    Black Tar Prophecies Vols. 4, 5 & 6

Deluxe Gatefold Double LP Features Four Mind-Blowing Laser Etchings

    Includes 3 Previously Unreleased Tracks

Following the release of their most acclaimed album of their decade-long career, Deep Politics (2011), Grails revisited Black Tar Prophecies, their ever-expanding, enigmatic tapestry of eclectic experiments released in scarce limited editions that often disappear before most fans discover their existence.

Black Tar Prophecies Vol's 4, 5 & 6 collects the last three volumes in the Black Tar series, originally released as a limited-edition 12, and a split LP with Finish psych-rock phenoms, Pharaoh Overlord. Exclusive to this collection is Volume 6, three previously unreleased tracks that run the gamut from found-sound collage to moody, piano-driven soundtracks to obscure erotic horror films that never existed (but should have).

Deluxe Gatefold 2xLP features four mind-blowing laser etchings - one on each side of the record, beginning where the grooves of the music end. It's pretty, and pretty unbelievable.

    Burning Off Impurities

Portland's Grails return with their first studio album since 2004's Redlight. An increased interest in psychedelic, ambient, and world music is most likely to blame for the group's exploration of the lesser-traveled paths of modern music. In addition, their eclectic range of collaborative endeavors - guitarist Zak Riles is also in M. Ward's band, while drummer Emil Amos has moonlighted as Jandek's drummer - has introduced an element of improvisation and reinterpretation of ideas that's both brilliant and earnest.

    Black Tar Prophecies Vols. 1, 2, & 3

Remastered for vinyl and reissued for the first time in over a decade, Black Tar Prophecies Vols. 1, 2, & 3 is a massive evolutionary step in the established Grails sound and is shrouded in change and pain. The somewhat clinical studio sound and recording style with which they had established a tremendous following has been replaced with a much more free and conceptual recording style. This method liberated the group in the studio and these recordings feel much more open, heavy, and psychedelic. This sound has always existed within Grails, but it was here that it became their identity.

When the Surfaris' monumental Wipe Out blitzed the charts in the summer of '63, the L.A. combo was rushed back into the studio to cut a full album of foam-flecked classics. Inexplicably that LP was never released, but 40 years later, here are two previously unheard monsters from that Holy Grail of surf sessions: early workouts on Jack The Ripper and I'm A Hog For You--both undeniable evidence that great things are worth waiting for! Chalice Hymnal

When Grails dropped their fifth studio album, Deep Politics
in 2011, it was instantly hailed as a cult classic and became
the moment when Grails truly cultivated a sound all their
own. Six years later, they advance that sound with their most
lush, expansive album of their inspired career, Chalice
    Hymnal.

Rather than pick up where they left off, Grails take the
sky-high riff-based heaviness of their earlier albums and
distill it into a nuanced, widescreen opus. The perennial
influences of mid-20th century Western film scores, obscure
library music, and psychedelic krautrock are indelibly
imprinted, but Chalice Hymnal exudes an eerie patience in
unfurling the many layers of its subtle details.

Produced by the band over the past five years, Chalice
Hymnal bears some of the European psych and
experimental hip-hop production techniques of founding
members Alex Hall and Emil Amos' other group, Lilacs &
Champagne. Amos' meditative metal band, Om, and
longtime singer-songwriter project, Holy Sons, also naturally
find their way into the Chalice cauldron. Rounding out their
leaner line-up, cofounder Zak Riles (also of experimental
kraut-psych trio, Watter) layers synths and programming into
an electronic-prog hybrid that pushes Grails further into the
deep end, displaying a profound resonance, both musically
and emotionally. No one else sounds like Grails, and on
Chalice Hymnal they sound more like themselves than ever
    before.

    Take Refuge In Clean Living

Remastered For Vinyl From Original Recordings

Opening with a nod to Syd Barret's Pink Floyd (Piper at the Gates of Dawn) Take Refuge In Clean Living begins with morse code and drops into one of the heaviest slow-burn grooves in the Grails canon. Sounding something like Hawkwind and Ravi Shankar scoring Blade Runner, it's lysergic and earthy for Grails in a new way. The rest of the record moves from blissful Eno-inspired ambience, to epic Morricone rock hymns, to an unexpected take on a Ventures tune that returns the listener to the very beginnings of instrumental rock music. The touring incarnation of Grails in 2006 and 2007 included good friend and drummer Ben Nugent, allowing Emil Amos to switch to 3rd guitar for the band's live instrumentation. The DNA of this guitar-heavy line-up allowed for new kinds of arrangements and bigger melodies. In early 2007, the then-5-piece entered Steven Lobdell's (Faust) Audible Alchemy studio to document the new songs written with this augmented ensemble. Those sessions make up Take Refuge In Clean Living.

