    Volume Two

The first two albums by England's legendary Soft Machine, originally released in 1968 and 1969, remain among the most innovative and influential releases of that musically fertile era. These seminal LPs offered a visionary psychedelic-progressive-jazz-rock mix that helped to make the Soft Machine one of Britain's first significant underground bands, as well as a key force in the birth of both progressive rock and jazz-rock.

A product of the same fabled Canterbury scene that spawned such beloved cult acts as Caravan and Hatfield and the North, the Soft Machine was the rare art-rock combo whose members possessed the instrumental skills to execute their ambitious musical ideas, as well as a playful sense of humor that balanced the band's complex compositions and adventurous improvisations. By the time they began making albums, the Soft Machine was already a sensation in the budding U.K. rock underground, thanks to their now-legendary performances at such fabled London clubs as the UFO, the Speakeasy and Middle Earth, where they shared stages with the likes of Pink Floyd and Tomorrow.

The aptly titled Volume Two introduced a retooled Soft Machine lineup, with Wyatt and Ratledge joined by bassist Hugh Hopper, an old Canterbury friend who had guested on the first album. The sophomore disc finds the threesome moving towards a more explicitly jazz-influenced sound, with an increased emphasis on instrumental material. The album is bookended by a pair of extended compositions, Rivmic Melodies and Esther's Nose Job, which are broken up into shorter individual tracks bearing whimsically arbitrary titles. That approach was suggested to the band by Frank Zappa, whose Mothers of Invention album Absolutely Free was reportedly an influence on Volume Two.

This landmark vinyl gem has been out of print for decades, but now it is back in this meticulously packaged Sundazed edition. Mastered from the original analog tapes and pressed on pristine high-definition vinyl, this lovingly restored vintage gem sounds as powerful and imaginative as ever.

    Over-Nite Sensation

Mastered from the Original Analog Master Tapes at Bernie Grundman Mastering by Chris Bellman

Love it or hate it, Over-Nite Sensation was a watershed album for Frank Zappa, the point where his post-'60s aesthetic was truly established; it became his second gold album, and most of these songs became staples of his live shows for years to come. Whereas the Flo and Eddie years were dominated by rambling, off-color comedy routines, Over-Nite Sensation tightened up the song structures and tucked sexual and social humor into melodic, technically accomplished heavy guitar rock with jazzy chord changes and funky rhythms; meanwhile, Zappa's growling new post-accident voice takes over the storytelling. While the music is some of Zappa's most accessible, the apparent callousness and/or stunning sexual explicitness of Camarillo Brillo, Dirty Love, and especially Dinah-Moe Humm leave him on shaky aesthetic ground.

Zappa often protested that the charges of misogyny leveled at such material missed out on the implicit satire of male stupidity, and also confirmed intellectuals' self-conscious reticence about indulging in dumb fun; however, the glee in his voice as he spins his adolescent fantasies can undermine his point. Indeed, that enjoyment, also evident in the silly wordplay, suggests that Zappa is throwing his juvenile crassness in the face of critical expectation, asserting his right to follow his muse even if it leads him into blatant stupidity (ironic or otherwise). One can read this motif into the absurd shaggy-dog story of a dental floss rancher in Montana, the album's indisputable highlight, which features amazing, uncredited vocal backing from Tina Turner and the Ikettes. As with much of Zappa's best '70s and '80s material, Over-Nite Sensation could be perceived as ideologically problematic (if you haven't got the constitution for FZ's humor), but musically, it's terrific. -Steve Huey

Head is The Monkees audacious soundtrack to the 1968 psychedelic comedy/adventure film of the same name written and produced by Bob Rafelson and Jack Nicholson. The Frank Zappa-esque affair intersperses six proper songs with incidental music from Ken Thorne, dialogue fragments and odd sound effects, resulting in some of the most ambitious and rewarding material of the Monkees musical career.

Live Zappa Broadcast Recorded In Rotterdam 1980

By 1980 Frank Zappa had endured one of the most turbulent periods of his career. The working relationship between Zappa and his long-time manager Herb Cohen had irreparably broken down due to disagreements over their jointly owned DiscReet label, and he had also parted ways with Warner Brothers after a dispute concerning the four disc LÄther project, and the label releasing his material against his wishes, which had resulted in multiple lawsuits.

Blocked from issuing his own music for over a year, Zappa's main source of income came from extensive touring which he did with a number of small, rock-oriented groups throughout the late 1970s.

Included here too as bonus cuts are a selection of tracks from the same tour - broadcast from Paris and Munich respectively - as well as an extended 1980 interview with Mike Siegel for Boston TV show 'Five All Night, Live All Night', in which a typically sarcastic yet droll Zappa answers questions from the host and the viewers about his family life, his recent legal troubles, and his latest releases. Making in completion a full 160-minute recording across two installments, in quite excellent audio quality throughout, this release will prove a delight for fans and a must have item to add to any decent Zappa collection.

