    Ben Webster And Sweets Edison

Mastered by Bernie Grundman from the Original Analog Master Tapes! Only 2500 Numbered Limited Edition Copies Worldwide!

The two jazz giants Ben Webster and Harry Sweets Edison had long wanted to record an album together, and in 1962, they did. Although associated with two different orchestras (Edison was with Basie and Webster was with Ellington), these two swing kings found that they had a lot in common.

This album features both horn men on three medium tempo blues, Better Go, Kitty, and Did You Call Her Today. Other than this, Webster gets two tenor features, contributing absolutely luscious solos on both How Long Has This Been Going On, and My Romance. After listening to these songs, there can be no doubt that Webster is one of the best balladeers jazz has ever produced. Edison gets his moment in the sun too. On the album closer, Sweets plays a wonderful, even fairly modern sounding, rendition of Embraceable You using a Harmon mute. The ballads, enhanced by the wonderful harmonic sense of pianist Hank Jones, are the highlight of this release, and show both Webster and Sweets' unbeatable melodic sense.

Ben Webster was considered to be on of the three most important 'swing tenors' along with Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young. Known by some as The Brute, he had a tough, raspy and brutal tone on stompes but could deliver warmth and sentiment on softer ballads. Trumpeter Harry Sweets Edison spent his early childhood in Kentucky where he was introduced to music by his uncle. After moving back to his hometown of Columbus, Ohio at the age of 12, he began playing the trumpet with local bands, eventually landing a spot with the Count Basie Orchestra.

Tenor-saxophonist Ben Webster and trumpeter Harry Sweets Edison, both veterans of the swing era (although associated with different orchestras), had long wanted to record a full album together. The results, a swinging quintet set with pianist Hank Jones, bassist George Duvivier and drummer Clarence Johnston, are quite rewarding. There are two ballad features for the tenor (How Long Has This Been Going on and a beautiful version of My Romance) and one for Edison (Embraceable You) along with three medium-tempo collaborations. Nothing unexpected occurs but the melodic music is quite enjoyable. - Scott Yanow, Allmusic.com

At a time when some are steering jazz up a rather shallow third stream and others are busy digging up its roots, Webster and Edison are only motivated by the sheer love of playing.

What we can do in 20 years is listen to a new young singer - pianist and say she reminds us of the legendary Diana Krall. - Village Voice

Michael Fremer of www.musicangle.com and Jeff Dorgay of TONEAudio had this to say about the original ORG 33 1/3rpm version:

If I had to have one smoky female vocal recording in my record collection, the ORG version of All For You would be it. - JD

    Black

Dierks Bentley has announced the details for his upcoming eighth studio album, Black. The follow-up to his acclaimed Riser is slated to drop in 2016.

The new album reunites the core creative team from Riser, including producer Ross Copperman and executive producer Arturo Buenahora, Jr. Riser set a new high-water mark for Bentley, earning him Grammy, CMA and ACM nominations and putting him in the headlining slot in arenas across the country. Black sees Bentley continuing to push himself creatively, expanding his sonic palette to include influences that "flourish on the edge of arena rock," according to a press release.

Black is a very personal album, taking its title from Bentley's wife Cassidy's maiden name, but it's intended to tell a universal story of "breakups, hookups, mess-ups and everything in between, shining a light on the things that happen after the sun goes down."

"It's a relationship album that covers the ups and downs of the journey and ends with some self-realization and evolvement," Bentley states. "The song 'Black' helps set all of that in motion at the top of the album by guiding you into the darkness and the shadows of the night. The same guy who sings 'Somewhere On a Beach' winds up growing and having enough perspective to sing something introspective like 'Different for Girls.' By the last song, he's taking a look back on love and life."

Black features more input from the female perspective than any previous Bentley album, including appearances from Maren Morris, Elle King, Natalie Hemby, Hillary Lindsey and Jessi Alexander.

"Having a female perspective on this record really made the album more than just music," Bentley says. "It makes it a conversation between a guy and a girl. Sometimes it's harmonious and sometimes it's two people clashing, but it's always there."

The album also features a guest shot from Trombone Shorty. Black is set for release on Capitol Records Nashville.