Remastered for vinyl and reissued for the first time in nearly a decade, Take Refuge In Clean Living sees Grails pulling back their already wide lens on multiple sonic horizons. Grails often take what would sound over-ambitious on paper and make it sonically flow in an effortless, laid-back style. The band is defined by exploration and they've created a template for themselves where any style or method can be ingested to reap legitimate rewards. Take Refuge In Clean Living rightly suggested that Grails wouldn't run out of ideas.

    This World

Watter is a new trio made up of close friends and
collaborators whose collective pedigree reads like a desert
island list of must-haves in experimental rock musicians.
Multi-instrumentalists Zak Riles (Grails) and Tyler Trotter
are anchored by legendary drummer Britt Walford (Slint,
Evergreen) on six genre-defying pieces of monolithic
mood music. For Riles and Trotter, it's a chance to dig
deeper into the sandbox in which Grails have sculpted
many mercurial masterpieces in recent years; for Walford,
it's the opportunity to play a substantial role in a new active
band for the first time in nearly twenty years.

Written, recorded, and produced entirely in the group's
collective studios in Louisville, KY, This World is a stunning
combination of heady psychedelic rock, vintage cinematic
New Age explorations, and sinister Krautrock, performed
with seemingly endless stamina. Born out of many
late-night jam sessions, many songs also feature fellow
Louisville icons - Rachel Grimes (Rachel's) provides
several of the album's most sublime moments, and The
For Carnation's Todd Cook lays the heavy, bass-driven
foundation for the penultimate epic, Seawater.

This World is the kind of album that inspires renewed
wonder in the mysterious powers of Louisville's water
supply. It draws impossibly broad inspiration from decades
of Eastern and Western folk, rock, ambient, film score,
library music, and neoclassical, and masterfully emerges
with an ever-enveloping suite perfectly befitting its
    constantly curious composers.

Already Platinum. Impeccable design. Although this is one of the more talked about records of his career, there's no doubt that this is a testament to JAY Z's diligence, entrepreneurship, and artistic vision. Picking up where Watch The Throne left off, Magna Carta Holy Grail is JAY Z's twelfth studio album, and a portrait of an emcee embracing fatherhood, marriage, and striking a balance between a past spent coming up and a future shuffling around the top. The LP also includes a limited edition flexi-disc postcard of exclusive non-album track ''Open Letter'' hidden under the artwork on the back cover. Production is helmed largely by J-Roc, Timbaland, Pharrell Williams, Hit-Boy and others, while featuring performances by BeyoncÉ, Rick Ross, Justin Timberlake, Frank Ocean, Nas, and more. With MCHG, JAY Z understands that hip hop is starting to enjoy the same clout as fine art and, even better, hip hop is alive, a part of the world, evolving, and not cordoned off in a museum. Blue And Moody

    Pressed at R.T.I.

An arresting, singular chanteuse, Lula Reed beat out 50 other contestants in an audition for Sonny Thompson's band at the Toledo Auditorium. Following her victory, 22-year old Reed trekked down to Cincinnati with future husband Thompson to record for Sid Nathan's King Records. These sessions yielded two Billboard Top Ten R&B singles, "Let's Call It a Day" (#7) and "I'll Drown in My Tears" (#5). These songs plus ten more smokin' sides are collected on Blue and Moody (1958), Reed's one and only solo album. Long out of print, this LP has become a holy grail for blues and R&B enthusiasts, who routinely pay princely sums for the few copies in circulation. Once again, it's Sundazed to the rescue! Painstakingly mastered from the original analog session tapes and pressed at R.T.I., Sundazed presents this extremely rare LP on pristine 180-gram vinyl.

The work of the Left Banke has long been an elusive holy grail for vintage pop fanatics. The legendary baroque rock combos work ranks with the greatest American music of the 1960s, and remains beloved by discerning pop connoisseurs around the world. Out of print for decades and despite its longstanding unavailability, the Left Bankes music has attained an ever-increasing level of prestige over the years, and continues to exercise a powerful mystique amongst the groups legion of admirers.

The Left Bankes 1967 debut album Walk Away RenÉe/Pretty Ballerina is widely regarded as one of the greatest debut albums of the 60s, thanks to frontman Steve Martins evocative lead vocals, the haunting harmonies of band members Tom Finn and George Cameron, the ambitious songwriting of keyboardist Michael Brown, and exquisite, classically-influenced arrangements that were unlike anything else in popular music at the time. Walk Away RenÉe, released the previous year as the bands first single, remains one of the eras most recognizable (and most-covered) standards. In addition to Walk Away RenÉe and its followup hit Pretty Ballerina, the album also features such memorable numbers as She May Call You Up Tonight, Barterers and Their Wives and Shadows Breaking Over My Head.

