    Global A Go-Go

Even when he was leading the Clash, Joe Strummer always incorporated his interest in disparate musical styles into his work. 20 years down the road, he's achieved enough distance from the Clash to express himself fully and freely, so GLOBAL A GO-GO is Strummer's most stylistically diverse offering to date. The album opens with the American folk motifs of Johnny Appleseed before moving on to the churning, funky Cool 'N' Out. The title tune combines hypnotic trip-hop keyboards, reggae guitar, and percolating percussion to celebrate the joys of international communication. Bhindi Bhagee successfully combines electronica beats with Eastern tonalities. Gamma Ray is a surreal Cuban-style slow-burner that recalls the Latin Playboys. Mondo Bongo and Shaktar Donetsk sound like excerpts from a film noir soundtrack set somewhere in Morocco. The album closes with the epic 17-minutes-plus Minstrel Boy, a folkish selection filled with atmospheric fiddle and acoustic guitar, nearly all instrumental. It continues the soundtrack-like feeling achieved by the earlier cuts, and leaves the listener flouting on a cloud of hazy Celtic mist. Throughout the album, Strummer evinces his trademark socio-political awareness in the lyrics, but he sounds much less angry than in punk's glory days. Sometimes maturity can work for you.

    Getz Au Go Go

Although the name Stan Getz (tenor sax) was initially synonymous with the West Coast cool scene during the mid-to-late 1950s, he likewise became a key component in the Bossa Nova craze of the early 1960s. Getz Au Go Go (1965) is Stan Getz in his prime, recorded with perhaps one of the best quartets of his career, featuring Bossa Nova singer Astrud Gilberto.

The album was recorded in 1964 during two concerts in the venerable Greenwich Village venue, the CafÉ Au Go Go, two months after Astrud Gilberto's Girl From Ipanema became a Top Five pop single. However, the focus of Getz Au Go Go steers away from the Brazilian flavored fare, bringing Gilberto into the realm of a decidedly more North American style.

That said, there are a few Antonio Carlos Jobim compositions -- Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars) and One Note Samba -- both of which would be considered as jazz standards in years to follow. The album boasts wonderful versions of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein's It Might as Well Be Spring, and the scintillating instrumental Summertime, from Porgy & Bess.

The band features a young Gary Burton (vibraphone), Kenny Burrell (guitar), Gene Cherico (bass), and Joe Hunt (drums). There are a few personnel substitutions, with Helcio Milito (drums) and Chuck Israels (bass), respectively, filling in. Getz Au Go Go is highly recommended for all dimensions of jazz enthusiasts.

    Go Go Harlem Baby

Third Man Records presents the reissue of the Flat Duo Jets hard to find classic 1991 release Go Go Harlem Baby. The piece de resistance of Dex Romwebers voluminous back catalog, ably backed by the trusty Chris Crow Smith on drums, the album is as solid an LP as you will ever find. Some of you may remember Jack White dropping the needle on the Jets version of Froggy Went a Courtin in the It Might Get Loud doc as an indicator of his early influences. Maybe you remember the White Stripes covering You Belong to Me or Apple Blossom Time in their live performances. Those songs, as well as all the rest featured on Go Go Harlem Baby are genuinely important in the pantheon of American music. Out-of-print on vinyl since its original issue 20-years ago, Third Man Records worked solidly for a year-and-a-half to make this record available once again!

Scofield Is Joined By Medeski, Martin & Wood For This Collaborative Album Of Avant-Jazz-funk Music.

John Scofield owes a great deal to Medeski, Martin & Wood for the success of A Go Go. The piano/organ, bass, and drum playing trio adds a world of bouncing vibes to Scofield's inquisitive, happy guitar work here. A Go Go is an album of mostly breezy, sometimes tense, jam-based grooves. The album's charm is in its city meets the tropics feel. The four players create such a warm, vibrant sound that resisting the urge to tap one's feet along with the beat becomes a near impossibility. - All Music Guide

Although, originally hailing from different parts of the UK, the Lovvers formed while all four members were living in Nottingham in 2005. The group re-calls the spirit of the Germs, the weirdeness of Flipper, the pop-style of the Wipers, and the carefree attitude of The Replacements.

