    Graceland: 25th Anniversary

Ranked 81/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

The universal appeal of the music of Graceland proved more powerful and enduring than the political hotbed attending its creation. In 1986, the album sold 14 million copies worldwide, and received universal praise from critics around the globe. Paul Simon and the members of Ladysmith Black Mambazo performed on Saturday Night Live and appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone.

By January of 1987, You Can Call Me Al was everywhere and Graceland won 'Album of the Year' at the Grammy Awards in 1987. Then, in an unprecedented carryover, the album garnered the Grammy for 'Song of the Year' with its title track in 1988. The album generated three hit singles and kept Simon and the Graceland tour on the road for five years. Graceland and songs like The Boy in the Bubble, Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes, You Can Call Me Al and the title track are beacons of cultural unity and remain a pivotal listening experience over 25 years later!

Paul Simons Graceland played a greatly significant role in removing the standoffish dread Western culture harbored toward South Africa during its internal struggle against apartheid, humanizing both a countrys soul-searching hunger for liberation and its simultaneous outpouring of cathartic creative expression. Timothy White/Billboard

In many ways, Graceland was the most extraordinary experience in my entire career, notes Simon. The insight into rhythm was the great gift that I received from making the trip to South Africa, and collaborating with African musicians.

    Graceland

Graceland (1986) is the seventh studio album by American singer-songwriter Paul Simon. In 1984, after a period of depression, Simon became fascinated with a bootleg cassette of South African township music. He planned a trip to Johannesburg in the new year with Roy Halee, where he spent two weeks recording with South African musicians.

The album features an eclectic mixture of musical styles, including Pop, Rock, A Cappella, Zydeco, Isicathamiya, and Mbaqanga. Simon created new compositions inspired by the recordings made in Johannesburg, collaborating with both African and American artists.

Graceland was a major commercial hit, becoming Simon's most successful studio album. His highest-charting effort in over a decade, Simon's return to the forefront of popular music was considered a remarkable comeback in a fickle music industry. It attracted rave reviews from music critics, won 1987 Grammy Award for Album of the Year, and sold over 16 million copies worldwide.

There Goes Rhymin' Simon (On Sale)

Retaining the buoyant musical feel of Paul Simon, but employing a more produced sound, There Goes Rhymin' Simon found Paul Simon writing and performing with assurance and venturing into soulful and R&B-oriented music. Simon returned to the kind of vocal pyrotechnics heard on the Simon & Garfunkel records by using gospel singers. On Love Me Like a Rock and Tenderness (which sounded as though it could have been written to Art Garfunkel), the Dixie Hummingbirds sang prominent backup vocals, and on Take Me to the Mardi Gras, Reverend Claude Jeter contributed a falsetto part that Garfunkel could have handled, though not as warmly. For several tracks, Simon traveled to the Muscle Shoals Sound Studios to play with its house band, getting a variety of styles, from the gospel of Love Me Like a Rock to the Dixieland of Mardi Gras. Simon was so confident that he even included a major ballad statement of the kind he used to give Garfunkel to sing: American Tune was his musical State of the Union, circa 1973, but this time Simon was up to making his big statements in his own voice. Though that song spoke of the age's most uncertain hour, otherwise Rhymin' Simon was a collection of largely positive, optimistic songs of faith, romance, and commitment, concluding, appropriately, with a lullaby (St. Judy's Comet) and a declaration of maternal love (Loves Me Like a Rock) -- in other words, another mother-and-child reunion that made Paul Simon and There Goes Rhymin' Simon bookend masterpieces Simon would not improve upon (despite some valiant attempts) until Graceland in 1986.

    So Much More

Dennen's soulful album is a folk rock revelation...if you're one of those Paul Simon fans who wish he'd return to 'Graceland' already, we've found just the tune for you. But it isn't exactly a 'Graceland' tribute; there are also shades of Joni Mitchell and James Taylor. And the meditative 'I Asked When' is a positively Dylanesque protest song - Washington Post. The dude has a gift for hooks. But unlike Gavin DeGraw or Jason Mraz, Dennen has something to say, putting him closer to skilled songsmiths like Jeff Tweedy and Ray LaMontagne, who also combine seductive voices with relatable premises. Dennen's finely nuanced record gets more captivating with each listen - Paste.