Newly Remastered From The Original Master Tapes By Bill Inglot

The list of '60s and '70s singer-songwriters is long and full of legends; but perhaps the most talented of that very talented bunch was Tim Buckley. Certainly when it came to singing Buckley was at the very top; his range was unmatched, capable of covering several octaves and acres of emotion in one breath, from sweet, tenor tenderness to hoarse, cracking anguish. And his songwriting showed a similar wide range; in the course of eight short years Buckley went from baroque, psychedelic folk rock to jazzy, even avant-garde ravings to blue-eyed soul.

This extreme eclecticism, of course, worked against Buckley commercially; by the time his fans caught up to his latest stylistic change he was off on another. But it's also one of the reasons why his reputation has steadily grown in the years since his untimely death in 1975; countless listeners only familiar with his early Elektra albums have found themselves floored by his later output. Which is where we find ourselves with 1974's Look at the Fool, the last record Buckley released during his lifetime and one of the most controversial albums of his career. Long-time fans decried this records as a sellout, and indeed its soft '70s funk feel is jarring to those used to his more adventurous work. But Buckley proves himself to be one helluva R&B singer on this album, which deserved a much larger audience than they got (by this time Buckley was on Frank Zappa and Herb Cohen's label DiscReet).

Now, Real Gone Music is proud to present Look at the Fool on vinyl for the first time since the late '80s, in a version newly remastered from the original master tapes by Bill Inglot. This release marks a significant upgrade in sound from what's heretofore been available, and to celebrate, we're offering this record in audiophile 180-gram vinyl limited to 400 copies. It's high time this album was reappraised; this vinyl release displays it at its very best!

It Comes To You In A Plain Brown Wrapper

One of the most exciting aspects of reintroducing so much rare and incredible music to the world is being able to finally make available material thats been in label-vault limbo since the day it was recorded, vital sounds locked away from the deserving ears of the legions of devoted music fans we at Sundazed count ourselves among. But when were able to present previously shelved material by one of the most visionary and influential artists of all time, in exceptional fidelity, with the look and feel of the packaging that the artist originally meant it to have? Well, then, that just takes everything to another level completelya level thats certainly been reached with the exclusive vinyl-only issue of Captain Beefheart and His Magic Bands mind-blowing lost 1967 sessions.

Recorded in part as the follow-up to Safe as Milk, Beefhearts debut from earlier that year, the world-shattering material on It Comes to You in a Plain Brown Wrapper was rerecorded, truncated, and issuedwithout the Captains approvalas Strictly Personal in 1968. Mastered directly from the original analog tapes and featuring a wealth of unedited takes never before on vinyl, Sundazeds stunning gatefold double-LP release of this infamously enigmatic opus comes to you wrapped in a sharp outer sleeve bearing specially commissioned artwork by Frank Zappa/Straight Records illustrator Cal Schenkel replicating the albums planned 67 design; inside are rare photos and fascinating, exhaustive liner notes by Magic Band drummer John Drumbo French.

So here, then, is Captain Beefheart and His Magic Bands second album of gloriously disjointed avant-rock/blues and free-jazz skronk, presented just as natureand the Captainintended. Even after more than 40 years, this music is still hopelessly ahead of its timeor, as one-time Magic Band member Ry Cooder once described it, right on time.

    Sheik Yerbouti

In order to finance his artier excursions, which increasingly required more expensive technology, Frank Zappa recorded several collections of guitar- and song-oriented material in the late '70s and early '80s, which generally concentrated on the bawdy lyrical themes many fans had come to expect and enjoy in concert. Sheik Yerbouti was one of the first and most successful of these albums, garnering attention for such tracks as the Grammy-nominated disco satire Dancin' Fool, the controversial Jewish Princess, and the equally controversial Bobby Brown Goes Down, a song about gay S&M that became a substantial hit in European clubs.

While Zappa's attitude on the latter two tracks was even more politically incorrect than usual for him, it didn't stop the album from becoming his second-highest charting ever. Social satire, leering sexual preoccupations, and tight, melodic songs dominated the rest of the record as well, as Zappa stuck to what had been commercially successful for him in the past.

    Freak Out!

    180 Gram Vinyl Double LP!

Mastered by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering!

Ranked 246/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Freak Out! is the debut album by American band The Mothers of Invention, released June 27, 1966 on Verve Records. Often cited as one of rock music's first concept albums, the album is a satirical expression of frontman Frank Zappa's perception of American pop culture. It was also one of the earliest double albums in rock music (although Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde preceded it by a week), and the first 2-record debut.

Mothers Of Invention changed from an R&B covers band to performing Zappa's original material when he joined the group. Freak Out! contains a range of musical styles from R&B, doo wop, and blues-influenced rock to orchestral arrangements and avant-garde sounds.

    Diddy Wah Diddy

    Double 7 Set

In the high desert of California, they were referred to simply as "Beefheart."