Having released four noisy 7 singles, the band signed to Wichita Recordings in 2008 and released the Think EP that same year. With OCD Go Go Girls the Lovvers set about making a record that in their own words is an unconventional weird pop record. The first single of the same name takes the Real Kids or Television and perhaps adds a touch of influence from the Lovvers other favorite bands, such as No Age or Times New Viking. The album is new-meets-old but by the end its fuzzed out Woodstock. This is vintage stuff; a completely analog recording.

Nobody burrowed more deeply into a song than Otis Redding -the most emotive, soulful singer the '60s ever produced. With the Stax/Volt horn section wailing in his wake, Redding's grainy voice and impassioned, sweat-soaked delivery kept him straddling both pop and soul charts until his untimely death in 1967. Here is an 180-gram vinyl exact reproduction of 1968's In Person At The Whisky A Go Go in knockout stereo. Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fabulous!

Recorded at the famous L.A. club Whisky A Go Go in 1966, this album captures the raw energy of a small Otis Redding gig. Playing with his own touring band (not Booker T & the MG's as per his Monterey gig and European performances), this is Otis in his tried & true form - with a kick-ass band that blew the chitlin circuit's roofs off.

Roaring versions of Respect, I Can't Turn You Loose, These Arms Of Mine and Papa's Got A Brand New Bag are the definitive Otis Redding live tracks anyone should own.

"Nothing short of amazing" - Relix Magazine

    "He's the world's best-kept secret" - Bonnie Raitt

"[Jon Cleary's] genre-bending style is steeped in early traditional New Orleans R&B, soul and funk. " - LA Times

GoGo Juice is the new album from one of New Orleans' premier musical ambassadors, Jon Cleary. Made in collaboration with multi-Grammy winning producer John Porter (B.B. King, Keb Mo, Ryan Adams, Los Lonely Boys) each of the carefully crafted songs is a delicate balance of the smooth and the rough; instantly memorable hooks over a set of sophisticated and soulful arrangements. The tracks were recorded over several days deep in the bayou country of Louisiana and subsequently honed in his studio in the old Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans. A blend of musical intelligence with direct, accessible pop simplicity that draws from tradition and yet is distinctively separate from it, these songs represent the many aspects of Cleary's musical personality as a multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter.

    Getz Au Go-Go

Mastered by Bernie Grundman from the Original Analog Master Tapes! Only 2500 Numbered Limited Edition Copies Worldwide!

It was one of those rare nights of absolute communication - the New York City opening of the New Stan Getz Quartet.

Stan had chosen the Cafe Au Go Go for this occasion because of its fine acoustics and its intimacy. Atmosphere was paramount to the first New York presentation of the New Stan Getz Quartet and Astrud Gilberto because of the soft, easy quality of their music. Astrud had already won acclaim for her work with Getz in the album Getz/Gilberto (V/V 6-8548), which also stars Astrud's husband Joao Gilberto as well, and this threesome's single from the album The Girl From Ipanema was rapidly rising on the best-selling charts.

This, is the stunning New Stan Getz Quartet with Astrud Gilberto at Cafe Au Go Go. Reflected here are the excitement, warmth and communication of that memorable engagement." -Gene Lees, from the liner notes of Getz Au Go Go

Although the name Stan Getz (tenor sax) was initially synonymous with the West Coast cool scene during the mid-to-late 1950s, he likewise became a key component in the Bossa Nova craze of the early 1960s... Getz Au Go Go featuring Astrud Gilberto (1964) was the second-to-last album that he would issue during his self-proclaimed Bossa Nova Era- the final being Getz/Gilberto #2 [live] (1964) concert title from Carnegie Hall. ... the focus of Getz Au Go Go steers away from the Brazilian flavored fare, bringing Astrud Gilberto into the realm of a decidedly more North American style. That said, there are a few Antonio Carlos Jobim compositions - Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars); and One Note Samba - both of which would be considered as jazz standards in years to follow - as well as the lesser-circulated Eu E Voco.- All Music Guide

    Blood Red River

After trekking east from the suburbs of Perth to take new root in Sydney, in 1983 the Scientists hooked up with producer Chris Logan, who's credited with the album's imposing sonic girth and rumbling low end, and premier Aussie punk label Au Go Go for an album that would define their unmistakably swampy, psychotic aura. These six songs revisited band leader Kim Salmon's interest in the Cramps and the Stooges, while adding in the repetitive dementia of Suicide and elements of cow punk twang, with Salmon's distinctly unrefined Australian accent snarling tales of lust, confusion and angst.

