"This may be Freddie Hubbard's finest moment as
a leader, in that it embodies and utilizes all of his
strengths as a composer, soloist, and frontman. on
red Clay, Hubbard combines hard bop's glorious
blues-out past with the soulful innovations of
mainstream jazz in the 1960s, and reads them through
the chunky groove innovations of 1970s jazz fusion.
This session places the trumpeter in the company
of giants such as tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson,
pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist ron Carter, and
drummer lenny White. Hubbard's five compositions all
come from deep inside blues territory; these shaded
notions are grafted onto funky hard bop melodies
worthy of Horace silver's finest tunes, and are layered
inside the smoothed-over cadences of shimmering,
steaming soul. This is a classic, hands down."

Pressed on 180 Gram Audiophile-Grade Vinyl at Pallas Group in Germany

Mastered from Original Analog Tapes by Bernie Grundman

    Features Herbie Hancock on Rhodes

Freddie Hubbard entered Creed Taylor's studio for the
third time in 1971 with the express purpose of making
a record radically different from anything he'd cut
before; he was looking for it to use electricity and to be
out of the soul-jazz mold, but was also more ambitious
and wanted to push that envelope and himself. Taylor
and Hubbard assembled a band that included Herbie
Hancock , Eric Gale, George Benson, Ron Carter,
Jack DeJohnette, Airto Moreira, and Richard Wyands.
The album is part of a loose trilogy including his two
previous records, Red Clay and Straight Life. Now
available in its essential form, First Light was mastered
from original analog tapes and pressed on 180gram
    audiophile-grade vinyl at Pallas.

    Hub-Tones

Already the most formidable new trumpeter in jazz in 1962, Freddie Hubbard came into his own as a composer with this album with great originals that range from the complex, ferocious swinger Hub-Tones to his poignant Lament For Booker, written for the later Booker Little. James Spaulding, Herbie Hancock, Reggie Workman and Clifford Jarvis are all at their peak, bringing the brilliant music to life with artistry and feeling.

    Sweet Honey Bee

Pianist/composer Duke Pearson leads an all-star group on this run-through of seven of his compositions. The musicians (trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, altoist James Spaulding, Joe Henderson on tenor, bassist Ron Carter, drummer Mickey Roker, and the pianist/leader) are actually more impressive than many of the compositions, although the swinging minor-toned Big Bertha deserved to become a standard. The frameworks are quite intelligent (and everyone doesn't solo on each selection), and the improvisations are concise and clearly related to each tune's melody and mood.

    A Soul Experiment

A Soul Experiment is the fourteenth album by trumpeter Freddie Hubbard recorded between 1968/1969 and released in 1969. It was his third release on the Atlantic label and features performances by Hubbard, Carlos Garnett on tenor sax, Kenny Barron on piano, Gary Illingworth plays the organ, Billy Butler & Eric Gale on guitar, Jerry Jemmott on bass, and Grady Tate & Bernard Purdie on drums.

A Soul Experiment finds Hubbard aiming for 1969 commercial radio acceptance with shorter songs, and a stab at Jimmy Webb's Wichita Lineman.

    Backlash (Speakers Corner)

After his great success as a new discovery through playing on tour and in the studio with Art Blakey's creative and inspirational group, the Jazz Messengers, Freddie Hubbard made a dozen LPs over 16 years for Blue Note and Impulse under his own direction.
It was no wonder then that a big record company made him a lucrative offer in autumn 1966. All in all, Atlantic Records released six LPs and the very first, entitled Backlash, is still until today the best of the bunch.

Three numbers by Freddie Hubbard, one by Bob Cunningham, and two by friends, provide the basis for a successful transition between hard bop and soul beat. Hubbard made high demands on his fellow musicians James Spaulding, Albert Dailey and especially the bass player Bob Cunningham and the drummer Ray Appleton because they had to cope with the ever-changing beat. Right from the very first note, it is obvious that Freddie Hubbard had Fats Navarro and Clifford Brown in his heart and fingers. All the titles are excellent. Of special note, however, is Little Sunflower. The sound colouring of the flute harmonizes particularly well with Hubbard's brass, and Ray Barretto's contribution is more than mere decoration. You're certainly on the right track with this LP, no matter whether it's the beginning of a Freddie Hubbard collection or a further contribution to a large jazz collection.

This Speakers Corner LP was remastered using pure analogue components only, from the master tapes through to the cutting head. All royalties and mechanical rights have been paid.

