Under The Western Freeway (20th Anniversary Edition) (Pre-Order)

Double LP Pressed On Sky Blue & Green Vinyl

Friendship Fever is working closely with Jason Lytle of Grandaddy to give this seminal album the deluxe treatment it deserves. It will include the beautifully re-mastered original album intact, as well as an extra LP featuring unreleased demos from 1997 that include sketches of songs that became legendary Grandaddy tracks, like "Bjork ELO Xanadu and the Birth of Chartsengrafs" and the fan-favorite "For The Dishwasher." We also have access to a multi-tracked, live, 1997 rehearsal recorded before the band's first trip to SXSW, which we plan to offer as a pre-order bonus cassette. Grandaddy was meticulous about documenting their early years and has also provided folders of raw original artwork elements for Under the Western Freeway, candid photographs, original flyer artwork, tour logs, doodles, and much more. New liner notes will be written by Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals. Our hope is that this release serves as an unparalleled time-capsule of this seminal Central-Valley California masterpiece. Ahead of its time, sitting peacefully alone in the universe.

    Yours Truely, The Commuter (Granddaddy)

After 15 years at the helm of Grandaddy, the Modesto, California quintet whose celebrated five-album run started as a project in Lytle's bedroom and took him around the world, Jason Lytle returns with a new collection of songs that are at once a continuation of and elaboration on the musical and lyrical ideas he explored in that band. The title, Yours Truly, The Commuter, tells it all: songs about the treks we all make, from one state to another, from inner lives to outer, and the tolls those travels take. Musically, the dreamy soundscapes mirror the dramatic environment of Lytle's newly-adopted Montana, where the record was written and recorded, while the twang of central California farmland remains in the inflection and phrasings of the Modesto native's unmistakable voice. Electronic flourishes collide with acoustic guitars and soulful piano parts, recreating Lytle's signature electro-fi atmospheres.

I wrote all the songs, I engineered the whole thing, I recorded it, I played all the instruments, this is what I do. - Jason Lytle

    The Sophtware Slump

The Control Group is proud to release the first 3 albums by Grandaddy on vinyl. Under The Western Freeway has never been released on vinyl in the U S. and The Sophtware Slump and Sumday are both long out-of-print collectors gems.

Guided by Jason Lyttle's vision of spacey, mid-fi country-rock, Modesto, CA's Grandaddy unites a mess of guitar-based, late-90's fringe-music into coherent statements about humanity and technology that at times sounds a lot like OK Computer or a lower-fidelity Soft Bulletin.

Mixed in an unselfconscious manner, these influences underline Lyttle's desire to have the music convey the era's confusion. So the epic mid-tempo opener He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's the Pilot recalls the stilted pace of Paranoid Android, Broken Household Appliance National Forest is a metaphorically lumbering rocker whose sounds spill over like punky stoners doing Black Sabbath, and Chartsengrafs rocks out in first-rate Vivadixie fashion. The Sophtware Slump is the sum of its grand parts.

The Trials Of Van Occupanther (10th Anniversary Edition) (Awaiting Repress)

10th Anniversary Edition On 180-Gram Gold Vinyl

Includes A B2 Pull-Out Poster, Handwritten Lyrics & Previously Unseen Photos

Comes With A Special Bonus 7 With 2 Unreleased Songs

Limited To Only 1000 Copies For North America

This Autumn Midlake will celebrate the 10th anniversary of The Trials of Van Occupanther with a deluxe reissue via Bella Union on 180g gold vinyl, complete with a B2 pull-out poster, handwritten lyrics and previously unseen photos. The cover artwork has been reimagined in a fittingly flushed, hallucinatory painting by neo-impressionist (and pavement-scorching skateboarder) Brian Lotti. The original album will be accompanied by a special bonus 7" featuring two previously unreleased tracks, the plaintive rolling lament of "The Fairest Way" and the revelatory psychedelic swirl of "Festival," two tracks recorded before original vocalist Tim Smith departed the band.

