EmotionalismEmotionalism from The Avett Brothers is the defining, emotionally-arresting statement of the new indie alternative folk movement. Melding rock, punk, jazz and gospel, The Avetts are reinventing roots music. Theyve become one of the hottest grassroots touring bands in recent memory with shows that have become the stuff of legend. Their signature intensity has catapulted them from tiny college pubs to Bonnaroo. With Emotionalism and a massive U.S. headlining tour that includes Coachella, Bumbershoot and Telluride, The Avett Brothers are poised to break wide open.

The Emotional PlagueSupreme Dicks put out one single in their career. It was a double B-side. Maybe they had a sense of humor, but in hindsight it's hard to tell.
Falling somewhere between Captain Beefheart, Throbbing Gristle and SALEM in the lineage of musicians who've found a muse in the nasty, brutish brevity of life, Supreme Dicks chose to cloak disarmingly real paranoia and grief in the contemporary trappings of late '80s and early '90s lo-fi college rock. They may have inhabited the same sonic and physical space as colleagues like Dinosaur jr. (Lou Barlow was an occasional Dick, and at least one early Dinosaur jr show was actually played by Dicks in disguise), but they stripped away all youthful yearning and anticipation in favor of a bleak and unblinking certainty. Honest, frank, and free of ironic distance. Obtuse and yet so essential that it can't help but feel familiar to anyone who's ever spent a sleepless night wondering whether there's any point to all of this. And, on occasion, warm, intimate and lovely.
The Supreme Dicks formed while students at Massachusetts' Hampshire College in the twilight of the Reagan era. The campus was a fractured post-hippie free-for-all that many students theorized was a right-wing think tank experiment in pitting progressives against each other. The constantly revolving lineup centered around Daniel Oxenberg, Jon Shere, Steve Shavel, Mark Hanson, Jim Spring, and whoever else was around and willing to torture an instrument. They advocated the teachings of Wilhelm Reich and were vocal about focusing their creative energy via celibacy. This may do much to explain the constant, unrelenting tension that provides the driving force behind the most powerful moments in their music. Regardless of tempo or arrangement, Supreme Dicks songs play like soundtracks to autoerotic asphyxiation, haunting tones that ring in the ears at the moment consciousness is lost and not guaranteed to return.
Jagjaguwar is proud to reintroduce the complete recordings of Supreme Dicks in the form of Breathing and Not Breathing, a four CD set that includes both of the band's studio albums, The Unexamined Life from 1993 and The Emotional Plague from 1996, along with 1994's Workingman's Dick, a collection of early archival recordings, and the 1996 EP This Is Not A Dick, which has been fleshed out with rare and unreleased tracks. Mixed EmotionsMixed Emotions is the debut album from Brooklyns Tanlines, the duo of Eric Emm (vocals, guitar, keyboards) and Jesse Cohen (drums, keyboards, bass). Initially a production project, Tanlines have evolved through two acclaimed EPs into a deeply personal, electronic pop group.
The album was recorded in a series of locations after the band were evicted from their own studio, which in turn pushed Emm to focus on his lyrics and songwriting. In the process, he discovered a beautiful baritone vocal style. The lyrics poured out of him, and their maturity and honesty form the core of Mixed Emotions.
