An Unforgettable Exhibition of Stellar Melodies, Gorgeous Arrangements, and Fully Bared Emotion: Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach's Brilliant Painted from Memory a Collaboration for the Ages

Mastered from the Original Master Tapes and Strictly Limited to 3,000 Numbered Copies: Mobile Fidelity 180g LP of Painted from Memory Features Incredible Detail, Lushness, Textures, and Scope

Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach's Painted from Memory endures as an extraordinary exhibition of prime music making, gorgeous arranging, and naked emotion. Having transpired after the pair teamed up on God Give Me Strength for a film soundtrack (and the closing track here), the album has since gone on to become one of the most respected - and admired - projects of each artist's considerable careers. Its expert employment of melody and harmony imparts a timelessness that stretches back to pop's golden age and icons such as Roy Orbison, Ray Charles, and Frank Sinatra. Further boosted by meticulous production, it has long called out for audiophile treatment. Mobile Fidelity's analog reissue brings it all full circle.

Mastered from the original master tapes, pressed on dead-quiet 180g vinyl at RTI, and strictly limited to 3,000 numbered copies, Mobile Fidelity's vinyl LP of Painted from Memory transforms the 1998 set into an essential component of any library. Always an effort that rewarded solitary listening, it now breathes with ravishing openness, reveals crystalline detail, unfolds against jet-back backgrounds, mesmerizes with a rainbow of textures, and constantly engages with its impossible smoothness. For the first time, the scope of the intricacies, nuances, and phrasings embedded in Bacharach's meticulous compositions can be experienced in full. The orbit of the bridges, refrains, and codas beguiles the senses. Ditto the poetic reach of Costello's singing and lyrics.

Indeed, the level of care and concern invested into every passage of Painted from Memory is immediately gleaned by the ravishing sonics afforded on this collectable edition - amazingly, the first time this title has been available on LP. Reference-grade presence, tonality, and balance help capture the sweep of the strings, colorful blush of the horn accents, and weight of the piano. Steve Nieve's keyboards, Greg Cohen's bass, Dean Parks' guitar, and Jim Keltner's drums seemingly appear right in the room. Rather than smear together or jockey for position, each instrument enjoys its own place and simultaneously sounds part of the rich, lush, complex albeit completely interwoven tapestry. Graceful, elegant, and classicist-minded, Painted from Memory is a genuine masterpiece - and a true collaboration.

No wonder Costello dedicated a large portion of a chapter from his Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink memoir to his time with Bacharach. Among his insights, Costello explains how crafting the album forced him to be a better writer and singer - and a better listener, stating: Writing those first songs with Burt Bacharach required me to listen to what the music was really saying to me. Sometimes it was speaking so quietly that I needed to listen very intently. I needed time for the meaning and feeling that I sensed in the music to be confirmed by my own words. The strange thing was that the title of a song often came to me in an instant, but then would begin the more excruciating task of negotiating Burt's spacious melodies and rhythmic subtleties.

The very aspects Costello discusses come to the forefront on remarkable torch pieces such as the intensely dramatic This House Is Empty Now, melancholic Thief, and Grammy-winning I Still Have That Other Girl. In addition to Bacharach's suave, sophisticated, strikingly exquisite orchestrations, Costello's vocals carry the day. Straddling two octaves and sighing with pain, bittersweet romance, and wistful reflection, his baritone stretching to convey highs and lows with crooner-like poise, breadth, and fastidiousness. Thrilling, distinctive, and memorable, the performances are just like the entirety of Painted from Memory itself - unforgettably great.

