    Asylum

Disturbed began building Asylum as soon as they got off the road in the summer of 2009. Officially entering Groovemaster Studios in February of 2010, the band set about self-producing the album, as they did with Indestructible.

Draiman declares, This record shows a certain degree of maturation and enhanced complexity. Asylum is still identifiably Disturbed, but the evolution is clear. It preserves the elements of what we do but at a more advanced level.

    Believe

After the double-platinum, Top 30 success of Y2K's The Sickness, the Chicago metal quartet Disturbed is back with a much-anticipated sophomore album. Believe is more of everything that made the band's debut album such a phenomenon - more melodic, more intense, more metal, even more powerful. Says the band: In an age of nothing, at a time when we stand at the brink of our own destruction - strengthen your belief, in yourself, in the future of humanity, in the things of this world which cannot easily be perceived...When it seems that all you have left are the dead remnants of the fabric of your life - Believe.

    Immortalized

After a four year hiatus, Grammy Award-nominated, multiplatinum hard rock titans Disturbed have announced their return with their sixth studio album, entitled Immortalized, to be released August 21 through Reprise Records and is available for pre-order everywhere. Lead single The Vengeful One is out now, along with the accompanying animated video from award-winning filmmaker Phil Mucci. The upcoming release follows 2010's gold-certified Asylum, Disturbed's fourth consecutive #1 on the Billboard Top 200, and the group's subsequent four-year hiatus, which gave members David Draiman [vocals], Dan Donegan [guitar], Mike Wengren [drums], and John Moyer [bass] the necessary reprieve to make this imminent and deliberate return.

After a triple-platinum debut and platinum follow-up, Disturbed fuses the brutality and darkness of 2000's The Sickness with the added melodic nature and complexity of 2002's Believe for album number three. The Sickness

A Chicago metal quartet, Disturbed has been driving fans in the Midwest wild with their frenetic,
theatrical live show. On their debut album, The Sickness, the band combines an over-the-top metal groove appealing to the underground with radio-friendly melodic hooks that grab hold of mainstream rock fans. Disturbed is that rare hard group with street credibility and musical chops. Now that is truly disturbing.

... demagnetizing an LP definitively removed a high-frequency glaze or glare and seemed to enrich the midband... Demagnetizing LPs works. And do not try one of these devices unless you're prepared to buy it.

LP Record, DISC and Cable Demagnetizer 110VAC

The Furutech DeMag completely demagnetizes LPs and optical disc media such as CD, CD-R, DVD, MD, Game CD, Photo CD, SACD, and DVD Audio. Plus it's an indispensable accessory for keeping interconnect cables, connectors and power cords demagnetized to prevent magnetic signal distortion. Demagnetization isn't Just For Optical Media Anymore! One year factory Warranty. The deMag works for disc media as well as cables, connectors, and power cords! No part of the playback chain should be disturbed by resolution-sapping magnetic interference. Demagnetizing LPs How can an LP be magnetized? It's plastic! The fact is that pigment added to the plastic during the manufacturing process is the culprit. The minute amount of ferrous material in the pigment causes LPs to become magnetized. Testing at the Tokyo Nanotechnology center with a IHI Gauss meter showed that after an LP was treated with the deMag the magnetic field of the LP was lowered from 620~630 nT to 572~582 nT (nanotesla: a unit of magnetic field strength,1 Tesla = 10,000 gauss) Demagnetizing Cables Electric current generates a magnetic field as it flows through a power cord or conductor. However, magnetic impurities within the materials themselves become magnetized and introduce further magnetic distortion. Just loop your cables and power cords with their connectors on the deMag and begin treatment. No matter how valuable or expensive your system is, the only way to achieve top performance is by demagnetizing your problems away! There are no other demagnetizers on the market that can be used in such a versatile and effective way. The deMag Demagnetizer can even be used on metal-based accessories like CD stabilizers or speaker terminals.

