The Three Sounds were part of the trio explosion. Begun in 1956 in Benton Harbor, Michigan as the Four Sounds and consisting of Gene Harris on piano, Andrew Simpkins on bass and Bill Dowdy on drums (the saxophonist was dropped by the time the group moved to Washington, D.C. in 1957), the Sounds eventually migrated to New York City where they were discovered by Lou Donaldson. After a single record for Riverside with Nat Adderley, the Three Sounds signed an exclusive contract with Alfred Lion on Blue Note Records. Over the course of five years, the Sounds released nine LPs and appeared on albums by Lou Donaldson and Stanley Turrentine.

This is a completely new mastering and pressing of this famous release. Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio did exceptional mastering work for this new double LP, cut at 45 RPM, and pressed by none other than the world's finest LP manufacturing plant, Quality Record Pressings. Gary Salstrom, QRP's general manager and master plating technician, plated the lacquers, and lastly we redesigned the artwork for this deluxe gatefold jacket presentation.
This album is important as an early milestone in pianist Gene Harris' second career. Harris, who had led the popular Three Sounds in the 1960s, had been living in obscurity in Boise, ID, for several years before he was urged by bassist Ray Brown to come to the West Coast for some recording sessions. Harris became a permanent member of Brown's regular trio for quite a few years before launching his own quartet. He had lost none of his technique, soul, or swing in the interim, as he shows throughout this fine release. Seven of the eight numbers (highlighted by 'Exactly Like You,' 'Teach Me Tonight,' and 'Sweet Georgia Brown') feature Brown, Harris, and drummer Gerryck King playing soulful bop, while 'Mistreated But Undefeated Blues' adds guitarist Emily Remler and the tenor of Red Holloway. In The Winner's Circle (Pure Pleasure)
Rare stuff from John Coltrane! The album features 'Trane' playing tenor on only 4 of the album's 8 tracks - making it kind of surprising that they used his name in the title - but the album is a lesser-known batch of large group recordings that offer an interesting early chapter in his career! The main force behind the album is arranger Harry Tubbs - possibly not a name that's as sexy as John Coltrane, hence the billing - but a worthy leader for the date, given the quality of the music.
Many of the other players here are small combo heroes who can also shine brightly in bigger groups - such as Donald Byrd and Art Farmer on trumpets, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Al Cohn on baritone sax, Eddie Costa on piano and vibes, and Oscar Pettiford on bass - plus Rolf Kuhn, making an early American appearance on clarinet. Coltrane gets in some nice, but short moments on the date - but the bigger charm is the full ensemble work - on titles that include She Didn't Say Yes, Turtle Walk, At Home With The Blues, Seabreeze, and Love & The Weather.

About Pure Pleasure
At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.
During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.
A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.
We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.
We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

Blue Hour has such a logical match up that it is very surprising that it did not happen again. Stanley Turrentine, the most soulful of all tenor-saxophonists, teams up with Gene Harris and the Three Sounds, one of the most swinging soul jazz trios, a group that was at the height of its popularity. The results are magical and timeless. At the time of this Dec. 16, 1960 recording, Stanley Turrentine was 26 and on the verge of stardom in the jazz world and beyond. In the 1950s he had worked with Lowell Fulson, Earl Bostic and other r&b bands. Most significant were his 1959-60 stint with Max Roach and his recordings with Jimmy Smith which helped lead to his signing with Blue Note. From the start, Turrentine's fat tone, soulful style and ability to put a maximum amount of emotion into every single note made him instantly recognizable. Gene Harris was Turrentine's equivalent on piano. His gutsy and bluesy style mixed together Oscar Peterson with Junior Mance. He formed the Three Sounds with bassist Andy Simpkins and drummer Bill Dowdy in 1956 and the group was such a hit that they recorded 12 albums for Blue Note during 1958-62 including four in 1960 alone. Blue Hour features the original "Blue Riff" plus four of the most beloved songs in blues and jazz history. No matter how many times one has heard such songs as "Gee Baby, Ain't I Good To You," "Willow Weep For Me" and "Since I Fell For You," these versions are still very special. Turrentine and Harris have similar approaches, being jazz masters who loved to play the blues. They constantly echo each other's ideas and put such feeling into these vintage songs that they make every moment count. Stanley Turrentine and Gene Harris may have only teamed up this one time but Blue Hour is a classic that will be loved by anyone who is lucky enough to hear it.

