Be Kind To A Man When He's DownDrawing from the vast spectrum of traditional American country and blues music from the 1920s and early '30s, Eden & Johns East River String Band (Eden Brower & John Heneghan) create some of the most authentic sounding renditions of these songs today.
Their fourth release, Be Kind To A Man When He's Down, contains songs from Frank Stokes, Pink Anderson, Big Chief Henry's String Band and many more. It features special guests Robert Crumb (underground comic legend, Cheap Suit Serenaders) on mandolin, Dom Flemons (Carolina Chocolate Drops) on guitar and old-time music legend Pat Conte (Canebreak Rattlers, Otis Brothers) on fiddle, banjo, guitar, harmonica and vocals. It features an amazing cover by Crumb as did their last two records, Drunken Barrel House Blues and Some Cold Rainy Day.
Eden and John's East River String Band cover black country blues from the 78-rpm era with crisp fervor and a natural flair that suggests loving study and a respect for the hard lives and flight for joy on the original records. - David Fricke/Rolling Stone1. Gonna Tip Out Tonight

Some Cold Rainy DayEden & John's East River String Band are a contemporary acoustic duo that play country/blues classics from the 1920s and 1930s. The band consists of Eden Brower on ukulele and vocals with John Heneghan on guitar and vocals, including special guest Terry Waldo (legendary ragtime piano player who has recorded and toured with Leon Redbone and Woody Allen).
The duo try to keep alive the rural music tradition that existed before the Great Depression of the '30s, playing primarily country blues covers including classics by such greats as Skip James, Mississippi John Hurt, Lottie Kimbrough and Blind Lemon Jefferson.
Some Cold Rainy Day is by far one of the most enjoyable contemporary recordings of early pre-war blues music I have ever heard. Eden and John stay true to the original arrangements and vocals that these songs had when they were first released. I would call this a MUST-own for fans young and old of blues music and even those who want a modern introduction to the great old music of the 1920s and 1930s. PLEASE NOTE: Crumb not only did the cover for this album; he loves the music on it, too. The Bonding (Awaiting Repress)It's now more than a decade since Edenbridge first created a stir with the launch of their debut Sunrise In Eden back in 2000. What presented itself as a young but already immensely talented band has evolved into one of the genre's most independent acts. Their latest album The Bonding sees the group from Austria
underline their exceptional status in melodic metal and puts an end to their creative hiatus of almost three difficult years. "We had to come to terms with a number of personal setbacks, which is why the production of the album took longer than originally scheduled," explains guitarist and main songwriter Lanvall, who among other things suffered the loss of his father due to suicide. In addition, Edenbridge underwent an unexpected line-up change: bassist Simon Holzknecht had to be replaced by Wolfgang Rothbauer (Disbelief, Zombie Inc.).LP1

World's Not Worth ItColored Vinyl
The World's Not Worth It sees Gavan Kearney working with a handpicked cast of collaborators - including long-time muse Moonswift, Porcupine Tree's Steven Wilson, Eden House vocalist Amandine Ferrari and Use of Ashes guitarist Maarten Scherrenburg (on drums) - to create a blissful world of unconventional, yet instantly beguiling compositions. whilst still working within a by now familiar territory delineated by folk, ambient and progressive rock at a chambermusical volume, elements from the world of classical music are featured more prominently than ever, taking the project in a new direction: Kearney's reverence for the groundbreaking inventions of Romantic composers Ravel, Debussy and theosophic genius Alexander Scriabin shows through in extended solo-piano and guitar passages, adventurous chord progressions as well as a tender clarinet-solo on Events in a Skyline. Just like Scriabin would take the harmonic system to its limits, these pieces explore the outer limits of the song format, working with controlled stylistic collisions rather than a schematic chorus/refrain approach - such as on under the stares, which explores what'd happen "if Bach bumped into Messiaen".

