    Actress: DJ Kicks

British techno-related visionary Actress joins the DJ-Kicks series this May with a singular hour-long set, following his acclaimed fourth full-length effort, Ghettoville, a recent re-release of his debut LP Hazyville, and a limited-edition black label project Xoul on his own Werkdiscs label.

For Actress (aka Darren Cunningham), the process of selecting tracks was fraught with meaning on a number of levels. "When I'm selecting music I'm not always thinking about the music alone," Cunningham explains. "I'm thinking about the names of the artists, tracks, and labels, and what they mean to me. I often base my tracklisting purely on how well the track titles work together in a poetic sense."

"I've tried to keep space between tracks, allowing them to speak," he continues. "I tried not to force BPM shifts and to let the programming remain choppy and quick."

Of course, the DJ-Kicks wouldn't be complete without an exclusive production from the author himself. "Bird Matrix," a track he made just after he finished writing Ghettoville. "My studio was going through a transition, so I was testing all the equipment, and that was one of the first tunes that came out of those experiments," he explains. It's a fittingly exploratory tune for a mix that balances traditional functionality with dance music's cutting edge.

    Dance Mania: Ghetto Madness

Strut return to the archives of seminal Chicago house label Dance Mania in January 2015 for 'Dance Mania: Ghetto Madness'. The follow-up to Strut's acclaimed Dance Mania label retrospective 'Hardcore Traxx' from early 2014, this new installment places the spotlight on the raw, stripped back, hyper bpms of ghetto house and the rise of the movement's fresh generation of stars during the mid' 90's including DJ Deeon, DJ Funk, Jammin' Gerald and DJ Milton. The album tells the story of the evolution of Chicago's sound during the era as mix tapes circulated through local stores and DJs developed their own underground following, playing local parties in the projects. Crowds began responding to faster bpms and gangsta rap-inspired X-rated lyrics. As DJ Deeon remembers, "it bridged the gap. It made it OK for guys in the ghetto to like house again and it brought the women onto the dance floor too." Dance Mania was perfectly positioned to capitalise on the new sound - many of the DJ's came regularly into Ray Barney's record store and, as Chicago's most trusted and respected label owner, he was offered the best tracks for commercial release at an early stage. 'Ghetto Madness' brings together some of the underground classics and enduring favourites that earned Dance Mania the title of 'Ghetto House's Motown'. Tracks include DJ Deeon's party-starter 'The Freaks', raw DJ Funk cut 'Computer Sex' and Nina Kraviz favourite, Paul Johnson's 'Give Me Ecstacy'. Other featured gems from the archive include the dark early Steve Poindexter outing 'Computer Madness' and Tyree's in-demand jam, 'Nuthin' Wrong'.

Peter Brown and Patrick Adams: two names as likely to create frenzy on the dance floor as an eBay auction are the P's of P&P Records. The P&P story started in the mid-sixties with Peter Brown leaving his rural home in Georgia for the hustle and bustle of Harlem NYC. It was not long before Peter met up with Patrick and their historic run onto the charts and dance floors began. Together Peter and Patrick put out a seemingly endless string of records on imprints such as P&P Records, Queen Constance, Golden Flamingo, Heavenly Star, Sound of New York, Hit Makers, PAP, Sound of the Universe etc. etc. etc.

Now world renowned club DJ Spinna and Five Day Weekend have united and combined resources to present some of the rarest and most sought after Disco and Modern Soul the world has to offer on Spinna vs. P&P Records.

The LP edition features cuts selected by DJ Spinna for the insane continuous mix found on the CD version. Here you'll find Spinna's P&P favorites in their entirety. Many of the cuts are long out of print and hard to find. Some go for 100s in eBay auctions and from rare vinyl dealers. DJ Spinna vs. P&P the LP Edition offers you these highly sought after aural masterpieces from the P&P catalog on a new, pristine vinyl pressing...all hand selected by a DJ/producer who understands the very soul of New York City.

    Little Girl Blue Remixed

Perhaps not as well known to the general public, Bethlehem Records earned its place in Jazz history with the release of debut albums from artists like Carmen McRae, Chris Connor, Herbie Mann and Johnny Hartman. Besides that, check those early covers - pure art!

