Savage (Songs from a Broken World) (Pre-Order)

Marking Numan's 22nd full-length of his career, Savage follows 2013's Splinter (Songs From a Broken Mind). Produced by Ade Fenton and recorded in Los Angeles and the UK, the record was largely written during the last presidential election. Trump's victory and climate policies became Numan's twisted inspiration, leading to a concept album set in a post-global warming apocalypse. A press release describes the concept best:

There is no technology left and most of the planet has turned to a desolate desert wasteland. Food is scarce, water even more so, and human kindness and decency are just a dim and distant memory. Western and Eastern cultures have merged, more because of the need to simply survive than any feelings of greater tolerance or understanding. It's a harsh, savage environment, as are the survivors who still roam across it.

The songs are about the things that people do in such a harsh and terrifying environment, Numan said in a statement. It's about a desperate need to survive and they do awful things in order to do so, and some are haunted by what they've done. That desire to be forgiven, along with some discovered remnants of an old religious book, ultimately encourages religion to resurface, and it really goes downhill from there.

    The Pleasure Principle

The most popular of all the Gary Numan albums is undeniably 1979's The Pleasure Principle. The reasons are simple -- there is not a single weak moment on the disc, it contains his sole U.S. (number one worldwide) hit, "Cars." The Pleasure Principle is also one of the first Gary Numan albums to feature true ensemble playing, especially heard within the airtight, killer groove of "Metal" (one of Numan's all-time best tracks). Starting things off with the atmospheric instrumental "Airlane," the quality of the songs gets stronger and stronger as the album progresses -- "Films," "M.E.," "Observer," "Conversation," the aforementioned "Cars," and the U.K. Top Ten hit "Complex" all show Numan in top form. If you had to own just one Gary Numan album, The Pleasure Principle would be it.

    Replicas

By the release of their second album, Replicas, Gary Numan was the undisputed focal point and leader of icy electro-punkers Tubeway Army. And the move proved to be massively successful back home in the U.K., where both the album and the single "Are 'Friends' Electric?" topped the charts. The band had made a conscious effort to streamline the sound heard on its 1978 self-titled debut -- the distorted guitar riffs were played on Moog synthesizers instead, and Numan had perfected his faux-space-age persona. And the paranoia that is very evident in the lyrics and vocals on Numan's next release, The Pleasure Principle, can be detected on Replicas. Another near-perfect album by the band, highlights are many -- "Me! I Disconnect from You," "The Machman," "You Are in My Vision," and the chilling ballad "Down in the Park."

Splinter (Songs From A Broken Mind)

'Splinter' (Songs From A Broken Mind) is the inspired new album by pioneer, chart-topper and influential artist Gary Numan.'Splinter' features guitarist Robin Finck (Nine Inch Nails, Guns N Roses), is produced by long-standing collaborator Ade Fenton, and will be followed by a full national headline tour in November.

The album finds Gary on fine dark electronic form; sounding both cutting-edge and classic Numan, it marks his best work since the late 70s, early 80s heyday.'Splinter''s opening gambit 'I Am Dust' is a statement of intent, combining heavy grind with his archetypal anthemic pop skills. The unsettling whispered verses, crunchy guitars and Hans Zimmer-esque strings on 'Here In The Black' create a sense of menace and drama, whilst more orchestral work adorns the cinematic 'The Calling'. Slower-burning ballads 'Lost', 'Where I Can Never Be' and 'My Last Day', highlight the album's broad palate, adding elements of subtlety and even beauty in contrast to the album's more aggressive moments.

Gary's knack for sexy, idiosyncratic dancefloor killers is strongly evident on the pounding, growling throb of 'Love Hurt Bleed', whilst 'Who Are You' carries equal clout as-body-music-Numan-style - infectious, but sounding unlike anything else you might hear blasting from a soundsystem.
Although Numan released a straight-to-the-fanbase album 'Dead Son Rising' in 2011, this is his first self-penned full album since 'Jagged' in 2006.

In recent years he's been quoted as an influence by everyone from Lady Gaga to Kanye West, Matthew Dear to Queens Of The Stone Age, The Foo Fighters, Nine Inch Nails, Prince and J Dilla, to Boyz Noise, Richie Hawtin and Battles (they released a single 'My Machines' on Warp Records with Numan in 2011).
But while Numan's unique style continues to connect with fans from the worlds of metal, hip hop, electronica, industrial and indie, he remains as focussed as ever in pursuing his own singular vision. 'Splinter' sounds unique, while also utilising new sounds and ideas.

