    Two Vines

Alt-electro pioneers Empire Of The Sun return with their third studio album, Two Vines, set for release via Astralwerks. With Two Vines, the Australian band invites listeners to enter the jungle paradise that marks the third remarkable age of the Empire Of The Sun. Through a waterfall of dreams, beyond the white light of an ice curtain lies a lush, green world where childlike innocence and ancient wisdom are one. The album's first single, "High & Low," offers a glimpse of this dreamlike kingdom.

"We always saw Empire as a movie," says Nicholas Littlemore, the co-pilot with Luke Steele of this fantastic vessel of electro-futurist sound and vision. "The whole concept was based around childhood fantasies; being in bed and staring at the posters on your wall, whether they were monster movies or outlandish rock stars or pieces of art. We always wanted to be one of those posters on a child's wall that had so much imagination locked into it, a kind of invitation that pushes you over the edge into dream world. With this record, it's time to take that next step."

Recorded in Hawaii and Los Angeles, Two Vines is co-produced by Empire Of The Sun and Peter Mayes (Sia, The Killers, Mika), alongside long-term collaborator, Donnie Sloan (Midnight To Monaco). It also sees the creative circle expanding with esteemed pianist/arranger Henry Hey and bassist Tim Lefebvre, from David Bowie's Blackstar band, featured heavily on the album. Factor in Wendy Melvoin from Prince's Revolution, as well as Fleetwood Mac's genius guitarist/vocalist Lindsey Buckingham, and the Empire's rainbow has never been so vast and colorful.

"Going to Hawaii to record was the best idea," says Luke Steele of sessions at Honolulu's Avex Studios - where Kanye West recorded 2010's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. "That was the catalyst for me. I'd spend the morning surfing, then roll in and make music into the night."

    Ice On The Dune

It's exactly what electronic pop should sound like in 2013. Fresh, euphoric, youthful...it more than delivers on the promise of 2008 s million-selling debut Walking On A Dream and the fantastical imagery that made them a festival highlight wherever Steele strapped on his head-dress, said Q, awarding the album four stars in a lead review. MOJO noted, you can t help but be charmed by their puckish, wide-eyed enthusiasm for the redemptive power of pop. Nearly every track is powered by a room-rattling disco groove, observed Uncut, scoring it 8/10. But what makes DNA , Alive , Concert Pitch and the title song so irresistible is the way their silky melodies resolve into super-saturated Technicolor chorus hooks.

Performing the Music of Captain Beefheart

Famously forged in a cauldron of intense artistic pressure, the Magic Band emerged as a group unlike any other in popular music. Under the tenacious tutelage of Don Van Vliet, better known as Captain Beefheart, this strikingly innovative unit took their music to unexplored places, creating a musical language all their own. Throughout the band's chaotic history with Beefheart, drummer John Drumbo French served as the chief translator, deciphering the Captain's often cryptic instructions into a discernable direction for the band. His tireless efforts provided the essential conduit through which Beefheart's multi-hued compositional visions transformed into concrete audio sculptures. In simpler terms, he was the glue.

In response to repeated fan requests, French assembled an all-star cast of Magic Band veterans including Denny Freebo Reelers Walley/guitar, Garry Mantis Lucas/ guitar, Mark Rockette Morton Boston/bass and Michael Traylor/drums and brought them to the U.K. for several concert tours between 2003 and 2006. Freed from the confines of his drum kit, French stepped into the front man role, singing and playing harmonica. Exploring songs from the Magic Band's rich catalog, the group returned to these compositions with fervor, faithfully recreating them while simultaneously adding new sonic colors to the palette. Enraptured audiences across the empire reveled in the revived music, thrilled to hear the long-silent repertoire performed again.

This recording captures an especially memorable performance at the intimate Zodiac club in Oxford, England from June 6, 2005. Riding the momentum of two successful concerts in Portsmouth and Penzance, the group was careful to keep their focus and not become overconfident. That night, surrounded by an enthusiastic audience that included many friends and acquaintances, the band played a transcendent set. As French relates in the album's liner notes, It was on this night when I was able to savor the words and music of Don Van Vliet and in a sense 're-discover' the greatness of the work. I could feel the power of the compositions as they rained down upon the crowd, and I found myself laughing all over again at many of the double-entendres, and euphemisms. How fortunate, then, that tape was rolling on this enchanted evening!

John French personally mixed these eighteen tracks for release, ensuring that the zeitgeist of this special show would be preserved for all time. Sundazed celebrates this prized addition to the Magic Band's discography, bringing it to you on 180 gram vinyl 2LP set for your listening pleasure.

Rage Against the Machine's long-awaited follow up to their 1993 self-titled debut was well worth the wait as its brand of revolutionary rap/protest metal has never been matched elsewhere. Tom Morello again sets the pace here with his guitar wizardry while Zach De La Rocha assaults his subjects with rage and resolve. The results are both profound and just plain powerful. Evil Empire debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts, Bulls on Parade and People of the Sun received Grammy nominations for Best Hard Rock Performance and Tire Me took home the 1996 Grammy award for Best Metal Performance.