Paradise is There: The New Tigerlily RecordingsNatalie Merchant's career began when, as a college student, she joined the seminal alternative rock band 10,000 Maniacs. Serving as lead vocalist, lyricist, and sometime pianist, Merchant released five critically acclaimed studio albums with the band, including the platinum-selling In My Tribe (1987), Blind Man's Zoo (1989), Our Time in Eden (1992), and MTV Unplugged (1993). Merchant left the group in 1993, after 12 years, to record her first solo album. Tigerlily (1995) was certified five-times platinum, and was followed by the platinum Ophelia (1998), Natalie Merchant Live (1999), and Motherland (2001).
In 2010, Merchant returned with a thematic double album entitled Leave Your Sleep, her debut for Nonesuch Records. A meditation on childhood and mothering, the anthology comprised 19th and 20th century American and British classic children's poetry by the likes of Robert Louis Stevenson, Christina Rossetti, Robert Graves, Edward Lear, and E.E. Cummings that Merchant had set to music. The result was praised by critics on both sides of the Atlantic, with The Wall Street Journal calling it an ideal fit between poetic and musical forms, and the Independent, a hugely ambitious and beautifully realized double album.1. Out Of The Garden180-Gram Clear Teal Vinyl
Out of the Garden is a mission statement that underscores the
"power" in power-pop and is punctuated by lyrics as razor-sharp as
Written over a two-year period during a break from touring,
the album's emphasis on re-defining feminine expectations was
shaped by primary songwriter Jess Abbott's experiences living in
Minneapolis and working at a liquor store in a rough part of town.
"I learned how to speak up when I needed to and how to truly be
myself without reservation," Abbott recalls. "I felt afraid walking
home at night, and after a couple of months I just got sick of it and
started getting into self-defense and self-empowerment as a means
of coping. Finding my own strength changed everything."
After writing and tracking every song in her apartment, Abbott (also
of beloved Minneapolis trio Now, Now) enlisted Kevin Medina and
Terrence Vitali to add drums and bass to her demos. The band then
traveled to LA to record with OFF! bassist Steven McDonald and
That Dog vocalist/guitarist Anna Waronker.
Abbott's fearlessness to discuss personal topics is referenced in
the album's title, an allusion to exiting Eden and leaving behind all
the restrictive cultural norms engrained in the Biblical "paradise":
tradition, purity, holiness, binary gender, heterosexuality, and the idea
that anything is forbidden (especially for women).
Says Abbott, "Out of the Garden represents doing what you want,
what you need, without letting anything or anyone stop you - and
smiling while you do it."1. Bed Case

In 1992, Dean Wareham followed the posthumous buzz of Galaxie 500 by forming a new band: Luna. Initially joined by Justin Harwood (of the Chills) and Stanley Demeski (of the Feelies), the group went on to sign to Warner Brothers sub-label Elektra, tour with the Velvet Underground, collaborate with Tom Verlaine and Sterling Morrison and ultimately release five stunning albums over the course of the 90s.
Deemed "the best band you've never heard of" by Rolling Stone, Luna remained under the radar for most of their career despite gathering a rabid cult following. It's not hard to see why this is the case, as the three albums featuring the original lineup (plus guitarist Sean Eden on the latter two) act as a perfect synthesis of the members past bands, blending the simplicity of Galaxie, the heavenly pop melodies of the Chills and the quick and intensely precise drumming of the Feelies into one fluid package. This is particularly evident on 1995's fan-favorite Penthouse, in which the band created a masterpiece of lush, late night music that's now considered one of the best of the 90s.
Following Penthouse, the band saw the replacement of Stanley with Lee Wall on drums but no slump in quality. The psychedelic textures of 1997's Pup Tent and the clean and beautiful pop of 1999's Days of Our Nights proved that Luna was a consistently reliable band and not one that would wane with age. Elektra didn't feel the same way, though, and eventually decided not to release Days of Our Nights after paying for the recording.