In 2006, Van Occupanther was hailed as an instant classic and over the course of the next year proved to be the band's commercial breakthrough. While their debut, 2004's Bamnan and Slivercork, had drawn acclaim alongside comparisons to Grandaddy and Radiohead, Midlake looked further afield and deeper within for the follow-up. Suffused with a romantic yearning for the simpler life, this was a record pitched between 1871, 1971 and somewhere out of time: between Henry David Thoreau and Neil Young's After the Gold Rush, between 1970s Laurel Canyon thinking and a longing for something more mysterious. Rich reserves of wistful melody, dreamy horns, rolling guitars and plaintive pianos reflect its elusive, idiosyncratic narratives: a couple long to be robbed by bandits so they can start anew, an outcast scientist ponders his pariah status, a woman chases a frisky deer, a river leads who knows where yet leaves you little choice but to follow

Famous admirers included Thom Yorke, Beck, The Flaming Lips, Paul Weller, James Dean Bradfield, St Vincent, actor/skateboarder Jason Lee and The Chemical Brothers, and the album went on to secure high placings in the end-of-year polls. Since then, their influence has perhaps been felt in the breakthrough of many a band or singer at one with the stuff of beards, bucolic yearning and blissful West Coast harmonies, from Fleet Foxes to Band of Horses, The Low Anthem, Jonathan Wilson, Matthew E White and beyond.

Not that Midlake stood still to lap up the praise: a band acutely attuned to nature's shifts, they embraced change. In 2010 they ventured into darker psych-folk thickets for The Courage of Others and backed John Grant on his celebrated breakthrough album, Queen of Denmark. When Tim Smith subsequently departed, guitarist/singer Eric Pulido stepped up to the lead vocal role for 2013's freshly exploratory Antiphon. Since then, Pulido and various Midlake members have embarked on a new musical project with a cast of all-stars including members of Grandaddy, Franz Ferdinand, Band of Horses and Travis, for an album due for release next year. All of this serves to remind us what fertile seeds were sown with The Trials of Van Occupanther: a modern classic, made of vintage craft and timeless magic.

    Belafonte At Carnegie Hall

Mastered By Ryan Smith At Sterling Sound From The Original 3-Track Analog Tapes

200-Gram Double LP, Plating By Gary Salstrom, Pressing At Quality Record Pressings!

Old-School Tip-On Heavyweight Gatefold Jacket By Stoughton Printing

AllMusic.com writes: The grandaddy of all live albums, this double LP set captures the excitement of a Harry Belafonte concert at the height of his popularity. Sampled from two consecutive performances of identical material, Belafonte at Carnegie Hall was an anomaly at a time when only comedy albums were recorded outside of the studio environment. It wasn't the first live album ever made, but it was certainly the first to be a major financial and artistic success. It stayed on the best-selling album charts for over three years and remained in print until RCA discontinued pressing LPs.

Well, wait no more if you haven't heard this marvelous record. We've gone all out for this deluxe reissue. Starting with premier mastering by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound from the original analog tapes. Then plating and presssing by Gary Salstrom and the crew at Quality Record Pressings, where the finest quality LPs in the world are pressed. But it doesn't stop there: We've enhanced the original studio photography and wrapped up the whole package in a deluxe old-school tip-on gatefold jacket from Stoughton Printing!

Belafonte's mastery in front of an audience was never better displayed than here, a mastery that resulted in him becoming one of the most popular concert draws in history. Producer Bob Bollard and orchestra leader Bob Corman deftly integrated the 47-piece orchestra into the performance but knew when to lie back to let Belafonte sing, accompanied by a small combo of two guitars, bass, and percussion. The concert is divided in three sections: Moods of the American Negro, In the Caribbean, and Around the World. All the hits are here: Day O, Jamaica Farewell, Mama Look a Boo Boo, and others, plus calypso, folk songs, chain gang songs, spirituals, and songs from other lands, representing a veritable best-of package of Belafonte's first decade with RCA Victor.

