    Duran Duran

Duran Duran's eponymous debut artfully coalesced the sonic and stylistic elements of the burgeoning new romantic movement they were soon to spearhead: pumping synths, glossy production, and seemingly impossible haircuts. Ultra-smart singles like Girls on Film and Planet Earth became instant smash hits both in the U.K. and America, and other fine pop gems such as Anyone Out There and Careless Memories rounded out the album's stellar first side.

Side two was a far more experimental and revealing affair, with primary songwriter Nick Rhodes leading the band through atmospheric mood-pieces like Night Boat, Sound of Thunder, and the instrumental Tel Aviv, all of which are particularly reminiscent of mid-era Roxy Music (clearly one of Duran's biggest influences).

    Notorious

Notorious is the fourth studio album by the English rock/pop band Duran Duran. Released in November 1986. Produced by the band with Nile Rodgers, the album showcased a new musical direction for the band, emphasizing bass and brass as exemplified by the singles Notorious and Skin Trade

Duran Duran personified new wave for much of the mainstream audience. Their reputation was built through music videos, which accentuated their fashion-model looks and glamorous sense of style. Each video the group made was distinctive, incorporating a number of cinematic styles to showcase the band as either part of the jet-setting elite (Rio) or as worldly adventurers (Hungry Like the Wolf). Between 1982 and 1984, they rocketed from underground British post-punk sensations to teen idols.

In 1981, Duran Duran became the leaders of the new romantic movement, and media sensations in the British music and mainstream press. The group's popularity increased through its cutting-edge music videos, especially the bizarre, racy clip for Girls on Film. the single became the group's first Top Ten hit, setting the stage for the fall release of its eponymous debut album. Duran Duran reached number three upon its release and stayed in the charts for 118 weeks.

    Rio

    2009 Remastered Version

Duran Duran's artistic progression from their self-titled debut to the following year's Rio was the greatest aesthetic leap of their career. The group moved from catchy but somewhat rudimentary New Romantic synth-funk to elegantly arranged, sophisticated pop-rock, concentrating more on song structure than dance beats. For their efforts, they were rewarded with superstar status, due chiefly to Hungry Like the Wolf, a lascivious tune that injects a welcome dose of rock & roll guitar. The most impressive tracks on Rio, though, are the more contemplative, balladic offerings, like Lonely in Your Nightmare, Save a Prayer, and especially The Chauffer, with its stream-of-consciousness lyrics and unconventional structure. If you could only own one Duran Duran album, it should be Rio!

    Paper Gods

Duran personified new wave for much of the mainstream audience. Duran Duran's reputation was built through music videos, which accentuated their fashion-model looks and glamorous sense of style. Without music videos, it's likely that their pop-funk -- described by the group as the Sex Pistols meets Chic-- would never have made them international pop stars.

Inspired by David Bowie and Roxy Music, as well as post-punk and disco, schoolmates Nick Rhodes (keyboards) and John Taylor (guitar) formed Duran Duran in 1978 with their friends Simon Colley (bass, clarinet) and Stephen Duffy (vocals). Taking their name from a character in Roger Vadim's psychedelic sci-fi film Barbarella, the group began playing gigs in the Birmingham club, supported by a drum machine. Within a year, Duffy and Colley both left the and were replaced by former TV Eye vocalist Andy Wickett and drummer Roger Taylor. After recording a demo, John Taylor switched to bass and guitarist John Curtis joined the band, only to leave within a matter of months. The group placed an ad in Melody Maker, which drew the attention of Andy Taylor, who became their guitarist. Following Wickett's departure in 1979, a pair of singers passed through the group before Simon LeBon, a former member of the punk band Dog Days and a drama student at Birmingham University, joined in early 1980.

    Journeys To Glory

    180 Gram Vinyl

First Pressing Of 1000 Numbered Copies On Transparent Vinyl

Journeys To Glory is the first studio album by Spandau Ballet. When it was released in 1981, the album was considered fresh, bold, and even somewhat avant-garde. Many fans feel that the spare, drum-led, Funk-undertones are more original than the group's later Soul-influenced recordings.

Several of their New Romantic contemporaries (Ultravox, Duran Duran, Visage), were musically quite credible. Spandau Ballet proved at a very young age they were a force to be reckoned with. Songs like To Cut A Long Story Short and Musclebound are the album's highlights.

