    Liege And Lief

Vinyl LP repressing of this classic 1969 album by the British Folk legends. LIEGE & LIEF was the fourth album by Fairport Convention. It was the third and final album the group released in the UK in 1969, all of which prominently feature Sandy Denny as lead female vocalist. Although Denny quit the band even before the album's release, Fairport Convention has continued to the present day to make music almost exclusively within the traditional British Folk idiom, and are still one of the artists most strongly associated with it.

    Folk Songs

When Nonesuch Records celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2014, with festivals at London's Barbican Centre and New York's Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), Kronos Quartet joined forces with four labelmates-Sam Amidon, Olivia Chaney, Rhiannon Giddens, and Natalie Merchant-to perform a concert entitled Folk Songs. The group later recorded the songs, most of which are traditional with contemporary arrangements, with Doug Petty as the album's producer.

Don't Press Your Luck! The In Sound Of 60's Connecticut

Connecticut had a solid garage rock scene in the mid-'60s, and more than a few of the best bands in the region logged time at Wallingford's Trod Nossel Studios (aka Syncron Sound), a recording facility run by Thomas Doc Cavalier, truly an unlikely champion of local rock & roll. Cavalier was a successful dentist who gave up his practice to manage New England rockers the Bram Rigg Set and the Shags (not to be confused with the infamous Wiggin sisters), and when Syncron Sound (where both bands had recorded) fell on hard times, he bought the studio, changed the name, and turned it into a profitable business that's still running today.

Don't Press Your Luck! collects material from a handful of New England acts who recorded at Trod Nossel and were overseen by Cavalier, and there's little arguing that the folks at the studio knew their stuff -- compared to many compilations of '60s garage rarities, these tracks sound lively and robust, crackling with teenage energy but recorded with a skill that didn't blunt the enthusiasm of the musicians. (Bob Irwin's superb remastering is also to be commended.) And the music is pretty great, too -- the Wildweeds' classic No Good to Cry (featuring a pre-NRBQ Al Anderson) is the standout here, but there's also some moody beat stuff from the Shags (Don't Press Your Luck, Hide Away), fuzztone-powered angst from the Bram Rigg Set (Sleepless Nights, You Don't Love Me, and a potent cover of Them's I Can Only Give You Everything), and intriguing weirdness from the misanthropic Fourth Ryke (Please Leave, You're Cutting Out).

While you'd expect high goofiness from a group called Uranus and the Five Moons, their material is actually smart and adventurous (Nothing Remains, SSS Happenin' Here). Some radio spots recorded at Trod Nossel also make the cut, as does a demonstration of the wonders of multi-track recorded based around a session by the Shags. Garage fanatics and folks with a taste for Connecticut history will both find this set to be well worth investigating.

These solemn hymns, spirituals and folk songs performed by bassist Charlie Haden and pianist Hank Jones were recorded at Radio Canada Studio B in Montreal, Canada June 29 & 30, 1994.

...Bassist Charlie Haden and pianist Hank Jones perform a variety of spirituals, hymns and folk songs as duets. The traditional music (which includes such tunes as 'Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen,' 'Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,' 'Sometimes I Feel like a Motherless Child' and 'We Shall Overcome') are all performed respectfully and with reverence. These melodic yet subtly swinging interpretations hold one's interest throughout and reward repeated listenings.

    A Folk Set Apart

Cass McCombs' new anthology, A Folk Set Apart, is subtitled "Rarities, B-Sides & Space
Junk, Etc." which is, on the surface, true but it's so much more than that. It's an alternate
retelling of the last decade and a half of an enigmatic career built on immaculate
songwriting but short on "breakthrough success." While it contains none of McCombs'
better known songs from his seven full-lengths, he would have you believe this is his favorite
    album.

The compilation starts off with the very first song to be released by McCombs, "I Cannot
Lie" and, as is the case with many of McCombs gems, is told in the first person. Often, the
temptation is to assume the autobiographical with McCombs and long-time fans surely have
formed some mental picture of the elusive musician, but to do so would be to proceed at
your own risk. McCombs knows his mythology is littered with misdirects, rumors and half
truths and quite frankly none of our business.

And McCombs is right, actually. In spite of its compilation status, nineteen tracks in all . This very well
may be the most compelling album he's released, not because the original albums are
lacking in their own charms, but there is something fascinating in the sprawl: chugging lo-fi,
downtrodden gems, rambling rave-ups, political anthems, lysergic outtakes, wistful laments
and an appropriate bookend on our own decade-long professional relationship with one of
the greatest songwriters of the 21st Century. Fare thee well, Cass.

