The late Nashville songwriter Harlan Howard famously defined the ingredients of a great song as three chords and the truth. Every songwriter knows three chords, but laying bare the truth? Now that can be an altogether trickier affair. In January of 2012, The Gaslight Anthem piled into their old tour van and headed across the New Jersey state line for a 14 hour road trip to Nashville on their own quest for the truth. Their destination was 2806 Azalea Place, Nashville, Blackbird Studio, where the New Brunswick quartet had booked five weeks recording time with producer Brendan O'Brien (Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, AC/DC). Their mission: to reconnect with rock 'n' roll in its most feral, pure, stripped-raw form.
Brian Fallon was thirteen years old when he discovered The Clash's self-titled debut album in the racks of Sound Effects Records in Hackettstown, New Jersey: the owner of the store promised the young teenager that the record would change his life. He wasn't wrong. But there was a time, not so very long ago, when The Gaslight's Anthem frontman had grown weary of the sound of electric guitars. After three albums of soulful, impassioned, hearts-on-fire punk rock, Sink Or Swim (2007), The '59 Sound (2008) and American Slang (2010), Fallon needed a change of pace, a change of scenery.
And so, in January of 2011, together with TGA guitar tech Ian Perkins, he formed The Horrible Crowes, a darkly melancholic side-project inspired by his love of The Afghan Whigs, Tom Waits and PJ Harvey. After the band's acclaimed debut album Elsie dropped in September, Fallon joined fellow punk rock troubadours Chuck Ragan, Dan Andriano (Alkaline Trio) and Dave Hause (The Loved Ones) on the acoustic Revival Tour, airing stripped-down versions of Gaslight Anthem and Horrible Crowes songs to packed rooms across Europe. And then he returned home to New Jersey and Gaslight, re-energized, renewed and ready to make a full-tilt rock 'n' roll record again.
After six weeks of that there's nothing you want to hear more than a Marshall stack turned all the way up, he says with a laugh. The result is Handwritten, the most committed, affecting and compelling album of The Gaslight Anthem's career to date. Introduced by muscular lead-off single 45, which received it's world premiere on BBC Radio 1 as Zane Lowe's Hottest Record In The World on April 30, it finds the Jersey boys in inspired form, decanting '60's soul, '70's stadium rock, '80s hardcore and '90's grunge into eleven white-knuckle, blue-collar everyman anthems. Fallon likens its incandescent electrical storms to Tom Petty songs (being) played by Pearl Jam. Put more simply, it's a supercharged American rock 'n' roll classic.
We've taken everything we do and gone to 10 with it, explains Fallon. This is definitely the Gaslight Anthem record I would want next, if I were a fan. American Slang was cool, but this sounds like a band who has plugged back into the electric socket again. I think these songs are the closest thing to what we should have always sounded like, adds guitarist Alex Rosamilia. We just hadn't figured out yet how to play it right.
Fallon credits Brendan O'Brien for capturing the raw, live-off-the-floor feel of Handwritten. Fine-tuned in the living room of the small rental house the band shared in Nashville, its eleven tracks were recorded with the whole band eyeball-to-eyeball in one room at Blackbird, vibing off one another's energy. The electricity in the recordings is tangible. Brendan taught us a ton about songwriting and recording as a band, Fallon notes. The whole experience was amazing. That's the guy that recorded Pearl Jam, that's the guy that recorded Bruce Springsteen, that's the guy that did Rage Against The Machine; and that's the guy you want to say 'It's good', because when he says it's good, that's when it's good.
The purity of O'Brien's stark, unadorned recording process served to inspire Fallon's approach to the lyrical themes on Handwritten too. Where previous Gaslight Anthem albums evoked deathless images of Americana, all Cadillacs, jukeboxes, Ferris wheels and wistful, romanticized vignettes of star-struck lovers disappearing into the great wide open, Handwritten is rooted in Fallon's own experiences, lending the record a more immediate, emotional edge. Now I am no angel but I got nothing to hide, the singer rasps on the brooding grunge-noir of Too Much Blood. Can you say the same thing for yourself tonight?