Instant ReplayThe Monkees have been one of the world's most enduring rock and pop acts of all time. Since their beginnings in 1966, their television show, multiplatinum albums, hit singles and concert tours truly made The Monkees one of the most colossal stories in the music business. In 1969, Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith and Micky Dolenz went back to the studio as a trio this time and recorded the classic Instant Replay album. Noted for their hit single Tear Drop City, this masterwork also found The Monkees reuniting with the production team of Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart for several of the tracks as well as previous team Monkees writers like Carole King and Neil Sedaka, and highly touted producers like Bones Howe (The Association/Tom Waits) and Shorty Rogers and resulted in some of the finest collaborations ever with this superstar act. Instant Replay also offered the first look at Michael Nesmith's experimental and groundbreaking recording sessions in Nashville as well as solid compositions from all three Monkees.
Opening up with the pop rocker Through The Looking Glass, Micky Dolenz is on top of his game vocally with a brilliant background of horns, Bobby Hart on piano and guitar work by legends Keith Allison (Paul Revere & The Raiders) and Gerry McGee (The Ventures/John Mayall). A major fan favorite, this classic was performed at many of the reunion concerts over the years. The late great Davy Jones belts out another Boyce and Hart classic with the haunting ballad Don't Listen To Linda. The tune truly resonated with the fans back then and continues to be one of the more appreciated classics in his long list of time tested Monkees favorites. Carole King and Gerry Goffin's I Won't Be The Same Without Her features a strong vocal performance by Michael Nesmith and the stunning guitar work of both Monkees' Peter Tork and Glen Campbell. A real summer time feeling song, this track would be a nice bridge to Micky Dolenz's orchestral masterpiece Just A Game.
It is no secret that Nesmith was a fan of country music, but also lauded as one of the first pioneers of the country rock genre, not only with his contributions to the earlier Monkees' recordings as far back as Papa Gene's Blues, even for other noted artists like Linda Ronstadt for whom he penned her first smash single Different Drum. For the Instant Replay album, Nesmith ventured to Nashville's RCA Studios and cut Don't Wait For Me, the first released tune from his now famous Nashville sessions. With the fusion of country studio players and the voice and guitar of Michael Nesmith, The Monkees again were on the forefront of this new genre and would continue with this groundbreaking sound ever more so into future classics like The Monkees Present.
As the '60s would come to a close, Davy Jones would also contribute his major impact on the generation with his truly hip and psychedelic masterpiece You And I. Noted for its hard rock opening to side two, the track also features the stunning lead guitar textures of Neil Young who recently departed with The Buffalo Springfield. More favorites like Nesmith's While I Cry is one of the artist's finest compositions of the era. With Mike's beautiful acoustic guitar work and help from friends like Harry Nilsson, this ballad would truly become one of the more enduring songs from this 1969 classic Monkees album.
Neil Sedaka and Carol Bayer Sager contribute one of the classiest Monkees ballads ever with The Girl I Left Behind Me. Once again, the late great Davy Jones provides a superstar vocal second to none, with a soulful orchestra fill and band setting featuring the production and skillful piano work of Neil Sedaka, while Micky Dolenz would close out the album with his classic Shorty Blackwell. The whimsical tale of Micky's cat and a nod to his friends The Beatles' A Day In The Life, Shorty Blackwell would take almost a year to record and feature a bevy of the original wrecking crew of Hollywood musicians like drummer Jim Gordon (Eric Clapton/Traffic), Tommy Tedesco on guitar and even his sister Coco Dolenz on vocals. This track along with the other eleven tunes make this one of the more enduring and loved albums in the superior catalog of Monkees classics.