Legendary engineer Jimmy Douglass (Timbaland, Aaliyah, Television, Missy Elliot) mixed the album in Miami. The result fuses the music of the bands childhood (New Order, the KLF, Stock Aitken Waterman, Stevie Winwood) with pristine synthetic sounds and their own homespun organic ones.1. Brothers

ADAD-MAT-7213xStephen Malkmus & The Jicks
Real Emotional TrashStephen Malkmus has never made a record that covered nearly as much stylistic ground as Real Emotional Trash, his fourth solo LP (this one credited with The Jicks, like his second, Pig Lib), and the result is a decidedly low-down and heavy record that packs a hell of an emotional punch. Cold Son, Out of Reaches and We Can't Help You are amongst the more gorgeous, contemplative songs Malkmus has ever recorded, but true to form there's no shortage of dark humor or virtuoso guitar work. REDI-YEP-1017xGordon Gano & The Ryans
Under The SunGordon Gano, co-founder of and songwriter for alt-rock monoliths The Violent Femmes returns to the scene he helped spawn with Under the Sun. Film-scoring brothers and Bogmen members Brendan and Billy Ryan join Gano for Gordon Gano & The Ryans' first collaboration and Gordon's first non-Femmes release as a front man. Gano's influence on alternative music is immeasurable and his latest work is sure to remind the music world of the force and presence with which he originally stormed onto the scene in 1983, paving the way for the commercial explosion of alternative music a decade later. Gano's signature emotionalism is present in full force on razor-edged ballads like title track Under the Sun and the gorgeously unfurling Still Suddenly Here. Tense propulsion underpin Wave and Water and Man in the Sand. His most cohesive collaboration yet, Under the Sun marks the beginning of a promising partnership with The Ryans' and the return of a musical heavyweight.Man In The Sand

The Spinners Spinners On Numbered Limited Edition 180g LP From Mobile Fidelity
Spinners' Silky Smooth 1972 Self-titled Record Birthed The Philadelphia Soul Sound: Includes Top 5 Hits I'll Be Around And Could It Be I'm Falling In Love
Mastered From The Original Master Tapes: Mobile Fidelity 180g LP Presents Groundbreaking Soul Album With Pristine Detail, Soothing Warmth, And Involving Emotionalism
Sweeping Strings, Funk Rhythms, Brassy Rejoinders, Immaculate Harmonies, And Satiny Lead Singing Fill Thom Bell's Melodic Arrangements: Few Albums Sound Creamier Than This Watershed Effort
The timeless music and expert arrangements are about the only things smoother than the powder-blue suits sported by the Spinners on the cover of their resplendent self-titled 1972 record. The band's first album for Atlantic after departing Motown, Spinners ranks as an all-time soul classic - a filler-free set boasting immaculate harmonies, sweet melodies, and impeccably matched vocals. Thom Bell's flawless production puts it all over the top. Yielding an ideal balance of lushness and grit, the collaboration between the Detroit-based group and studio veteran yielded a record that birthed the celebrated Philadelphia Sound. Now, you can finally experience it in audiophile-grade sonics.
Mastered from the original tapes and pressed at RTI, Mobile Fidelity's numbered limited-edition 180g LP of Spinners presents the quintet's magnum opus with pristine detail, soothing warmth, and involving emotionalism. Free of previously constraining ceilings, highs soar to their intended heights. Each singer's voice can be distinctly heard amidst the expert mix. Superb dynamics, soundstaging, and imaging highlight Bell's gorgeous orchestrations as well as the Spinners' pillow-soft mellifluousness. Backing instrumentation, ranging from rolling bass lines and punctual horns to swaying strings and crisp high-hat beats, unfolds with reference-caliber purity and transparency. Not many 1970s albums of any genre sound silkier, creamier, or more tonally rich than this LP.
While the career-defining performances within the grooves cannot be overlooked, Spinners remains equally notable for its historical importance. At the dawn of the 70s, Motown still held sway as the dominant soul style. Yet the Spinners' decision to move to Atlantic - prompted by a suggestion by Aretha Franklin - and refashion their approach with Bell signaled a sea change that ushered in a smoother, sweeter variety of R&B punctuated with sweeping strings, jazzy flourishes, brassy replies, and funk rhythms. Few, if any, vocal groups mesh these traits more convincingly, pleasingly, and naturally than the Spinners on this watershed effort.
Anchored by Top 5 smashes like Could It Be I'm Falling In Love, Spinners signaled the beginning of a partnership with Bell that lasted seven years and elevated the band to stardom. Indeed, even in spite of the four hit singles, the record remains defined by an artistic consistency, watertight focus, and collective unity that make everything here deserving of close attention. Flush with catchy hooks and pop accents, each song is treated as a potential anthem. Laden with depth and richness, Bell's savvy, wide-open arrangements frame the Spinners' satiny singing with sensual class and refined delicacy.
