    Divide

One of the most anticipated global releases of 2017, ÷ sees the 25-year-old in his finest form yet. Drawing inspiration from a wide array of experiences and subjects, Sheeran takes you through a hugely personal journey; be that reflecting on past relationships, family memories, his musical career or his time off traveling the world in 2016. Musically, ÷ is a varied collection of beautifully orchestrated and emotive ballads, impassioned raps laid over hip hop beats, timeless acoustic guitar masterpieces, and innovative, idiosyncratic pop music. Constantly on the move, the album was recorded between LA, London, Suffolk and while crossing the Atlantic aboard the RMS Queen Mary 2. Executive produced by multi-GRAMMY winner Benny Blanco and Sheeran himself with additional production coming from frequent collaborator Johnny McDaid, GRAMMY winner Mike Elizondo, and BRIT-award winner Steve Mac. Sheeran also created the album artwork concept for ÷ , even painting the cover himself.

    Light Divide

Jon Porras creates drone music with a refined sense of atmosphere and remarkable forward motion. Regardless of the tools he uses, be it guitars and stacks of amplifiers or modular synthesizers, Porras creates cavernous sound-worlds that are as inviting as they are alien. Light Divide, his second solo release for Thrill Jockey, shows Porras shifting his focus entirely to electronic synthesis, using a wide array of analog and digital systems to exponentially expand his sonic palate. The resulting sounds are silhouettes of distant rhythms, abstracted traces of techno wastelands that come in and out of focus like an urban, post-industrial sprawl being overtaken by fog. Porras constructed and arranged the tracks on Light Divide as an architect would design a building, thinking of the sub-bass as a foundation, percussion as walls and support beams, and white noise and oblique melodies as the light filling the open spaces. Rather than writing passages or song structures, he focused on designing sounds from the ground up, building gestural movements with these sculpted slabs. Through this technique, patterns and musical phrases emerge in subtle and surprising ways. This theme of architecture and design is reflected in the album cover, which was taken at Maison La Roche, a villa designed and built by Le Corbusier. Light Divide reveals Porras as a restless explorer, constantly finding new means by which to create expansive, impressionistic music. It demands close listening, and stands apart in Porras' solo and Barn Owl discography for its intense attention to detail.

    The Evil Divide (Awaiting Repress)

Three decades into their celebrated career, Death Angel remain as hungry as ever.

As a result, uncompromising urgency and unpredictability define the Bay Area thrash quintet's eighth full-length album, The Evil Divide [Nuclear Blast]. The group-Mark Osegueda [vocals], Rob Cavestany [lead guitar], Ted Aguilar [guitar], Will Carroll [drums], and Damien Sisson [bass]-satiate the appetite for buzzsaw speed riffs, double bass mayhem, and scorching vocals over the course of ten new anthems.

"I want every record of ours to always sound fucking hungry and desperate," declares Mark. "An injured animal is a dangerous fucking animal. We feel that. We're always striving for more and put everything into it until our bodies give out."

"We know who we are," adds Rob. "We're dedicated to this sound for both the fans and ourselves."

In order to siphon that energy, the group re-teamed with producer Jason Suecof [Trivium, Deicide] for the third album in a row. They traded Northern California for Suecof's Florida stronghold, Audio Hammer Studios, during two months in the fall of 2015. Following three consecutive records together, this lineup gelled more than ever while recording.

"You could feel it," continues Rob. "Everything was so much smoother in all regards. We progressed as a unit, and we all got on the same page pretty quickly. It makes recording and playing even more fun."

"We're collectively focused," says Mark. "Rob and I have grown a lot as songwriters, and the entire band is tighter than ever. We knew what to expect sonically with Jason, but we wanted to push things in a different direction. The production and drum, bass, and guitar tones are more organic. He's got such a great ear and nailed it. It's like we confidently hit our stride."

The first single "Lost" intersects a hypnotically haunting refrain with a chugging percussive groove, dropping the melody like a guillotine between fret-burning leads.

