Songs In A Transit Wind (On Sale) (DIscontinued)

ELLIOTT was a band from Lousiville, Kentucky, that released four albums and several 7"s in their eight-year existence. This LP is a collection of their debut 7", In Transit, released in 1997 on Initial Records, along with their pair of 7"s recorded in between their first two albums (U.S. Songs and False Cathedrals). These two records, If They Do 7"
(Initial Records) and Will You (Revelation Records) have long since been out of print. Rounding out this collection of eight songs are two instrumental tracks that were recorded during this period. One was previously on the CDEP version of the If They Do release while the other, "Orphalese", has never been released on any format.

    Mic City Sons

The third and final album by Heatmiser, a band led by Elliott Smith and Hampshire College buddy Neil Gust, released in 1996 on Caroline Records, is hailed by all as their best effort. Unfortunately, the record was released as the band was breaking up.

The duo of Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf, that worked on both Elliott Smith solo albums for DreamWorks (XO and Figure 8), helped produce and record Mic City Sons. A true indie-rock classic that still sounds good today: if you are a fan of Elliott Smith you need this one as well. Here on 180 gram vinyl.

    Sing Elliott Smith

The title is about as self-explanatory as could be: 'Seth Avett & Jessica Lea
Mayfield sing Elliott Smith.' 12 songs originally written by the acclaimed and wellloved
Smith, performed by 2 artists, currently known for their contributions to the
indie folk rock landscape. The recordings are, in many cases, defined by bare
instrumentation, driven by a simple yet bold vocal delivery, the depth of feeling
    complimenting that of the subject matter. This album is an obvious labor of love;
a comment based on the genuine reverence which Avett and Mayfield clearly
hold for Smith. At times, the songs feel light as a feather, while in others, thematically
leaden with heartache, they are given a deep breath, a different dimension,
a new color. In modern fashion, melodies intensely whispered by Elliott Smith
are sung in a harmonious way, akin to the folk aesthetic of Gillian Welch and

    Roman Candle

Kill Rock Stars is proud to re-issue Roman Candle, Elliott Smith's first solo album, originally released on Portland's Cavity Search Records in 1994. The album has now been remastered for the re-release by Roger Seibel (SAE) and Larry Crane, editor of Tape Op Magazine and archivist for Elliott's family. Originally released in very limited LP quantity, this is the first time that Roman Candle is widely available on both standard and 180g vinyl.

Roman Candle had quite an impact on Slim Moon, Kill Rock Stars' founder: In 1994, I had been asked to be on this five-person solo-act tour called Pop Chord with Tammy Watson, Carrie Akre, Sean Croghan and Elliott Smith. The first night at the Crocodile in Seattle, I didn't pay too much attention and people talked all through Elliott's set. Sean Croghan got up next and said all of you people who just talked through Elliott's set are bummed because you just missed something very, very special. The next night of the tour, at The Bottom Of The Hill in San Francisco, I listened very closely to Elliott's set, and it was basically one of those life changing moments. Instead of watching the rest of the performers, I went out to the tour van and popped Roman Candle into the player, and listened to it on endless repeat for the rest of the evening and beyond. It completely blew my mind. I have never heard music as heart wrenchingly, gut-checkingly honest, intimate, and wise before or since.

    New Moon

I kept recording more songs with no regard whether or not they were gonna be on anything. That's what I'm used to doing, recording all the time and not going, 'What should I record for this record?' Usually I put out whatever happened in the last six months. With this, I had way too many songs and no mechanism for picking between them.
Elliott Smith, Tape Op Magazine, 1996, on finishing Either/Or.

Arguably the most gifted song-writer of his generation, Elliott Smith produced a large body of work that includes five solo albums, as well as From a Basement on the Hill (2004), a collection of songs completed before his death in 2003. On May 8, 2007, Kill Rock Stars will release a double CD of music by Elliott Smith entitled New Moon. The album contains 24 songs recorded between 1994-1997, a prolific time in Smith's career, when he recorded his self-titled album and Either/Or (both also released by Kill Rock Stars). Like his other work, New Moon reflects the power of Smith's ability to integrate rich, melodic music with poetic, multi-layered lyrics. Only three songs have seen prior release all on compilations most extremely limited runs.