Heaven-sent voices do the rest. Making his first appearance on record as a member, Philippe Wynne treats the carefully honed material as a breakout session for his dulcet tenor on tracks such as One of a Kind (Love Affair). Not to be outdone, the equally measured Bobbie Smith mesmerizes with his deft phrasing, reedy timbre, and sparkling clarity, never finer than on the million-selling I'll Be Around. Solo or paired together, Wynne and Smith's glorious leads run the gamut from upbeat and optimistic to sad and forlorn, forming the backbone of a masterwork that addresses romance (Just You and Me Baby), regret (How Could I Let You Get Away), and social ills (Ghetto Child) with consummate passion.

Introspective, Almost-Hallucinogenic 1962 Album a Pinnacle for Both Jazz Icons
Guitarist Hall Aids Pianist Evans in Rebounding from Tragedy
Diverse Set Encompasses Ballads, Waltzes, Hard-Swinging Bop
Divine Sonics: LP Mastered on Mobile Fidelity's World-Renowned Mastering System and Pressed at RTI
Bill Evans catapulted to the top of the jazz world in June 1961 after reeling off three straight masterpiece sessions at New York's Village Vanguard with his trio. Yet the emotional highs came to a screeching halt shortly thereafter when bassist Scott LaFaro died in a car accident. Devastated, Evans refrained from playing for nearly a year. If not for an inspirational collaboration of tremendous creative outpouring, one wonders what fate may have befallen Evans. Undercurrent, the outcome of two studio sessions with guitarist Jim Hall, is that project.
Mastered on Mobile Fidelity's world-renowned mastering system and pressed at RTI, this Silver Label LP edition bursts forth with brilliant textures, you-are-there realism, and extraordinary tonalities. No other version outside of this analog copy brings you face-to-face with these two jazz giants' sonic communion, a kind of spiritual musical summit on which Evans' deft keyboard touches and Hall's reliably subtle phrasings seamlessly mesh and wonderfully dance, the compositions streaked with natural instrumental decay, full-frequency extensions, and poignant emotionalism that, on this LP, you can feel.
While Evans managed to sit down for a few one-off takes between LaFaro's passing and these April-May 1962 dates, he largely remained on hiatus and abstained from recording. Whether it owes to the intimate pairing, he and Hall's brotherly chemistry, or the exquisite selection of program material, the results consistently come across as the equivalent of a private meditation-such is the level of introspective depth and quietly shaded interplay throughout. For Evans, the duet clearly functions as therapy, a healing episode in which his partner patiently lays back, shadowing moves and suggesting others, neither musician interested in the spotlight but each striving for (and achieving) transcendent beauty.
In tackling standards such as Rodgers and Hart's "My Funny Valentine" and the Broadway classic "Darn That Dream," as well as the Hall original "Romain," the pair traverses complex harmonies with the astute elegance of a figure skater. At times, Evans and Hall go for broke on a hard-swinging romps, yet it's their implied melancholy and drifting, softly struck melodic refrains on waltzes and ballads that bestows Undercurrent with a nuanced romanticism and whispered atmosphere befitting the record's title.
Indeed, even the album's cover-an iconic photograph by Toni Frissell-exhibits the surreal, almost-hallucinogenic properties of the fare contained within.

Where Are You? (Awaiting Repress) (On Sale)Mastered from the Original Master Tapes
Where Are You? is perfect in every sense. Recorded when Frank Sinatra was 42, the torch album finds him in impeccable voice and spirit. The dozen tracks fit together as a unified whole; it's difficult to imagine one song missing, or another added. Arranger Gordon Jenkins reads Sinatra's mind, affording him with lush arrangements that break hearts and underscore deliberation. Topping it off, Sinatra's interpretive skills utterly astonish. Genres aside, this 1957 Capitol classic is inarguably one of the ten-best vocal pop efforts made in the 1950s.
The record's splendid beauty and unparalleled emotionalism surface like never before on Mobile Fidelity's numbered, limited edition 180g mono LP. Mastered from the original master tapes, this mono version focuses the instrumentalists, images, vocals, and ambience in a transparent manner that exceeds the detail on the more-common stereo version. In addition, this reissue marks the first time this gem has been made available in mono in several decades. Akin to Mobile Fidelity's previous Sinatra titles, the sound and clarity on this LP takes the Voice into your room, puts him on an imaginary studio stage, and gives you your own private concert.
