Kenny Drew was an unsung master of bebop. A brilliant pianist who started with the example of Bud Powell and then developed his own sound within the style, in the '50s Drew worked with some of the most important innovators of all time including Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Buddy DeFranco, Dinah Washington and Art Blakey. By 1960 when he recorded Undercurrent, Drew had already led ten albums of his own, mostly with duos and trios. Oddly enough he only had the opportunity to lead two albums in his life for Blue Note, an early effort from 1953 and the classic Undercurrent. Joined in a quintet by the young firebrand trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, the always-stimulating tenor-saxophonist Hank Mobley, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Louis Hayes, the 32-year old pianist shows that he was ready to truly make his mark on the jazz world. All six compositions are his, and in his accompaniment of the passionate horn men and also in his soulful solos, Drew shows that he was one of the major hard bop stylists. This high energy album, which finds Hubbard, Mobley and Drew consistently inspiring each other to come up with heated statements, has many of the pianist's finest compositions including the roaring "Undercurrent," the bluesy "Funk-Cosity," the gospellish "The Pot's On," the well titled "Groovin' The Blues" and the beautiful "Ballade." Kenny Drew, who would move permanently to Europe in 1964 and would not lead another album until 1973, is heard throughout at the peak of his powers, creating his finest recording.

    Duo (Schumann, Debussy, Shostakovich, Brahms)

Two of today's most passionate and inspirational artists join forces in the recital programme that brought audiences to their feet at the Menuhin Festival in
Gstaad in Summer 2011. The chemistry between HÉlène Grimaud and Sol Gabetta left critics and audiences nothing short of euphoric and this first duo
recording captures the revelatory magic of their collaboration.

This is the first time, that either artist has embarked on a dedicated duo recording project and it goes far beyond a traditional musical collaboration. Based
on a rare understanding on many levels - musical, emotional and personal, this fresh and strong encounter does not even raise the question of who
accompanies whom. Finding new musical insights in familiar work, HÉlène and Sol present masterpieces in new light.

The album reprises the same programme the duo performed in Gstaad: Robert Schumann's FantasiestÜcke, Claude Debussy's Sonata for Cello and Piano in D minor, Johannes Brahms Sonata for Cello and Piano No.1 in E minor and Dmitri Shostakovich's Sonata for Cello and Piano.

"Grimaud doesn't sound like most pianists: she is a reinventor of phrasings, a taker of chances Her albums aren't merely proficient tours through the
repertoire; they are highly personal explorations that can stand out among dozens of rival performances. Her strongly interpretive playing has made her
a favorite among many conductors and reviewers." (The New Yorker). HÉlène's recordings have been best-sellers on the Yellow Label with more than 800.000 units sold altogether to date.

Like Grimaud, in addition to performing traditional repertoire with the world's great orchestras, Sol Gabetta is a champion of new works and a passionate
musical collaborator. Argentine-French of Russian origin, Sol is a best-selling, chart-storming artist, who is regarded as one of the great cellists of our day,
impressing with her intriguing, full-bodied approach and a charismatic, conquering personality.

    Pressed On Marble Blue Vinyl

Shadow of the Sun is the result of a few months of Moon Duo wrangling with a new and unsettling way of being. Working both in a dark basement in Portland, and above ground in sunny San Francisco, these new sounds and songs veered dramatically from groove to groove, revealing sonic textures the duo had not previously explored. The song Night Beat, with it's woozy dance rhythm, is an attempt at finding joy and acceptance on this new, shifting ground, while Wilding plays off the familiar Moon Duo sound, taking refuge in a repetitive, grounding riff-scape. Elsewhere the band gives itself entirely up to the trip, cruising along on the fuzzed rhythms of Slow Down Low and Free the Skull, crashing into the clenched-teeth herky-jerk of Zero, and floating down, down, down, on the narcotic mist of In a Cloud.

