    Emerson, Lake & Palmer

Originally released in 1970, the debut album from the newly formed supergroup combined musicianship and showmanship in a glowing ball of energy. The keyboard-dominated instrumentals and romantic ballads clearly showcased each of the three members' individual talents, and demonstrated the variety of influence each artist brought with them to the band.

    Works Volume 1

Remastered For The First Time In 24 Bit / High-Density Formats From The Original Tapes

Works Volume 1 (originally released as 'Works') is ELP's fifth studio album, released as a double LP in 1977, and now expertly remastered for the first time in 24 bit / High-Density formats from the original tapes and reissued here as a 2LP set. The album is comprised of three solo band member LP sides, with the fourth showcasing the complete group.

Works Volume 1 features ELP's anthemic and stylish 'Fanfare For The Common Man', a massive hit which reached No.2 in the U.K.; the brilliant, Keith Emerson compiled, Piano Concerto No.1, performed with the London Philharmonic Orchestra; excellent romantic songs from Greg Lake at the peak of his creativity, and hard rocking classical adaptations from Carl Palmer - featuring Joe Walsh on lead guitar for one song. This album took ELP's bombastic, keyboard-driven prog rock epics to the limit.

Formed in 1970, Emerson, Lake & Palmer were torchbearers of the progressive rock sound and one of rock's first supergroups. The world-conquering, stadium-filling prog giants helped to broaden the audience for the genre from hundreds of thousands into tens of millions and were one the most commercially successful rock bands of the 1970s. Their first 7 album releases all made the U.K. albums chart top 10 and U.S. top 20.

Works Volume 2 is ELP's sixth studio album, released in 1977, and now expertly remastered for the first time in 24 bit / High-Density formats from the original tapes. The album's brief, eclectic compositions cover an array of musical styles, combining stimulating originals and handsomely orchestrated renditions of 'Maple Leaf Rag,' 'Honky Tonk Train Blues,' and 'Show Me The Way to Go Home.' Pictures At An Exhibition

Released in 1972, this classical music meets 70's progressive rock performance was recorded live during a concert at Newcastle's City Hall. The band performs the legendary Mussorgsky piano cycle with all the power, energy and authority of a '70s rock power trio; giving the legendary classical piece a contemporary, unique feel.

In the Seventies, numerous rock and pop groups attempted to produce a maximum of sound on the stage with a minimum of manpower. The majority of them failed miserably in their struggles to master the Moog synthesizer with its 28 million varieties of sound but not so Keith Emerson, Greg Lake and Carl Palmer! Their legendary rock version of Mussorgskys piano cycle, which was set down for posterity during a live concert in Newcastles City Hall, towers above all other recordings of the kind. Perhaps their success is due to the fact that the trio avoided a Late Romantic powerful sound and steered away from the temptations of creating electronic, grandiose sound effects. Their vocals, guitar and drums produced a highly original and contemporary yet soulful rendering.

Even if you aren't into British rock-pop, you should still listen to this album. Those who choose to ignore it dont know what they are missing!

    Brain Salad Surgery

Brain Salad Surgery is the fourth studio album by progressive rock band Emerson, Lake & Palmer, originally released in 1973 and the first under their Manticore Records imprint. It fuses rock and classical themes. Greg Lake wrote the lyrics for the album with the assistance (on two tracks, Karn Evil 9: 3rd Impression and Benny the Bouncer) of former King Crimson bandmate (and, beginning with this album, frequent ELP collaborator) Peter Sinfield. This was the first Emerson, Lake & Palmer album to have no songwriting contributions from Carl Palmer. The cover art is by H. R. Giger.

    Tarkus

Behold Tarkus, the mighty mythical beast! Rarely has such a powerful image come to define both a band and a genre of rock music with such forthright aggression. But Tarkus, the second album released by Emerson, Lake & Palmer, not only consolidated the group's success but established 'progressive rock' an important facet of Seventies' music.

Tarkus was certified gold in the United States shortly after its release on 26 August 1971.

    The Magician's Birthday

Influential 1972 Record Delves into Moody Fantasy Worlds, Thematically Bookends British Band's Demons and Wizards

Organic Production and Tonal Shadings Exude Revered Early 70s Hi-Fi Sound: Reissue Faithfully Replicates Original Gatefold Sleeve and Pressed on Colored Vinyl

Loosely based on a story by Ken Hensley, The Magician's Birthday continues Uriah Heep's adventurous immersion into fantasy worlds at a time when similarly sci-fi pop-culture releases such as Star Wars and Dungeons and Dragons were still years away. Influential in concept, appearance, and sound, the 1972 record remains a thematic bookend to Demons and Wizards, released the same year and, akin to this set, recognized as the group's high-water mark. Both records resonate with a newfound vitality in a 21st century engrossed in a resurgence in comic-book superheroes and gothic tales.

Pursuing a more streamlined, cleaner sound that scales back harder arrangements and accentuates prog-rock and blues elements, the British band accentuates texture and hooks throughout. Uriah Heep attains a dynamic balance between brief, punchy fare (Spider Woman) and spooky, cosmic piano balladry (Echoes in the Dark), with guitarist Mick Box supplying versatile leads and underlying narratives with exceptional tonal shadings. Space-rock synthesizers and subtle xylophones help in further setting the moods. The Magician's Birthday skirts the parody that befell many albums that copied its formula by way of fine-tuned songwriting, David Byron's passionate singing, and cohesive playing. Groups ranging from Iron Maiden to Emerson Lake and Palmer drew from its example.