    Disturbing Wildlife

Invisible Familiars has announced their debut album, Disturbing Wildlife, will be released on Other Music Recording Co. In conjunction with today's LP reveal, the band premiered album track "Heavenly All" - featuring Nels Cline on guitar - via Bullet. Invisible Familiars signed to Other Music this spring, releasing the 7" single "Clever Devil" b/w "Digger's Invitation" in June. Stereogum called it, "T. Rex in a funhouse of horrors," advising, "Let it cast a spell on you." Invisible Familiars is led by Jared Samuel, a New York City-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who has long made his living playing music and supporting a variety of NYC artists - from Sharon Jones to Martha Wainwright, and most recently, Cibo Matto and the Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger.

Samuel retreated to the seclusion of a houseboat docked in Jamaica Bay to write the music and words that would become Disturbing Wildlife. It was the first time I'd ever spent more than one day completely by myself, said Samuel, wondering just exactly what is real and then, ultimately, feeling fine. New single Heavenly All is a lyrical treasure map to the transformative and often playful experience of solitude: talking to myself again, cravin heavy metal. Back on land, Samuel enlisted good friend Michael Leonhart (Steely Dan/Yoko Ono) to co-produce the record and gathered a striking group of musicians to help perform it, including Robbie Mangano, Tim Kuhl, Jolie Holland, Yuka Honda & Miho Hatori (Cibo Matto), Nels Cline, Ryan Sawyer, Stuart Bogie (Antibalas), and many more.

Disturbing Wildlife is a record that slinks and slithers through time, defying the notion of genre and embracing the risk of feeling. It never lets the listener pin it down and, instead, returns the favor, holding you still between the sometimes-dream of existence and the exquisite power of Samuel's compositions.

    Shore Obsessed

Soft Circle started as the solo project of Hisham Akira Bharoocha after he left the experimental band Black Dice in 2004. Bharoocha started out making tribal/electronic/ambient soundscapes that forged paths between the spirit world and the human clans of the past and present using looping equipment, electronics, drums, and voice. His recent music is still based on this fascination with repetition, cyclical rhythms, and trance-inducing tones, but has gone further in the direction of heavy beats and more solidified song structures, with Bharoocha now using lyrics as a means to communicate.

Soft Circles new album, Shore Obsessed (Post Present Medium), is its first to feature collaborations from new member and multi-instrumentalist Benjamin Vida (Town and Country, Bird Show, Singer), and includes additional vocals by singer/songwriter Matteah Baim. The album serves as a comment on the current state of our disturbed planet. Deeply frightened by the way the governments of all nations and the wealthy use their power to drain the planet of its resources without taking into account the destruction of the environment or the toll on the global economy, Bharoocha sings about the bottomless pit of greed and the lack of humanitarianism that we as a people must get back in touch with. Shore Obsessed uses more traditional song structures than on past releases, as well as dance-music beats, to entice the audience to move, a positive act, and to think progressively when listening to the lyrics.

Stereophile's Recording of the Month For February 1984

Imagine, if you can, a private recital in your own home by two consummate artists who play these works for their own delight as much as for yours. Imagine sound so completely and disarmingly natural that after 30 seconds you're unaware it's reproduced. That's what this record is all about. - Stereophile, February 1984

David Abel, violin, Julie Steinberg, piano. This composition occupies a special place among Beethoven's creations because it shows a unique quality: there is an Olympian elegance, a profound gentleness that pervades the entire work. Nowhere does Beethoven the earth shaker appear. Even the scherzo movement does not disturb this sustained thoughtfulness.

Violin and piano begin trading short thematic statements in quick exchange from the first notes of the first movement. Parallel arpeggios create a growing intensity. The middle section of the movement is characterized by abrupt modulations and an increased pace of exchanges. A striking procedure is the use of a seemingly interminable trill, nearly heartstopping in its intensity.

The second movement, Adagio expressivo, one of Beethoven's floating Adagios, is based on the compulsion of a slow intense bass movement. The serenity of this movement is not disturbed by elaborate decoration from both instruments. And this stillness is further emphasized by a fourteen measure repeating pedal point (nearly one fifth of the movement) which closes it. The Scherzo sustains the serious character of the entire work. The last movement begins not only with a quick alternation of themes between the violin and piano, but a soft and loud alternation, as well, which adds to the feeling of growing intensity. An interrupted rondo is the plan, but the interruptions are of a major kind: another sensuous adagio and a daring fugato lead to a presto outburst concluding the movement.