    Wise Up Ghost (On Sale)

Long-rumored and shrouded in mystery, this collaborative album between Elvis Costello and The Roots promises to be one of the most unexpected and
revelatory releases of 2013. Born out of multiple performances by Costello on the Roots' day/night job at Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, this album developed organically and is definitely a situation where the whole is greater than the sum of the amazing parts. It surprises with how good the two
elements gel, but also sounds exactly how you'd think in your wildest dreams. As The Roots' ?uestlove notes, "it's a moody, brooding affair, cathartic rhythms and dissonant lullabies. I went stark and dark on the music. Elvis went HAM on some ole Ezra Pound shit"

"Really does combine the strengths of its authors: Costello's voice, lyrics, and melody are driven by the Roots' powerful, swinging groove." - Stereogum

"Sounds like vintage Costello, with a deep, dubby bassline- Los Angeles Times

"A funky, icy groove, replete with a throwback organ sound and Costello singing like he did in his "Watching the Detectives era."- SPIN

    This Year's Model

    180 Gram Vinyl

Elvis Costello's follow-up to his debut release is now on 180 gram vinyl re-mastered from the original master tapes. This was Elvis's first album with The Attractions and includes the songs "Pump It Up," "I Don't Want To Go To (Chelsea)" and "Radio, Radio."

Stylistically versatile, deeply varied, and melodically catchy, this where Costello came into his ownand where the chemistry between virtuosic keyboardist Steve Nieve, bassist Bruce Thomas, and drummer Pete Thomas produced one of rocks best groups. A dynamic maelstrom of emotional spite, bitter frustration, sexual angst, and caustic political commentary, the 1978 set boosted Costellos star and yielded innumerable standards: the undying MOR protest Radio Radio, fervent Pump It Up, smart (I Dont Want to Go to) Chelsea, and spunky No Action are all here. While often cited as Costellos angry record,

This Years Model has more to do with disappointments and denials. The album bursts forth with a savage energy not possible without the Attractions, which are responsible for the songs being built from the ground up. Where Costellos voice and twangy guitar dominate My Aim Is True, here, sizzling rhythms and Nieves colorful organ runs anchor the foundations. This is a group effort, with Costellos biting lyrics taking chances and forcing the listener to mull double meanings all the while the music zooms by at a fast clip.

    Get Happy!!

Elvis Costello and the Attractions masterful Get Happy!! is largely believed born of national scandal. While in a Holiday Inn bar, the English singer attempted to end an annoying conversation by baiting Stephen Stills with outrageous, offensive racial remarks about Ray Charles and James Brown. With everyone involved inebriated, the details are unclear, but the falloutdeath threats, radio embargos, protestsis infamous. The upshot? Costello and company retreated, scrapped a planned record, and created the soulful genius that is Get Happy!!, the bands fourth consecutive five-star effort.

Half-speed mastered from the original master tapes, and pressed on two 45RPM LPs to replicate the very first promotional pressing in the UK, the 1980 LP has never sounded better on any format. Rather than cram nearly 50 minutes of music and 20 songs onto a single record, Mobile Fidelity has gone the extra mile and back to the album's UK roots with two 45RPM discs. For the first time, listeners can home in on the records signature sound that relates to the decision to record the vocals in a studios glass strings room. In addition, the dimensions and images associated with Steve Nieves penetrating organ, Pete Thomas punchy drumming, and Costellos bounding vocals know no limits. The music simply leaps off the proverbial page, the uptempo rhythms jumping and nimble bass lines kicking.

Clearly, the group is motivated, and the leader brings some of his very finest songs to the table, including High Fidelity, Riot Act, Motel Matches, and The Imposter. While some believe the drunken incident caused Costello to shelve a planned new-wave-leaning effort for the soul-stoked Get Happy!!, the vocalist claims that his ability to find so many great soul records in America from 1977 through 1979 inspired the group to change course. Whatever the cause, Get Happy!! is a start-to-finish wonder.

Paying homage to Northern soul, Motown, Stax, and Southern soul strains, and infused with smooth and gritty arrangements, Get Happy!! runs on an efficient R&B motor. Subtle tributes abound. High Fidelity quotes a Supremes song; Love for Tender borrows a Supremes riff; Opportunity tips its hat to Al Green; Clowntime Is Over bows to Curtis Mayfield. And two covers, of Sam & Daves I Cant Stand Up for Falling Down and the Merseybeats I Stand Accused, are recast as quick, R&B rave-ups. Theres not a misplaced note or bad step on this record. And for history buffs, the closing, searing ballad Riot Act is Costellos response to his hypocritical critics and finger-pointers.