    Stranger To Stranger

Paul Simon will release Stranger to Stranger, his 13th solo album in 2016 via Concord Records. Full of thrilling, imaginative textures, Stranger to Stranger conjures a vivid and vital new context to Simon's well-established virtuosity as a singer and songwriter. The record-his first since 2011's acclaimed So Beautiful or So What-ushers the listener into a brave new musical world where expectations are defied and exceeded, as they were thirty years ago with another masterwork, Graceland.

Produced by Simon and his longtime musical partner Roy Halee, Stranger to Stranger's adventurous sonic spirit is abundantly clear right from the darkly humorous first two songs, "The Werewolf" and "Wristband."

"It's about getting you to actually hear something in a new way. It's about making music that sounds old and new at the same time; music with a sense of mystery," Simon explains of his and Halee's experimentation on the album.

The first song written for the album, "Insomniac's Lullaby," led Simon to the musical possibilities first suggested by Harry Partch-the 20th century American composer and theorist who created custom-made instruments in microtonal tunings. To capture the sounds of Partch's unusual instruments such as Cloud-Chamber Bowls and the Chromelodeon, Simon took his equipment to the laboratory at Montclair State University in New Jersey, where the original Harry Partch instrument collection was being curated.

An experimental session with the percussionist in Simon's band and a group of Flamenco musicians provided the initial rhythmic premise for Stranger to Stranger and supplied the grooves that were the basis for four songs on the album-"The Riverbank," "The Werewolf," "Wristband" and "Stranger to Stranger."

Stranger to Stranger's collage of sound also includes the Italian electronic dance music artist Clap! Clap!, whose album Tayi Bebba, blending African field recordings and EDM, Simon admired. Clap! Clap!'s sound can be heard on three tracks: "The Werewolf," "Wristband" and "Street Angel."

"Sound is the theme of this album as much as it's about the subjects of the individual songs. If people get that, I'll be pleased," explains Simon. "The right song at the right time can live for generations. A beautiful sound, well that's forever."

In many ways, Graceland was the most extraordinary experience in my entire career, notes Simon. The insight into rhythm was the great gift that I received from making the trip to South Africa, and collaborating with African musicians.

    Storm & Grace

With all the hoopla that has surrounded her, it's easy to forget that Lisa Marie Presley is at heart a simple Southern girl whose earliest musical memories are of obsessively listening to 45's in her bedroom at Graceland and of her dad catching her singing into a hairbrush in front of a mirror at the age of three.

The Memphis-born Presley reclaims those roots on her new album Storm and Grace - an Americana-inspired showcase for her songwriting talent and smoldering alto voice. Produced with elegant restraint by 12-time Grammy Award-winner T Bone Burnett, Storm and Grace is a marked departure from Presley's previous albums, 2003's gold-certified To Whom It May Concern and 2005's Now What, which both debuted in the Top 10 on Billboard's Top 200 chart, "I love the songs, but I think I was hiding behind a lot of sonic layers because it was scary to go out there," Presley says. "It's easier to bury yourself in the noise so you don't stand out. This album is a lot more stripped-down and naked, both musically and lyrically."

Way Down In The Jungle Room

RCA Records and Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, will release Way Down In The Jungle Room, a definitive new 2-LP collection of Elvis Presley's last studio recordings.

Way Down In The Jungle Room is an essential and welcome addition for every fan's library. In the mid-1970s, Elvis, the King of Rock 'n' Roll, became another kind of pioneer as one of the world's first major recording artists to create fully-realized professional level records in the intimacy of his own home studio.

With original recordings executive-produced by Elvis Presley with producer Felton Jarvis (who'd helmed most of Elvis' records from 1966-1977), Way Down In The Jungle Room features rare outtakes laid down during two mythic sessions (February 2-8, 1976 and October 28-30, 1976) in Graceland's den -- known as the Jungle Room -- which was converted into a professional caliber recording studio for the purpose of capturing these indelible performances. The outtakes have been newly mixed by Grammy Award-winning engineer Matt Ross-Spang at Sam Phillips Recording in Memphis, Tennessee.

For these sessions, Elvis was backed by many members of his longtime touring band including: James Burton (guitar), Ronnie Tutt (drums), David Briggs (keyboards), Glenn D. Hardin (keyboards), Jerry Scheff (bass), Norbert Putnam (bass) and J.D. Sumner & the Stamps (vocals).