While not as known as Only the Lonely, Where Are You? is its creative equivalent, a poignant masterwork on which Sinatra reflects on what could have been, ponders life's deep questions, elicits sympathy via romantic distress, and does whatever it takes to get through the night. It is one of Sinatra's alone-at-the-bar statements, his fedora pulled slightly over his eyes, his face fixated on his drink, his only friend the understanding bartender that will keep pouring until last call. Throughout, Sinatra delves into sorrow and desolation. Yet unlike the stark gloom and bleak bitterness on In the Wee Small Hours, this solitary statement echoes with an accepting wistfulness and maturity that parallels a change of seasons-or situations.
Jenkins' warm, classically informed arrangements grant Sinatra the sentiments and support he needs. The sumptuous melodies and burnished strings complement the singer's completely natural delivery; seldom has Sinatra sounded so relaxed, dramatic, warm, cello-like, and in a zone. His lyrical phrasing and rhythmic time-keeping are spot-on; his soulfulness and sensitivity of another world. Sinatra's renditions of "Laura," "Autumn Leaves," and "Lonely Town" are the reference-bearing performances of these famous standards. If you are a fan of vocal music, consider this album mandatory.

Effort Balances Epic Storytelling and Dylan's Heartbreak Over Failing Marriage
Includes Timeless and Tireless Songs "Sara," "Hurricane," and "One More Cup of Coffee (Valley Below)"
Bob Dylan cut Desire flanked by more than a dozen musicians, aided by a producer averse to multitracking, and bent on tequila. Reeling from the effects of his disintegrating marriage, the singer penned several of the most heartfelt songs of his career, including "Sara," the most overtly public broadcasting of his private life and emotions committed to tape. Straddling lines between haphazard and organized, loose and planned, Desire lives up its title, a masterwork that Dylan would not equal in creativity, performance, and lyricism for another two decades.
Mastered from the original master tapes on Mobile Fidelity's world-renowned mastering system and pressed at RTI, this restored 45RPM analog version lays bare the catch-all ambience of the sessions as well as the unguarded emotionalism that fueled them. Largely captured at one unruly New York studio date, many songs are first-take arrangements, experienced on this reissue in a raw, realistic fashion that allows chords to swell, vocals to naturally carry, and percussion to span a seemingly bridge-wide soundstage. Accenting instruments-bouzouki, accordion, mandolin, violin, congas, piano-gain their own space and color the music with intriguing textures. The wider grooves mean more information reaches your ears.
Surging with a nothing-to-lose disposition, Desire juggles myriad styles and owns up to no single theme. Disappointment and loss related to Dylan's broken relationship surfaces directly and metaphorically, but the album isn't mired in depression or sadness. More often than not, it howls, the sprawling canvas needlepointed with complexity and diversity. In pairing with lyricist Jacques Levy, Dylan invites narrative collaboration he never again repeated, as well as an eclecticism that gives the effort its fascinating charm.
Desire finds Dylan at an evocative peak. With the tour de force single "Hurricane," he composes his first protest song in years, the enraged verses aimed squarely at maintaining the innocence of boxer Ruben Carter, falsely convicted of murder, as a violin melody swirls in the background. He finds similar inspiration in gangster Joey Gallo, turning "Joey" into a beautiful epic outfitted with Emmylou Harris' transcendent backing vocals. Flashing a sense of humor, "Mozambique" relishes an irreverent quirkiness that balances the more serious fare.
And in the nakedly biographical "Sara," Mediterranean-flavored "One More Cup of Coffee (Valley Below)," fragile "Oh, Sister," and swirling fable "Isis," Dylan develops a series of loosely related songs at once flawless, timeless, and tireless. Rarely has the folk-rock icon addressed love, romance, and loss more openly, eloquently, or universally. It's no wonder they remain amongst the very favorites of many hardcore Dylan enthusiasts, and account for a large reason why Rolling Stone ranks Desire the 174th greatest album of all-time.