Perhaps it's the voice - one of the most distinctive in music and often associated with machines and icy alienation, but for those who are drawn to Numan's songs, his singing is strangely emotional, almost soulful in places. And if you like that side of his writing, you certainly won't be disappointed with the new album, where there are several tracks that set Numan's vocals against moody, atmospheric torch songs to stunning effect.

    Telekon

Gary Numan's follow-up to the flawless The Pleasure Principle was 1980's Telekon. Numan experimented with funk for the first time in his career ("Remind Me to Smile"), but there were still plenty of chilling synth excursions to keep the Numan faithful satisfied -- "This Wreckage," "The Aircrash Bureau," "I'm an Agent," and "I Dream of Wires" are all choice cuts. It debuted at the top of the UK Albums Chart in September 1980, making it his third consecutive No. 1 album.

    Speak & Spell

From the beginning of their career Depeche Mode have been at the forefront of remix culture; creating their own classic extended mixes back in the early 80s and over the years amassing a collection of remixers of their songs that pretty much charts the history of cutting edge dance music.

Though probably nobody fully appreciated it at the time -- perhaps least of all the band! -- Depeche Mode's debut is at once both a conservative, functional pop record and a groundbreaking release. While various synth pioneers had come before -- Gary Numan, early Human League, late-'70s Euro-disco, and above all Kraftwerk all had clear influence on Speak & Spell -- Depeche became the undisputed founder of straight-up synth pop with the album's 11 songs, light, hooky, and danceable numbers about love, life, and clubs. For all the claims about dated '80s sounds from rock purists, it should be noted that the basic guitar/bass/drums lineup of rock is almost 25 years older than the catchy keyboard lines and electronic drums making the music here. That such a sound would eventually become ubiquitous during the Reagan years, spawning lots of crud along the way, means the band should no more be held to blame for that than Motown and the Beatles for inspiring lots of bad stuff in the '60s. Credit for the album's success has to go to main songwriter Vince Clarke, who would extend and arguably perfect the synth pop formula with Yazoo and Erasure; the classic early singles New Life, Dreaming of Me, and Just Can't Get Enough, along with numbers ranging from the slyly homoerotic Pretty Boy to the moody thumper Photographic, keep everything moving throughout. David Gahan undersings about half the album, and Martin Gore's two numbers lack the distinctiveness of his later work, but Speak & Spell remains an undiluted joy.

    Teaspoon To The Ocean

Born in Louisville, raised in Georgia, educated in Michigan and bouncing between California and New York ever since, he has spent the last decade exploring a variety of approaches to psychedelic collage. In his audio
recordings, songs, videos, sculptures, digital paintings, chalk murals & written work he has attempted to harness the humour and ambiguous poignancy specific to the experience of dreaming.

The latest addition to Schuster-Craig's unique and under-exposed body of work comes in the form of Teaspoon To The Ocean, his debut album for Weird World. The eleven acid-country pop songs of Teaspoon To The
Ocean combine the cut-up lyrical style of avant garde literary great Gertrude Stein with influences ranging from Lindsay Buckingham to Meat Puppets by way of Roy Orbison, Gary Numan and Indonesian Campursari

    Fate

Post-punk leaning trio Soviet Soviet were born in 2008 on
the Adriatic coast of Pesaro, Italy by Alessandro
    Costantini (vocalist/guitarist), Andrea Giometti (lead
vocalist/bassist) and Alessandro Ferri (drums). In 2009,
they gained notoriety with a handful of self-released
singles and incessant touring. The trio followed up with the
Summer, Jesus EP in 2011, growing their reputation for
immediate and tightly wound live performances. For the
past year, the trio have converted that immediacy from the
stage into a proper studio, honing and fine-tuning the
production on their debut album, Fate.

Fate continues the path of past releases, but with a tighter
ferocity and sense of confidence in their unique sound
within the post-punk genre. The guitar has more bite, the
bass glows with a deeper tone and the drums are as
steady and punchy as ever. Standout single 1990 is
a great example of to-the-point, sharp guitar riffs and
heavy, propelling bass. The rhythms immediately gets
stuck in your head while Andrea's vocals oftentimes
channel Gary Numan but sped up with an Italian, ice-like
accent. No Lesson is driven by compact drums, never
missing a beat while bass and guitar lines intertwine with
frenetic energy. The track includes a rare introspective
moment in the middle of the track, sharing a newfound
step in the band's songwriting not recently heard, before
    exploding back into ferocity.