    Musicians:

    • Freddie Hubbard (fluegel horn, trumpet)
    • James Spaulding (alto saxophone, flute)
    • Albert Dailey (piano)
    • Bob Cunningham (bass)
    • Ray Appleton (drums)
    • Ray Barretto (percussion)

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

This is certainly one of McCoy Tyner's more obscure releases. The great pianist and
his regular trio (with bassist Avery Sharpe and drummer Aaron Scott) is joined by

    Straight Life (Pure Pleasure)

Recorded between trumpeter Freddie Hubbard's better-known classics Red Clay and First Light, Straight Life is actually arguably Hubbard's greatest recording. Hubbard, joined by an all-star group that includes tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, keyboardist Herbie Hancock, guitarist George Benson, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Jack DeJohnette, is frequently astounding on Straight Life (check out that introduction) and Mr. Clean, constructing classic solos. The very memorable set is rounded off by the trumpeter's duet with Benson on a lyrical version of the ballad Here's That Rainy Day. This exciting album is essential for all serious jazz collections.

    Blow-Up Soundtrack (On Sale)

Blow-Up is a soundtrack album by Herbie Hancock featuring music composed for Michelangelo Antonioni's cult film Blow-Up, released in 1966. Musically the songs evoke the ambience of swinging Sixties' London with grooves that create effective bluesy Jazz moods on the slow pieces, and funky ones on the up-tempo tracks.

The album features performances by Hancock on keys, Freddie Hubbard and Joe Newman on trumpet, Phil Woods and Joe Henderson on sax, Ron Carter on bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums. Rumours go that either the fabled Jimmy Smith or Paul Griffin played the Hammond organ on this record.

Rock fans remember the film and the soundtrack for the inclusion of a rare Yardbirds number, Stroll On (actually, an adaptation of Tiny Bradshaw's The Train Kept A-Rollin'), one of only three songs they recorded with both Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page on guitars. The bassline to Bring Down The Birds was sampled by Deee-Lite for their 1990 hit single Groove Is In The Heart featuring Bootsy Collins.

Maiden Voyage is the fifth album led by jazz musician Herbie Hancock, and was recorded by Rudy Van Gelder on May 17, 1965 for Blue Note Records. It was issued as BLP 4195 and BST 84195. It is a concept album aimed at creating an oceanic atmosphere. Many of the song titles refer to marine biology or the sea, and the musicians develop the concept through their use of space and almost tidal dynamics. Art Blakey was one of the greatest of all jazz drummers, a masterful talent scout and the inspiring leader of the Jazz Messengers. For 35 years (1955-90), the Jazz Messengers featured brilliant young talent who were pushed by Blakey to write new music and play at their very best. One certainly could not coast with Blakey's explosive drumming constantly egging on the players. The who's who of jazz passed through Blakey's band for several generations, with everyone from Freddie Hubbard and Wynton Marsalis to Benny Golson and Horace Silver benefiting from the hard-swinging experience. But few lineups could compete with the 1960 edition of the Jazz Messengers featured on The Big Beat. Blakey, the old man of the band at 30, is joined by bassist Jymie Merritt and three brilliant stylists who were not only exciting soloists but very skilled songwriters: trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor-saxophonist Wayne Shorter and pianist Bobby Timmons. The Big Beat introduces Timmons' Dat Dere (which practically defines soul jazz) and Shorter's Lester Left Town (a tribute to Lester Young) and includes an inventive version of It's Only A Paper Moon along with a few other lesser-known but colorful pieces. This is hard bop at its finest from one of the most immortal jazz groups of all time.

Hubbard says in the albums original liner notes: I tried to get that dark sound... which characterizes much of the rest of the music in the album. irretrievably intertwined. Billie Holiday's valedictory
rumination Lady Sings the Blues, Jimmy Smith's epochal funk
throwdown Back at the Chicken Shack, Tony Bennett's Carnegie
Hall debut - Kenny Burrell played guitar for them all. Even Jimi
Hendrix once remarked, Kenny Burrell - that's the sound I'm
looking for. Here is Burrell captured live at the West-Coast jazz
mecca, Catalina's, in an easy-going program of some of his
most-requested tunes along with a few of his personal favorites
thrown in. Jazz tunes by Benny Golson, Freddie Hubbard, the
Duke and others are here all given the ever-tasteful Burrell
    treatment.