Don Van Vliet acquired the habit of singing along to vintage blues records while hanging with high school chum Frank Zappa. Founder Alex Snouffer formed the Magic Band in late 1964. And, by early 1965, the powerful and charismatic local blues combo had made quite a name for itself locally as "the band" for local dances at the fairgrounds. By late '65 the inclusion of master guitarist Rich Hepner explosively changed the group's chemistry; dances morphed to concerts - with the dancers choosing to sit on the floor, captivated by this white blues band that seemed to transform Exposition Hall into a spellbinding Louisiana swamp.

In early 1966, the band signed with A&M Records. Producer David Gates (of Bread fame) was assigned production duties, and the first result - a cover of Bo Diddley's "Diddy Wah Diddy" - stunned everyone. Famed Del Rio, Texas DJ "Wolfman Jack" introduced it by saying "OK everybody on the highway, you'd better pull over, cause here comes Captain Beefheart with 'Diddy Wah Diddy.'"

Ill-fated times intervened with the coincidental cover of "Diddy" by an East Coast group - The Remains - which was releases almost simultaneously on the Epic Records label. Confusion and chaos reigned, and the songs dropped from the charts quickly. Founder Snouffer reflected: That's a record label's, personal manager's, and band's nightmare." Undaunted, Gates penned a follow-up to "Diddy," entitled "Moonchild." The band arranged it themselves - interpreting Dave's guitar/voice demo. Gates reaction: "Boy, it wasn't supposed to happen like this!"

Van Vliet had also penned his first recorded compositions - "Who Do You Think You're Fooling" for the B-side of "Diddy" and "Frying Pan" for the B-side of "Moonchild." Van Vliet went on in later years through many incarnations of Magic Bands to create the most avante-garde rock music ever recorded, but the roots of these early pieces echo throughout all the later works.

    Joe's Garage

One of the most iconic and infamous titles in FZ's entire catalog, Joe's Garage, has gone down in history as one of Frank Zappa's greatest works. This 1979 epic in three acts, on three discs, predicted the future of censorship, self described by FZ as: A stupid little story about how the government is going to do away with music.

    Hot Rats

By 1969, after releasing a 'mother lode' of Mothers of Invention classics, leader Frank Zappa was ready to breakthrough other musical barriers that were still holding popular music in a conservative headlock.

Being one if not the first album to be recorded using 16 tracks (twice the number being used at the time on both sides of the Atlantic), Hot Rats became a leading edge in both modern recording technology and the evolution of jazz/rock-fusion. Mostly instrumental, it features six original compositions; three loose jam pieces, the remainder being tight ensemble arrangements. Some of the finest players around come together in varying combinations, all-the-while showcasing Frank Zappa's guitar virtuosity.

Among others, Lowell George of Little Feat-fame lends guitar, jazz violinists extraordinaire Don 'Sugarcane' Harris and Jean-Luc Ponty plus fellow Mother Ian Underwood's keyboard and woodwind work, complete the leader's advanced vision. Last but not least, the legendary Captain Beefheart brings his unique pipes to the infamous Willie The Pimp.

Soon to become a concert staple and fan favorite thereafter, Peaches En Regalia is truly a modern jazz standard, eventually covered by the likes of Phish and The Dixie Dregs. Also included are Son of Mr. Green Genes, Little Umbrellas, The Gumbo Variations and It Must Be A Camel. Mastered and cut directly from the original analog master tape by Bernie Grundman under the supervision of Gail Zappa.

Zappa hit the road in September '81, with his latest touring band, comprising Chad Wackerman on drums, Ed Mann on percussion, Tommy Mars on keyboards, Scott Thunes on bass, with Steve Vai and Ray White on guitar. In November the group travelled to New York State, played a couple of shows up north before hitting the city and unloading at the infamous Ritz venue in the East Village on the 17th.

The show that night was captured by WLIR FM Radio and broadcast across the East Coast to the delight of Zappa fans who hadn't been lucky enough to secure a ticket. Playing for more than two and a half hours, with special guests Al Di Meola and Brian Peters joining on a couple of numbers.

    Muffin Man Vol 2

Of all the Frank Zappa tours, the spring of 1975 is the most unusual and frustrating. The performances could range from absolutely exhilarating to rather drab with slopping renditions of composed "core" pieces like "Advance Romance" and "Willie The Pimp" played in the midst of brilliant improvisations by both Zappa and Captain Beefheart and the other musicians in the band. Add to this the paucity of really good recordings, and the frustration is obvious. Zappa's April 26th show in Providence had never circulated before Lampinski's tape surfaced recently. Not only is this arguably the best sounding show from the tour, it's a tight and enjoyable performance. This is the second instalment of two from that ground breaking performance.

    Roxy & Elsewhere

This mostly live set features Zappa performing with the popular Mothers of Invention line-up of the early 70's--including jazz-funk meister George Duke, Napolean Murphy Brock on saxophone, and Ruth Underwood on percussion. Highlights include the souped-up funk of Pygmy Twylyte, burning renditions of favorites Penguin in Bondage and More Trouble Every Day, and the hilarious monster movie tribute Cheepnis. Duke steals the show on several tracks, and Zappa's guitar work and master of ceremonies showmanship is in top form. -Andrew Boscardin