While post-punk is the easy descriptor, Soviet Soviet's
lens of the genre is much wider, grabbing from coldwave,
art punk and more, figuring out a way to make something
    fresh.

Prick was an American industrial rock band signed to Trent Reznor's Nothing Records imprint. Founded in 1992 in
Los Angeles by guitarist and songwriter Kevin McMahon, after his first project Lucky Pierre disbanded.

Here McMahon uses the basic production style of industrial metal, but twists it into a mix of Bowie glam rock and Gary
Numan new wave that sounds way ahead of its time. Pressed on vinyl for the first time, this is a must for fans

The debut release from both the Dead Weather and Third Man Records is two songs of dark, mysterious rock and roll with a violent edge. Smoke Fairies' second proper album, Blood Speaks, finally finds its domestic release here in the United States. Head, the venerated producer, returns for the new album, and their live band was also drafted in adding their intuitive version of the duo's evolving sound. Praised by everyone from Jack White to new wave pioneer Gary Numan, the Fairies have been gaining stateside attention for their early singles and EPs, and their debut Through Low Light And Trees in 2011.

The duo of Jessica Davies and Katherine Blamire have been on an epic journey, both physically and spiritually, touring Britain, Europe and America; in tour buses, ramshackle vans, and driving themselves 3000 miles across the US, all the while drawing increasingly devoted audiences with their exquisitely original and mesmerizing music. All these experiences bleed from every pore of Blood Speaks, undeniable proof of a tougher and more fearless Smoke Fairies.

"We've got more confident in what we're doing, and so we've pushed things more," says Katherine. "We've gotten bolder with the dynamics, and our influences have broadened."

"Blamire and Davies' dueling guitars, once nimble and clean, now shrouded in a mist, muggy and ancient, like some unholy union of Fairport convention and colour Haze" - Pitchfork

In the year of the saxophone, Santa Barbaras Gardens & Villa give us the flute. And along the way, G&V effectively wipe clear the vaseline from the murky bedroom funk of recent days. G&V bang out instant classics, each crystal clear and immaculate, but no less sweeping or languid. Their debut is a youthful exploration of just how opulent and pop starkness can go. It also leaves an impression of California in the way that Richard Diebekorns Ocean Park series or the pool party scene from The Graduate both do, always sensed more than stated outright.

Gardens & Villa channel all the taut pop precisions of '90s Britpop of bands like Blur, and send it through an '80s synth filter both undeniably coastal and modern. Its Spoons Kill The Moonlight lost in a daydream, but with that same hungry energy. Gardens & Villa may simultaneously pull from Gary Numan, The Kinks and odder prog within one composition. And like a fine sweet tea, its made just that right kind of sugary, though even the most upbeat tunes have an undercurrent of the bittersweet and the lost at heart.

In 2010, Gardens & Villa traveled to Oregon to record their debut with visionary, vibemaster and labelmate Richard Swift. Together, they put some sand in the sheets of new wave (Black Hills) and pop some translucent funk (Orange Blossom). Theres also a level of effortless class maintained across the whole set. Each and every lush little gem explores the wonderful mystery between intuition and proficiency, between tension and repose. Gardens & Villa are Chris Lynch, Adam Rasmussen, Levi Hayden, Shane McKillop and Dusty Ineman.

    Museum of Love

"Combining arty atmosphere and patient pacing with a
sound that harkens back to the days when live disco was
giving way to house beats, their sound is both blissful and
    brainy." - SPIN

"Museum of Love moves at a stately pace here, offering a
slow and steady chugger that wraps itself in gauzy vocal
layers and takes its sweet time reaching its climactic
    peak."- Pitchfork

Museum of Love is the musical project of Pat Mahoney
(Founding member of LCD Soundsystem) and Dennis
    McNany (Jee Day).

Longtime friends in New York, McNany and Mahoney
found a similar sensibility and a shared vocabulary for
interpreting surroundings, something that began with their
remix of Battles' "My Machines feat. Gary Numan" and
extended into their creation of a full length record together.
Naming their duo in ode to Daniel Johnston's song of the
same named, Mahoney divulges, "I had always loved the
song, and had been thinking of what such an edifice would
contain when we were trying to name the project." McNany
continues, "Pat's a sculptor, I'm a painter, we make music
and museums are sacred spaces and love is an elusive
    thing."