From the opening trumpet fanfare and brief orchestral overture to the epic 12-minute version of Matilda (which set a standard for audience participation), the album never lets up. It is exciting, poignant, thrilling, intimate, and at times, spontaneously hilarious. Have a seat, sip a beverage and enjoy!

    Breach

The Kissaway Trail list the likes of Sonic Youth, Grandaddy, Daniel Johnston, Pixies and The Beach Boys as being their main influences, though in their native Denmark, where they have recently taken off massively due to their incendiary live shows, the band have quickly developed a unique sound of their own. Their debut was followed by Sleep Mountain, released in 2011 on Bella Union. Breach is the band's Yep Roc Records debut and features the single Nørrebro, an ode to the part of Copenhagen, where the band resides.

    Dark Night Of The Soul

Dark Night Of The Soul is an album by audio auteur Danger Mouse and the already much-missed Sparklehorse. The record sees the pair joined by the following remarkable roll call of guests: The Flaming Lips, Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals), Jason Lytle (Grandaddy), Julian Casablancas (The Strokes), Black Francis (The Pixies), Iggy Pop, David Lynch, James Mercer (The Shins/Broken Bells), Nina Persson (The Cardigans), Suzanne Vega and Vic Chesnutt.

Rumors of this mysterious collaborative project began to circulate in early 2009 sparking widespread anticipation and excitement. Now, following months of talks, Danger Mouse and EMI announce that Dark Night Of The Soul will be released worldwide.

While this beautiful, haunting record being made widely and legitimately available is undoubtedly a cause for celebration, the news is shadowed by sadness following the recent passing of Mark Linkous, who released and performed under the Sparklehorse pseudonym. Dark Night Of The Soul will now stand as a defacto tribute to this well-loved, stunningly talented yet often-overlooked artist.

In addition to be featured on two songs, celebrated film director David Lynch has created a series of original photographs for Dark Night Of The Soul adding a spectacular visual dimension that will be incorporated in to the artwork for this already unparalleled project.

A Rainer Ptacek Tribute: The Inner Flame

Fire Records is proud to be reissuing the complete works of Rainer Ptacek, the phenomenal and much beloved slide guitarist from Tucson, Arizona, who originated Giant Sand's sound from the band's inception, as well as creating many remarkable recordings as a solo artist and with his own band, Das Combo, before succumbing to brain cancer on November 12, 1997.

The reissues start with The Inner Flame, a compilation of accomplished and remarkably diverse artists who were brought together to honor Rainer's inspirational work, featuring talents such as Robert Plant & Jimmy Page, Emmylou Harris, Evan Dando, PJ Harvey, Victoria Williams, Vic Chesnutt, Jonathan Richman, Madeleine Peyroux and of course Giant Sand.

Originally released in 1997, the album was conceived as both a tribute and benefit album, with the proceeds going towards Ptacek's medical bills. Reissued now as a celebration of his remarkable life and extraordinary talent, extra tracks have been added by the likes of Lucinda Williams, Grandaddy, Chuck Prophet, John Wesley Harding and Calexico's Joey Burns & John Convertino.

We offer up this new version to pay tribute and celebrate the man, the likes of whom I've yet to ever encounter again, and allowing a glimpse now of what he had done here on the planet and to share that embrace for ever having known him at all.

The best way here to sum up the man is perhaps by his own quote. Near the end, during his final interview, when asked the impossible question of what he thinks we are all doing here in this life, Rainer answered without hesitation: to love away the pain.

The Control Group is proud to release the first 3 albums by Grandaddy on vinyl. Under The Western Freeway has never been released on vinyl in the U S. and The Sophtware Slump and Sumday are both long out-of-print collectors gems.

Picking up where 2000's celebrated The Sophtware Slump left off, Sumday continues to mine a particular vein of spacey, '60s-influenced indie rock. The debatable alt-country flavor that some heard on Slump is essentially absent here, with the balance tipped more in favor of that classic straight-eighths indie guitar style married to some gorgeous atmospheric production touches and some first-class melodic songwriting.