"Everybody feels lost at some point in their lives," explains Mark. "It's that sense of self-awareness or lack thereof that comes through in the lyrics. No one's immune to it. That time can be a fleeting week or a matter of years where you don't know what's going on. Music is a way to get it out and a vessel to vent. It's a universal thing." Opener "The Moth" whips from a galloping guitar death march into a battle-cry. Boasting a lyrical contribution from Rob, it name checks the album title in the chorus.

"Mark really breathes life into what I wrote," says Rob. "We have a great time collaborating and bouncing ideas off each other."

"The world is in such an odd state," sighs Mark. "There's always division, but these days it's wild. People are attacking each other for no reason. That's why I love metal. It's an amazing community, and people get into it for no other reason but the passion for music. It's the one thing we can retreat to."

"Cause for Alarm" volleys between a crossfire of six-string prowess, while "Father of Lies" closes on a haunting acoustic outro, illuminating the music's expanse and declaring another creative victory for the group.

The Evil Divide stands out as the culmination of thirty-plus years of music for Death Angel. It kicked off with legendary debut, The Ultra-Violence, in 1987. The classic Frolic Through The Park began to cement their legacy and even earned the distinction of landing on Loudwire's list of the "Top Ten Thrash Albums NOT Released by The Big 4." The group broke up following 1990's Act III only to reunite in 2004 on Art of Dying for the next generation. A powerful trifecta followed. In 2010, Relentless Retribution boasted a cameo from virtuosos Rodrigo y Gabriela, while 2013's The Dream Calls For Blood bowed at #72 on the Billboard Top 200, selling 5,400 copies first-week and earning the group's first-ever entry onto that respective chart. Beyond continued public praise from the likes of James Hetfield of Metallica and Robb Flynn of Machine Head, the band's music has popped up everywhere from Carl's Jr. commercials to Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III. Their fire burns brighter than ever in 2016.

"If you're a casual fan, I hope you really get it on this album," Mark leaves off. "If you've been with us since the beginning, I want you to see we aren't messing around. We're still Death Angel."

    Sings Lullabys For Lovers

The torchy, smoky sound of vocalist Chris Connor widened the range for jazz singers and in doing so epitomized cool Jazz singing in the 1950s. Her taste, style and intelligent analysis of a lyric divides "Lullaby For Lovers" into two moods-love found and love lost, giving this album a unique, breathy and intimate experience for listeners.

    Chance of Rain

In a few short years Laurel Halo has demonstrated an unnerving ability to question established idioms in electronic music. Throughout her body of work the Michigan-born producer has expressed musical representations of merged dualities; spirituality in the inorganic, space in the claustrophobic, hope in dread. As a result there's something uncanny about Laurel Halo's sound - the sonic templates may change, but the challenging of divides remains.

Two Conversations divided many listeners and critics upon its release. While some saw the album's more conventional song structures, less diverse sonic palette and relationship-driven lyrics as a blatant artistic retreat after the intense, experimental Low Level Owl project, others praised it as an assured combination of the driving emo-rock of their earlier work subtly embellished with elements of the Low Level Owl sound.

John Denver's music always had a warm, home-spun quality to it, so it isn't surprising that his 1975 holiday effort, Rocky Mountain Christmas, is a wonderfully low-key and friendly Christmas album. 1971's Lovejoy was Albert King's most fully realized attempt to bridge the divide between blues and rock. One Jug Of Wine, Two Vessels

The collaboration One Jug of Wine, Two Vessels is the fruit of a long-time musical appreciation between Bright Eyes and Neva Dinova. Featuring four new songs in addition to six from the original 2004 Crank! Records release, One Jug of Wine, Two Vessels is less of a split and more of a bonafide collaboration. Dividing the songwriting duties, the original tracks were recorded by Conor Oberst and Jake Bellows in basements of houses on quiet, leafy streets in Omaha in the fall of 2003. Those tracks were mixed and tweaked by famed producer-in-residence Mike Mogis at his Presto! Studios in Lincoln, Nebraska. The groups reconvened in the fall of 2009 to write and record four new tracks at Mogis's renowned ARC Studios in Omaha for the reissue.