This box set gathers together those five albums from the 90s as well as a compilation of demos and B-sides recorded contemporaneously, all housed in a beautiful textured canvas box. Accompanying the records is a 12" x 12" book featuring archival imagery, an interview with Dean Wareham conducted by Noah Baumbach and an oral history with the band and their producers. As the majority of these records were never released on vinyl outside of limited pressings, this is a boon to longtime fans and new listeners alike.LP 1: Lunapark (1992)

Not RealNot Real' is the second album by Stealing Sheep which has been written, recorded and produced by band members Becky Hawley, Emily Lansley and Lucy Mercer at their studio in Liverpool. The band met in 2010 and work together creating music and visual art.
The unifying theme of the new album 'Not Real' is an interplay of fact and fiction; the edge of dreams and limits of reality. These visions are grounded by bright melodies and insistent beats and unified by vocal harmonies; sometimes metronomic and chant-like, sometimes choral and pop.
It follows their debut, 'Into the Diamond Sun', released in 2012 by Heavenly Recordings. The first album morphed their individual styles to create a 'medieval-kraut-folk' inspired sound. They were described as an unanticipated 'pagan pop revival' and since its release have toured as guests of Postal Service and Alt-J, opened for St.Vincent in Paris, performed the songs of David Lynch at the Barbican and collaborated with the Radiophonic Workshop on an original soundtrack to the cult 70's science fiction film 'Le Planete Sauvage'.
For the second album they have concentrated on developing the sonic aesthetic of their new music. "We are more focussed about what we are trying to do. Everything has a reason for being there." They have been experimenting with tuned percussion, programmed beats, trigger samples and worked with effected synths, utilising the guitar and lap steel more sparingly and introducing more processed sounds. They've drawn inspiration from 50's exotica, electronic music and 80's pop and have been greatly influenced by the likes of Grace Jones, Can, Delia Derbyshire, Eden Ahbez, Moon Dog and John Carpenter. Grayson Perry's pop-folk art and the band's self-created mythologies were also a source of inspiration for song writing.
This is an alternative pop record that has been 'self-manufactured' by the band. Having learned new skills in the studio over the last years, the band (assisted by Sam Crombie and Joe Wills) have self-produced the album. They have used the studio not only as a writing tool but also as an instrument; experimenting with post production and varying instrumentation and layered textures. "We started off in pre-production doing all the demos ourselves" say's Becky "the demos captured an atmosphere that we wanted to carry forward to the album. The result was a hypbrid of casual takes and more considered recordings
Individual songs on the album have different environments and creatures that go with them, often inspired by the galactic rather than earth-bound imagery. Becky: "I imagine dehumanised worlds, planets with creatures that have evolved in a completely different way
The visual side is highly important to the band, all of whom have art backgrounds. "We like to be involved in all the aspects of the presentation because it's symbiotic to the music." They collaborate with artists and with 'the costumologists', coming up with ideas like "outfits that texturally reflect rhythms" and "frequency triggered, light-up costumes". The colourful and organic album cover, a collaboration between photographer Charlotte Rutherford and collage artist Louise Mason, shows their confident image for this record: as they tread the lines of surreal pop.
There is no stopping the imaginations of Stealing Sheep - but like lucid dreams, these are controlled fantasies and skilfully created worlds. Follow them on a hypnagogic journey as they sing: "listen to yourself and look within".1. Sequence

Midnight SunMoth To A Flame, the album's transportative closer, finds Sean Lennon and Charlotte Kemp Muhl in full psychedelic guise, echoing the minor-key atmospherics of Pink Floyd's Breathe alongside a celestial chorus and mercurial slide guitar.
Midnight Sun follows 2010's Mark Ronson-produced Jardin Du Luxembourg and the same year's homegrown Acoustic Sessions.