The final mixing for New Moon was done by Larry Crane, who is also the archivist for the estate of Elliott Smith. A significant portion of proceeds from the album sales will go directly to Outside In, a Portland-based social service organization dedicated to providing diverse services for homeless youth and low-income adults.

    The Cookbook (Pre-Order)

With The Cookbook, the innovative Missy Elliott proves to the masses she is a musical mad scientist whose artistic abilities are unparalleled and without peer. Elliott is a quadruple threat: rapper, singer, songwriter and producer; add that to her woman-empowered lyrics and Missy's ability to be a musical and mental role model is inarguable. As a producer, Missy Elliott knows how to build a great project by incorporating the best talent available, an easy task since so many want to work with her. Not surprisingly, The Cookbook is filled with a world-class guest list.

That very large list includes American Idol winner Fantasia , cRunk&B queen Ciara , old-school rapper Slick Rick , dancehall sensation M.I.A. (on the drumline-heavy Bad Man) and the current queen of soul, Mary J. Blige . In a reversal of roles, My Struggles finds Missy singing Ya'll don't really know my life, y'all don't really know my struggles while Mary J. raps over a sample of herself from What's The 411. One unexpected surprise is Missy sings out more than on previous releases. The bare-bones Remember When is a definite standout, a 70's-inspired slow jam highlighted by her honest lyrics, sweet falsetto and jazz-affected tones. The beautiful melancholy of Teary Eyed is another standout, an amen-inducing testament to a relationship gone wrong and the beginning of the healing process.

To hear Missy sing with full rawness and no bravado is a further testament to her talents and will likely bring an even larger audience into her fold. - Denise Sheppard

    Animals In The Dark

The songs on this Anti debut sound cultivated from the fertile, treacherous Mississippi mud that surrounds William Elliott Whitmore. Whitmore's ability to balance contrasts; suffering and humor, truth and fancy, the literary and the earthy, places him in a tradition that has drawn young dissidents to folk music since before Dylan's time. With two albums behind him featuring his stunning voice, a powerful instrument that can recall Leadbelly and Otis Redding within the same song, and traditional banjo and guitar, Whitmore has made a name for himself in both the punk and roots communities.

    Field Songs

On his forthcoming new album Field Songs, Iowa troubadour William Elliott Whitmore documents a vanishing American landscape with all the heartfelt soul and quiet fury one could hope for. He utilizes a powerful singing voice beyond his years and a stark dramatic sound rooted in bluegrass, blues and folk protest music. The new songs vividly evoke a life of struggle, humble resilience and family bond inspired by life on his familys farm along the Mississippi River.

Whitmore has made a name for himself both within the punk movement, where his populism and sincerity resonate with alienated urban kids, and the roots community, where writers like Andy Downing of the Chicago Tribune have placed him within the new pastoralism of Bon Iver and the Fleet Foxes.

    Da Real World (Pre-Order)

Throughout the entirety of Da Real World, Missy Elliott is determined to redefine the meaning of the negative, female-targeted b-word (the album was originally going to be titled She's a Bitch). Inverting the term to represent a woman who knows what she wants, Missy exhibits her new attitude by aggressively showcasing her strong songwriting skills and superb vocal talents.