Arriving just a year and a half after their last album (Mazes), Moon Duo's latest was largely inspired by Ralph Waldo Emerson's 1841 essay "Circles." Most of it was tracked back home in Colorado in February, with a few final sessions at Lucky Cat Recordings in San Francisco last April. Expect a worldwide tour in support of the record later this year.

    Mazes (Awaiting Repress)

Mazes is the newest long-player from psych prodigies Moon Duo. For just over two years now Ripley Johnson (Wooden Shjips) and Sanae Yamada have been burning up the scene with their propulsive beats and compelling acid washed shows. Formed in San Francisco, the duo recently relocated to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. This record, however, was cut in Berlin. Certainly the most pop-oriented batch of songs the band has ever delivered, Mazes, reveals a more accessible vocal delivery and song structure that is sure to appeal to a wide audience not necessarily well-versed in the psych underground. The concepts of minimalism, expansion through repetition and sensory distortion are all still here and the dynamic interplay between Ripleys guitar and Sanaes keyboard continue to push this band and genre into uncharted territory.

    Occult Architecture Vol. 1

Meaning all things magick and supernatural, the root of the word occult is that which is hidden, concealed, beyond the limits of our minds. If this is occult, then the Occult Architecture of Moon Duo's fourth album - a psychedelic opus in two separate volumes released in 2017 - is an intricately woven hymn to the invisible structures found in the cycle of seasons and the journey of day into night, dark into light. Offering a cosmic glimpse into the hidden patterning embedded in everything, Occult Architecture reflects the harmonious duality of these light and dark energies through the Chinese theory of Yin and Yang. In Chinese, Yin means the shady side of the hill and is associated with the feminine, darkness, night, earth. Following this logic, Vol. 1 embraces and embodies Moon Duo's darker qualities - released appropriately, in the heart of winter in the Northern Hemisphere.

Locus, the seventh album by the Chicago Underground Duo (Rob Mazurek and Chad Taylor), follows on the heels of their acclaimed 2012 Northern Spy release Age of Energy. Shadow of the Sun

Comes With 7 Featuring Lead Single "Animal" & Vinyl-Exclusive B-Side "Fadeaway"

Moon Duo began work on their latest album during a period in which they
faced a curious new reality. Freed from deadlines and expectations, and suddenly
off the road for a stretch, Ripley Johnson and Sanae Yamada found themselves
each experiencing strange shifts in their perceptions of reality. Like the beginning
of an acid trip, or the edge of dusk, when shadows converge mysteriously with
light, life began to slip into a surreal dream, and then back, suddenly, without
warning. Unstable in these strange shadows and light, the band turned to music
to tether themselves to a kind of working sanity.

Shadow of the Sun is the result of a few months of wrangling with this new unsettling
way of being. Working both in a dark basement in Portland, and above
ground in sunny San Francisco, these new sounds and songs veered dramatically
from groove to groove, revealing sonic textures the duo had not previously
explored. The song "Night Beat," with its woozy dance rhythm, is an attempt at
finding joy and acceptance on this new, shifting ground, while "Wilding" plays
off the familiar Moon Duo sound, taking refuge in a repetitive, grounding
riff-scape. Elsewhere the band gives itself entirely up to the trip, cruising along
on the fuzzed rhythms of "Slow Down Low" and "Free the Skull," crashing into
the clenched-teeth herky-jerk of "Zero," and floating down, down, down, on the
narcotic mist of "In a Cloud."

To further coat the album in a fog of stoned confusion, the duo decamped to
Berlin to mix with Finnish beat-meister Jonas Verwijnen of Kaiku Studios. There
they managed to entirely reverse the clarity of the album, increasing the overall
focus, and creating an unorthodox argument for sanity through extreme negation
    of proper technique and conventionality.

The result, at the end of the trip, is the album Shadow of the Sun.

