The ElementsThe Elements is an album by American saxophonist Joe Henderson, originally released in 1973 on Milestone.
1970 began a decade of discovery for Joe Henderson; a time to set aside the post-bop instrumentation and repertoire he was identified with and branch out into other realms. One of the most successful and challenging of these efforts that the Milestone label documented was the present four-part improvisation on the basic themes of Fire, Air, Water and Earth.
Assisting the tenor saxophonist was a group of sympathetic explorers--Alice Coltrane on piano and harp, violin original Michael White, bass giant Charlie Haden, and the multifaceted percussionist Kenneth Nash.
Latin American, Indian, and Native American strains enter the mix as Henderson applies the heat and mercurial invention of his more conventional work to these open-ended settings. While the music is enhanced with overdubbing in spots, the true magic of The Elements emanates from the musicians' collective genius at listening and responding to each other.1. Fire

UNIM-ROU-7515xRobert Plant/Alison Krauss
Raising SandFor Alison Krauss, musical collaboration has been a way of life. Her latest musical collaboration, Raising Sand, is an astonishing album recorded in tandem with rock vocalist and songwriter Robert Plant. Raising Sand is their first recorded endeavor, and will prove revelatory to fans and the media on two counts: first that it happened at all, and, more importantly, that it is as successful and illuminating as it is.
From its embryonic, conceptual stages well before any music materialized the mere idea of Raising Sand held infinite fascination for both its creators and those around them. As word spread of an impending musical collaboration between Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, imaginations ran wild. Two artists, each at the pinnacle of their respective pantheons, Robert and Alison have seemingly little in common. But just below the surface, an elemental understanding flowed between them, waiting to be tapped...
Under the careful sonic stewardship of producer T Bone Burnett, Raising Sand is pitched three steps beyond some cosmic collision of early urban blues, spacious West Texas country, and the unrealized potential of the folk-rock revolution. Shockingly evocative, it is an album that uncovers popular musics elemental roots while sounding effortlessly, breathtakingly modern. Despite hailing from distinctly different backgrounds, Plant and Krauss share a maverick spirit and willingness to extend the boundaries of their respective genres. Raising Sand finds Plant and Krauss functioning as sympathetic equals: creating a powerful new sound from both their common musical ground and their unrivaled sense of empathy.1. Rich Woman

CoexistAnyone expecting a dense pop production won't find it in Angels, a ballad which feels a bit like an introduction to a more lavish song; if past hits like Crystalised were spare, then Angels is positively barren. Opening, characteristically enough, with a clean but woozy guitar, the new song doesn't get much more bombastic from there: A few snare taps and a low rumble join the most elemental guitar lines as the few adornments for Romy Madley Croft's naked expressions of devotion.
You move through the room, like breathing was easy, she sings, adding, If someone believed me, they would be as in love with you as I am. A gentle love song made all the more disarming for its simplicity, Angels ratchets up the tension using the fewest possible ingredients.1. Angels

Arguably one of the most groundbreaking and influential bands in the metal realm, ATHEIST combined a death metal attack with virtuosic level of playing. This union would create a style of forward thinking, progressive metal that would soon become the benchmark for many influential metal bands (DEATH, CYNIC, PESTILENCE, etc.).
'Elements' was once the final chapter in the story of a band many years ahead of its time. Its complex arrangements fused disparate sounds such as delicate jazz, deep funk grooves, latin rhythms, flamenco guitar stylings, and samba interludes with blistering metal chops to create music that confused as many as it pleased. Once a fitting swansong for the unique entity that ATHEIST had become, 'Elements' was almost equally regaled and reviled for the ambitious ideas it put into motion. In the years since the band split Elements has been recognized as a crucial piece of ATHEIST history and a marker for the wider acceptance for heavy, dynamic, progressive metal.

Natural Elements (Speakers Corner)In the western world, the word shakti is taken to mean creative intelligence, beauty and strength. Guitar marvel John McLaughlin, who collaborated with the unique Mahavishnu Orchestra to tell the world of his conversion to Hinduism, created music past comparison with Shakti. Despite the frenzy of mass oriental pilgrimages, it was still unusual that McLaughlin's ensemble was made up totally of musicians from India.
As the title of the third and last album - Natural Elements - suggests, all the participants work with body and soul and make no use of electronic equipment that was so popular in the Seventies. The very real natural energy, which emanates from the flow of melodies and rhythms from both western and eastern musical sources, fires all the musicians. And it is completely intentional that a cheerful fiddle tune, which might well be heard in the Emerald Isle, is joined by plopping volleys of sound on the tabla, inviting one to dance, or that dampened mariachi jubilation appears to be enveloped in the meditative atmosphere of a temple.
The short, light and cheerful pieces on this LP provide easy listening and offer an ideal insight into the world of Shakti. These natural sounds, far from time and space, are still enjoyed today - as is proved by the presence of a large audience at the concert Remember Shakti, in which John McLaughlin and Zakir Hussain celebrated their 40-year spiritual ties.

About Speakers Corner
At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.
During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.
A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.
We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.
We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.
To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.1. Mind Ecology

The musicians took an elemental approach to recording, capturing the organic sounds of their instruments before treating them with various effects. These Changing Skies (Awaiting Repress)The five members of Elephant Revival share a deep commitment to certain ideals: community, recognizing one's place in the flow of the natural world, harmony. Holding on to those ideals in the midst of heady career growth and strong individual
creative forces could be difficult, but they weather these storms with aplomb, and in doing so, have produced their best album to date. It is a document about striving for transcendence under These Changing Skies which was recorded at legendary
Bear Creek Studio in Woodinville, WA and was produced and mixed by Ryan Hadlock (The Lumineers, Brandi Carlile, The Walkmen).
Elephant Revival formed on the banks of Spring Creek in Tahlequah, Oklahoma and then relocated to Nederland, Colorado in fall of 2006. They loved one another's sense of shared values and the way that their disparate musical influences began to form a more cohesive tapestry the more they played together.