In more recent times, the duo have toured with fellow psych voyagers The Flaming Lips and Tame Impala, while Lennon found time to release Mystical Weapons with Deerhoof's Greg Saunier and continue his role as Musical Director of his mother's Plastic Ono Band. Muhl, meanwhile, immersed herself in the folk world with Kemp & Eden.

Inter-BeInter-Be is the debut album by Peter Wolf Crier, the Minneapolis-based duo of Peter Pisano and Brian Moen. The album was born on a single summer night when Pisano felt a torrent of creativity after what had felt, to him, like an interminably long dry spell. He shared the songs with Moen, and over the months that followed, at Moen's home, these rough-hewed tunes became what they are now: a confident collection of songs, but deceptive in that their very guts still reflect the thoughts of a man in transition.
Pisano's is not a new songwriting voice. He is best known for being part of the Wars of 1812, an ascendant Wisconsin-bred quartet. Their first album together, Status Quo Ante Bellum, was more than just an album. It was relocation and aspiration and Pisano's lyrical Eden. As the Wars went on hiatus, Pisano continued to hone his craft, keeping his days full as a teacher at a small private school while fine-tuning, at night, the songs that would soon become Inter-Be. Feeling confident in the songs, Pisano approached Moen, a seasoned drummer and engineer best known for his involvement in Laarks and Amateur Love. After being asked to add some percussive elements, Moen added his thundering drumrolls and perfectly timed fills, but he also added something much more: a melodic soundscape that would complete the evolution of the songs. So was born the partnership that is called Peter Wolf Crier.1. Crutch & Cane

Let Me Come Home (Discontinued) (On Sale)Broken Records' second album Let Me Come Home started out as a series of sketches and song fragments in frontman Jamie Sutherlands kitchen, later taking form in demo sessions at an old distillery grain store in the Scottish Highlands. The follow-up to 2009's Until The Earth Begins To Part, the album was recorded and produced by Tony Doogan (Mogwai, Delgados, Belle & Sebastian) at his Studio in Glasgow.
An idea started to form about the direction of the new record based on several films and albums that I became gradually obsessed with at that time. Watching the widescreen emptiness of films Badlands, Rumble Fish and East Of Eden, as well as records such as Bruce Springsteens Nebraska, Nick Caves Murder Ballads, Calexicos Feast Of Wire, and REMs early back catalogue all became a strong influence on the direction of the new songs. It was also during this time that the lyrical theme of the record started to take shape, thinking about what was going on around me in the form of fears and concerns over making relationships work, and a need for security. - Jamie Sutherland1. The Feather Tipped The Serpent Scale (On Sale)Includes bonus live track, "Ghosts of Eden," not on the CD version!
Salt Lake City-based heavy rock duo Eagle Twin's sophomore LP is finally upon us! Once again, they have created a true masterpiece that will devastate forward-thinking riff-seekers everywhere! Entitled, The Feather Tipped The Serpent's Scale, the new Eagle Twin opus picks up right where the band's acclaimed debut, The Unkindess of Crows, left off.
In this installment, the crows documented in the first album have battled the sun and were burned back down to earth as black snakes, the concept of the album continuing mainly on the snake and its various mythic and symbolic incarnations. Ultimately, the great ancestral snake is transformed from its lowly beginnings back into a bird soaring upon the thermals.
Recorded with Randall Dunn at London Bridge Studio (as with the first album), the record boasts some of the most mesmerizing and monstrous riff transformations from Eagle Twin to date. Eagle Twin merges the talents of guitarist Gentry Densley (of legendary post-hardcore/jazz icons, Iceburn) with thunderous percussion of Tyler Smith (formerly of Form of Rocket).