First Time Friday Music 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl

Mastered Impeccably By Joe Reagoso At Friday Music & Capitol Mastering

Their self-effacing name to the contrary, Average White Band was anything but - one of the few white groups to cross the color line and achieve success and credibility playing funk, with their tight, fiery sound also belying their Scottish heritage, evoking American R&B hotbeds like Detroit, Memphis, and Philadelphia instead. Singer/bassist Alan Gorrie, guitarists Hamish Stuart and Onnie McIntyre, tenor saxophonist Malcolm Duncan, keyboardist/saxophonist Roger Ball, and drummer Robbie McIntosh comprised the original Average White Band lineup. Veterans of numerous Scottish soul and jazz groups, they made their debut in 1973 as the opening act at Eric Clapton's Rainbow Theatre comeback gig, soon issuing their debut LP, Show Your Hand, to little notice. After adopting the abbreviated moniker AWB, a year later the band issued their self-titled sophomore effort, topping the American pop charts with the Arif Mardin-produced instrumental "Pick Up the Pieces." The record's mammoth success was nevertheless tempered by the September 23, 1974 death of McIntosh, who died at a Hollywood party after overdosing on heroin.

Ex-Bloodstone drummer Steve Ferrone replaced McIntosh for AWB's third album, 1975's Cut the Cake, which scored a Top Ten hit with its title track as well as two other chart entries, "If I Ever Lose This Heaven" and "School Boy Crush." (Put It Where You Want It, issued later that same year, was simply a retitled and repackaged Show Your Hand.) With 1976's Soul Searching, the group reclaimed the full Average White Band name, scoring their final Top 40 hit with "Queen of My Soul." Following the live Person to Person, they issued Benny & Us, a collaboration with soul legend Ben E. King. However, after subsequent outings, including 1978's Warmer Communications, 1979's Feel No Fret, and 1980's Shine, failed to recapture the energy of AWB's peak, the group dissolved in 1982, with Ferrone later joining Duran Duran and Stuart recording with Paul McCartney. Gorrie, Ball, and McIntyre reformed Average White Band in 1989, tapping vocalist Alex Ligertwood for their comeback effort Aftershock. Oft-sampled by hip-hop producers throughout the 1990s, the group continued touring prior to releasing Soul Tattoo in 1996. The live album, Face to Face, followed three years later.

This Newly Reissued Vinyl Addition Is A 'Must Have' Title For For Both Getz And Tjader Fans.

In the vein of many a smooth West Coast jazz outing, this 1958 disc finds original cool stylist Getz paired with vibraphonist Cal Tjader on a very enjoyable
selection of jazz standards and Tjader originals. The lineup includes pianist Vince Guaraldi, guitarist Eddie Duran, bassist Scott La Faro, and drummer
Billy Higgins (this was one of the earliest record dates for either La Faro or Higgins, both of whom were playing with Getz at San Francisco's Black Hawk
in between recording sessions). Guaraldi's spry Ginza Samba kicks thing off with nimble and imaginative statements by all the soloists. Tjader's
swinging originals Crow's Nest and Big Bear provide prime solo vehicles as well, while his lovely waltz number Liz-Anne adds some nice contrast to
the set, eliciting one of Getz's best solos in the process. The group rounds things out with fine ballad readings of I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face
    and For All We Know.

Stan Getz: one of the all-time great tenor saxophonists

Cal Tjader: The legendary percussionist who is often linked to the development of Latin rock and acid jazz. Although fusing jazz with Latin music is often
categorized as Latin jazz (or, earlier, Afro-Cuban jazz), Tjader's output swung freely between both styles.

Cascading keyboards, unnerving guitars, off-kilter rhythms, and the grotesque lyricism of THE PHANTOM LIMBS forge a grandiose monument on the verge of collapse like a gothic cathedral built on quicksand.

Their unsettling ilk of carny death rock & punk draws comparisons to The Screamers and Christian Death or contemporaries like the Subtonix, but don't expect today's glut of punks-with-keyboards playing 80s redux! L.A.'s De Lux are a post-disco dance-punk DIY duo that sound like they could
have come out of 1979 or 1982 just as easily as 2013. Founders and multi-instrumentalists Sean Guerin and Isaac Franco didn't meet so much as simply appear to
each other, sometime before high school ended and after learning to correctly fall
off skateboards began. Even at age 18, however, it was the kind of connection that
had been years in the making.

