    American V: A Hundred Highways

The ethical questions surrounding this final album in the American Recordings series are as unavoidable as they are, ultimately, peripheral. While the
vocal tracks were recorded in the months just prior to Johnny Cash's passing in September 2003, the arrangements weren't undertaken until two years
later. And though producer Rick Rubin had become a trusted friend, the Man in Black wasn't around to approve or disapprove, let alone guide, the final
sessions. However, if the pure power of these recordings doesn't quiet the skeptics, nothing will. With Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench
and slide guitar session pro Smokey Hormel on board (all three of whom appear on earlier Cash albums), along with guitarists Matt Sweeney and Johnny
Polansky, the sound is stately and acoustic, but rarely staid, even as the dynamics of earlier recordings in the series are absent. Instead, the songs have
a measured, elegiac intensity, the sound of musicians choosing their notes carefully and making just the right choices.

The songs Cash sings are, unsurprisingly, confessional and reflective: his mortality and his mistakes, his maker and his salvation, and the loss of his wife
June and the end of his career may have weighed on his mind, but in these songs he both embodies and transcends his personal history. On God's
Gonna Cut You Down, as the musicians clap and stomp behind him, his voice cuts through the air like that same avenging hand. On the new original
Like the 309--the last song Cash ever wrote--he cops to being short of breath, and that voice becomes a metaphor for what each of us will one day face.
On Gordon Lightfoot's If You Read My Mind, Rubin flirts with overwhelming the damp bittersweetness of Cash's phrasing in tasteful atmospherics, but
the voice is implacable, hitting and finding notes one never expected he'd have the will to find. Likewise, it's hard to believe this is his first recording of Ian
Tyson's Four Strong Winds; the elemental narrative seems to have been written for him. Two songs, however, Cash has recorded before: the bornagain
hymn I Came to Believe and the final spiritual, I'm Free from the Chain Gang Now. The latter especially is a definitive testament, as is his version
of Bruce Springsteen's Further On (Up the Road). One sunny morning we'll rise, I know / And I'll meet you further on up the road, he sings. If only,
    John, if only. --Roy Kasten

If You Could Read My Mind

    Limited Edition 180 Gram Vinyl

Canadian singer/songwriter Gordon Lightfoot emerged from the 1960s folk world, and had as much in common with Ian & Sylvia, Eric Andersen, and Bob Dylan as he did with any '70s AM wonder. Though the title track of IF YOU COULD READ MY MIND was indeed his first massive pop hit, the album proves that Lightfoot was a serious, substantive song craftsman. Minstrel of the Dawn is a Mr. Tambourine Man-like affair that closes on a surprisingly sarcastic note. Sit Down Young Stranger and Cobwebs & Dust are the folkiest cuts, and each bears an incisive, poetic lyricism. The bluesy Baby It's Alright and a cover of Kris Kristofferson's Me and Bobby McGee showcase Lightfoot's rootsier tendencies, while Saturday Clothes stands out by virtue of it's Bacharach-like melody and dinner-jacket chord progression. While he wasn't as edgy as fellow Canuck Leonard Cohen, Lightfoot was clearly a formidable song-poet.

    Self Portrait

One of the most controversial albums in Bob Dylan's remarkable catalog, the 1970 double-LP Self Portrait continues to exercise considerable fascination amongst Dylan devotees. Released on the heels of the artist's game changing Nashville Skyline, Self Portrait offered a quirky assortment of studio and live tracks, encompassing Dylan originals as well as covers of familiar pop and folk numbers, recorded with an all-star musical cast.

At the time of its original release, the sprawling, unconventional Self Portrait generated an immense amount of discussion and disagreement amonst Dylan admirers. The ongoing controversy surrounding the album has been fueled over the years by Dylan himself. At various times, Dylan has defended Self Portrait as a heartfelt artistic statement, dismissed it as a joke and described it as a concerted effort to escape the pressures of his unwanted status as the voice of a generation. Whatever the artist's actual intentions, Self Portrait retains a unique niche in the hearts of Dylan fans, and is often cited as an early landmark in the birth of alternative country.