For a quarter century, Dex Romweber has trolled the dark corners and back shelves of the haunted thrift store of Americana ephemera and honed an extraordinarily idiomatic sound, a particular and readily identifiable DEXness for those in the know. It's a creepy doll collection of surf, proto-rockabilly, garage, dark and vengeful blues, and nobody, but nobody, plays it like Dex. First with the legendary Flat Duo Jets and now with his Duo, Dex distilled the punk ethos of less-is-more to the essential guitar/drums template. Left in the wake of his lecherous and slithery Silvertone were early acolytes like Jack White, Neko Case, and the Reigning Sound as well as a current crop of the indie pack like Ty Segall, No Age, Japandroids, and The Black Keys. All owe an unclaimed pawn ticket of debt to his sublime and spine-tingling sound. He is a live wire back to the murky, sometimes dangerous and always unpredictable headwaters of real rock and roll.
Dex, with his whip-wristed sister Sara Romweber on drums, take Images 13 through neon-lit alleys, full of pulp fiction juvey rock, sci-fi theme songs and greasy denim hipster jive. Effortlessly versatile and raucously dismissive of genre constraints, exciting and darkly romantic, Images 13 would make everyone from Duane Eddy to Stan Kenton to Lenny Bruce crack a smile, a joke or the seal on a fifth of rye and head for the Naugahyde ice bucket.
Recorded at Rick Miller's (Southern Culture on the Skids) Kudzu Ranch studio in North Carolina, the album bristles with a sense of drama, of tension, of release, of mystery. "Roll On" and "Long Battle Coming" display the cinematic sleaze nestled between The Cramps and West Side Story. Eerie ballads "Baby I Know What It's Like to be Alone" and "I Don't Want to Listen" reveal the crooning, bruised romantic, the harsh morning light of a strange hotel room, a Raymond Chandler novel on the bedside table. "Beyond the Moonlight" is part sea shanty longing and part campfire revival. Then, just as easily, the instrumentals take center stage. "Blackout!" updates Henry Mancini's Peter Gunn theme with a dynamic tension and sly cool, and Dex and Sara attack the big waves off Maui with a chaotic rush on "Blue Surf" - his guitar guiding you into the sweet spot of the pipeline and her drums pounding you into the sand. Hey Tarantino, wake up!
Digging into the skeleton-filled rock 'n' roll closet, Dex Romweber Duo comes up with some obscure and wonderful gems. The early Who track "So Sad About Us," featuring Mary Huff (SCOTS) on vocals, hits an uncharacteristically sunny power pop vibe. The hopeful "We'll Be Together Again" written by Eddie Cochran's girlfriend Sharon Sheeley about his death in a car accident (that she and Gene Vincent survived). The song was never released formally but recorded by Jackie DeShannon in the early '60s. Finishing up the album is the music of Harry Lubin, who did theme music for shows like The Outer Limits and One Step Beyond. "Weird (Aurora Borealis)" is the music from the latter when ghosts, UFO's, or odd paranormal experiences begin to rear their strange heads, complete with tribal drums and Melissa Swingle (Trailer Bride, The Moaners) on the saw.
Flat Duo Jets - so often emulated, so rarely duplicated - released the first of nine albums in 1990 to rave reviews worldwide. They starred, alongside R.E.M. and The B-52s, in the 1987 cult classic film Athens, GA: Inside/Out. Their first national tour in 1990 was as opening act for The Cramps and they made a stunning impression on Late Night with David Letterman. Dex Romweber Duo's first record Ruins of Berlin featured guest appearances by Neko Case, Cat Power, and Exene Cervenka. Dex was name-checked by Jack White in the guitar superstar documentary It Might Get Loud, and the Duo recorded a single and live album with White for his label Third Man Records in 2009. Subsequently, the Duo has shared the stage with dozens of rock icons including Wanda Jackson, Cat Power, Neko Case, and The White Stripes.