As essential as anything in Costellos catalog, and one of the truly great records of the 1980s, you owe it to yourself to experience Get Happy!! in the supreme sonic fidelity that this numbered limited edition Mobile Fidelity double-LP pressing affords. For those intimately familiar with its contents, listening will be a revelation. And for fans that have never heard the record, prepare to be wowed.

Part of Mobile Fidelitys Costello catalog restoration series, Get Happy!! will make you positively ecstatic.

Spike is a real mixed bag to Elvis Costello standards; it seems like he covers the whole musical spectrum on this wonderful album from 1989. Working together with such greats as Paul McCartney, Byrds singer Roger McGuinn and The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Costello delivers an album that is chok full of variety. Soul, Broadway, Rockabilly, the list of styles goes on and combined result in a great Pop album. His elastic voice tops it o in good fashion. Delivery Man

In celebration of their 10-year Anniversary, Lost Highway Records is re-releasing twenty of their most acclaimed albums including Elvis Costello's The Delivery Man on limited edition clear vinyl.

With 2004's The Delivery Man, Elvis Costello & the Imposters' first release for Lost Highway, one of modern music's most admired and prolific talents delivered a remarkable album that draws on deep American musical roots more than any of his releases since King of America in 1986.

Recorded in Oxford, MS and produced by Dennis Herring (Modest Mouse, Counting Crows, Buddy Guy & Cracker) and Elvis Costello, it is a collection that ranges from the ferocious, bass-driven opening track, Button My Lip, which speaks in the voice of a desperate man on the verge of committing a terrible crime, to a tender and timely closing rendition of, The Scarlet Tide, referred to by Costello's co-composer and fellow Oscar Nominee, T Bone Burnett as an anti-fear song.

Like a lot of great things in music history, The Delivery Man can be said to have started with the late great Johnny Cash. The Delivery Man is actually a character imported from a song I wrote in about 1986 for Johnny Cash, Costello explains. He's based on a real character. I read this story in the paper about a man who confessed to murdering his childhood friend thirty years later, having been in prison for a number of other things. I thought this story was very interesting because he'd carried this burden of guilt of this childhood crime. I wrote a fictional version of that story in a song called 'Hidden Shame,' which John recorded.

Beyond the Imposters, longtime Attractions Pete Thomas and Steve Nieve, and more recent revelation Faragher, The Delivery Man also features winning turns from two of Costello's own favorite artists, Emmylou Harris and Lucinda Williams.

    Trust

Trust Is Most Eclectic and Ambitious Record of Elvis Costello's Career: "[His] Summit as a Singer, Songwriter, and Miserable-Irish-Bastard Pin-Up Boy" Says Rolling Stone

Mastered from the Original Master Tapes: Mobile Fidelity LP of Trust Enhances the Realism of the Songs' Advanced Arrangements and Nimble Accents

1981 Album Mixes R&B Rhythms and New-Wave Melodies: Includes "Clubland," "Watch Your Step," and "Strict Time"

The album cover to Trust speaks volumes: Elvis Costello, bathed in shadows, his eyes nervously peering out from behind his sunglasses, his face conveying a combination of edgy noir purpose and guilt-ridden anxiety. Indeed, the tension-rich songs within largely convey the opposite meanings of the record's title, with the British icon musing on what lies beyond arrogant youth and immediate success with a jaundiced, scarred perspective informed by his country's political climate and his own experiences.

Of course, this being Costello and the Attractions, everything is wrapped into a catchy batch of songs that encourage listeners to hear them multiple times before they reveal their true intent. On Trust, almost nothing is what it seems, a condition that only enhances what remains the most diverse set of Costello's career. Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed at RTI, Mobile Fidelity's transparent analog reissue lets music lovers in on the secrets via unsurpassed clarity and breathtaking immediacy.

Whether the full, rounded tones of Bruce Thomas' bass or complete extension and decay of Steve Nieve's organ, every instrumental accent is delivered with lifelike detail and superb balance. Melodicas, drums, pianos, and guitars similarly come across faithfully and richly, the blend freed of constricting sonic veils and dynamic compression. Heard anew on this pressing, Trust emerges as one of the most satisfyingly complex and expertly played albums of its era. Costello's singing, too, reveals intricate tonal shadings and implied meanings, with slower tracks such as the hypnotic "Watch Your Step" and Tin Pan Alley-inspired solo tour de force "Shot With His Own Gun" ravishing with enhanced emotional investment.