Queen Of The Flat Top Guitar

This is a collection of impossibly rare recordings from legendary finger-picker Lena Hughes. A musical amateur that best exemplified true artistry, Lena Hughes was born in Grape Grove Township, Missouri, in 1904. Though she never recorded any 78s and only one LP, Hughes was most influential through her steady performances at various fiddler conventions and folk festivals throughout the Ozarks. She was an excellent fiddler, banjoist and guitar picker who retained the largely extinct repertoire of parlor pieces and the variety of specialized tunings that were necessary to play them.

Lena Hughes' repertoire can be devided roughly in half: finger-picked numbers adapted from fiddle tunes and recast parlor guitar pieces gleaned from popular sentimental songs, hymns and 19th century airs. As a faithful attendee at folk festivals, Hughes was accompanied by her guitar-playing husband, Jake. Her most mesmerizing performances, such as Pearly Dew, Spanish Fandango and Kentucky Moon Waltz depend heavily upon resonance of the open chord as it relates to the picking of the melodic line, primarily on one string. This ethereal harmonic technique, which seems so natural in Hughes' playing, is the holy grail for most finger-picking guitarists. Her lack of pretense and her mastery of this repertoire are what define her legendary status.

    Nedi Myra

'Nedi Myra' was one of the first house albums I bought, or at least that's what I THOUGHT it was. Weird futuro-bossa and foggy disco-not-really-disco was more like it. And for years I actually thought that was Bjorn on the cover, and that he lived out in the woods with his guitar... tsk tsk. - Todd Terje

Smalltown Supersound is proud to announce that it is re-issuing the Holy Grail of Norwegian dance music, the first two albums by reclusive cult innovator from beyond the Arctic Circle Bjorn Torske (1997's Nedi Myra and 2001's Trobbel). Together with the late Tore Erot Kroknes, Bjorn laid the foundation for the disco scene in Norway that gave birth to Prins Thomas, Lindstrom, Andre Bratten and Todd Terje. Inspired by DJ Harvey, Ron Hardy and Idjut Boys, Bjorn Torske and Erot brough underground disco and house/techno (Chicago/Detroit style) to the country, developing their very own style of tripped out dubby disco with their characteristic weird, humorous and psychedelic twists along the way. With Torske as with many auteurs, he hasn't always got the attention and credit he deserved. He is known for being reclusive, and an outsider, making music on his own terms and not playing by the rules of the record business. All of which has made him the musician's musician. Get to know the production genius of Norwegian disco's original Wilderness man!

    Bopping The Blues

One of Miles Davis' Earliest Recording Sessions

Pressed On Audiophile-Grade 180 Gram Vinyl At Pallas Group In Germany

Mastered From Original Analog Tapes By Bernie Grundman

Features Legendary Tenor Saxophonist Gene Ammons and Drummer Art Blakey

One of Miles Davis' earliest recording sessions. The very first known instance of the famed trumpeter playing in an "open" style, and in a band with legendary tenor saxophonist Gene Ammons and drummer Art Blakey. Need any more be said? Very few jazz albums possess more historical import and wow-inspiring significance than Bopping the Blues, which documents a 1946 session in which Davis supported a group and two singers, Earl Coleman and Ann Baker, in a splendid bop affair. Yes, it's got that elusive Holy Grail quality. Originally released by the UK label Black Lion, an imprint that specialized in resurrecting rare gems from US jazz and blues legends, Bopping the Blues marks what are indisputably Davis' initial open-voiced contributions and a can't-miss opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts to get closer to the man and his music.

    Early Years

Sierra Records presents their most ambitious project ever, literally in the works for decades, with the Gram Parsons The Early Years Box Set. This exclusive, collectors edition is packaged in a 12 x 12 high gloss full color, rigid deluxe, presentation box, containing 4 distinct discs: CD1: Gram Parsons The Early Years Vol. 1 & 2; CD2: Big Mouth Blues - A Conversation with Gram Parsons; DVD: rare and only performance of Gram Parsons and the Fallen Angels; and Gram Parsons The Early Years Volume 1 picture disc vinyl. The set also includes a new 24 page color booklet/pictorial and posters!

