Taking their inspiration from early leaders (Discharge, The Exploited, English Dogs) and the metal-edged NYC hardocre of yesteryear, The Casualties new album Resistance, their first new music in almost three years, finds the group at their most metallic, vicious and anthemic. Roforofo FightBy 1972, when Music Of Fela: Roforofo Fight was originally released (on two vinyl albums, Music Of Fela Volume One and Volume Two), Fela was becoming one of the most avidly followed musicians in West Africa. His audience came from among the region's urban poor, the "sufferheads" living in the shanty towns around the major cities, along with growing numbers of students and political dissenters.
Fela championed, and sang about the problems of, oppressed and exploited people and denounced the ruling elites lording it over them, with their seemingly endemic corruption and their ready use of violence to crush dissent - and because he generally sang in Broken English rather than Yoruba, and adopted an increasingly pan-Africanist outlook, his message resonated throughout Anglophone Africa.1. The HostThe Host, producer Barry Lynn's new alias, works in a spacey interzone, using vintage gear to create dramatic panoramas for the headphoned mind. His unique suite of modern impressionistic sonics tumble and waft in and out of the mix, grounded with strong melodies that take inspiration from net-age genres while never recalling them directly.
Throughout this self-titled debut album, vintage synths, drum machines and reverb are exploited to their fullest potential, while guitar and bass explore a sound that sets apart The Host from producers working on computers, creating something much more like an actual band but rich with lively micro-detail.
Opening track "Neo-Geocities" is full of drifting synths and distorted drum-machine toms reminiscent of a jerry-rigged footwork style; "Angel Fire" melts muted guitar and gentle keys into haywire 808 rhythms; "Internet Archaeology" dubs hazy melodies, tape edits and bass guitar into murky but uplifting melodic shapes. "Hidden Ontology" riffs majestically over arpeggiated synths, while "3AM Surfing" and "Summer Solstice at Cape Canaveral" savor the quiet moments after a good night out.
"Rainy Sequences/Phosphene Patterns" is a dense and ecstatic blur of sound, coalescing into a pretty guitar melody weaving through the lush noise, and the pastoral drift of "Aeontology" is best appreciated while horizontal. Closing with the delicate and exquisitely detailed spring mood of the gentle "Birthday Bluebells," The Host introduces a focused and unique artist with a strong debut.1. Neo-Geocities

Balalaika Favorites (Speakers Corner)
The balalaika is not a difficult instrument to describe: it has a triangular body, three strings and a fretted neck. It is far more difficult to describe the inherent values of this national instrument, of which there is a whole family with sizes ranging from the piccolo and alto to the bass and double bass. Accordingly a wide variety of timbral colouring can be achieved, which - together with a broad repertoire - is exploited to the full by a traditional ensemble such as the Osipov Orchestra.
With their performances of arrangements of well-known, romantic Russian pieces, popular adaptations and waltzes, this professional orchestra gives us an insight into the spirited and highly entertaining world of a living musical culture. No different from a classical orchestra, the arrangements are rich in soloistic interludes. Alongside the domra, an instrument with three or four strings, we hear a xylophone, ancient wind instruments and the sonorous, rippling bajan (button accordion). This recording goes back to the roots of Russian music and rightly occupies an important position in our Russian Edition.
Recording: June 1962 in Bolshoi Hall of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory, Moscow, Russia,
by C.R. Fine and Robert Eberenz / Production: Wilma Cozart
About Speakers Corner
At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.
During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.
A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.
We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.
We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.
To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.$34.99180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed Buy Now
Join The DotsThey're back! It's only a little bit more than a year since London's
TOY graced us with their s/t record. Now they Join The Dots with
11 new tracks. TOY have quickly established a sound that is as
modernistic as it is faithful to the spirit of psychedelia of decades
past, marrying sophisticated chord progressions with a cornucopia
of effects, enigmatic lyricism and driving Motorik rhythms.
As with their debut, Join The Dots was recorded mostly live with
Dan Carey at the helm, although increased studio time has enabled
the band to experiment more with Carey's laboratory of effects and
pre-amps, and embellish the tracks with overdubs. The album is
both a companion to and extension of the electric blueprint plotted
out on Toy, filled as it is with increasingly unpredictable, illuminating
sonic ideas and songs that shift and transform with seemingly