It's supposed to be a letter to whoever is listening, says Fallon. Like, this is what we got beat up by and maybe you did too. There's so many things that I just never wrote about, real personal stuff that I just wasn't ready to talk about yet. Now I think being an adult I have some reflection on it. We wanted to look back on the music that we first found when we were in high school. The truth is, if you're my age, you were listening to Peal Jam and Nirvana and Soundgarden. When that music came out these were guys that we could relate to. They weren't the biggest bands in the world by accident.
And it's no accident either that with Handwritten, the Gaslight Anthem themselves sound built to take on the world. After years paying their dues in the punk rock underground, their major label debut is assuredly the work of a young band who know their time is now. And their laidback, charismatic frontman is ready. I've always been ready for arenas, Fallon smiles. I've just been waiting for them to catch up to me. I want to play Giant Stadium, I always wanted to be a major label, major league band. If I can be the kid that's on the cover of Time magazine, I'll take it. The trio's third album, released in December of 1963, featured liner notes by none other than Bob Dylan and the well-known folk tune Blowin' In the Wind alongside Tell It On the Mountain.
Their third recording was one of the group's stronger outings, even if it confirms their status as folk popularizers rather than musical innovators. In particular, this record was essential to boosting the profile of Bob Dylan, including their huge hit cover of Blowin' in the Wind, their Top Ten version of Don't Think Twice, It's All Right, and the bluesy Quit Your Lowdown Ways, which Dylan himself would not release in the '60s (although his version finally came out on The Bootleg Series). Stewball, All My Trials, and Tell It on the Mountain were other highlights of their early repertoire, and the dramatic, strident, but inspirational Very Last Day is one of the best original tunes the group ever did. - allmusic.com

While it's true I did endure a terrible break-up at the beginning of writing this record, this is not a break
up record. Dagger Beach is a put-me-the-fuck-back-together record.
The break up came in late 2011, after endless months of White Wilderness touring. I returned home to an
empty house, and, as that's pretty unbearable when you're not quite right in the head, I decided to set out
walking. I hiked the Lost Coast (36 miles of off-the-grid splendor in Southern Humboldt County), I hiked
the entire 150-mile trail system of Pt. Reyes, I hiked for days, deep, deep in the woods, usually alone.
As I walked and walked, listening to records on repeat, I started obsessing about music again. Three
records found their way into my psyche and inspired much of this new record: Joanna Newsom's Have
One On Me, Silver Jews' The Natural Bridge, and Radiohead's King Of Limbs. I don't think you'll find
traces of these records in Dagger Beach, but their spirit and fearlessness deeply affected me. (Hence the
shout-out on the record to one of my lifelong heroes, David Berman.)
The first two reminded me how crucial great lyrics can be, how your experience of a record can evolve
and change as you slowly decode complex and thoughtful writing. King Of Limbsshowed me how
powerful linear songwriting can be, when subtle changes in form and repeating motifs slowly shift into
something else entirely (just try to follow Morning Mr. Magpie on headphones). There are many songs
on Dagger Beach that take this approach: Damage Control and Gaslight were both written to drum
patterns played by Jason Slota, my long-time partner. Jason played drums alone, without music, and I
adapted to his structures and rhythms. Doing this keeps me from relying on my usual tricks and
structures and forces me into brand new territory.
This strange experience, the endless hiking and backcountry camping off the grid, it completely changed
the songwriting process for me. I edited lyrics while walking, I worked out songs in my head. It didn't
come easy: the first time I camped alone (I was deep inside the million-acre Mendocino National Forest) I
freaked out, ended my trip early, and wrote Raw Wood the next day. By the end of 2012, I could stay out
for a week on my own.