In 1976, when the tracks for Way Down In The Jungle Room were cut, Elvis Presley had been an RCA Records recording artist for 20 years, inventing the sound and attitude that defined the very essence of rock 'n' roll. That same year, RCA released The Sun Sessions, the label's first official collection of the electrifying 1954-1955 Elvis recordings that launched his career while transforming the world.

Having entered his 40s, Elvis Presley was evolving as an artist and, rather than bask in the nostalgia of his 1950s watershed recordings, was looking for new ways to express himself musically. Needing to create new sounds for a new era, Elvis Presley--who'd been charting on Country and Adult Contemporary stations -- decided to convert the Hawaiian-themed Jungle Room (a relaxation den in his fabled Graceland mansion in Memphis, Tennessee) into an informal home studio, where he could lay down tracks the way he wanted, outside the budget and scheduling pressures of the professional studios he'd worked in previously. With the help of RCA's mobile recording truck and longtime producer Felton Jarvis and engineer Mike Moran at the board, Elvis tackled a far-ranging mix of country and pop covers (Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain, I'll Never Fall in Love Again, Danny Boy, Solitaire) and late-period classics of his catalog, such as Moody Blue and Way Down.

The Outtakes was mixed for this collection at the Sam Phillips Recording Service in Memphis and includes both outtakes and in-the-studio dialog, providing a fly-on-the-wall experience of what the sessions were like. With the exception of She Thinks I Still Care, the performances have been sequenced in the order they were recorded.

    Sun Down

Nik Freitas' Team Love debut, Sun Down, equal parts wry, warm and sonorous, is the end product of several years of lifeÆs ups and downs. Freitas writes, plays, engineers and produces every note on his records. Not that he's got a lot of expensive gear. A visit to his Poppy Peak studio/shed reveals that Nik is working low-budget minor miracles, the kind of miracles one receives via hundreds of hours on Craigslist. One listen to Sun Down and you know you're hearing a certain hard-won grace. The record takes you from Paul Simon's Graceland to David Bowie's Hunky Dory all in the span of forty effortless minutes. Sun Down is endowed with a sort of gravity and self-possession; no reaching, no going for the gold, just perfect, four minute thesis statements. It all began several years ago for Freitas, when a co-worker sold him an antique piano that was used by a street musician before the dawn of Casio. Nik taught himself how to play the thing, and it became the cornerstone of three earlier records, Here's Laughing at You, Heavy Mellow and Voicing the Hammers. Other people began to take notice. He's opened for Jason Lytle of Granddaddy, played guitar for Jim Fairchild of All Smiles and recorded with Miles Kurosky of Beulah. Lately, he's been opening shows for Bright Eyes which led him to his current resting place at Team Love. The end of the imaginary side one features Sophie with live horns punctuating the tale of a girl who seems to have made some rather unfortunate choices. It's a perfect signpost of a song, and it clears the decks for what's to come in the second half, where Nik's orchestra of one builds the final five songs into an Abbey Road type suite that fans of Jon Brion will hearken to. Sun Down is imbued with a sort of indie grandeur that is both unexpected and totally natural.

Simon Price is a master of creating music that is at once infinite and immediate. As a member of British heavyweights The Heads, he has journeyed with the band through two decades of brain-bending heavy psych, releasing 20 full-lengths in various editions, recording several Peel Sessions, and cultivating a following that surpasses most definitions of "cult." As kandodo, Price offers a more introspective take on the empyrean. On k2o, kandodo's second full-length, Price presents listeners with languid expanses of guitar and keyboard that are deceptively detailed and immaculately constructed.

k2o is liquid psych: fully immersive and steadily drifting towards the horizon. "slowah" eases us into Price's world as layered guitars and keyboards slowly build and fellow Head Wayne Maskell joins in on percussion. Field recordings pepper the album, from the tranquil sounds of the Italian shoreline on "waves" to the Graceland tour guide on Price's tribute to the King, "grace and."