David Wilson had already recorded piano by the time he began working with world-class musicians Steinberg and Abel in the Mills College Concert Hall in Oakland, California, though it was the first time he recorded a violin. Experimenting with different microphone positions in an attempt to capture what he calls the delicious geometry of sound emanating from Abel's Guarneri and Steinberg's Hamburg Steinway D, he ended up hanging his Schoeps CMC-36 microphones from a ladder high above the instruments. Of the results, he says, I'd put the recording up against any chamber music recording. It has to be my favorite.

Reached at their home in Oakland, Steinberg and Abel, whose trio with percussionist William Winant has commissioned music from the likes of John Harbison, Lou Harrison, Paul Dresher, Somei Satoh, and Gordon Mumma (for starters), reminisced about their time with Wilson.

The session was free of the time pressure and tension that can really get in the way of the final outcome, says Abel. If we wanted to stop for a bite, or go outside to rest for a while, that was not a problem... Dave kept open to what was happening in the moment, as in a concert. He understood about not making a 'perfect' recording, and instead left the small imperfections... that make the final result sound human and real. One could not ask for better.

    Drugs 'N Hymns (On Sale)

Drugs 'n Hymns is the newest release from LA-based artist Rocco Deluca. The album finds the blues-steeped musician forging a solo path armed with his National guitar, distinctively emotive voice and 10 reflective, vivid song-stories. The hypnotically spare compositions conjure a world of characters seeking a certain solace and salvation while continually mired in the disturbed darkness. The album was anti-produced by Rocco DeLuca and features guests such as the Echo Park Jubilee Tambo Flower Unsung Heroes Choir. Drugs 'N Hymns is a fascinating recording in its quiet intensity, conveying a wide swathe of emotions from quietude mixed with underlying dread to hopeful exhilaration.

Rocco DeLuca was born in Southern California surrounded by a vibrant arts community that inspired him to follow his muses at an early age. By seven he was learning to play listening to Billy Holiday, Nina Simone and the Delta Blues heroes of the 1920s. He soon crossed paths and performed with the likes of John Lee Hooker, Johnny Cash and June Carter and Daniel Lanois, an amazing musical association key in the evolution of DeLucas unique sound whether fronting a band or playing solo.

Says Daniel Lanois: I fully believe in DeLuca. I think that hes got the power to be a contemporary troubadour, as I see it, and I hope I can be his friend for a long time, whether I am operating in the same limelight, ahead of him, behind him, in his shadow, whatever it takes, Ill be there. The one thing that I love about Rocco DeLuca is he is driven by his own heart.

    It

Almost a decade before their status as press darlings and eccentric purveyors of weird and wonderful pop music, a deeply disturbed Sheffield pop group crafted a brace of loveably awkward pop classics, most notably the controversial Little Girl (With Blue Eyes). Pulp were simply awesome and undeniably strange, ranging from Scott Walker balladeering to post-punk, avant-garde aggressiveness.

Fire Records will be reissuing the first three Pulp albums as part of their Embers series. Constituting three very different stages in the development of the band, the albums cover a staggering sonic range from the pastoral, acoustic sounds of It (1983), to the darkly romantic Freaks (1987) and the disco-tinged Separations (1992). They point to Jarvis Cocker's varied sources of musical inspiration and show a band in the process of finding their own unique voice, whilst hinting at the greatness that would follow. All three come newly re-mastered and beautifully repackaged, complete with additional bonus material and brand new liner-notes by Everett True.

As one of their most honest recordings, It captures a band at the very beginning of their startling career. It is a gentle, mainly acoustic album, hinting at the musical directions Pulp would later pursue. The record touches on the majestic, theatrical ballads of Scott Walker as well as the stark, folky song-poems of Leonard Cohen. Produced by a young band in the process of pinpointing their direction, the album has aged beautifully into a charming collection.

The reissue features 4 bonus tracks including single version of My Lighthouse, an alternative mix of Blue Girls, as well as the previously unreleased Sink Or Swim and Please Don't Worry from Pulp's John Peel session in 1981.