Self Portrait's highlights include the Dylan originals Wigwam, later featured in the Wes Anderson film The Royal Tenenbaums; Living the Blues, subsequently covered by artists ranging from Leon Redbone to Antony Hegarty; and The Mighty Quinn, which Manfred Mann had turned into a British Invasion hit in 1968. The latter song is one of a quartet of live tracks drawn from Dylan's legendary performances with The Band at the historic Isle of Wight festival, along with memorable versions of the Dylan standards Like a Rolling Stone, Minstrel Boy and She Belongs to Me. Also featured are Dylan's readings of a variety of outside material, ranging from his iconic interpretation of the rural folk song Copper Kettle to his distinctive takes on such familiar tunes as Paul Simon's The Boxer, Gordon Lightfoot's Early Mornin' Rain and the vintage Every Brothers hits Let It Be Me and Take a Message to Mary.

Sundazed has restored this one-of-a-kind release to its original double-LP format. Mastered from the original analog master tapes, the album is pressed on high-quality, high-definition vinyl, with meticulously reproduced original gatefold cover art.

    Mixed Bag

"Freedom." The very mention of the song conjures images of Richie Havens at Woodstock, fiercely strumming his guitar and lost in an improvisational moment of creation. An intensely engaging performer, Havens honed his craft in the clubs and cafes of Greenwich Village, just over the bridge from his native Brooklyn. Painter, poet and multi-instrumentalist, Havens immersed himself in the Village's beatnik culture just as the nascent folk scene began to develop. Connecting with uber-manager Albert Grossman, then guiding the careers of Bob Dylan and Peter, Paul and Mary, Havens rose to the top tier of the international folk movement.

Signed to Verve Forecast, Havens released his first album, Mixed Bag, in August of 1967. The intriguing LP gathered songs from Gordon Lightfoot, Bob Dylan, Lennon/McCartney as well as two self-penned compositions and one co-written with future acting star Lou Gossett, Jr. The album's instrumentation featured Havens on sitar and acoustic guitar played in his unique style, thumb chording songs in open D tuning. Soaring above it all was his commanding baritone, a voice that injected gravitas into every song, bringing the lyrics to vivid life. A stunning debut, it climbed both the pop and jazz Billboard charts.

Havens followed up a year later with Something Else Again:. The cover portrait found Havens clad in dashiki and wearing beads while playing a sitar, looking like a standard bearer for the counterculture. The songs' subject matter followed that direction as well, dealing primarily with social issues rather than relationships. It was another charting record for Havens, reaching #184 on Billboard's Pop Albums. More than mere albums, Mixed Bag and Something Else Again: were signposts for a rapidly changing culture, leading the way to a more enlightened existence.

Exclusive Only To This LP Release: First Time Sitting Photos Of The Dead By The Legendary Herb Greene

Impeccably Mastered By Joe Reagoso At Friday Music Studios And Capitol Records, Hollywood, CA With Ron Mcmaster

The legendary Bay area rock superstars the Grateful Dead scored for over four decades a plethora of wonderful recordings
throughout their incredible career. Spearheaded originally by the late great Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kruetzmann and the late
Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, these five gentlemen set the world on fire with their magnificent artistry and musicianship which is unparaleled to this day.

With their very first San Francisco gigs and studio recordings when they were locally known as The Warlocks, the historical importance of these debut sessions would soon become a blueprint for the music world as the Grateful Dead would become one of the band's
and biggest concert attractions of all time.

Over a decade ago, the Grateful Dead unearthed 17 super rare studio recordings from 1965 through 1967. Aside from an ultra rare
45 on Scorpio Records and a collaborative effort with Jon Hendricks on Verve Records, none of these recordings were ever released.
Ranging from the very first sessions at Autumn Records (Beau Brummels, Sly Stone) and then the Scorpio Records sides, these tracks
simply became manna for the fans and were truly a find for any collector of fine rock and roll and early psych and garage rock fare.

Gordon Lightfoot's Early Morning Rain kicks off the collection, and then the fireworks light up as future Dead classics like I Know
You Rider, Don't Ease Me In and Cold Rain and Snow truly become a very important and interesting listen to any fan of the Dead or
    classic rock in general.

Known for their jams in concert and in the studio setting, you will get to hear stellar takes on rare tracks like Tastebud, The Only
Time Is Now, and of course the super rare Jon Hendricks (Lambert, Hendricks & Ross) protest rocker Fire in the City.