Skye & RossFor over a dozen years, Ross and Skye had been playing across the globe as Morcheeba, but Ross' brother, Paul - their co-producer, with whom they'd founded the band - had stayed at home. During this time, the inevitable separation between what happened in the studio and what happened live had become increasingly pronounced, and, as they observed the band beside them with delight, the singer and guitarist shared an epiphany. "Why don't we make our records feel more live?"
The result of this revelation is SKYE | ROSS, an album that pursues its own musical path while returning to the roots of the sound that made Morcheeba a household name back in the late 1990s. It is, Ross explains, "what Skye and I do naturally when you ask us to make music together, and yet not necessarily a continuation of what we'd been doing with Morcheeba. It therefore felt only right to give it a new identity."
What emerged recalls the spirit of Morcheeba's international, platinum selling Big Calm, while boasting a revived spirit and the mature experience that comes with two decades of making music.
Ultimately, SKYE | ROSS doesn't signify the end of Morcheeba, but rather a purge of sorts, an opportunity for the two musicians who have represented the public face of their band to exploit the musical relationship that has developed between them outside of the studio on stages around the world. "Our intentions are really aligned," Ross concludes, "and once you have that synchronicity with someone everything falls into place."1. Repay The Saviour

Every Color Of DarknessIt has been four years since Guillermo S. Herren released
anything significant from his most famous and respected
moniker, Prefuse 73 (though he did keep busy with live
shows, collaborations, and remixes). That's a long time for
virtually any artist, but it's an eternity for Herren, whose first
three Prefuse 73 albums dropped in the span of four years.
As if to make up for lost time, 2015 will see the release of
not one, but three major works from Prefuse 73. After
several albums that saw Herren progressively drift away
from the beatmaking prowess that made him synonymous
with emotionally resonant, damaged hip-hop, he's found
himself reinvigorated - thanks in large part to an emotionally
draining, creatively cashed few years. As Herren puts it, I've
come back to hyper focusing - immersing myself in the
sounds, rhythms, and formations that created Prefuse 73 in
the first place. Recently, I've found a new life in the whole
process of refining what I've created over the years as
"Prefuse". Right now I'm at my most confident and
comfortable since 05/06.
It shows. The conclusion of a triptych of new recordings,
Every Color of Darkness basks in the darkest corners of
Prefuse 73's world, finding an eerie romanticism in manic
beats and damaged jazz. It's a record that showcases his
uncanny ability to excavate and exploit a source of light
buried in pitch black.
For an artist who has played an undeniably integral role in
the careers of so many influential artists - from MF Doom
to Battles to Flying Lotus - it's not just refreshing to hear
him return to top form...it's revelatory.1. Wasted (Intro)

Souvenir Part 1The ensemble TrondheimSolistene was founded in 1988 by Bjarne Fiskum, and was for many years an arena for professional concert training for string-players at the Conservatory in Trondheim. As a result of many concerts throughout Europe as well as concert tours to the United States, Japan and Brazil, the TrondheimSolistene has grown to be an ensemble of international renown, receiving much critical acclaim and attracting attention with its combination of high standards, youthful vigor and lively enthusiasm for the music.
New collaborations have pleased both performers and audiences alike, and the orchestra has been noted for its considerable musical versatility, performing music from the baroque and romantic repertoires as well as tango, jazz, rock and contemporary music. The ensemble is an important advocate of Norwegian music, has commissioned and given premiers of several works and invariably includes Norwegian works in its concert tour programs. TrondheimSolistenes discography includes over twenty recordings. Øyvind Gimse was appointed artistic director of TrondheimSolistene in 2002, continuing the ensembles broad programming profile and musical versatility. TrondheimSolistene collaborates regularly with soloists such as Leif Ove Andsnes, Martin Fröst, Joshua Bell, Ole Edvard Antonsen, Arve Tellefsen and Anne-Sophie Mutter.
Through its dynamic co-operation TrondheimSolistene (the Trondheim Soloists) and 2L has always stretched the boundaries of what is possible to convey to the listener, aiming for the ultimate recorded listening experience. With the Serenade the team has taken things one step further with the TrondheimSolistene truly justifying their name. By placing each individual next to someone from a different voice rather than sitting in conventional sections we are working at the very outer limits of what is possible and creating chamber music at the highest level - Øyvind Gimse, 2012.
2L allocated two weeks in 2011 to record this new album. Artistic director Øyvind Gimse and his associate Geir Inge Lotsberg initially chose two pieces that represent, in their estimation, the most beautiful music ever composed for the string orchestra: Tchaikovsky's Souvenir de Florence and his Serenade for Strings. Aiming for a 90 minute program left 30 more minutes to record. So the orchestra and 2L logged on to Facebook and asked the listeners worldwide what they'd like to hear. And the audience responded: Nielsen's Suite Opus 1. A little gem that would exploit the Trondheim Soloists' singular way with Nordic repertoire.
Inspired by Morten Lindberg's extensive work with choral music, the Tchaikovsky's Serenade was recorded with the ensemble placed in mixed voices, meaning no one is sitting beside anyone playing the same part, creating a totally new soundscape to the music. Carl Nielsen's Suite opus 1 is recorded in a more traditional way in these sessions.1. Tchaikovsky - Souvenir de Florence

Big Band Bossa NovaA byproduct of the bossa nova fad that followed the success of Desafinado (and preceded the famous recording Getz/Gilberto), this set finds Quincy Jones utilizing and exploiting bossa nova rhythms in his arrangements for a big band. The personnel includes flÜgelhornist Clark Terry, altoist Phil Woods, pianist Lalo Schifrin, guitarist Jim Hall, and (on Soul Bossa Nova) the remarkable Rahsaan Roland Kirk. However, since the selections are all quite brief, and some of the charts are a bit cheesy and inappropriate for the gentle rhythms, this disc (although pleasant enough) is of lesser interest.