By 1992 Pulp had already transformed from their debut It through the dark electronic phase of Freaks and were garnering significant momentum. Now critically acclaimed and with a live reputation matched by only a few, most of the songs on their third and final album Separations, sound fully-realized in that undeniably Pulp manner that was soon to be experienced everywhere. And, for the first time, there was an inescapable disco pulse. This is the transition album where Pulp, caught between a doomed romantic outsider past and an acid-bright future, made an album that brilliantly reflects both.

Separations spawned two of Pulp's most successful singles to date in Countdown and My Legendary Girlfriend, with the latter topping the singles of 1991 lists by major music publications. This definiitve reissue features four bonus tracks, including Death Goes To The Disco, Is This House as well as an extended version of the single Countdown and the previously unreleased Death Comes To Town.

Pulp had changed significantly since their debut It. By this time every member bar Jarvis Cocker had moved on but the addition of Russell Senior proved to be a pivotal turning point for the band. No longer did Pulp sound pastoral, easy-natured; now they were darkly romantic, brooding, noisy and a little bit Gothic, in the way young folk who brush their hair a certain way are always a little bit Gothic. Pulp were out-of-tune with the times: but the times didn't satisfy Pulp.

Freaks is quite marvellous. Most of these songs stand the distance of time: it was here, possibly even more than 1992's Separations, that Pulp started coming into their own as a band with a fully-realized aesthetic.

The first LP is the original album, unaltered and in its entirety. The second is a bonus LP comprised of tracks from the two big non-album singles from the same era, Little Girl (With Blue Eyes) and Dogs are Everywhere. Re-Mastered From The Original Tapes And Overseen By John Cale

Over 50 years in the arena of Contemporary Music and John Cale remains as active and unpredictable as
ever; is there a more restless and ruminating spark of an artist, who, at the age of 73, admits he still goes
to the studio every day and writes? From classical roots as a precociously gifted Welsh boy to modernclassical
experiments in New York, that lead to co-founding The Velvet Underground, Cale has filtered
that mindset through singer-songwriter, proto-punk and post-punk prisms. His endless fascination has
kept us endlessly fascinated, as Cale has consistently created new fissions, including the digital advances
of the day, absorbed by hip hop as much as conventional songwriting.

Which is where we find Cale at this precise moment, with not just the re-mastered version of one of his
most unique and lauded solo records, the 1982 masterpiece Music For A New Society, but a complete
new reworking of the album under the title M:FANS, a record that explores the relationship between
old and new, in terms of the sound and vision, and Cale's memories of the experience, in terms of his
life, and the recording. M: FANS ends with "Back To The End", a previously unfinished outtake that Cale
rediscovered among the original tapes, whose haunting spectral mood matches anything on the 1982
record. (This version retains Cale's original vocal and piano while adding viola). Back and forth M:FANS
goes, sampling the original, while creating brand new soundscapes, giving Cale the opportunity for
closure on one of the most testing eras of his life, and a way to keep moving forward.

Music For A New Society had a fraught birth, to say the least. With Cale having folded his Spy label
imprint into Michael Zilkha's Ze Records, and retired his band for a run of solo concerts, Zilkha proposed
an album to capture this new phase. Rising to the challenge - "a very good one" - Cale created a brief
for the exercise; to only allow himself the ten days booked in the studio to complete the record, and to
only set the tape rolling when he was ready to improvise. Cale once recalled the recording process as,
"like method acting. Madness. Excruciating. I just let myself go. It became a kind of therapy, a personal
exorcism." But that fed into the album's extreme qualities; its nerve-shredding raw intimacy, its fractured,
    anguished beauty.

In 1982, Music For A New Society sounded exactly like its title: something futuristic, a new kind of
songwriting exercise. In 2015, M:FANS is exactly that too, full of electrical crackle and disturbed
frequencies, a different kind of dystopian future awaits. John Cale forages on; it's the only way he knows
    how.

    Roxy Music

Simultaneously embracing kitschy glamour and avant-pop, Roxy Music's self-titled debut shimmers with seductive style and pulsates with disturbing synthetic textures. Bryan Ferry tracks out his nightclub glamour-boy persona here and his wandering vibratos sail over Brian Eno's atonal flourishes, but what really makes Roxy Music such a confident, astonishing debut is how these primitive avant-garde tendencies are married to full-fledged songs, whether it's the free-form, structure-bending Remake/Remodel or the sleek glam of Virginia Plain.