    Origin: Orphan

The Hidden Cameras never fail to capture the imagination. Orchestrated by leader Joel Gibb, their live spectacles are unconventional to say the least, everything from blindfolded band members and string players to go-go dancers shimmying alongside gospel choirs. The Hidden Cameras fifth full-length album, Origin:Orphan, is equally ingenious as the four previous albums.

No matter the subject, Gibb knows the power and importance of melodies and harmonies in a pop song and has displayed it with elegant indie pop orchestrations and abundant twee-choir harmonies. Under The Radar

    Covered In Black

And they are glorious, beautiful. Sounding a bit like She &
Him might were they produced by Sufjan Stevens - to create a
sort of She & She & She & She, they are four alt-pop Brontës
who beam right into your stereo like a comforting aural torch
you never need to buy batteries for. - Drowned In Sound

"Best referenced midway between the Bangles and Go-Gos in
terms of a girl group approach, there's a kind of slacker
sensibility at work here, one that never muffles the drive or
conviction. I was meant for something more, Cottingham
sings on the final track, aptly entitled Anything and indeed a
lyric has never sounded so true." - Blurt

Precociousness always catches its observer off guard; we are
witness to a stubborn incongruity, a disproportionate relationship
between limited years and elevated levels of skill, insight, or
vision. It confounds common experience, and we wonder. When
Ortolan's debut album Time On A String was released in 2010,
three quarters of the family foursome were yet under drinking
age. Along with copious kudos given to the quality of the music
and the maturity of the songwriting, every single review made
mention of their age. Wonder indeed.

What may be the greater marvel though, is when a nascent talent
starts to grow into itself; when prodigious promise begins to
deliver something beyond spectacle, when it begins to nourish
those who are witness to it. Such is the case with Ortolan's latest,
    Covered In Black.

The pulse at the heart of Ortolan's music has always been
Stephanie Cottingham's voice, a curious combination of
innocence, wisdom, and wit (all rare commodities in the greater
landscape of popular music today). These beguiling qualities
remain, but here her voice is imbued with a greater richness. The
bandwidth of color, hue, and shade has widened; the reds are
redder and the blues are bluer. Even more significant though, is
Cottingham's development as an interpreter of her own songs.
Her voice remains a thing to behold, but in the tradition of Kitty
Wells, Etta James, or Emmylou Harris, she is becoming a
storyteller. Each note is now is its own scene in a greater drama.
Each vocal push and lilt tells of loss and love, fear and
    friendship.

As much as Ortolan is about Stephanie Cottingham's voice and
songwriting, it is about family, and the picture is incomplete
without the powerful presence of Jill (keys), Briana (bass), and
Lara (drums). Floor toms drum and drive, strumming guitars
strum and strum faster, basses rock and keyboards swirl and
swoop. Their commitment to one another is palpable, and is as
important to the music as the notes and rhythms they're playing.

That their voices also join Stephanie's throughout the record is
not insignificant. There is an excess of animosity in the world: so
much time is spent competing, resisting, debating, conflicting,
arguing. There is something so vital and humane in joining voices
for once, in unison. One of the simplest and most powerful
activities of human beings is singing together, and this is a
central ingredient to Ortolan's music and life. Nothing is
pretended-it's what they do: voices are raised and raised
together -- to cry, to question, to pray, to laugh, to celebrate.

The color black is achieved through the mixing of different
paints and opposing pigments; as such, black represents the
presence of color, not the absence of it, and Ortolan's latest is
    covered in it.