    Speakerboxx/The Love Below

In the beginning there was Outkast, the prolific Hip Hop duo hailing from Atlanta, who made music sound like Soul Food; fatty, funky, fresh. Then, in 2003, Big Boi and AndrÉ 3000 released solo-albums under their shared moniker and named it Speakerboxxx / The Love Below, and saw that it was good.

    And so did we.

Both albums display the playful experimentation of their two very distinct styles and yet it is still undoubtedly an Outkast album. Big Boi takes us into a darker, 808-fueled world of true Hip Hop on Speakerboxxx, while Andre 3000's eccentricity is given free rein on The Love Below, with pit stops at crooner-Jazz, Soul and Funk.

Together we stand, divided we fall, but Outkast's Speakerboxxx / The Love Below proves that sometimes, one plus one can make a gazillion.

    Tennessee And Other Stories

Three Lobed Recordings and Divide By Zero Records are extremely excited to be involved with the release of Tennessee & Other Stories, Hans Chew's debut solo album. While Chew is best known as the honky-tonk pianist and auxiliary vocalist behind Brooklyn's psychedelic Americana outfit D. Charles Speer & the Helix, his skill as a piano player has also previously been on prominent display in support to both Jack Rose (appearing on both The Black Dirt Sessions and Luck In The Valley) and Oakley Hall. Chew's playing and skill have thrived during his time living in New York City, but prior to his move he spent several years of musical gestation honing his skills as a piano player in residence at Atlanta's infamous Clermont Hotel. Tennessee & Other Stories was born out of that residency where many of these songs were written there in the middle of the night in a dingy third-floor hotel room.

Mindelds is the 10th studio record by Toto, as originally released in 1999. The album saw the return of original Toto singer Bobby Kimball, who had left the band once their breakthrough album Toto IV was released back in 1982. Kimball and axe slinger Steve Lukather share lead vocals, dividing these duties approx 60/40.

As always with Toto, the playing is tight. What else would one expect from these veteran musicians? Apart from Lukather and Kimball, Toto in '99 consisted of David Paich (keyboards), Mike Porcaro (bass) and Simon Phillips (drums, who replaced original drummer Jeff Porcaro after his fatal heart attack in 1992). The record was nominated for a Grammy in the category Best Engineered Album, Non Classical.

Some collaborations between jazz giants seem to have been disappointing for whatever reason. John Scofield and Pat Metheny have such distinct approaches to jazz guitar, who could have foreseen what such a project would end up like?

It's no surprise that their collaboration sounds so relaxed, fluid, and musically serene, writes AllMusic.com Listeners shouldn't necessarily expect a series of slashing duels, but it's certainly not vapid new age or retrograde fusion. Scofield and Metheny divide compositional duties and play masterful, expressive solos. Guitar fans will be especially impressed with the mastering, which makes Scofield and Metheny's guitars sound right in the room. Even those who don't like sessions without horns, brass, or keyboards shouldn't spurn this one; it still has plenty of muscle.

    Into The Sun

Limited Edition Red And White Colored Vinyl

Going scattershot pays dividends on Into the Sun, the very varied 2015 album from Bassnectar and one of most satisfying releases from the heavy electro producer to date. It's especially satisfying when wearing headphones, as interludes and slowly developing tracks dot the album with moments that aren't so dancefloory, although aggressive and bass-heavy highlights like The Mystery Spot and the ridiculously fun Blow (it sounds like Cookie Monster singing a trap song) could certainly rip the speakers at high volume. Like previous releases, the album is divided between Bassnectar productions and remix work for other artists, but what's new this time out are the 2015 Remixes, with old Bassnectar cuts like Breathing getting interesting updates. Try one of his tight and lean EPs for a taster, then come back for a full-length EDM ride worth taking.