These amazing Dead recordings have never been released on the vinyl format that is until now

Friday Music is very pleased to announce for the very first time on 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl - The Grateful Dead's Birth Of The
Dead Volume One-The Studio Sessions. This deluxe 2 LP set not only has the original 17 studio sessions unearthed by the Dead themselves, but it also includes for the very first time anywhere, several unearthed photos from the lens of the legendary Herb Greene. These
first time issued photos show the very first sittings of the Grateful Dead and will make your listening hours that much more enjoyable as
you stare at the brilliant pictures of your favorite rockers in this very special era.

As a further installment in the exclusive and authorized Grateful Dead Friday Music 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl Series, this fine
album is part of a historical two part audiophile vinyl series along with the Birth Of The Dead Volume Two-The Live Sides which will be

    Long May You Sing

    Direct Metal Master Cut Vinyl

Paul O'Brien is a songwriter with deep roots and broad horizons. An English-born child of Irish immigrants, he cut his teeth on Irish music. A natural story teller, Paul O'Brien has developed an eclectic folk style that is broadly appealing and not easily categorized.

A working class poet from British Columbia with a knack for straightforward language held aloft by a sweet gift of melody ... - Boulevard Magazine

The second studio album from Stockfisch records is an album of Canadian classics plus a brand new song written by Paul. On this album Paul O'Brien is joined (among others) by master Canadian guitar player and composer Don Ross. On the album there are songs written by Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, and Leonard Cohen to name but a few.

There's something which connects all the songs on this album: all are by Canadian composers. This is much more than a mere collection of hits - thanks to the poetic, strong and never sentimental interpretations of Paul O'Brien.

Canada is often not taken so seriously - particularly in Europe it is often regarded as a mere extension of the USA, a secret 51st federal state, at the most a paradise for sled dogs and canoe enthusiasts. Paul O'Brien breaks with these clichÉs on his album Long May You Sing and opens up a whole new perspective. He openly admits to have felt like a child in a sweet shop, picking out these songs by the great Canadian composers.

Paul O'Brien about this recording: This collection of songs is the audio equivalent of the "big kid in the candy store". To be able to choose my favourite songs written by Canadian writers was one of the most enjoyable experiences I as a singer could have. On the other hand however, it was the most frustrating because there were so many songs I could have, and perhaps should have chosen. I have a feeling this will be but Volume 1 of a long labour of love.

All of these songs have in some way touched me more than the fact they are amazing pieces of art. It was not simply cherry picking (although when I look now at the track list it looks just like cherry picking). I have taken a few artistic liberties with these tunes, and I truly hope I do not offend anyone, but it seemed to me that I had to try at least to add a little of me to the performances.

Paul O'Brien was brought up in England, received an Irish-Catholic education and formed his own musical identity in pubs and at festivals, with the inevitable mixture of positive & strengthening, but also negative and sobering experiences. In 2004, enough was enough - he shut his guitar away in its case and moved with his family to Canada, settling high up in the North-West - a barren landscape, the beauty of which he often documents with photos on Facebook (including pics of the beloved family Labrador Dooley).

Even at the risk of sounding sentimental: this country and this landscape changed him - changed the musician within - in a very positive and creative sense. He took the banished guitar out of its case and the music flowed. This artistic output reached new heights on his album for Stockfisch Records Walk Back Home. The more recent album, Long May You Sing, could even top that - it is a hymn to his new way of life.

All songs are by Canadian writers - from Bruce Cockburn, Gordon Lightfoot and Paul O'Brien right up to Neil Young, whose long Long May You Run inspired the title of the album. The original impulse for this project is not a secret. The idea came while thinking about doing something for Joni Mitchell's 70th birthday. As a tribute Paul decided to record a version of Big Yellow Taxi.

A big part in this production was played by Canadian master-guitarist and composer Don Ross, who also contributed two solo instrumental pieces. One particular piece just had to be on the album, for all those who wish to celebrate Canada's independent musical integrity: Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. All these songs move Paul emotionally - in his own words more than just in their function as fantastic works of art. This project is for him a mixture of thankfulness, fascination and positive energy from the heart of a very special country. the album has the greatness, the potential and the chance as volume one of a long labour of love' to go to the top of Paul's personal hit-parade.