Third Man Records presents the reissue of the Flat Duo Jets hard to find classic 1991 release Go Go Harlem Baby. The piece de resistance of Dex Romwebers voluminous back catalog, ably backed by the trusty Chris Crow Smith on drums, the album is as solid an LP as you will ever find. Some of you may remember Jack White dropping the needle on the Jets version of Froggy Went a Courtin in the It Might Get Loud doc as an indicator of his early influences. Maybe you remember the White Stripes covering You Belong to Me or Apple Blossom Time in their live performances. Those songs, as well as all the rest featured on Go Go Harlem Baby are genuinely important in the pantheon of American music. Out-of-print on vinyl since its original issue 20-years ago, Third Man Records worked solidly for a year-and-a-half to make this record available once again!

    Occult Architecture Vol. 2

Meaning all things magick and supernatural, the root of the word occult is that
which is hidden, concealed, beyond the limits of our minds. If this is occult, then
the Occult Architecture of Moon Duo's fourth album - a psychedelic opus in two
separate volumes released in 2017 - is an intricately woven hymn to the invisible
structures found in the cycle of seasons and the journey of day into night, dark
    into light.

Offering a cosmic glimpse into the hidden patterning embedded in everything,
Occult Architecture reflects the harmonious duality of these light and dark energies
through the Chinese theory of Yin and Yang.

Following the Yin (feminine, darkness, night, earth) represented on Occult Architecture
Vol. 1, Vol. 2 presents the Yang. Yang means "the bright side of the hill" and
is associated with the male, sun, light and the spirit of heaven, and as such Vol. 2
explores the light and airy elements of Moon Duo's complex psyche.

"In production, we referred to Vol. 1 as the fuzz dungeon, and Vol. 2 as the crystal
palace," guitarist Ripley Johnson explains. "The darkness of Vol. 1 gave birth to the
light of Vol. 2. We had to have both elements in order to complete the cycle. We're
releasing them separately to allow them their own space, and to ensure clarity
of vision. To that end we also mixed Vol. 2 separately, in the height of Portland
summer, focusing on its sonic qualities of lightness, air, and sun. Listeners can
ultimately use the two volumes individually or together, depending on circumstance
    or the desired effect."

Vol. 2 was mixed in Portland by the band's longtime collaborator Jonas Verwijnen.

    Four Foot Shack

How "deconstructed" can a group get? How about just one vocal, one bass, one guitar, and a basic beat supplied by stomping on a mini-tambourine-doohickey? That's exactly what everyone's favorite storyteller/narrator, Les Claypool, is incorporating in his new band, Duo de Twang. While Les is still pulling double duty with the Primus lads, he has also found the time to unite with his old buddy, Bryan Kehoe, who fans will recognize from several past Claypool projects, and also as one of the main actors from Les' hilarious jam band mockumentary, 'Electric Apricot: Quest for Festeroo.' But unlike Primus, DDT focuses more on the Americana/rootsy side of things - as heard throughout the band's debut recording Four Foot Shack, to be released via ATO Records.

And as evidenced by DDT's live shows and debut, Les and Bryan mostly mix traditional tunes, popular covers, and readings of Primus classics (all of which are usually barely recognizable when compared to the original versions). Case in point, the inclusion of "Battle of New Orleans," "Stayin' Alive," "Man in the Box," "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver," and "Jerry Was A Race Car Driver" on DDT's debut disc. "A lot of it is just stumbling across it," explains Les about how a tune is selected to be twang-ified. "You're twanging away, and then all of a sudden, something just comes out. And then you laugh about it or you don't. And then you move on. There are tons of songs that we've stumbled across, and these ones just happened to be the ones that stuck."

Upon hearing Four Foot Shack you'll quickly discover that Les and Bryan made it a point to keep things as live-sounding as humanly possible. "It was very live," admits Les. "In fact, it was a little difficult, with all the bleed of the stomping and the bass and the vocals. Every now and again you can hear the studio refrigerator come on or the dog barking at something outside in the background. Once it was there, you had to kind of leave it."