    Write About Love

Back after a 5-year hiatus doing solo projects, soundtracks and more, Glasgow's beloved BELLEANDSEBASTIAN have returned with one of their finest albums. Marrying the intimacy of early works like Sinister and Tigermilk with the production values of their more recent work, Write About Love is a varied, captivating and occasionally disturbing trawl through the mind of Stuart Murdoch and his colleagues. The album features duets with Norah Jones and actress Carey Mulligan (An Education).

Blood Money uses the same template and players as Alice (released at the same time) and first saw life as an opera production by Robert Wilson. It's Waits's treatment of Georg Buchner's 1837 socio-political play, Woyzek which premiered in 2000 in Copenhagen. It's a dark morality play performed in a style where a barker from a medicine show is mysteriously transported to the Weimar Republic via Tin Pan Alley. Disturbing and delirious when it's not romantic and hilarious, the songs have a much more direct emotional appeal than the surrealistic Alice.

    The Takeoff (Discontinued) (On Sale)

The latest southern rap duo Playaz Circle made their debut in 2007 with Supply & Demand. Signed to the groundbreaking Disturbing tha Peace label, founded by multi-platinum and Grammy winning artist and actor Ludacris and Disturbing Tha Peace CEO Chaka Zulu, these Georgia boys continue to make noise with their current hit Stupid featuring OJ Da Juiceman from their sophomore album Flight 360: The Takeoff. We come from the era when hip-hop really had substance, Tity Boy says. We were students of artists like NWA, Too Short and Big Daddy Kane. We knew all of that music. Growing-up in the College Park section of Atlanta at a time when hometown groups like Goodie Mob and Outkast were pioneering a southern hip-hop sensibility, the Playaz Circle rap duo Tity Boy and Dolla were boyhood friends before either had ever busted a rhyme. Playaz Circle proves that there is little competition when it comes to being the hottest crew from the south. On our songs, we just strive to make timeless songs that make you feel good, says Tity Boy. There is no argument; Playaz Circle has achieved that goal.

Mahler - Symphony #1 (Speakers Corner)

"What kind of a world is this which produces such sounds and forms to portray itself?" said Mahler of his First Symphony and gave the world his answer in the music.

What at first sounds like "endless Spring" is transformed grotesquely to become an irreal collage. Just how deceptive is this idyllic landscape through which the wayfarer wanders? Distant fanfares, furtive melodies and strange cuckoo calls disturb the seemingly peaceful depiction of Nature before the cheerful theme melody pushes to the fore. But this peace is transient too. The wayfarer begins to increase his pace, he is not the hunter but the hunted in a hostile world. This symphony neither portrays nor describes - it presents the esthetic counterpart of reality.

In view of the recent revival of Mahler and the resultant new recordings of his works, this early DECCA recording cannot be too highly praised. The disc guarantees not only a masterly performance but sumptuous sound and transparency. The owner of this particular recording of the Titan Symphony certainly needs no other and has every right to ask, "What kind of a record is this which produces such sounds...?"

    Musicians:

    • London Symphony Orchestra

    • Sir Georg Solti (conductor)

Recording: January and February 1964 at Kingsway Hall, London by Gordon Parry / John Culshaw

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Mermaid EP

Mermaid is the darkest song you'll hear all year: a self-contained fable shot through with evocative and disturbing imagery but rising to a sweeping, romantic, oddly moving climax. This waltz-time ballad gestures towards the tattered folk of Okkervil River's beloved 2005 album Black Sheep Boy, but somehow unearths something much more mysterious and blurrily ambiguous.

With Walked Out On a Line we get a glimpse of what might further emerge. Choral and atmospheric and stripped of any of the acoustic textures that have defined much of the band's past work, Walked Out on a Line is a smooth-sailing symbolist fever-dream, fractured and impressionistic lyrics floating over a sea of sighing voices, glittering rhodes, and a gently driving beat. It's an ambitious statement about how much innovative fuel the band has to burn, an as fleeting a 5:20 song as you're likely to hear.