As the experience changed me, it changed the record. Dagger Beach is looser, weirder, and more free

Rarities Vol. 1: The CoversNo Use For A Name is one of THE most successful and prolific acts to come out of the 90's skate-punk scene. But there's a lot more to it than that. Just have a look at their family tree, it has bands like Spazz, Foo Fighters, and Suicidal Tendencies to count among its branches. No really, think about that: the dude from that infamous grindcore band was in NUFAN?!? Their long, unpredictable journey has been full of twists, turns, and alternate routes that led them to be one of the best-selling outfits of their genre. They've done it all: Warped Tour's main stage, MTV, a live record, and an even a recent greatest hits album entitled, All The Best Songs. Early No Use releases appeared on New Red Archives, a San Francisco punk label operated by Nicky Garratt of the UK Subs. Believe it or not, in the late 80's it actually made sense that they would be labelmates with Reagan Youth, Social Unrest, and Christ On A Crutch. An AllMusic review describes their early material as, hulking hardcore with mighty fists full of metal. Angry and Threatening. This was a gritty, hardcore punk band, known mostly for their growling vocals and dark lyrical themes. Then came the first unforeseen occurrence: frontman Tony Sly unexpectedly developed into a proficient songwriter and mastered melody like few punk bands can ever do. Nobody knows where those gifts come from and you never see it coming, but suddenly No Use For A Name was starting to make music that people actually liked.
As is natural, the band kept evolving, and things changed in a major way for the band when they signed to Fat Wreck Chords in the mid-90's. Their 8-song Fat debut, The Daily Grind EP, drew comparisons to Bad Religion and was a marked step up, but it was 1995's, ¡Leche con Carne!, that would cement No Use For A Name as a successful band for years to come. The album was their best yet and bore a hit song (Soul Mate) that landed them on alternative radio charts, which, for a scrappy punk band, was a complete deviation from industry norms. Stranger yet, was that they made a music video and MTV even played the damn thing! What followed obviously was commercial success in the form of six-figure album sales, another anomaly in the world of indie-punk bands and something that would set the stage for later melodic punk bands like Blink 182, et al. From then on it was steady sailing with a string of successful records and tours from the band. Most notably was 1997's darker, and somehow faster, Making Friends; followed by 1999's hyper-catchy More Betterness!. It was during these halcyon days that Chris Shiflett held down 6-string duties for NUFAN before accepting an offer to join Foo Fighters on lead guitar.
The years went by for the perennial punk powerhouse and the band did numerous world tours, amassing album sales that would eventually total in the 7 figures. Pretty remarkable when you think about it. The new millennium was also a fruitful time for the boys. It started in 2001 with the release of their Live In A Dive album, which was very successful abroad where people were especially hungry for No Use's live performances. In 2002 they released their poppiest effort, Hard Rock Bottom, which was stocked with upbeat tempos and radio-friendly melodies. Their most recent and seemingly final studio album came in 2008. Ironically titled The Feel Good Album Of The Year, the album was a tinge darker and more aggressive than their recent releases and the band reminded us all that their songs still had urgency and bite.
After 25 years, No Use For A Name disbanded in 2012 when frontman Tony unexpectedly passed away. Anthony J. Sly (November 4, 1970 - July 31, 2012) died at home, in his sleep on a Tuesday morning, at age 41. Fat Mike-label head and long-time friend to Tony-was staggered by the news and offered, One of my dearest friends and favorite songwriters has gone way too soon. Tony, you will be greatly missed. No one could've predicted his passing, and needless to say, it shook the very foundation of the Fat Wreck family and the underground music community as a whole. Tony was loved and respected by a wide variety of artists and musicians, and nowhere is that more evident than the roster of contributors to The Songs of Tony Sly: A Tribute; a compilation of NUFAN songs covered by bands like Bad Religion, Frank Turner, The Gaslight Anthem, Alkaline Trio, and many more. Bands from the Americas, Europe, Australia, UK, and even Israel contributed to this final chapter in the storied career of No Use For A Name. The collection will be released on October 29th, 2013, and all proceeds will go towards the Tony Sly Memorial Fund, which has been established to help Tony's wife Brigitte and their daughters, Fiona and Keira.1. Carry Me Back was produced by Ted Hutt (Gaslight Anthem, Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly). Hutt pushed the band in a whole new way that they hadn't been pushed before. "Ted Hutt asked us to really dig deep as artists, as songwriters, to get to the heart of the matter of these songs and, especially, not to settle for anything less than their greatness," recalls Ketch Secor.