As is often the case with great (and sophisticated) albums, Trust-which retains a five-star review from the most recent Rolling Stone Album Guide-didn't spawn any Top 40 hits at the time of its release. Yet age has been more than kind to the effort Costello said aimed to cross the rhythms of Get Happy!! with the melodies of Armed Forces, and which more than achieves the exacting goal. Admittedly made in a haze of booze and pills, the 1981 affair plumbs issues of disillusionment, romance, and sin with barbed wit and unvarnished honesty.

Country, soul, pop, rockabilly, two-step, punk-shot-through rock, jazz-Costello and the Attractions explore and master it all on Trust, all the while performing with an unencumbered directness and on-point coherence. No better example of the singer's simultaneous stylistic reach and virtuosity exists. Experience it like never before on this phenomenal-sounding pressing.

    Dondestan Revisited 1991-1998

    Limited Edition

    Only 2000 Copies Made

Its far too easy to abuse the phrase living legend, but when used to describe Robert Wyatt, youre in no danger of hyperbole: gifted songwriter; political activist; drummer in the Canterbury jazz/prog pioneers Soft Machine and contemporaries of the original lineup of Pink Floyd; collaborator with the likes of Brian Eno, David Gilmour, Phil Manzanera, Fred Frith, Paul Weller, Scritti Politti, Elvis Costello and his beloved wife Alfreda Benge, to name but a few.

Perhaps his greatest gift though is his voice, a reedy instrument of great warmth and emotion; one need only hear his interpretation of the classic Shipbuilding (a song that was written for him by Costello and producer Clive Langer) and you shall be smitten for life. Domino is incredibly honored to be releasing a near-complete re-issue series of Roberts solo recorded works in the form of these limited edition LP+CD versions. Each title is limited to 2000 copies. There will be only one pressing so, once these are gone, they are gone for good.

Originally released in 1991, Dondestan was remixed and reappraised in the studio in 1998 as Dondestan Revisited. Wyatt claimed he 'ran out of words' so by basing half of the album's tracks on her beautifully fragmented lyrics, began a song writing collaboration with wife Alfie Benge that flourishes to this day. Unlike its predecessor, Dondestan also reunites Wyatt with the top half of the drum kit, which makes for typically inventive, lively and reflective accompaniment.

    King Of America

King of America on Numbered Limited Edition 180 Gram LP from Mobile Fidelity

Costello Teams With Musical Legends and Standout Producer T-Bone Burnett on Exemplary 1986 Album

Mastered from the Original Master Tapes: Mobile Fidelity LP Maximizes the Get-In, Get-Out, Live-In-the-Studio Immediacy and De-Congested Mix

Includes Introspective Songwriting Gems Such as "Indoor Fireworks," "Poisoned Rose," "Brilliant Mistake," and "Little Palaces"

Juggling Themes of Desire and Exile, Costello Strips Arrangements Down to Folk, Country and Pub-Rock Roots

Elvis Costello spent the year prior to recording King of America embarking on a solo tour, usually accompanied by producer/singer-songwriter T-Bone Burnett. The pair's decision to collaborate on Costello's 1986 album came naturally, and the music sounds it-emotional, effortless, literate, seemingly uncomplicated. Credit, however, not only goes to the best batch of Costello originals since 1982's Imperial Bedroom, but to the literally awesome and awe-inspiring cast of musicians Burnett invited to participate.

Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed at RTI, Mobile Fidelity's 180 gram LP of this masterpiece broadens the live-in-the-studio intimacy and opens up the midrange, highs, and lows of Burnett's fabulously de-congested mix. Made with few overdubs or effects, King of America relishes organic approaches and faithful tones-as well as a vast spaciousness and balance not always evident on Costello's efforts with the attractions. Finally, Mobile Fidelity transports the listener to the semicircle of players that surrounded Costello in the studio, and highlights the benefits of the center-of-the-production miking technique employed on the singer's voice and guitar playing.