    Empire

As a robust rock underground got swallowed alive by the Major Label Industrial Complex, the very autonomous Unwound - Olympia, Washington's Great Noise Hope - toed the troublesome line between pay check and Check Engine light. Captured in the gaps of a ruthless touring schedule, defining fourth and fifth albums The Future of What and Repetition were issued in the back-to-back springs of 1995 and '96. Both find the band severing their post-hardcore roots, for gripping detours into Echoplex, kraut, D&B, and Mingus, as guided by a sun-worn copy of Book Your Own Fuckin' Life. No Energy collects both of these 1990s masterworks, beginning with Justin Trosper's home-made haircut stabs on New Energy, continuing with Vern Rumsey's reanimating bass on Corpse Pose, and closing in a wall of Sara Lund crash cymbals on For Your Entertainment. This 33-song collection is buttressed by singles and period live tracks, a pile of double-exposed photographs, and a 10,000 word essay by latter-day Unwound diarist David Wilcox.

    Hapshash and the Coloured Coat

Featuring The Human Host And The Heavy Metal Kids

One of the most sought-after of all '60s cult LPs, 1967's Hapshash and the Coloured Coat Featuring the Human Host and the Heavy Metal Kids is the sort of record that could only have emerged during the psychedelic era, and a vibrant manifestation of that period's freewheeling boundary-breaking spirit of adventure.

Hapshash and the Coloured Coat, the English duo of Michael English and Nigel Weymouth, initially achieved notoriety as a graphic design team whose distinctive visual sensibility placed them at the center of London's original psychedelic explosion. The pair's vivid visual imagination spawned numerous album covers, including Cream's Disraeli Gears, and countless posters promoting performances at London's legendary UFO Club by such acts as Pink Floyd and the Incredible String Band. Those visual works brilliantly captured the London scene's buoyant, mind-expanding vibe, and feature some of the psychedelic era's most arresting imagery.

Such was Hapshash & the Coloured Coat's prominence and influence that, in 1967, they were given the opportunity to branch out as a recording act. For the occasion, English and Weymouth teamed with legendary producer/manager/DJ/scenester Guy Stevens, whose lengthy resume encompasses work with the Rolling Stones, Procol Harum, Mott the Hoople and The Clash.

The result was Hapshash & the Coloured Coat Featuring the Human Host and the Heavy Metal Kids. The unlikely collaboration produced a one-of-a-kind sonic experience that exemplifies the spirit of psychedelia while sounding like no other record of its time, mixing primal vocal chants and insistent tribal rhythms with proto-funk guitar and bluesy piano on such memorably titled tracks as H-O-P-P Why?, The New Messiah Coming 1985, Empires of the Sun and A Mind Blown Is a Mind Shown.

Out of print on vinyl for decades and never before reissued domestically, Hapshash & the Coloured Coat featuring the Human Host & the Heavy Metal Kids has been meticulously restored for this LP reissue, using Sundazed's usual exacting standards. The album is pressed on high-quality audiophile vinyl, and features complete original cover art.

    Plastic Beach

We rejoin the band as Murdoc the bass player is gathering musicians and collaborators to create the new album. The new Gorillaz empire is set on a strange floating island deep in the South Pacific at the furthest point from any land mass on the planet. Introducing Plastic Beach, an island made entirely of plastic, debris and the washed up remnants of humanity. Amongst the collection of historical remains and discarded rubble, Murdoc finds a book detailing the history of Man right up to the present day, except the last chapter The End of Days has been torn out, the future is missing. Time to get the band together, finish this album and have fun while the sun still shines. To complete the task, Murdoc has assembled some other musicians to join the band at Plastic Beach, these select people would join him on his floating Hellfire Club, as musicians, players and contributors in this wonky, damaged Plastic opera. Mos Def, Bobby Womack, The Horrors, Lou Reed, Little Dragon, rappers Kano and Bashy, Mark. E. Smith, Syrian orchestras, global musicians and more were subpoena-ed to collaborate on this visionary Gorillaz record.

    Desperate Souls of Tortured Times

Welcome to the Taurean Empire; a decaying land where disease, war and corruption is rife. A wretched place of man and beast, where deception, fear and despair fills every dank alleyway and the stench of suffering drifts across endless, sun-scorched plains. As way of ensuring safe passage through this hellish hour, let us introduce your guides for the journey; four road-hardened mortals, brought together by luck, power and coincidence. Ladies and Gentlemen, take up arms and go safely as Age of Taurus show you a world inhabited by the Desperate Souls of Tortured Times....UK based Age of Taurus make no frills Doom-laden heavy metal, with an emphasis on HEAVY. Produced by Jaime Gomez Arellano (Angel Witch, Hexvessel, Ghost), 'Desperate Souls of Tortured Times' is a 42 minute collection of material written during their transition over the past three years. It's an unashamedly heavy voyage down a road less travelled, where each of the seven songs acts as a chapter from an altogether longer tale. Monstrous, mountain-shaking riffs are order of the day in the Empire, stepping aside only for Riddell's searing leads to take hold, whilst the lock-tight Bruce/Claydon rhythm section underpins all. Heading the charge from centre stage, Wright's lyrics act as a vivid narrative, painting pictures of ancient ritual and sprawling landscapes, somewhat reminiscent of Manilla Road and Brocas Helm in their prime. Some might assume that DSOTT is a concept album, however in reality, Age of Taurus is more like a 'concept band', intent on delivering undiluted and intriguing heavy metal to all that will listen.