For this collection of songs of prayer, Gary Karr performs with Harmon Lewis on organ. Selections from Mozart, Schubert, Bizet, and more are represented on this release.

The soulful sound of the doublebass with organ is perfectly suited for this kind of meditative music. The performance is so absorbing that it demands the listener's full attention. This music was so successful with this combination of instruments that the Karr/Lewis Duo planned to release more CDs of this spiritual nature.

    Faure Requiem

From 1957 to 1974 Sir David Willcocks held the post for which he is probably best known, Director of Music at King's College, Cambridge. He made numerous recordings with the college choir, of which the FaurÉ Requiem is probably the most admired and toured extensively with the choir, giving concerts worldwide, as well as garnering further acclaim internationally through television and radio appearances. He held this and other academic positions at Cambridge until the 1970s when he accepted the post of director of the Royal College of Music. Holst The Planets

Zubin Mehta conducts the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra for this audiophile recording of Holst's The Planets.

The scoring of the Planets is rich and extravagant (quadruple wood-wind, enormous brass and a percussion section requiring three players, not to mention such exotic additions as bass flute, bass tuba and organ) and yet the sound is always clear and transparent. There are two other ingredients to add to this formula - melodic invention and a great sense of rhythm. Holst had these in plenty. If his methods seemed novel during his life-time they have become commonplace since - but never dull.

The suite opens with Mars, the Bringer of War with its relentless, hammering five four rhythm. The movement is in simple ternary form. Brass dominates in the tremendous build-up and release of forces....

Venus, the Bringer of Peace is also the goddess of love and Holst allows his music more sensuality than elsewhere. Gone are the harsh pounding rhythm and snarling brass. They are replaced by serenity and coolness...

Mercury, the Winged Messenger is a symphonic scherzo of unparalleled lightness and volatility. The effect is obtained by mixing tonalities and time signatures. The distant keys of B flat and E are juxtaposed and there is a constant mixture of triple and duple time...

Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity comes as a contrast to the vapid Mercury, with its boisterous dances and broad hymn tune...The king of gods would surely have been pleased with such a regal anthem...

Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age is Holst at his deepest and most intensely personal. It is an excursion into cold and dreary open spaces so often explored right up to the end of his life. The syncopated oscillations between two dissonant chords seem to be borrowed from Schoenberg while the slow melody of the double basses surely epitomizes senescence itself...

Uranus, the Magician: Trumpets and trombones blare out a portentous invocation, echoed by tubas and timpani. Bassoons are next on the scene to establish the piece's galumphing 6/4 gate...

Neptune, the Mystic: This is real music of the stars - free from all earthly sentiment. It is a vision of remote beauty and ideal perfection. Silvery sounds unfold yet without the remotest suggestion of a theme to disturb the spiritual concentration. There is constant shifting of harmony and changing tone colour. The icy tinkling of celesta and glockenspiel and the wordless, disembodied female chorus which floats over and around the closing pages were later (some 35 years later) to find their way into Vaughan Williams' Sinfonia Antarctica. There is, and can be, no end to this music - it fades away but cannot die: it is as infinite as space itself and as intangible as the most distant parts of the subconscious. - from liner notes

    Live In Berlin

Jocelyn B. Smith has uplifted audiences throughout Germany with her energetic and expressive voice. Born and raised in New York City, after several tours as a back-up singer for other accomplished artists, Smith made her home in Berlin, Germany. The famous Berlin jazz club Quasimodo became her musical home where she performed regularly to packed houses for more than a decade. Her sophisticated vocal ability and broad musical interests have led Smith to experiment with various musical styles, including funk rock, soul ballads, chansons, and big band jazz. She sang Circle of Life, the title song on the German version of Disney's movie Lion King, whose soundtrack won a gold record in Germany. One of the main German news TV shows heute-Journal called her probably the most powerful voice of Germany. For her album Blue Lights & Nylons, which blended world-music with interpretations of well-known tunes by George Gershwin and Kurt Weill, Smith was nominated for the German Jazz Award in 2000.

This is her first live album and was recorded at the Quasimodo-released in 1997. There is a special spiritual presence in Jocelyn's music on this recording. It was taped just 2 weeks before the birth of her first child.