Boasting arguably the strongest production of Uriah Heep's career, the record exudes early 70s warmth and organic sonics. As soon as your turntable's needle hits the grooves, an era renowned for wood-encased receivers, tube amplifiers, and vintage instruments will emerge in front of your eyes. Whether it's the whirring organ and eerie frequency effects on the crunchy FM radio favorite Sweet Lorraine or the ringing bells on the epic multi-part title track, The Magician's Birthday pulls you into its spell with ethereal power and supernatural charm.

Complete with a faithful replication of the original gatefold sleeve, and replete with dead-quiet surfaces, this Wax Cathedral reissue is pressed at RTI, America's best record plant. Better still, it's on colored vinyl, to boot!

Welcome Back, My Friends, To The Show That Never Ends - Ladies And Gentlemen

Welcome Back My Friends, To The Show That Never Ends - Ladies and Gentlemen is a 1974 live album by progressive rock band Emerson, Lake & Palmer. This was the last ELP release for almost three years while the band took an extended break to recover and pursue some solo projects that eventually ended up on their next release Works Volume 1 in 1977.

The album was recorded during the 1973/1974 Someone Get Me a Ladder world tour. The title of the album comes from the introduction to the performance, itself a paraphrase of the opening line of the song Karn Evil 9: First Impression, Part 2. The welcome back my friends hook was also used by Alan Freeman on some of his radio shows.

    Love Beach

Remastered For The First Time In 24 Bit / High-Density Formats From The Original Tapes

'Love Beach' (1978) is the final ELP studio album from the 1970s classic era, expertly remastered for the first time in 24 bit / High-Density formats from the original tapes. The LP finds the band back to their intimate best - producing a lighter, more concise and accessible album - and jamming in the relaxed atmosphere of a studio in Nassau, Bahamas. As usual, ELP produced an excellent, technically accomplished mix of classical music and electronics, once again unearthing their extraordinary musical chemistry. Includes fans' / live favorites 'The Gambler' and the rockin' 'Canario' (based on Rodrigo's 'Fantasia Para Un Gentilhombre'). Side 2 is taken up by the superb 'Memoirs Of An Officer And A Gentleman' - one of their finest suites, highlighting voice, piano, and marching drums...

1969 keyboard player Vincent Crane and drummer Carl Palmer, left The Crazy World of Arthur Brown and founded ATOMIC ROOSTER. The debut album was published in 1970 and became a respectable success, but Palmer moved to Emerson, Lake & Palmer, who became one of the supergroups of the Seventies. Crane continued with John DuCann on guitar and this occupation is still regarded as the most successful line-up of Atomic Rooster. After the second album DuCann got off. Then in 1979, the sensation, Crane and DuCann came together again. The same called album came out in 1980.

    Tales From Topographic Oceans

Tales from Topographic Oceans is the sixth studio album from the English rock band Yes, originally released as a double album on 7 December 1973 by Atlantic Records.

Yes is among the longest lasting and most successful of the '70s progressive rock groups, proving to be one of the lasting success stories from that musical genre. The band, founded in 1968, overcame a generational shift in its audience and the departure of its most visible members at key points in its history to reach the end of the century as the definitive progressive rock band. Where rivals such as Emerson, Lake & Palmer withered away commercially after the mid-'70s, and Genesis and King Crimson altered their sounds so radically as to become unrecognizable to their original fans, Yes retained the same sound, and performed much of the same repertoire that they were doing in 1971, and for their trouble, found themselves being taken seriously a quarter of a century later. Their audience remained huge because they had always attracted younger listeners drawn to their mix of daunting virtuosity, cosmic (often mystical) lyrics, complex musical textures, and powerful yet delicate lead vocals.

Premiata Forneria Marconi, better known in English speaking countries as P.F.M., were arguably the finest Italian Progressive rock band of the 1970s and certainly one of the most well known. A successful act in their home land, they came to international attention when they signed to Emerson, Lake and Palmer's label MANTICORE in 1973. They recorded the album The World Became The World in 1974. Christmas Extraordinaire (On Sale)

Christmas Extraordinare is another innovative and heartfelt collection of seasonal treasures played on a combination of 18th-century instruments and modern-day synthesizers, drums, and electric guitars. While not the first to marry different ages of musical instruments, Davis and his cohorts use them with imagination and an intensity that gives new life and drama to this rather inert genre.

For material, Mannheim Steamroller asked their fans to choose their favorite holiday selections and vote on their Web site. The results of the poll are a fine mix of old and new--with slightly more emphasis on the modern--ranging from the bracing Fum, Fum, Fum, a traditional Catalan carol, to Tchaikovsky's Faeries from The Nutcracker. Mannheim Steamroller imbues this beloved song with an almost militaristic edge, grounding it with an ominous tuba that gives the usually fey Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies an edgy tension. Winter Wonderland is a spectacular work, bordering on prog rock, as if Emerson, Lake & Palmer had re-formed to whip up a winter blizzard gone amok.

While most of the Mannheim Steamroller's Christmas albums are largely instrumental, Davis has employed the considerable talents of University of Michigan's Glee Club to sing on O Tannenbaum, respectfully fading their elegant, full vocals around the pristine voice of Johnny Mathis, elevating this German carol to a cinematic peak. -Jaan Uhelszki