Given the brilliance of the performances, every music fan will want to be brought as near as possible to the purity of these sessions. A Hall of Fame-caliber list of instrumentalists accompany Costello, with Elvis Presley's T.C.B. mates Ron Tutt (drums), James Burton (guitar), and Jerry Scheff (bass) forming one band and drummer Earl Palmer (Little Richard), bassist Ray Brown (Oscar Peterson, Duke Ellington), pianist Tom Canning, and organist Mitchell Froom ready in waiting as another. Several of these musicians formed yet another band, joined by drummer Jim Keltner of Bob Dylan, George Harrison, and John Lennon fame. Oh-and the Attractions make a guest appearance on one track.

King of America-the title reflective of the threads of intentional, thought-provoking contradiction throughout-would be exemplary if just for the troupe. Yet it's the combination of chemistry, ability, sonics, and tunes that propel this watertight platter to iconic status. Unconcerned with writing a radio hit or adhering to a single musical theme, Costello wrote a majority of the material on acoustic guitar and on piano, tapping his pub-rock and folk roots in turning out songs that remain some of the catchiest, introspective, and deep of his career. Cuts such as "Indoor Fireworks," "Poisoned Rose," "Brilliant Mistake," and "Suit of Lights" epitomize Costello's inimitable manner of viewing adulthood, romance, and geographical transition through a transparent lens that blocks neither truth nor consequence.

As for the music? It swings (vide, Scheff's bass line on "Lovable"), swishes (Keltner's brushes on "I'll Wear It Proudly"), jumps (Brown's string bass on "Eisenhower Blues"), swoons ("Poisoned Rose"), and shuffles ("Jack of All Parades"). There's truly not a bum track here, and now, experienced in such high fidelity, the genius of every contributor can be easily heard and felt. Akin to Mobile Fidelity's other Costello reissues, this is not to be missed.

    My Aim Is True

    180 Gram Vinyl

Elvis Costello's phenomenal debut release is available on 180 gram vinyl re-mastered from the original master
tapes. The album includes the standout ballad "Alison," "(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes," "Watching The Detectives," and "Less Than Zero" among others

The history behind My Aim Is True is as rich as the songs. Before landing at then-fledgling English indie label Stiff Records, Costello had been laboring as a computer operator housed next door to a lipstick factory. The conditions couldnt be riper for the cynical blue-collar observations and fierce humor that pierce tracks like Welcome to the Working Week and Less Than Zero. Costello took inspiration from London subway rides, venomous politics, and surrounding vanity.

Having been rejected by what he estimated amounted to every other label in the city, Costello began calling in sick to his day job in order to record material for what become My Aim Is True. Made for just 1000 pounds and over the course of four six-hour sessions, the experience found Costello recording his parts in a room the size of a telephone booth. His backing bandClover, not the Attractions (save for on Watching the Detectives, left off the original UK release)rounded out the slinky, melodic songs with spare details such as fuzztone pedal steel guitar and organ. The minimal budget ensured that nothing extra or fancy was employed. Overdubs werent really an option; what was played is basically what you hear.

    Armed Forces

    180 Gram Vinyl

Re-mastered from the original master tapes, this classic Elvis Costello album is now on 180 gram vinyl. Armed
Forces features the original U.S. cover and includes a 7" EP of "Live at Hollywood High." This album hit #10 on the Billboard Top 100 and highlights include "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace Love And Understanding?," "Oliver's Army" and "Accidents Will Happen."

Largely written on tour in hotel rooms and on the bus, Elvis Costellos Armed Forces takes personal politics to a new level. A supremely melodic and hook-laden record, the 1979 set is a showcase of scintillating keyboard lines, sharp guitar work, and the most cohesive arrangements of Costello and the Attractions career. In every way, this is a pop masterpiece, defined by hits such as Accidents Will Happen, Olivers Army, and the anthemic Whats So Funny Bout Peace Love and Understanding? You need this record.

While less musically intense than the preceding This Years Model, Armed Forces doesnt let up in the lyric department. Costellos narratives are loaded with paranoia, irony, bitterness, and scathing humor. Originally titled Emotional Fascism, the singers third consecutive masterpiece is inspired by billboard sign slogans, insular observations, and social behavior that Costello found applicable to his own situation. Olivers Army, Green Shirt, and Senior Service address systemic governmental control. Big Boys, Two Little Hitlers, and Accidents Will Happen also concern control and betrayalbut that of the interpersonal nature.