McNany did most of the songwriting as well as production
and instrumentation, while Mahoney is on vocals and
of course, drums, but Museum of Love was an entirely
collaborative process as the two edited and arranged
tracks in the studio. Mahoney says the process of
collaboration was energizing, while McNany simply
explains, "making the record was pure pleasure. Waiting
for it to come out has been the hardest thing."

    Ultima II Massage

    TOBACCO can't have nice things.

On his third album, the Pennsylvania snake-synth-charmer deepens his approach
to aural depravity. Ultima II Massage widens a jagged swath through the dude's
own weird catalog, each disparate track damaged to the point of contributing to
some sort of greater, lurching Frankenstein-like state. "I spent a lot of time
breaking it in all the right places," says TOBACCO. "It ends up making the whole
thing breathe - sometimes gasp for air. It feels more alive." Immediately after
nishing 2010's Maniac Meat, he went to work on the beat-addled series begun
with Fucked Up Friends in 2008. There were notable breaks en route to now - a
surprising commission to remix White Zombie's "Thunder Kiss '65," a new BMSR
record (Cobra Juicy), and producing Demon Queen's Exorcise Tape with vocalist
Zackey Force Funk - but he saved the worst for last, amassing the most
misanthropic material for Ultima. To wit, SPIN dubbed early share "Lipstick
Destroyer" a "junkyard takedown of Daft Punk's beloved, pristine electro."
TOBACCO explains his modied approach: "I wanted to push each song just
enough, so that even when the album's at its wildest, it's something you can zone
out to. It feels like a denitive end to a concept I've been trying to perfect forever.
Maniac Meat was linear. This time I wanted to do a lot of di!erent things and have
them come together as one meditative piece. At least for myself."

Which, oddly enough, makes sense. This is easily TOBACCO's most diverse set to
date - his own Stereopathetic Soulmanure, but about that 1-900 hotline life:
massage parlors, plasticized sleaze, fake tans, old dial-ups to the fan clubs of
dead B-actors. Fittingly, the album's only contributor is Beck music director Brian
LeBarton who shrieks as Notrabel on the grimy freak-out "Streaker." At 17 tracks,
Ultima is stacked with beautifully perverse hits - from the sickly sticky "Eruption,"
to the wobbly demon swaggerer "Face Breakout," to the distorted punk spazz of
"Dipsmack," to the apocalyptic sepia ambience of "Spitlord." You may hear
disembodied bits of Boards of Canada, early Def Jam records, and Gary Numan,
or maybe just public-access TV and bad VHS dubs of '80s horror icks. Or the sun
exploding and everything you've ever loved melting. Again, TOBACCO was just
    trying to make meditation music.

But to nd that rotted sweet spot, as always, he had to subvert his pop urges.
TOBACCO went back to the cassette decks he started o! with - analog weapons
of distortion to compliment his hissing vocoder and blown rhythms. Any moment
that felt "just right" was brutally assaulted until ugly again. All to accomplish one
end: "This might be my most purposely difcult album yet, but I promise if you let
it in, it can fuck you up."

Ultima II Massage. No happy ending.

    Imps of Perversion

Imps of Perversion, Pop. 1280's second full-length for Sacred Bones, finds the four-piece shaking off the hangover that was their critically acclaimed LP The Horror, and diving back down into the basement to enjoy the depravity.

Recorded at Bc Studio with legendary producer Martin Bisi (Sonic Youth, Cop Shoot Cop, Swans), Pop. 1280 have created their most cohesive and powerful statement to date. Woven together with stories of lust, sexual confusion, temptation, and debauchery, Imps forms a tight web of manic synth-punk, bad-trip acid jams and bludgeoning industrial beats.  This is the sound of a band having fun and pushing the limits of their brand of industrial-punk with tighter songwriting and more dynamic musicianship.

On Imps of Perversion, Gary Numan-esque analog synths bubble across acrid, blistering guitars, driving bass lines and crushing rhythms.  From the opening noise-rock blast of "Lights Out" to the industrial groove of "Human Probe II" through to the synth-punk ripper "Do the Anglerfish," this new album is a celebration of making bad decisions again and again. Pop. 1280 knows the party's going to have to end, but they're going to get their kicks before the drones lock in for the finale.