Following a cult split 7" with Night Terror in 2009, Eagle Twin's incredibly potent and unique multi-faceted approach became apparent to the world when their debut stormed doom and experimental music fans later that year. Scratch My Back...And I'll Scratch YoursGatefold sleeve
Rather than make a traditional covers record, I thought it would be much more fun to create a new type of project in which artists communicated with each other and swapped a song for a song, i.e. you do one of mine and I'll do one of yours, hence the title - Scratch My Back - And I'll Scratch Yours. Peter Gabriel
Scratch My Back And I'll Scratch Yours is a series of song exchanges in which Gabriel and other leading artists reinterpret each other's songs. The first half of this double album, titled Scratch My Back, was originally released in 2010. Gabriel covers work by seasoned superstars like David Bowie, Paul Simon and Lou Reed, but he also took on marvelous interpretations of work by younger acts like Arcade Fire, Bon Iver and Radiohead. In 2013, most of these artists returned the favour on And I'll Scratch Yours.
The reciprocating artists opted for differing approaches to Peter's songs. A few chose to radically reinterpret the original material, in the process leaving it barely recognisable - Lou Reed's snarling Solsbury Hill or the frighteningly futuristic version of Mother Of Violence by Brian Eno, co-writer of David Bowie's Heroes covered by Gabriel on Scratch My Back. Other contributors include Arcade Fire (Games Without Frontiers), Elbow (Mercy Street) and Regina Spektor (Blood Of Eden).LP1

REDI-FIR-9918xOrchestra of Spheres
Vibration Animal Sex Brain MusicOrchestra of Spheres' second full-length album, Vibration Animal Sex Brain Music, is a surreal road-trip through a hyper primal, fuzzed-out, synth laden, garden of Eden. Recorded in Italy in September 2012, in the midst of an epic 70+ gig European tour, this album captures the band as a live, hot, dynamic unit ... a futuristic bunga-bunga party band for 22nd century boom-boom cults!! Vibration Animal Sex Brain Music is being released on Sound Explorers in NZ and on Fire Records in the rest of the world!
The sound is an explosive brew concocted from the primitive, machine-like drumming of Jemi Hemi Mandala, the quicksilver synths of Mos Iocos, the intricate bass lines of EtonalE and the psychedelic biscuit tin guitar work of Baba Rossa. Chanted vocals bring a hypnotic, trance inducing element to many of the tracks, especially in the crowd favourite, Mind Over Might.
Recorded onto 24-track tape at Outside Inside Studio, Montebelluna, Italy, this was the first time the band had recorded in a real studio. Sweaty summer nights, sleep-depriving mosquitoes and abundant fresh local fungi made for a magic combination, and the group banged out all the tunes in one or two takes. The vintage recording gear and mixing talents of Mojo Matt Bordin bring a garage quality to the bands' ancient future funk, and NZ artist Kerry Ann Lee's other-wordly landscapes and magic voodoo scenes adorn the album's cover.
Two weeks after recording, half the band's gear was stolen from the back of their tour van in Poland. Now, somewhere in suburban Krakow, the Spheres' unique homemade instruments, including the sexomouse marimba and electric gamelan, are changing the sound of the Polish underground for the better.1. Holding All The RosesI think that this record does a really good job of conveying what we do and what we're about, Blackberry Smoke singer-guitarist-songwriter Charlie Starr says of Holding All the Roses, the band's fourth studio album and its first Rounder release. Indeed, Holding All the Roses compellingly captures the energy, attitude and honesty that have already helped to make Blackberry Smoke one of America's hottest live rock 'n' roll outfits, as well as a grass-roots phenomenon with a large and fiercely loyal fan base that reflects the band's tireless touring regimen and staunch blue-collar work ethic.
The 12-song set-produced by Brendan O'Brien, whose previous production clients have included AC/DC, Aerosmith, Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young-showcases the Atlanta-based quintet's emotion-charged mix of bluesy rock, gospel soul, and country, with Starr's raspy twang matched by his and Paul Jackson's snarling guitars, Brandon Still's hauntingly expressive organ and piano, and the propulsive sibling rhythm section of Richard and Brit Turner. The songs' musical and emotional appeal is further elevated by the band's three-part vocal harmonies and expanded arrangements that make judicious use of fiddle and added percussion.