Les added, "The Twang project is me exploring a lot of stuff that I personally listen to; Johnny Horton, Vernon Dalhart, Jerry Reed, Bob Wills, Eddy Cochran stuff like that - it's another door for me to open. I'm doing this sort of Luther Perkins, Johnny Cash guitar-ish type part on my bass, by doing the old ding-dinka-ding, dinka-ding-dinka-ding on a lot of the stuff. It took me a little bit to get that. Now that I've gotten it, I can pull songs out of the air and it's surprising how many songs easily succumb to the twang, and can be complimented by the twang. When all is said and done, it's just a hell of a fun project for me right now. I'll do it 'til it's not fun anymore."

This blast from Dex and his sister Sara really cooks. The A-side is imbued with all kinds of Gene Vincent, Sun Records rockabilly ferocity. The flip is a cover of the Geechie Wiley standard and provides Dexs golden voice the perfect platform to display its awesomeness. Jack White contributes vocals to both tracks as well as his signature guitar to 'Last Kind...' and the unusual sawing wood on 'Wind.' Lost Time

Greg Fox (Guardian Alien, Liturgy, Zs) and Kid Millions (Man Forever, Oneida, People of the North) each approach their drums with a spiritual reverence. Together, they test the boundaries of rhythmic interplay through subtle and ecstatic means. They are often highlights of the groups they're respectively known for, Liturgy and Oneida, while concurrently leading cutting-edge ensembles and collaborating with some of the most innovative musicians of our time. Explorative by nature, each drummer is constantly challenging themselves and setting new musical goals, and it is these qualities that have made them in demand not only in New York, but through out the world. Lost Time is their first collaborative album, sparked by a mutual admiration and cemented by a deep and abiding friendship that has grown over the past five years. Improvisation is a language, and this album is a dialogue between two skilled musicians whose hunger to cover new musical ground binds them together. Their friendship is not only an essential foundation for, but also a key ingredient of, this display of improvisational and compositional mastery Lost Time is comprised of two long pieces that represent opposite ends of a musical spectrum, one blasting and one meditative. "Telegy/Time Lapse" is an astounding array of rhythm and noise, with Fox and Millions using their amplified heartbeats as the backdrop for percussive mayhem. Both musicians are maniacal, playing frantic but precise patterns bolstered by synthesizer loops and bursts of noise programmed by Fox. The incorporation of their heartbeats, the synchronization of their internal and external rhythms, was inspired by Fox's mentor and legendary free-jazz drummer Milford Graves. "Post Encounter Effect" exists in a space of relative calm, its complexity less conspicuous but no less profound. Fox and Millions play a slow and steady pattern that phases in and out of sync like a slow-motion Reich composition throughout the piece's 20 minute run-time. Perhaps most surprising is the emphasis on non-percussive instruments, guitars, keyboard, and even trumpet, that provide a tonal base drone and further the rhythmic exchange significantly.

    Killing Time (Expanded Edition)

    Pressed On Red Colored Vinyl

Moon Duo is the solo alter-ego of Wooden Shjips guitarist and singer Ripley Johnson. Under the Moon Duo moniker, Johnson creates expansive Krautrock-influenced tapestries of warm cascading fuzz and controlled feedback, organ, and accenting keyboard.

The Killing Time 12-inch was their second release, incorporating a much more concise, composed and driving sound than before. Johnson expanded on ideas only hinted at on the Sick Thirst 12-inch, adding a driving drum machine beat behind the thick walls of layered sound.

This expanded edition of Killing Time features the original four songs plus three bonus tracks: "Bopper's Hat" - originally released on a split-7 with Bitchin Bajas on Permanent Records,"Run Around" - originally released on Menagerie #2 on Blackest Rainbow Records, and "Dead West Pt. II" - originally released on Raven Sings the Blues Vol. 2.