The massive "swim into the sun," clocks in at 22 minutes and occupies the album's entire b-side. Like a heavy "Hallogallo," a steady motorik beat and single chord forms a rhythmic infrastructure for Price's unrestrained soloing and tidal washes of guitar. Extra drums kick in after 15 minutes, courtesy of Wayne again, riding the wave home. The basic track was recorded to cassette on Price's walkman, and slowly added to and built up over the course of two years. It is one of Price's most ambitious and triumphant creations yet.

k2o was recorded in Bristol, London, Memphis, and on the Italian shoreline over the course of three years using his dependable Fender Mustang, microkorg, and as much fuzz as he could gather. Price has ventured deeper down the rabbit hole of his own rich imagination, and we are all the better for it.

Mastered Impeccably by Joe Reagoso and Kevin Gray from the Original RCA Records tapes

    Manufactured at R.T.I

Elvis Aaron Presley was born during the Great Depression into a poor family in Mississippi. They moved to Memphis during the early
fifties, and as a struggling young truck driver, he cut some demos at Sun Studios as a gift for his beloved mother Gladys. These initial songs,
of which he had only paid a few dollars to record, would become the catalyst that would kick-start the beginnings of a soon to be worldwide
superstar unlike the world has ever known.
The folks at RCA Victor knew that this young fellow named Elvis was destined for superstardom. They quickly bought out his contract
and signed the legend to a long-term deal, and his first RCA single Heartbreak Hotel forever etched "The King of Rock and Roll" trademark
    to his name.

Over the next three decades, Elvis Presley would release dozens of hit albums and tons of smash singles, spend time in the Army, star
in over 35 top charting films, as well as sell out concert tours around the states and Canada making him the most successful solo artist of all
time. In 1977, his career ignited even further thanks to his highly successful tour and his much anticipated newly released LP Moody Blue.
Already gaining popularity in advance thanks to two chart single smashes Moody Blue and Way Down, this masterwork album
included a treasure trove of studio and concert performances that captured a very great time in the musical history of this iconic legend.
In addition to the wonderful hit singles aforementioned, The King reaches back to his early Memphis days with a tribute to Johnny Ace
with Pledging My Love and more fifties classics like The Diamonds' Little Darlin' and Jim Reeves' country smash He'll Have To Go.
Even more hits abound with sensational interpretations of Al Hibbler's classic Unchained Melody which also hit the top ten of the
country music charts, a gospel rockin' version of Let Me Be There and a brilliant reading of the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice's classic It's
    Easy For You.

Sadly, this was Elvis Presley's final album as he passed away suddenly on August 16, 1977. The world was never the same after the
tragic news was told that day, as hoards of fans journeyed to his beloved Graceland to pay their heartfelt tribute to The King of Rock and Roll.
Elvis Presley's Moody Blue album, of course already a huge seller prior to his death, would go on to become one of his biggest albums
ever, as fans rushed to the stores to buy his final masterwork. Initially pressed on BLUE vinyl, this amazing album has been out of print on
vinyl for several decades that is until now!

    Workbench Songs

Available On Vinyl For The First Time

Offered here for the first time ever on vinyl, Workbench Songs was originally released on CD in 2006. It represented Guy Clark's 10th studio release and continued his legacy as one of the most critically acclaimed Texas songsmith's of our time. The Austin American Statesman had this to say of the 2006 release:

Guy Clark dominates the discussion with his opinion on Townes Van Zandt whenever it comes to talking about who is the one plus ultra Texas songwriter. He has a point, of course, but if Townes is No. 1, Clark is No. 1A. Workbench Songs goes a mighty long way to proving that true. It's not just another collection of his finely crafted songs, his first for a new label. It's one of the best albums of his career. What's continually amazing about Clark is his ability to capture a sweeping range of emotions and everyday occurrences in song, from joy and pain to roadhouse rambunctious and Mexicans visiting Graceland, with exquisite simplicity and captivating lucidity. Here his co-writers are the best of their ilk, Rodney Crowell, Gary Nicholson, Darrell Scott, Lee Roy Parnell, and longtime collaborator Verlon Thompson, but there's also a chilling version of Van Zandt's "No Lonesome Tune," perhaps to demonstrate his point. Songs like Celtic flavored set opener, "Walkin' Man," the comically breezy "Tornado Time in Texas," and the universally recognizable scene set in "Out in the Parkin' Lot" stand out on a collection that may be from the workbench but is nowhere near workmanlike.