Keep An Eye OutTable of the Elements continues to celebrate its 15th anniversary with the tenth installment in its Guitar Series Vols. 3 & 4. Its a 12xLP romp of deviant fretnoise by some of experimental musics most prominent players, including Christian Fennesz, Thurston Moore and Sunn O)))s Stephen OMalley.
Sunn O))) founder Stephen OMalley summons a mesmerizing drone, absorbing the listener into an aural tar pit of deep, inexorable oblivion. He wears a cloak of post-metal allegiances with behemoths like Earth, but beneath that, there is a vibrant body of work that owes as much to the heady minimalism of Tony Conrad and Steve Reich. Constantly pushing at the extremes of volume and duration, OMalleys sound is a physical phenomenon, infused with an intimidating power and possessing, at its core, an oddly meditative tranquility.1. AngelOn their third LP Angel it is clear that Pure X have, and always have had, an uncompromising musical vision. Over the course of each full-length the band has tirelessly reinvented themselves, opting to stay true to their own sensibilities rather than placate expectations or regurgitate a successful sound. After wooing both critics and audiences alike with their seductive, submerged-in-reverberation debut Pleasure the band pulled an about-face on their sophomore album Crawling Up the Stairs, crafting a follow up that emphasized textural clarity and raw emotionality over its predecessor's intoxicating soundscapes. Now on their third LP, and first as a quartet, the internal upheaval of C.U.T.S. has fully dissipated and given way to a new found serenity, a calm which finds the band in its most potent, refined, and elemental form yet.1. Beyond focusing attention on his soloing prowess, it is about recapturing the spirit of the early blues, where the guitar was front and center, fairly leaping out of the speakers. 'A lot of my earlier influences have been coming to the surface, like Robert Johnson, and Howlin' Wolf,' he reports. 'I have been appreciating how raw and unrefined that stuff is. 'Preparations' is the first record to be released on Tri Angle by Fis. Based in Wellington, New Zealand, Fis has steadily been building a name for himself on the underground as a producer to keep an eye on. Having already put out a number of very limited edition and very well received releases through a handful of drum and bass oriented labels, 'Preparations' finds Fis at a point in his music making career where he's ready to be introduced to a wider audience and confirm why websites like Resident Advisor have had things like this to say about him in the past; 'A producer that has suddenly appeared, rather fully-formed, doing something completely individual, sounding like absolutely no one else.' It's pretty difficult to explain exactly what Fis sounds like. Drawing upon a rich history of New Zealand customs and periods of heavy meditation for inspiration, Fis's tracks have the ability to completely disorientate and absorb the listener, creating rhythms that constantly seem to be cannibalizing one another. 'Preparations' feels forward thinking in the extreme and yet entirely elemental and strangely ancient.1. Magister Nunns

Agaetis ByrjunReykjavík-based noise quartet Sigur Rós are the biggest band in their native Iceland, which should say much, much more about the collective insanity of that earthquake-ridden, blizzard-beaten crag of an island than anything to do with Sigur Rós's sound. But in their music, Sigur Rós reflect all the breathtaking glory of the Icelandic wastes--a fairy-tale explosion of unhinged elemental majesty that's finally crystallized here, their debut European release. Poised somewhere between the haunting soundscapes of Labradford and the lilting Celtic falsetto of Enya, Agaetis Byrjun is a truly breathtaking listen. Frontman Jon Por Birgisson sings in a language that Sigur Rós dub Hopelandic--an otherworldly mutation of Icelandic, sung in the falsetto cadence of angels; similarly, he plays his guitar with a violin bow, opening the floodgates for brilliant waves of feedback. And while it's the opening Svefn-G-Englar that's Sigur Rós' moment to date, there's far more that they have to offer; listen to the pomp and flourish of a full orchestra on Flugufrelsarinn, or the awe-inspiring near-religious mantra of Ny Batteri.LP 1

Bound By The BluesSonny Landreth's new album Bound By The Blues marks a return to the slide
guitarist's musical roots. It presents a bold, big-sounding collection of
recordings that climb to stratospheric heights of jazz informed improvisation,
the best of classic rock, and inevitably remain deeply attached to the elemental
emotional and compositional structures that are at the blues' historic core.
Bound By The Blues is a powerful tribute to the durability and flexibility of the
genre, and to his own creative vision. Sonny name-checks Jimi Hendrix, Muddy
Waters and some of Landreth's other musical heroes along the way. He also
pays homage to fellow slide guitarist Johnny Winter, with the instrumental
"Firebird Blues." He recreates some amazing covers "Walkin' Blues" by Robert
Johnson, and "Dust My Broom" by Elmore James.

A Place Called BadWith a sound that was swampy, primal and modernurban
all at once-as much in the tradition of rock n'
roll and punk rock as it was a rejection of those things,
the Scientists' formula was as universal as it was specific
to their own experience. The themes of getting wasted,
driving around in hotted-up cars, being trapped in crap
jobs, and paranoia were their subject matter. Machine
throb bass and drums with jagged car-wreck guitars were
their modus operandi. Fitting into no place or time they
spurned all but the most rudimentary and elemental of
rock structures to create a sound all their own.
"The Scientists proved to me that rock 'n' roll could be
played by gentlemen in fine silk shirts half unbuttoned
and still be dirty, cool and real."
"They wrote fantastic singles and looked like they just
crawled out of the ooze. What more could you ask for?"