Bethlehem's most famous release is the 1958 debut album by Nina Simone, Little Girl Blue. So when DJ Maestro got the chance to remix this album, he was thrilled. Soon he got the idea to ask some of his favorite producers to collaborate, like Mop Mop, Renegades of Jazz, Gramophonedzie, Fab Samperi, The Reflex and Mees Dierdorp.

One thing they all had in common: excitement to work with the original recordings from this iconic album. The result is 14 remixes, each with a unique approach to the original song, and all with a contemporary feel.

    DJ Koze - DJ-Kicks

DJ Koze - with his friendly and sometimes slightly melancholic take on the world - is one of the greatest auteurs of club music today, and one of the few internationally active DJs who dares to make music that has relevance beyond the dance floor. During the 70-minute journey on his DJ Kicks - the 50th edition - Kosi Kos manages to establish a uniform color even though genres alternate in a way that is rarely heard on a mix CD: the stripped down hip hop of Madlib, brutalist Berghain techno, timeless songwriting, floating indie-pop and outlier numbers that oscillate between absurdity and melancholy. Koze's disregard for the stylistic yoke presents him with an immense challenge. Hence, almost all the tracks are more or less edited, and one is fully rhymed (Session Victim: Hyuwee).Koze rambles on here himself: I didn't want to kick around sophisticated knowledge, but rather try and weave together some good gems that would make sense to anyone, even people who aren't necessarily music nerds. But this is blabbing that you can count on, also because he approaches the term mix from a different angle and doesn't even try to make something fit that doesn't fit: During the day, I don't need to hear anything that's mixed on the beat. I put the focus on making sure that it works harmoniously - the idea is more to create the impression of a radio show, like people such as John Peel did so uniquely. There is a giant cosmos of music and it runs through my filter.

Wolf + Lamb and Soul Clap, two of the most exciting DJ duos of recent times, don't believe in taking themselves too seriously, their DJ-Kicks mix is diametrically opposed to the banging soul-less beats that have dominated the club scene for, well, far too long. A 27-track journey full of emotion and changes of tempo and mood, it ebbs and flows like a moonlit summer tide, from gorgeous downtempo grooves such as Can't See What Is Burning There by Nicolas Jaar to the slinky disco-house of South Aphrika by Lee Curtiss.

    DJ Kicks

Some mixes are just mixes, but some change the agenda. Rupert Parkes, aka Photek, was determined that his DJ-Kicks set would be the latter. I wanted to create one of those classic listening experiences, he says. With a mix like this, you can either bang it with the most current dancefloor tunes, or you can put a theme into it, or you can make it a journey. I was thinking about the classic LTJ Bukem mix tapes that I first came across in 92 and 93 and how epic they were. There was such a range of styles on there, they were so timeless and had real character. They had some personality. Thats what I wanted to capture with my DJ-Kicks mix.

Hes certainly done just that. Starting with his own Azymuth, the tracks range from the moody, downtempo throb of In 2 Minds by Kromestar to the broken, tribal beats of Boddikas remix of Photeks 101 to straight-up tech house such as Baby Fords 1994 classic Dead Eye. The thread linking them together is a brooding atmosphere that recalls Parkess classic drum n bass releases in the 90s (although there isnt a drum n bass track to be seen). Fountainhead, a collaboration between Photek and Kuru and exclusive to this DJ-Kicks mix, sums up the vibe perfectly with its swirling textures, echoing vocal cut-ups and stonking low-end. Its music with some atmosphere, explains Parkes. Its introspective. I imagined that this would be the mixtape that you listen to later on, after the club. Its more intimate. Im not trying to show what I would do in a club, its something completely different.

In 2 Minds by Kromestar is a key track, he continues. I stumbled across it on Beatport. It reminds me of Art Of Noise, that weird early electro music. I mean it is very weird. Then theres one of my all time favourite tracks, Dead Eye by Baby Ford. That song is always in my mind. Its moody as fuck. It came out in 94, but it sounds like it was made this year. I listened to it everyday for a year, then I listened to it on a new pair of headphones and started hearing new things in it. Its magical when that happens with a track you think you know so well. I hope people will listen to this mix with that kind of repetition because there are some quite detailed moments.