Sigur Ros' celebrated third album, and for many people - especially in US where it remains their biggest selling work - the most quintessentially Sigur Ros record of their career to date. It is the only album where Jonsi sings entirely in the wordless lyrics of Hopelandic. This desire to elide meaning and allow the listener to bring their own interpretation to the music extends to the eight songs, all of which are nameless. The music is broadly split into two halves, divided by a critical 36 seconds of silence. The first half of the album is lighter and more optimistic, the second bleaker and more melancholic, culminating in the thundering climax of Untitled #8, the closing song of every Sigur Ros show since the song was written in 2000.

    Belafonte At Carnegie Hall

Harry Belafonte has always been a musical
chameleon. Using a thick base of folk music, he
added blues, soul, jazz, pop and a plethora of
various Caribbean styles to create albums that
were unique, socially relevant and just plain
entertaining. This live recording was produced
by Bob Bollard at New York's famed Carnegie
Hall features material culled from two identical
performances on April 19 and April 20, 1959.

"Belafonte At Carnegie Hall" was documented
at the height of the singer's success when it
wasn't fashionable to record outside of the studio
environment. The revered 19-track affair is divided
into the three acts Moods of the American Negro,
In the Caribbean, and Round the World, and
finds Belafonte's world class voice wonderfully
supported by a small combo of two guitars, bass,
and percussion, and a perfectly timed 47-piece
    orchestra conducted by Robert Corman.

    Songs From The Wood

Jethro Tull's tenth album was inspired by Ian Anderson's departure to a more rural environment in a transition which bore clear influence on the writing and recording process, with the band notably doffing a cap to British folklore and countryside.

Songs From The Wood is often referred to as one of the most commercially appealing Jethro Tull albums, containing elements of rock, prog and folk-rock. Although media reaction at the time divided opinion, the album has certainly developed a nostalgic rapport with fans through the years and it is perceived today as one of the band's most popular albums. Drummer Barrie Barlow comments that it sounds Fresh, unique, great textures, interesting and dynamic!, while guitarist Martin Barre remembers that It was a very tight band, one of the strongest line-ups Tull ever had I think that Songs From The Wood and Heavy Horses [the follow up album] as a pair of albums are near the top of the tree.

    Death Certificate

If Ice Cube's debut was a shocking attack that proved the N.W.A legacy would be stronger divided, his sophomore effort was a new kind of superstar pulling off the miraculous, a follow-up that equals its classic predecessor and tops it in some people's books. With a million copies of Death Certificate preordered, Cube was no longer the rock critics' darling. A million people listening was dangerous, especially since he was now slithering his influence into the suburbs. If the black rage didn't get you, the misogyny of I'm gonna do my thing, with your daughter probably would. Here, one of rap's greatest storytellers is able to draw hatred in under a minute with the short and direct Black Korea, an angry protest song concerning Korean grocers that got him dubbed racist and Ice KKKube by some. The track is an extreme representation of how a much sharper and cutting this album is when compared with his debut, and even though the intro announces the full-length is divided into a Death Side and Life Side, both are equally bleak. With the CD format, the two sides are indistinguishable and run over the listener with fast tales of drug dealing, drive-by shootings, and women who go from Ms. Thing to Ms. Gonorrhea. This would be numbing if it weren't for the rapper's amazing lyrics, ground-shaking delivery, and insight like when A Bird in the Hand deals with the irony of selling crap to buy diapers (Gotta serve you food that might give you cancer/Cuz my son doesn't take no for answer). A bit of sweet relief comes with the brightness of the great single Steady Mobbin' and with the nostalgia and slow tempo of Doing Dumb Shit. True to the Game (Ain't that a bitch/They hate to see a young nigga rich) is arguably the quintessential Cube track and if all this weren't enough already, the N.W.A diss No Vaseline hangs off the album like a crowd-pleasing, Brick-sampling encore. Although next year's Predator would be a bigger hit, Death Certificate brings to a close the man's trilogy of perfect albums that began with N.W.A's Compton and explodes into a supernova right here.