For the past 30 years, Lucinda Williams has channeled her perspective as a proud but vulnerable Southern female into a string of stellar albums, each of which weave Rock, Country, Folk and Blues so tightly that each of the elements seems to disappear. Lucinda Williams (1988) was her breakthrough disc, but her magnum opus, 1998's Car Wheels On A Gravel Road, sealed her reputation as a formidable singer-songwriter.

It took three torturous years to finish this alt-country masterwork, but it was worth it. Williams writes songs that explore the rootlessness of American life, with vivid imagery and gravel-guitar beauty. The album features guest appearances by Steve Earl, Emmylou Harris and Buddy Miller. Williams co-produced the album and it was mixed by Rick Rubin & Jim Scott except Metal Firecracker, which was mixed by Ray Kennedy.

The album won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album, and was Lucinda Williams' first album to go Gold. It was voted Best Album of the Year in the Village Voice Pazz & Jop critics poll. In 2003, the album was ranked number 304 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

Shirley Collin's 1974 album Adieu To Old England finds the influential British folksinger interpreting a 15-song set of traditional English folk songs arranged by her sister Dolly Collins. In The Club

Dave Swarbrick and Simon Nicol are hugely important figures in the history of British Folk Rock and Folk music since the 1960's. They were both key figures in British Folk Rock super group Fairport Convention and appeared on their seminal album Liege and Lief (1969) which initiated the electric folk movement. In fact BBC radio 2 listeners have voted Liege and Leaf the 'Most influential folk album of all time'.

Dave Swarbrick has been described the most influential British fiddle player bar none. After 1970 he emerged as Fairport Convention's leading figure and guided the band through a series of important albums until its disbandment in 1979. Simon Nicol was a founder member of Fairport Convention and is the only founding member still in the band... In 1973 he played on what is often considered one of the important folk/jazz albums of all time, John Martyn's Solid Air.

After Fairport Convention called it a day in 1979, Dave Swarbrick and Simon Nicol joined forces and spent the early eighties playing folk clubs throughout the UK as an acoustic duo. Their repertoire was drawn from various sources - including Fairport Convention material, Dave Swarbrick's late seventies/early eighties solo albums and also several tracks that were individual to the duo. The acoustic duo proved popular and recorded three albums. Two of those, the 1981 live album 'Live at the White Bear', and the 1984 studio effort 'Close to the Wind', were re-issued a few years back on Fairport Convention's own Woodworm Records label.

    Incredible String Band

If any musical combo ever meshed perfectly with the times it was the Incredible String Band. And here's the proof: their 1966 debut, The Incredible String Band on deep-grooved, 180-gram vinyl. The wildly eclectic Scottish folk outfit -with the airy vocals and
fretboard prowess of Robin Williamson and Mike Heron as its two constants -began life resurrecting wondrous and ancient Celtic ballads, then was transformed by the perfumed winds of 1967's psychedelic revolution to add sitar, oud, gimbri and all manner of exotic axes to its arsenal. The result is a gently mesmerizing psychedelia and anti-folk stance-consummate counterpoint to current psych heroes like Mogwai and Beachwood Sparks that makes perfectly clear why the Incredible String Band remains just that: Incredible!

Recorded in 1959, Songs Of Our Soil is a concept album that reflects Johnny Cashs penchant for the American folk ballad, proving himself to be a direct descendant of this great idiom. Here Cash offers almost an entire albums worth of his own compositions (with a few traditionals thrown in for good measure), tackling such classic themes as floods, Indians, miners and drinking. Folk Singer

Ranked 280/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Cut at 45 RPM For The First Time Ever!

From the original 1964 Chess analog masters! Pressed at Quality Record Pressings!

    Mastered by Bernie Grundman.

New Gatefold jacket, with extra photos!

Folk Singer has been an audiophile staple for years. It always gets a bunch of play at hi-fi shows. It's a no-doubter demonstration disc. But never before has it sounded like this! Never has it been cut at 45 RPM!

There are a handful of landmark albums in any genre. In the blues, one of them is Muddy Waters' Folk Singer. Originally released in 1964, Folk Singer was the only acoustic album Waters ever recorded, thus becoming the first and perhaps best blues concept album ever. Muddy of course started out playing acoustic blues in the Delta, and he's clearly very comfortable in this return to his roots, which was designed to appeal to the mid-1960s surge of interest in folk music.