    High Fidelity

Original soundtrack to the film High Fidelity (15th Anniversary).

Gen X rock buffs can revel in nostalgia with the High Fidelity soundtrack. The film centers on the romantic escapades of record-store owner and ex-club DJ Rob Gordon (John Cusack) and his full-time obsession with music. Since High Fidelity has as much to do with vinyl addiction as it does with the difficulties of love, great care has been taken with its selection of tracks, a solidly eccentric collection of heartache-heavy pop gems ranging from obscure '60s bands and groundbreaking artists like the Velvet Underground and Bob Dylan, to Stevie Wonder and Stereolab. As in the film, there's a method to the compilers' elitist rock-geek madness. Even co-star Jack Black's schlocky blue-eyed cover of Marvin Gaye's Let's Get It On doesn't seem out of place.

The inspired screeches of acid-fried '60s singer-songwriter Roky Erickson's You're Gonna Miss Me set the pace for the musing, hangdog tone of the album. Besides the joyous licks of the Kinks' Everybody's Gonna Be Happy and Royal Trux's hybrid of hip-hip, techno, and aggressive rock on Inside Game, the bulk of the set is composed of moody folk-rock tunes like Dylan's exquisite Most of the Time and the Velvets' Oh! Sweet Nuthin. Other noteworthy tracks include Love's Always See Your Face, the Beta Band's Dry the Rain, Elvis Costello's wistful Shipbuilding, the stinging irony of Smog's Cold Blooded Old Times, and Stevie Wonder's soulful optimism on I Believe (When I Fall in Love It Will Be Forever). It's a fine, complementary batch of tunes that not only enhances the film's mood but is integral to its theme, and, as High Fidelity's Rob Gordon would agree, it'll go down as one of the top five soundtracks [originally] released in 2000. - Derrick Mathis (AllMusic)

    Lay Me Down

Analogue Productions proudly brings you Lay Me Down, alternative rock /folk / pop diva Nancy Bryans stunning debut album of original songs touching on a variety of emotions from apocalyptic visions and the struggle of the inner soul to sensitively spun tales of love spinning out of control.

Nancy has been likened to Joni Mitchell and Sarah McLachlan but with an edge. Lay Me Down features an all-star group of musicians including producer /guitarist John Koenig, bassists Dan Schwartz (Tuesday Music Club, Linda Perry, Sheryl Crow and more), Jimmy Johnson (James Taylor and more) and Jerry Scheff (Elvis Costello, Roy Orbison, Elvis Presley and more), drummers Burleigh Drummond (Ambrosia) and Peter Erskine (Weather Report, Steely Dan and more) and songwriter, acoustic guitarist and vocalist John Bryan.

Nancy Bryan has a crystalline soprano and a mournful songwriting sensibility, highlighted by one of the most dynamic and timbrally pure recordings I've heard in a long time...the disc sounds naturally ambient, crisp and articulate.

    This Year's Model

Ranked 98/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

The first record he made with his legendary backing band the Attractions, This Years Model is Elvis Costellos most explosive and urgent album. Picking up where his fine My Aim Is True left off, the British singer/guitarist blasts through 13 excellent tracks with the fervent purpose and headlong pace of someone who has a cab waiting for him outside.

While often cited as Costellos angry record, This Years Model has more to do with disappointments and denials.

More than 30 years after its original release, This Years Model will still leave you breathless. Railing against unachievable desires, Costello and company delight in the anguish, and spit such torment back out in the form of hook-ridden music that functions as a brilliant form of situational confirmation and emotional catharsis.

Half-speed mastered from the original tapes, Mobile Fidelitys numbered limited-edition 180-gram LP brings This Years Models vicious songs to the forefront like never before. Punchier, gutsier, and livelier than any of the myriad CD remasters, this analog edition offers a transparent window onto the Attractions' loose interplay, Nieve's carnivalesque organ work, and rabid pounce of the Thomas-Thomas rhythm section. Here, for the first time, are previously buried tones, textures, and details. It took years to happen, but this is how This Years Model was always supposed to sound.