Roy Gaines is the greatest living blues guitarist that you probably don't know anything about. Not only is Mr. Gaines a sizzling blues guitarist, he also possesses one of the most magnificent blues voices around. The real tragedy is that until very recently this supremely talented musician was almost forgotten by blues fans in the U.S.

Born in Houston in 1937, Roy started playing the guitar as a teenager and soon developed a reputation as an instrumental prodigy. By fourteen, he was actually being invited on stage to play with the legendary T-Bone Walker during the latter's live gigs in Houston and became known as T-Bone Jr. By his early 20s, Roy was playing and recording with Roy Milton's band in LA but returned to Houston to join the Duke / Peacock blues label as a full time session guitarist on such seminal blues recordings as Bobby Bland's It's My Life Baby and Junior Parker's Driving Me Mad. He was also the featured guitarist on a whole bunch of singles recorded by Big Mama Thorton for the same label.

After going on the road with Joe Turner, Roy joined forces with the blues great, Chuck Willis. Roy stayed with Willis until the latter passed away in the late 50's. He then moved to NYC and recorded with Jimmy Rushing, as well as doing a jazz album with Coleman Hawkins on Prestige. Roy returned to LA and during the 60s became one of the city's leading session guitarists, playing with the Crusaders, Earl Grant, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder as well as continuing his pure blues work with the likes of Bobby Bland, Albert King and Lightning Hopkins for the Jewel label.

The focus of this album is on the music and spirit of the late and very great T-Bone Walker, Roy's earliest mentor and inspiration as a guitar player. T-Bone's body of work includes such timeless blues standards as Stormy Monday, Dreamgirl, West Side Baby, T-Bone Blues and I'm in An Awful Mood and many others. This album focuses on the classic tunes and styles from the period of the 40s and 50s.

The LP includes an acoustic version of Stormy Monday and House of Gold as a bonus 45rpm supercut. Produced by Joe Harley and recorded at Ocean Way Studios in Sherman Oaks, CA. by engineer Mike Ross. All mastering was done from the original master tapes by Bernie Grundman. All LPs are plated and pressed by RTI, CA.

In order to achieve the BEST possible sound ORG has cut The Look Of Love on 4 sides and at 45rpm to allow the maximum cutting level. This gives the record the best signal to noise ratio, better dynamics, less inner groove distortion and better overall sound!

From the luxurious opening chords of the first track, even before Diana Krall has sung a single beautiful note, The Look of Love, will have you hooked. After winning a Best Jazz Vocal Performance Grammy for 1999's platinum-selling When I Look in Your Eyes, Diana Krall delivers her best album yet - a lush, cinematic collection of ballads and bossa nova tunes. Featuring the London Symphony Orchestra arranged and conducted by the legendary Claus Ogerman, The Look of Love brings to mind such classic Frank Sinatra albums as In the Wee Small Hours and Only The Lonely. These elegant piano solos, the sensual vocals, and the wickedly modern sense of humor are, inimitably, all Diana Krall.

The Look of Love is the fifth album by Diana Krall in a row that Tommy LiPuma, Verve Music Group Chairman, produced. LiPuma is also known for his work with Barbra Streisand, Miles Davis, Joao Gilberto, Natalie Cole and Shirley Horn. Regarding Claus Ogerman, Diana Krall said that, together with Johnny Mandel, he has been her favorite arranger/composer since she was seventeen. Ogerman had an important role on albums recorded by Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Ogerman also had been working for years together with LiPuma, for the first time on George Benson's outstanding album Breezin'. Since Claus Ogerman featuring Michael Brecker in 1990, the two had gone separate ways. But when Diana Krall was on tour in Munich, LiPuma arranged for her to have lunch with Ogerman. That is how the pianist/singer, the arranger/composer and the producer began to work on a common project: The Look of Love.

Diana's songs were arranged by Claus Ogerman who also conducts the London Symphony Orchestra. The Look of Love gives an impression of unity despite the fact that it contains material from a lot of different sources: e.g. Cry Me A River by Julie London, Love Letters by Nat King Cole and jazz-standards such as Dancing in the Dark by Arthur Schwartz (music)/Howard Dietz (text), I Remember You by Victor Scherzinger/John Mercer and 'S Wonderful by George and Ira Gershwin.
