazed is proud to release The Velvet Underground Singles 196669, a 7 x 7 single box set honoring the legendary New York combo's 7 vinyl output in their rare mono versions. The set features exact reproductions of Velvet Underground singles, two of them with their original picture sleeves. The singles are packaged in a distinctively designed box, along with rare vintage photos and new liner notes by Rolling Stone's David Fricke (who also penned the acclaimed notes for the historic 1995 Velvets CD box set Peel Slowly and See).

The Velvet Underground whose membership included Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison, Maureen Tucker, Doug Yule and Nico introduced numerous sonic and thematic innovations that laid much of the groundwork for punk and alternative rock. Although they're now acknowledged as one of the most influential bands in rock history, during their existence the Velvets barely registered on mainstream radar, and were often reviled by mainstream observers as well as hippie-era arbiters of cool. But, as Fricke writes in the new set's liner notes, Somewhere, in another rock & roll universe, the Velvet Underground are more than a legendary band. They are stars, with hit singles, the original seven-inch masterpieces inside this box.

Although they never came close to scoring a hit, the Velvet Underground was ideally suited to the 7 single format. The Velvet Underground were a great singles band, David Fricke notes, adding that the Velvets invented modern rock with searing guitar distortion, throbbing improvisation and brutally realistic tales of life on the wild side. But they did it all in these classic pop songscompact miracles of raw drive, intimate beauty and Top 40 ecstasy, heard again in the original, thrilling mono single mixes.

The seven singles included in The Velvet Underground Singles 196669 comprise the four Velvets singles originally released in the U.S. on the Verve and MGM labels, plus an additional pair of singles that were prepared for release but never made it to the marketplace and a special radio-only promotional single. The singles feature alternate mono versions that differ in significant ways from the songs' better-known stereo album versions. For instance, the band's 1966 debut single All Tomorrow's Parties appears here in a special mono edit that amplifies the song's melodic beauty and sonic tension, and a mono mix of their sophomore single Sunday Morning emphasizes the song's haunting quality. Meanwhile, the mono single version of White Light/White Heat exemplifies the vintage Velvets' stark, distortion-laden fury, while a mono edit of What Goes On accentuates that song's inherent pop jangle.

The Velvet Underground Singles 196669 also includes two unissued singles, one with a never-released pairing of White Light/White Heat backed by I Heard Her Call My Name, and the other with Temptation Inside Your Heart and Stephanie Says, recorded in the waning days of the band's classic Reed/Cale/Morrison/Tucker lineup and unheard by the public for nearly two decades thereafter. The set's seventh single is a reproduction of a vintage promotional disc, a two-and-a-half minute radio spot promoting the band's eponymous third album and featuring legendary disc jockey Bill Rosko Mercer, with excerpts from Im Set Free, What Goes On and Beginning to See the Light, as well as a picture sleeve with an un-airbrushed variation on the album's iconic cover art.

By presenting the Velvets as a singles band, The Velvet Underground Singles 196669 shows, in David Fricke's words, rock history the way it should have been: the Velvet Underground as the New York Beatles, guaranteed to blow up your radio and your mind.