Deep Dead Blue - Live At Meltdown

Available on Vinyl For The First Time

A lovely, understated exercise in minimalism, Deep Dead Blue documents a set of otherwise unaccompanied guitar/vocal duets between Bill Frisell and Elvis Costello, recorded live at the Meltdown Festival in London's Queen Elizabeth Hall on June 25, 1995.

Frisell co-wrote the title track, one of the five songs bearing a Costello credit; the others are underexposed items from Costello's mid- to late-'80s catalog, plus selections by Charles Mingus (Weird Nightmare) and Lerner & Loewe (Gigi).

Costello is once again the refined, mature vocal stylist of Painted From Memory, but Frisell expertly controls the dynamics of each piece, often stripping his part down to single-note lines, which lends surprising emotional impact when he allows full chords to wash over Costello's voice.

Audiophile Reference Sonics: Mobile Fidelity LP Presents Lean, Stripped-Back, and Open Sound With Startling Immediacy and Realism

Soundtrack Merges Electric Fusion, Slashing Rock, and Aggressive Funk Via Astounding Lineup: Guitarist John McLaughlin and Trumpeter Davis Turn In Blistering Performances

Powerhouse 1971 Album the Greatest Jazz-Rock Record Ever Made

The album cover to Trust speaks volumes: Elvis Costello, bathed in shadows, his eyes nervously peering out from behind his sunglasses, his face conveying a combination of edgy noir purpose and guilt-ridden anxiety. Indeed, the tension-rich songs within largely convey the opposite meanings of the record's title, with the British icon musing on what lies beyond arrogant youth and immediate success with a jaundiced, scarred perspective informed by his country's political climate and his own experiences.

Miles Davis' A Tribune to Jack Johnson is the best jazz-record ever made. Equally inspired by the leader's desire to assemble the "greatest rock and roll band you have ever heard" as well as his adoration of Johnson, Davis created a hard-hitting set that spills over with excitement, intensity, majesty, and power. Bridging the electric fusion he'd pursued on earlier efforts with a funkier, dirtier rhythmic approach, Davis zeroes in on concepts of spontaneity, freedom, and identity seldom achieved in the studio. Mobile Fidelity's sterling reissue brings it all to fore with unsurpassed realism.

Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed at RTI, this collectable audiophile vinyl version of A Tribute to Jack Johnson joins the ranks of eleven other essential Davis sets given supreme sonic and packaging treatment by Mobile Fidelity. The most prominent difference longtime fans will notice is how much more aggressive and immediate the music sounds, aspects central to the composer's desires. Amazing degrees of instrumental separation and imaging allow you to focus on singular musicians and the roles they play.

Indeed, utilizing wah-wah and distortion, guitarist John McLaughlin comes on here with a nasty edge, slashing style, and vicious streak that allows A Tribute to Jack Johnson finally cross the divide between rock and jazz. Davis puts both feet in the former camp and permanently erasing any gap. In addition to highlighting McLaughlin's ripping performances, Mobile Fidelity's 180g LP showcases the headliner's white-hot trumpet solos like never before. Bristling with exuberance, Davis' high-register passages explode with authority and commanding presence. Around him, a barrage of urgent backbeats, knifing riffs, and three-dimension bass lines emerge amidst an ink-black background.

    Mighty Like A Rose

Just like Spike, Mighty Like A Rose (1991) is an album that twists and turns in its stylistic delivery. Costello hired producers Mitchell Froom and Kevin Killen to aurally shape the album's 14 songs into a well sequenced, intricately layered masterpiece.

Highlights of the album are the opening track The Other Side Of Summer, that made it to a single that performed well on the Rock Charts. All Grown Up and So Like Candy are examples of the genius and wit of Elvis Costello's songwriting.