CD1 is the first ever release on compact disc of the now classic and ground breaking, Gram Parsons The Early Years Volume 1 (1963-65) folk recordings of Gram Parsons and the Shilos with all original tracks from the 1979 LP. Added to these original ten tracks, will be the never released in any format, Volume 2 of lost early recordings focusing on Gram's solo efforts recorded by Dick Weissman including several never before heard Parsons' compositions! Continuing on this expanded compact disc are recordings by Gram Parsons & The Like, his experimental band from his brief stay in late 1965 at Harvard University. This includes a rare performance with the late actor, turned singer, Brandon deWilde. Closing out this disc is the holy grail of lost Gram Parsons recordings; Brandon deWilde singing lead, with Gram on Do Right Woman and Hickory Wind.

CD2 features Big Mouth Blues: A Conversation with Gram Parsons, a full color digipak packaged release of a 76 minute interview with Gram Parsons conducted in 1972. He speaks about his musical influences, his formation of the eclectic, International Submarine Band, his part in creating and encouraging the Byrds' Sweetheart of the Rodeo album, his hopes for and disappointments with, the iconoclast Flying Burrito Brothers, his plans for a solo career and his enduring musical vision. Hearing his story in his own words and voice will give you a better glimpse of Gram Parsons, the man.

The accompanying DVD features the official release of the original video tape of the rare and only performance of Gram Parsons and the Fallen Angels. Though the video quality was not very good to begin with, the aging video tape has been enhanced utilizing today's newest digital video technology. Additional never seen before, non-performance footage from the show has been added which includes longer introductions by Gram on stage. As an added bonus, a very rare video performance closes the DVD with Gram performing a lip sync version of Hot Burrito #1.

The long lost, recently discovered 1979 picture disc vinyl LP features Gram Parsons The Early Years, Volume 1 with a color picture of Gram on Side 1 and on Side 2 the original full color Sierra-Briar Records orange crate' logo. Originally conceived in April of 1979, only one test pressing of the disc existed until now! The disc is playable on any phonograph turntable, recorded and pressed in magnificent Mono. But there is more! This collector's vinyl disc is even more unique as the disc was pressed on 180g pure virgin vinyl, highly sought after today by audiophiles everywhere! It is packaged in it's own clear plastic sleeve.

Booklet: A new 24 page booklet/pictorial with additional accompanying notes and featuring photographs by noted Life Magazine photographer Ted Polumbaum. Entitled Gram Parsons at Harvard - Fall 1965 with commentary by Harvard grad (Class of 1968) and fellow Gram classmate, David Johnson, these never before seen, let alone published, photographs capture Gram's brief stay as an incoming freshman at Harvard University in the Fall of 1965. See Gram at his desk studying, going to class, hanging out with teachers and students, playing his guitar, composing new songs plus photos of Gram Parsons and the Like (John Nuese, Ian Dunlap, Mickey Gauvin, Tom Scott). Commissioned by Life/Look Magazine for a proposed pictorial on the incoming college freshmen of 1965, these photos are incredible and Gram never looked better. These were photographs were shot just days before he would leave Harvard to head for New York moving in with new found music contemporary, Brandon deWilde, famed actor and now budding country singer!

Posters: Folded posters of Gram Parsons at the Chateau Marmont 1969 (24 x 36 poster) and two versions of the Pete Frame's Gram Parsons Rock Family Tree The Grievous Angel and Gram & Emmylou (both posters are 18x 24).

Mention the name Bad Brains to any music fan today and you will get a jaw-dropping response! Considered by some to be the holy grail' of punk rock, Bad Brains are one of the definitive American punk groups who garner the same respect as the Sex Pistols, Black Flag, The Ramones and the The Clash. The Bad Brains iconic legacy brought a new dimension to music by melding punk and reggae into a innovative style that has yet-to-be copied. And with this new studio album, Bad Brains essentially returns to their core wit a raw analog-driven chaos produced by MCA (aka Adam Yauch) of the Beastie Boys.Build a Nation has clearly brought out the best in the band.

All original members, Dr. Know, Darryl Jennifer H.R. and Earl Hudson, deliver an explosive arsenal of riffage and bad ass bag of voices. Producer MCA recorded the album at the Beastie Boys' Oscilloscope studio in NYC. It is the first studio album released by the Oscilloscope laboratories, outside of Beastie Boys' albums. Sometimes reactionary, sometimes volatile, Bad Brains simply define the American punk experience.

    Fall Of Man

    Gold Colored Vinyl

Emil Amos, the mastermind behind Holy Sons, returns with his second Thrill Jockey release, Fall of Man. The multi-instrumentalist (who counts himself as a member of Om, Grails, and Lilacs & Champagne) carves out new territory on his most diverse release to date, adding more hooks and pop balladry to his songs while still retaining the intimacy and psychological depth of his earlier records. 1970s classic rock has always been a touchstone for Amos, and on Fall of Man he filters those influences through his modern looking-glass to create a deliberate, melancholy album of epic scope, a sonic universe tinged with a soft, slight sadness.