Her lyrics are relatively simple, but perfectly complement the syncopated orchestrations of the often-imitated, never-duplicated producer Timbaland. Climactic strings dance around the voices of Missy, Nicole, and Outkast's Big Boi on All N My Grill and on Busa Rhyme a punctuating tone accentuates the dark confessions of featured MC Eminem. A plethora of guests pepper Da Real World, but the multifaceted Missy is never outshone. -Celine Wong

To that end, Under Construction bubbles over with a combination of ridiculously slamming beats and clever old-school references--not to mention a slew of guest stars. Based on the rhyme schematic from UTFO's Roxanne Roxanne and featuring Ms. Jade's tight-laced drawl, Funky Fresh Dressed draws on several classics, including the Beasties' Paul Revere. Missy croons and Jay-Z namedrops his way through the loose-limbed Back in the Day. Ludacris injects some new jack Southern flavor into the sinuous anti-hater's anthem, Gossip Folks. Work It features a catchy chorus and an absolutely insane Timbaland track.

As is to be expected, Aaliyah's presence looms large over the proceedings, especially on the classic Misdemeanor-style hip-hop and R&B hybrid, Nothing out There for Me. Missy's rap adlibs play second fiddle to the song's lush vocals, as BeyoncÉ fills the diva role previously occupied by the late, great Aaliyah. -Rebecca Levine

    Miss E...So Addictive (Pre-Order)

After a long winter of discontent, So Addictive finds Missy Elliott hoping to initiate hip-hop's summer of love. Miss E's third album is dosed with feel-good flavor and has more guests than the VIP section of the hippest hip-hop hot spot. Buddies Method Man and Redman bark across the bridge of Dog in Heat's canine funk. Jay-Z and Ludacris feature on two different versions of One Minute Man's scathing soul. Synths tweak and creak in rhythm as Missy unleashes a dreamy diss of those hopeless suitors who unload their cargo before they've sparked her ignition. Take Away features Pony man Ginuwine on a hypnotic slow-burner heavily reminiscent of Art of Noise's Moments in Love.

When left to her own devices, as she is on Lick Shots (which jangles like Django Reinhardt on downers), Missy comes on like Schooly D, a fearless, female gangsta licking shots against anyone who dares cross her. On Scream a.k.a. Itchin' she breaks into a soprano. A 4/4 stomp is stamped indelibly across the ecstasy-holler song 4 My People (featuring Eve). Overall, it feels as if producer Timbaland has muted his experimental leanings on this outing with his favorite muse in favor of submersible club tracks. Musically, the bhangra beat bop of Get Ur Freak On is the standout. The spiral timing of Whatcha Gon' Do, the fret-skipping Slap! Slap Slap! (featuring Da Brat), and the sunken, drunken funk of the not-so-subtle X-hex X-Tasy are tied at a close second. -Chris Campion

    Radium Death

Known for the sparse, haunting qualities of his mostly solo recordings of what he refers to as roots-folk music, in which his husky voice is often accompanied by little more than a banjo or acoustic guitar, William Elliott Whitmore sought to add some new pitches to his bullpen for his new ANTI- release Radium Death. I purposefully went into it wanting to make a little bit of a departure, sonically, using an electric guitar a little bit more and adding more instrumentation, more full-band type stuff, says Whitmore. I wanted to switch it up a little bit and plug in to see what that felt like. I was reading a lot about the so-called 'radium girls' of the early 1900's, these assembly lines of women painting watch dials with radium to make them glow in the dark, he says, detailing how the workers would lick the tips of their paintbrushes to get them pointy while dipping them repeatedly into the chemical substance before it was known to be dangerous. So, in my mind 'radium death' came to represent something that you're told is good for you-maybe by a higher power-but really is killing you. It represents those lies that are told, and how we can protect ourselves against them. The songs assembled, while not a concept album, present a cohesive look into those recurring Whitmore themes of respect, protection, sustenance and survival. The blazing (even by WEW standards) opener, Healing To Do, pulls no punches, kicking in immediately with the rhythmic shuffle of a full band, an organ, and Whitmore's upbeat rasp. The pace continues with songs like Trouble in Your Heart, 1000 Deaths and Don't Strike Me Down, preaching patient hope, rebirth, renewal, and revolt over stomping drums, acoustic strumming and even an electric guitar solo.