Such as the way he mixes in No Agenda, another of four Photek exclusives, including the aforementioned Azymuth and Fountainhead, plus Levitation. But, in fact, he doesnt ever quite mix it in. You never get to hear the full track, just snippets dusted around. Indeed, it would be easy to miss it entirely. I dont like to make things too obvious, says Parkes. There are clean powerful moments and murky moments that you have to hear a few times to know whats going on. The way I mix in No Agenda is very deliberate. You look at the track listing and theres a track called No Agenda, but its hard to work out what it is, unless you go to the individual tracks and then work out which bits have been used in the mix. You dont get to hear the song in its entirety. Its little bits sprinkled here and there, as though I start to mix it in then change my mind.

The DJ-Kicks mix marks a new era for Parkes, who seemed to withdraw from the music scene in 2007. He had long been disillusioned with the constraints of the drum n bass scene he helped pioneer. When I played in clubs, there was never any music I liked either side of my set. I wondered why I was part of this niche when it seemed I was a square peg in a round hole. When he started releasing music again last year with the Avalanche EP it had more in common with post dubstep than anything else, bass heavy music thats hard to categorize, but really it wasnt like anything else at all. If dubstep has taught us one thing its to let it all go, says Parkes. Just let stuff happen and sort it out later.

The track listing for the vinyl release of Photek's DJ Kicks compilation will feature four exclusive Photek tracks plus others from the mix.

    DJ Kicks: The Exclusives

One of the most enjoyable parts of the DJ-Kicks series is being able to hear the exclusive new track (or tracks, as the case my be) from the compiling artist. Each new volume contains at least one piece of music not available anywhere else, from the elite list of artists who have contributed to the series.

Six years ago, !K7 collected DJ-Kicks tracks from artists including Kruder & Dorfmeister, Carl Craig, Thievery Corporation and others on the first collection of DJ-Kicks Exclusives. For this 2012 release, they collected exclusive tracks from the most recent mixes, spanning the last five years.

The new volume of DJ-Kicks The Exclusives features music only available on DJ-Kicks mixes from the likes of Gold Panda, Juan MacLean, Four Tet, Hot Chip, and more. Despite the eclectic list of contributing artists, the standard of quality for the music they have made for their mixes speaks for itself, and the tracks complement each other for a cohesive listen in their full un-mixed format.

Gold Panda is an artist at ease traversing genre boundaries in search of new auditory frontiers, whether mixing dissected hip-hop beats or the pulsating flourishes of minimal techno. Breach DJ-Kicks

Its been a big year for Breach, a.k.a. Ben Westbeech. His track Jack hasnt just blown up on dancefloors across the globe: its laid waste to them. In the process, Jack got to Number 9 in the UK charts. Not bad considering Westbeech has always seen Breach as an underground thing. "Its been wonderful having a record that's commercially successful," he says. "The thing is not to lose sight of why you started making music in the first place. I wasnt trying to get in the Top Ten. I just care about making deep records that I get off on."

Take Breachs DJ Kicks mix, for example. If all you know about Breach is Jack, you're in for a surprise. Likewise, if youre familiar with Westbeech as a vocalist you might have to have a bit of a reappraisal. "This is the music that I love, the kind of thing that I play when I DJ," explains Westbeech. "I made !Jack and I play it, but theres a lot more to the music I love than that."

    Brandt Brauer Frick: DJ-Kicks

There's a common thread that runs through all of Brandt Brauer Frick's music. It is this: interesting things happen at the interface of machine and hand-made music. The Berlin trio's 2010 album, 'You Make Me Real', fused techno and classical. The 2011 follow-up, 'Mr Machine', saw them go the whole classical-meets-club hog with a ten-piece ensemble playing dance music live. Then, earlier this year, came 'Miami', a darker, more song-based collection exploring the same man-machine ideas. The Berlin trio's installment of the DJ-Kicks series does the same thing with a mix. Not for them the algorithmic rigidity of cutting and pasting tracks together on Ableton. They recorded the mix in one day, out of hours at Berlin's legendary Watergate club, using only vinyl and dub plates. "We didn't want to record it in our studio or at home, mainly because we preferred an intense session with limited time," explains Paul Frick. "That feels more like a unique situation and it enforces the tension and the necessity to do it right. Because we mixed it live there are mistakes and flaws, some rougher transitions in there. We are not super technical DJs. We like it when you hear those imprecisions because it's human. It feels like someone is behind the mix, rather than a computer." After all the conceptualizing, perhaps most importantly of all, the end result is that rare thing: a dancefloor mix full of emotion. Interesting things happen when humans and machines meet.