Sean had been writing songs since he was 15 and had spent recent years recording
and re-recording his own songs. And Isaac had been on a strict diet of classic and
obscure disco and boogie music since he too was 15, figuring out the original source
of hip-hop's greatest samples thanks to an older brother with a DJ sideline and an
enviable collection. They both were after the same thing in music-the groove, they
say, where the bass and the beat align in a perfect way that makes you want a song to
go on forever. They were even in a band together, but it wasn't De Lux. But you can
hear the exact moment De Lux became a band when you listen to "Better At Making
Time," the song they built from Isaac's out-of-nowhere bassline just before practice
for that other band was supposed to start: "Sean was like, 'You should record that!'"
says Isaac, "and I was like, 'What, really?'"

From lead track "Better At Making Time," De Lux roars through Psychedelic Furs
or Duran Duran-style pop ("Love Is A Phase"), delivers shouts and whispers like
James Murphy at his most frantic ("Make Space"), sinks into Eno-esque moments
of bliss ("On The Day") and rockets through the agit-funk David Byrne-style rave-up finale "Sometimes Your Friends Are Not Your Friends." And this is all from the
first-take-they never re-record, says Sean. If they don't perfectly catch that beat as
it happens, they let it go. That's probably why Voyage sounds as wild and alive as it
does. Just like on that surprise recording "Better Making Time," you're not hearing
a band come together. And just like how they met, you're hearing a band appear.

Starting with a random snippet of evangelist preaching isn't necessarily the newest of touches in music, but putting it at the beginning of a track called Monster Lust has its own appeal. Creed's second solo album was his conscious return to the more zoned-and-stoned style of Chrome, though given how there was a fair amount of that on X-Rated Fairy Tales it would be more accurate to say that on Finger Creed just decided to let everything run riot. Tempos are often more stretched out than before, effects are tweaked and then tweaked again; in short, it's everything that a lot of rock music both mainstream and underground in 1988 was generally avoiding. With new drummer Ted Preuss helping out with returning bassist Duran, Creed leads his merry men into another fantastic bout of aggro-death-science-fiction snarl. Creed's low, vicious voice perfectly suits his abrasive feedback and more, while the rhythm section can both pound out things in a metal-punk style or just go with the flow. Who Cares is one of the best in the latter vein, with heavily flanged drums mixing with the simple but effective basslines as Creed goes off with both guitar and distorted vocals. Thick blasts of feedback that fill up the mix in both rhythm and soloing often remain the way of things for Creed; Too Bad, with its quick, almost punky verses, is a great example of him at his most crazed. The title track is one of Creed's best, a slow-and-low number with another great taking-off-to-Mars solo from the band and some disturbing rumbles down deep in the bass. Sometimes things maybe get a bit lost along the way -- The Cookie Jar descends into some aimless bits before picking up the groove again -- but otherwise Creed once again is flying high.

Recorded with a fairly straightforward backing band (bassist Mark Duran, synth-player John Carlan, and drummer/keyboardist Bill Roth), Creed's first solo album still turned out to be something touched with the unmistakable mark of Chrome. The production was often murky and strange, effects processing was everywhere, Creed's vocals sounded on the edge of sanity, and, of course, the guitars. Still creating one massive rock surge after another, with feedback piled on top of feedback and, likely enough, more pedals than anyone had ever seen at any one time, Creed showed once again why his guitar-god reputation exists in the first place. That his first solo album continued the true vibe of Chrome where Damon Edge's own use and abuse of the name made him a laughing stock probably wasn't that surprising in the end. Creed himself thought of this album as a more stripped-down, less stony affair, but it's mostly a matter of splitting hairs from an outside perspective. Considering that the title track itself is an acoustic guitar-led acid folk number with appropriate crumbling guitar noises in the background and post-hippie vibes everywhere, one has to wonder what Creed considers to be really stoned music. The most crisp the album gets is with the rhythm section, which often has a good full-bodied punch to it (and if anything sounds a bit like the work of Can, one of Chrome's inspirations). There's a little less stuff about alien takeovers and lurking gods outside the solar system and the like -- there's even a semi-cover of the old Chuck Berry classic Johnny B. Goode -- but then again one almost-dancefloor number is called Sex Voodoo Venus, so go figure. Showdown is also a pretty focused, rhythmic number notable for chunky riffs rather than extended soloing, while the You don't like me/I don't like you lyrics are pretty funny (and maybe about Edge -- and who could blame him?).