The five musicians' instinctive musical rapport manifests itself equally strongly on such surging rockers as Let Me Help You (Find the Door), Living in the Song and Wish In One Hand, and on such intimate, introspective tunes as Woman in the Moon, Too High and the stirring, acoustic-textured No Way Back to Eden. The album's musical and emotional depth demonstrates how Blackberry Smoke continues to extend and expand the Southern rock tradition.1. Let Me Help You (Find the Door)

Endangered Philosophies (Pre-Order)2LP gatefold with etched vinyl
Before Def Jux, before Death Grips, before Yeezus, there was DÄlek (Noisey). Pioneers of alt hip-hop, DÄlek (pronounced die-a-lek) features Rapper/Producer MC DÄlek, Producer/live electronics Mike Manteca, and Turntabilist DJ rEk . With roots in the mid-'90s DIY scene, DÄlek has been delivering groundbreaking albums for over 20 years. They have enraptured fans and critics across all genres, garnering fans and earning accolades from the hip-hop, electronic, indie, metal, shoegaze, jazz and experimental communities.
After releasing seven studio albums, numerous collaborations, EPs, and remixes, they continue to push boundaries with each release. Debut album Negro Necro Nekros (1998), was hailed by NME as a means to deconstruct hip hop, 2002 saw Ipecac Recordings release the game-changing From Filthy Tongue of Gods and Griots, which was followed by 3 more releases on Ipecac Recordings: Absence (2005), Abandoned Language (2007) and GutterTactics (2009).
In 2010, DÄlek went on a five-year hiatus to recoup from a decade of relentless touring, and to focus on new musical projects. In January of 2015, MC DÄlek said he missed the noise, and a tour and new single quickly followed. 2016 saw the release of the critically acclaimed Asphalt for Eden, which Pitchfork declared: hip hop ascends into the noosphere. DÄlek's sonic and lyrical evolution continues.
Endangered Philosophies is DÄlek's signature sound pushed in new directions. Re-sculpted to say all that needs to be said today. It is no one element, but rather an amalgamation of the lyrics, sonics, drums, noise, melody, bass, and turntablism, explains MC DÄlek of the new work. Endangered Philosophies is a very introspective record about very external forces. This isn't about one listen... it's about your evolving perception when you immerse yourself in the layers of sound and words. Endangered Philosophies is a record about the RIGHT NOW and yet will resonate differently each time it is listened to, in a word....timeless.1. Echoes of

ADAD-AST-9614xDots Will Echo
Drunk Is The New Sober/Stupid Is The New DumbDrunk Is The New Sober and Stupid Is The New Dumb are the twin subtitles of Drunk & Stupid, Dots Will Echo's debut album on Asthmatic Kitty, but those aren't just arch witticisms, they encapsulate the apparent contradictions that power the New Jersey duo's music. The warmly weird world created by multi-instrumentalist Nick Berry and drummer Kurt Biroc seems simultaneously sacred and profane, edgy and accessible, sad and transcendently silly. What else would you expect from a group that describes itself as "dour moralizers and drunken assholes" and identifies its key influences as "A little bit The Incredible String Band, a little bit AC/DC?"
"I can see the carnival lights from here," sings Berry in a half-crazed, half-elated tone at the beginning of the opening track, "I Like It," sounding like either a psychotic infatuated with his own attractive fantasy world or a genius inventor marveling at the luminous landscape he's created. It's up to the listener to decide which, but either way it's 100% Dots Will Echo.
Everything on Drunk & Stupid was played by Berry and Biroc, with the basic tracks recorded in a single marathon, three-day session. "I meant this to be a very raw recording, capturing the way we sound live," says Berry, who plays everything from guitars and keyboards to Autoharp, glockenspiel, and Andean charango over the course of the album, as he and Biroc build their own beautifully ramshackle universe from the ground up before your very ears.