Muddy's supporting cast includes a very young Buddy Guy on guitar, Willie Dixon at the upright bass and Clifton James on drums.

This recording has enormous presence with ample room for Muddy's booming voice to resonate.

Folk Singer has been an audiophile staple for years. It always gets a bunch of play at hi-fi shows. It's a no-doubter demonstration disc. But never before has it sounded like this!

    Sahel Folk

Sidi Toure has been performing music in his home of Mali since the 1970's when he formed the Songhai Stars regional orchestra. He has won the award for best singer two times at the Mali National Bienale. Sidi is a peer to Toumani Diabate, Bassekou Kouyate, and he shares a kinship with the late Ali Farka Toure. At its heart, Sahel Folk, Thrill Jockey's debut release with Sidi Toure, is an album of friends reuniting musically. It's Sidi Toure's second album, but the first time most of his collaborators have been documented.

Chronicled in a live field-recording style at Sidi's sister's house, the simplicity of the takes highlight the beauty of the songs and the skill of the players. Each track on the album is a duet recording of Sidi and one friend, a product of a very specific two-day process. On the first day, the friends would meet, play, and choose a song over a glass of tea. On the second day they would record the song, allowing themselves just two takes to retain the spontaneity of the recording and reunion.

    Folk Roots, New Routes

An extraordinary and classic album originally released by Decca in 1964. A landmark recording bringing together Shirley Collins' haunting vocals and Davy Graham's innovative guitar style. Folk Roots, New Routes was more than just a record when it first came out: it opened many minds and the door for Fairport Convention and Pentangle to walk through in the future.

    Folk Art (Pure Pleasure)

Jazz is essentially an African-American folk art, elements not lost on Joe Lovano as he presents this all-original program of progressive music. His updated quintet Us Five is one of his freshest units in some time, with bassist Esperanza Spalding, the criminally underrated pianist James Weidman, and two stir-the-pot drummers in Francisco Mela and Otis Brown III. Together they fulfill Lovano's vision as a band that is not afraid to take many chances, stay within a bop-based tradition, and cut loose on many levels in terms of adding diverse elements to this mix of music. Lovano is noticeably restless, using his reliable tenor sax, but also straight alto, clarinet, and taragato. The drummers not only play their standard kits, but ethnic percussion instruments from many continents, while Spalding is maturing and growing exponentially into a formidable voice on her instrument. Weidman is simply brilliant throughout, largely ignored since his early days with Abbey Lincoln until now, but there's no reason he should be so underestimated or slighted.

    Musicians:

    • Joe Lovano (saxophone)

    • James Weidman (piano)

    • Esperanza Spaulding (bass)

    • Otis III, Francisco Mela (drums)

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Folk Songs & Instrumentals With Guitar

Folk Songs And Instrumentals With Guitar is the very first album from the late, legendary folk-blues guitarist and singer Elizabeth Cotton. Featuring her oft-covered classic tune, the titular "Freight Train" and her idiosyncratic, self-taught upside-down left-handed guitar playing style, this is an absolutely essential collection from an American folk legend lovingly reissued here on vinyl in an exact replica of the original paste-on Folkways jacket with booklet.

Jazz, Folk Songs, Spirituals, & Blues

Recorded on in 1958 in Los Angeles, CA, Jazz, Folk Songs, Spirituals, & Blues is a rare album by the one-man-band and well-known folk musician Jesse Fuller. Although Fuller always played music on the side, becoming a master of the 12-string guitar (between working for the railroads, lumber companies, or the circus), he did not make his first recording until 1955, when he was already 50 years old. Frustrated by his inability to get a band together, Fuller devised a way to play all the instruments himself, constructing a one-man band system that allowed him to sing and accompany himself on the twelve-string guitar, harmonica, kazoo, cymbals & a homemade instrument he called the "fotdella" (played with the big toe of the right foot which hit pedals causing padded hammers to strike against the instrument's six strings). This brilliant and unique album in the blues arena includes Fuller's rendition of traditional blues numbers like "Take This Hammer" and "Linin' Track" as well as his own compositions like "Fingerbuster" and "99 Years".

Pressed On Plutonium Green Colored Vinyl

A time capsule of atomic-age country, radioactive rockabilly, and other-worldly melodies! Sheldon Allman (the singing voice of Mr. Ed!) brings you this long-out-of-print bunker full of plutonium-charged songs about space and destruction. A true creative treasure, the Chicago born and Canada raised Sheldon Allman was a graduate of the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music.