I Piaceri ProibitiThis is the soundtrack to the documentary I Piaceri Proibiti by Piero Umiliani. Umiliani was born in Florence, Tuscany. Like many of his Italian colleagues at that time, he composed the scores for many exploitation films in the 1960s and 1970s, covering genres such as spaghetti western, Eurospy, and Giallo.
Although not as widely regarded as, for example, Ennio Morricone or Riz Ortolani, he helped form the style of the typical European 1960s and 1970s jazz influenced film soundtrack, that later experienced a revival in films such as Kill Bill and Crepuscolo Sul Mare in Ocean's Twelve.1. Tenor MadnessBy the time this LP was released, Sonny Rollins already had such albums under his name as Worktime (OJCCD-007-2) and Sonny Rollins Plus 4 (OJCCD-243-2), in addition to his sideman exploits with the Clifford Brown/Max Roach Quintet. Tenor Madness, in which he was joined by the rhythm section from the Miles Davis Quintet, further substantiated and underlined his rapidly rising stature. The material is an effective mixture of Rollins' playing attitudes with an intriguing original, Paul's Pal, and the mining of unusual material such as My Reverie and The Most Beautiful Girl in the World. She Was Too Good To MeChet Baker was one of the most important representatives of the West Coast Cool Jazz movement. His heroin addiction is well documented with his exploits and misadventures wrapped in legendary anecdotes, but thankfully his life story never managed to overshadow his unmistakable talent. Chet Baker has one of the most recognisable sounds of all the jazz musicians in the cannon; his trumpet playing is intimate, simple and delicate with a hint of melancholy that tears at the heartstrings. Open The CrownOpen the Crown conveys tendrils of raw energy emanating from the head - dream visions translated directly to audio outrage. Heavy. And sexy. To be expected from Arrington de Dionyso and his molten collection of Malaikat dan Singa who manipulate the "form'd and the formless" to create from within this broken system.
You may have experienced Arrington de Dionyso's Malaikat dan Singa as an unexpected live force, pushing up through the earth like daffodils in late winter; or maybe you're familiar with their previous exploits in the studio, Malaikat dan Singa and Suara Naga, which burn clean with fragrant traumas. Open the Crown is similarly passion-filled, with new vistas (channeled hallucinations) exploring English (previously only the Indonesian language was employed) as their stomping ground to expand parallel themes anew.
The players involved have all been Arrington cohorts in past lives with Malaikat dan Singa and other Dub Narcotic Studio exploits: Ben Kapp (drums), Angelo Spencer (guitar), Mark Morrison (keyboards) and Nehemiah St. Danger (electric bass guitar); tape echo over all. The joy of Open the Crown was captured by Dub Narcotic Studio engineers Ben Hargett (the mix) and Ephriam Nagler (the mastering). It's cosmically pleasing to both ear and dance floor.
Arrington de Dionyso (b. January 4,1975) makes trans-utopian world music for a world that may or may not exists. He traverses the nameless territories between surrealist automatism, shamanic seance, and the folk imagery of rock'n'roll using performance and visual art. He clarified his eccentric brew of ecstatic lunacy and prophetic madness during his 15 year tour-of-duty with Olympia's Old Time Relijun.
De Dionyso's Malaikat dan Singa is a trance-punk outfit featuring bass clarinet, guitars, multiple drummers and his trademark wild vocals (multi-spectral harmonic throat singing combined with grunts, yelps, and barks). "Malaikat dan Singa" translates as "Angels and Lions," and de Dionyso's lyrics (both Indonesian and any other language he chooses to ply) fiercely combine mythology and fantasy. As a band Malaikat dan Singa ultimately defies a clean translation gaining power by crossing boundaries - both linguistic and psychic.1. I Feel the Quickening

His heroin addiction is well documented, his exploits and misadventures are wrapped in legendary anecdotes.
But his life story never managed to overshadow his unmistakable talent.
Chet Baker has one of the most recognizable sounds of all the jazz musicians in the cannon; his trumpet playing is intimate, simple and delicate, with a hint of melancholy that tears at the heartstrings.
Chet Baker With Strings was recorded during three sessions in 1953 with Zoot Sims & Jack Montrose on tenor sax, Russ Freeman on piano, Shelly Manne on drums and Clifford 'Bud' Shank on alto sax.
The players are lifted up into the air like a leaf on the breeze by Montrose's delicate string arrangements, while the Baker and Sims interplay on songs like 'Loved Walked In' are amongst the best recorded in jazz history.