"A poorly played violin can sound better than a well played piano," says Berry half-jokingly of the organic, offhand feel of the tracks. From the first moment, Drunk & Stupid makes the listener a fly on the wall for a day in the life of Dots Will Echo, with snatches of goofy studio chatter interspersed between tunes. The bit that leads into the crooked campfire singalong "I'm a Monkey" is particularly telling, as Berry spontaneously announces, "I want to try a song I dreamt the other night," Biroc disapprovingly asks, "In the studio?" and Berry blithely counters, "Yeah, why not?"
In fact, Berry dreams a large percentage of his songs. "Some are stupid, but I let 'em fly anyway," he says self-deprecatingly, "but the really stupid ones, nobody's ever gonna hear." By the time they enter our waking world, Berry's tunes bear trace elements of psychedelia, power pop, field-recording folk, DIY post-punk, and tantalizingly trashy garage rock (the duo does in fact rehearse in Biroc's garage). "What You Tryin' To Do," for instance, comes off like Sister Lovers-era Big Star recording for Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music, while the giddy blastoff of "Rocket Girl" evokes early XTC covered by Guided By Voices, and the fragile, almost-ominous beauty of the hushed, acoustic ballad "Gates of Eden" feels like the greatest song Neil Young never wrote for Galaxie 500.
The black humor that inhabits an impressive amount of real estate in the Dots Will Echo neighborhood isn't the whistling-through-the-graveyard variety, but rather the kind that finds all of creation to be a bit of a knee-slapper. Like the great writers in every medium, Berry finds the human dilemma a source of endless hilarity, even though you can always hear the big, gently bruised heart beating at the core of every song on Drunk & Stupid. Berry sounds like an amphetamine-fueled tour guide as he walks us through a field of mankind's folly on "Seven Deadly Sins," his loopy lyrics punctuated by Captain Beefheart-esque bursts of six-string cubism.
Even when things get apocalyptic, as on the minimalist stomp of the cautionary "Shitstorm," Berry exhibits so much obvious glee in announcing the impending arrival of the titular phenomenon that you can't help singing "there's a shitstorm coming" right along with him and bobbing your head randomly to the track's triumphantly spastic anti-groove. The deceptively mellow-sounding anthem of global dystopia "History's Grave" was written in early 2008, but Berry notes, "Since then many of the events mentioned or alluded to have come to pass. This made me feel a little bit like a character in a Stephen King novel."
At the same time, Drunk & Stupid sports songs like "Be a Friend" and "So Deep the Night," lambent, low-key ballads that balance between bittersweet and unabashedly sentimental without ever turning mawkish. On these tracks, the Lennon-like undertone in Berry's voice rises to the top of the mix, tapping into an almost spiritual vibe and making for some of the most undeniably poignant moments on the album.
Berry and Biroc, who also work together at the same day job (the drummer is Berry's boss), have been making music together since 2004, hashing out their ideas in Biroc's garage and documenting them in Berry's basement studio. Along the way, they've made unofficial micro-pressings of their work, mostly for passing around to friends and admirers in an ad hoc fashion, but Drunk & Stupid represents the first time the duo's freewheeling work has ever been properly presented to the public at large as a full-on album. With all the material the prolific pair has been stockpiling, they had a huge tally of tunes to haul along with them for this project, and hearing it is a little like stumbling for the first time into a lost world with a long legacy of its own rituals, relics, regalia, and history. But once you wander in, you can't imagine how you ever existed without it.
Originally meant to be two separate discs (the vinyl version is a double LP with download codes for bonus tracks), Drunk & Stupid is a wild ride that clocks in at just under 80 minutes and boasts 19 songs overflowing with insanely catchy melodies, endearingly off-kilter arrangements, and a strangely satisfying blend of the divine and the absurd." As Berry says, "We try to allow for the will of the universe to have a large part in our music. There must be something sacred in mistakes. This is our explanation for being fuck-ups."1. Untitled