Universally Hailed 1982 Pop Masterpiece Pairs Costello and Co. With Beatles Engineer Geoff Emerick

Record Topped Village Voices Pazz & Jop Critics Poll In Year of Its Original Release

Lavish Instrumentation, Involved Arrangements, and Piano-Based Melodies Frame Ambitious Songs That Address Domestic Malaise While Coming Off as Upbeat

Half-Speed Mastered from the Original Master Tapes: Imperial Bedroom Joins Mobile Fidelitys Pristine LP Reissues of Costellos My Aim Is True, This Years Model, Armed Forces, Get Happy!!, and Almost Blue

Recorded with famed Beatles engineer Geoff Emerick, Imperial Bedroom stands as Elvis Costello and the Attractions most highly decorated traditional pop album. Boasting sumptuous arrangements, large-scale instrumentation, ambitious layers, Tin Pan Alley melodies, and orchestrated devices, the 1982 record is a testament to studio creativity and ornate production. Amidst the lavish settings beats the heart of Costellos biting, brutal lyrics that confront domestic malaise and sober emotional reflection. Its little wonder the intelligent effort took top honors in the Village Voices Pazz & Jop Critics Poll.

Not that audiences back in the day ever had the privilege of hearing Imperial Bedroom at its maximum potential. Now they can. Half-speed mastered from the original master tapes, Mobile Fidelitys numbered limited edition 180g LP opens up the soundstages, expands the depth, and brings the genius of the grand arrangements into clear focus. In particular, the sound of the piano will have you believe that the 88s are situated right in your room, and never before has Emericks crafty sonic precision been so readily apparent. This is a huge-sounding record that demands full frequency extension and astute separation. Mobile Fidelitys reissue delivers on all fronts. You need to hear this!

Ranked in 2005 by Rolling Stone at #166 on the magazines prestigious list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, Imperial Bedroom overflows with contagious pop, savvy torch, cabaret, chamber, and jazz-influenced fare. If its details you seek, then look no further. With Emericks assistance, each tune is distinguished with painstaking sonic accents, blended rhythms, counterpoint bass lines, dazzling passages, and inventive motifs. Accordions, tremolo guitars, organs, harpsichords, marimbas, horns, and an assortment of other instruments help color the subtly dark canvases. A 40-piece orchestra graces the gorgeous And In Every Home.

Originally intended to be a stripped-down affair, Imperial Bedroom reflects Costellos migration to composing on piano as well as his listening tastes at the time: Billie Holliday, Cole Porter, Frank Sinatra, Debussy. Intricate, expansive, and complex without ever sounding inaccessible, the record includes the now-classic Man Out of Time, Beyond Belief, and Almost Blue, the latter a ballad that Chet Baker included in his live sets until he passed away. In another stroke of brilliance, Costello used the record as an opportunity to address the melancholic changes in both his own personal situation as well as that of England, the songs functioning as smart, sometimes satirical dialogues on issues such as disenchantment, identity, and relationships.

Still considered by many the finest record released in 1982, dont pass up this extraordinary-sounding reissue.

As the bassist and primary songwriter for Brinsley Schwarz, Nick Lowe was one of the catalysts of the pub rock phenomenon in the early 1970s. As the co-founder and house producer at Stiff Records, he would help create the blueprint for the modern indie rock label and usher in British punk and new wave, helming historic recordings for The Damned, Elvis Costello, and The Pretenders.

Here, his landmark second solo album Labour of Lust gets the deluxe reissue treatment, sporting an expanded 12 page booklet with period photos, new essays and artwork by groundbreaking graphic artist Barney Bubbles. The reissue also includes Nick's biggest U.S. hit Cruel To Be Kind, the originally U.K.-only Endless Grey Ribbon and U.S.-only American Squirm plus bonus B-side Basing Street. Re-mastered from the original master tapes, Elvis Costello's soulful album Get Happy!! is now presented as a 2LP set (original was 1LP) on 180 gram vinyl. This soul -influenced LP shows how prolific and brilliant Costello is. Get Happy!! hit #11 on the Billboard 200.

Elvis Costello wasn't in a happy place when he began writing Goodbye Cruel World. His marriage collapsed between the record's start and finish. He was also dealing with what he deems the dreadful 80s-a period in which the importance of videos trumped musical merit, the government in his native England engaged in controversial conflicts, and nuclear threats hovered over daily life like a black cloud. What possible good came out of the age? A smart batch of songs that stands up to many of the singer-songwriter's better-known works and an underrated record that now sounds better than ever.
